Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among others things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

First up, apologies to everyone for the missing puzzle page last week. We had a few things pop up at the last minute which meant we had to bump them, but to make it up to you we have included two puzzle pages this week. From the amount of feedback we had regarding the missing puzzles, that should be welcome news for a great number of our readers!

It’s o cial. Mount Canobolas will now be also known by its traditional Wiradjuri name, Gaanha bula. As someone with a love for maps and the origins of place names, I think dual naming adds a greater richness to our understanding of the past and better acknowledges that the history of our country extends far beyond the arrival of Europeans a couple of centuries ago.

Congratulations to the Orange Lions Club members on the successful unearthing of their time capsule in Robertson Park last week. I know a lot of work went into the planning of it all, but everything went o without a hitch. It was great to experience the atmosphere at the helicopter hangar on Saturday as people opened their packages from the past. We’ve got more on that and plenty of photos inside.

Until next week!

Memories and messages from the past:

Orange Lions Club’s time capsule contents revealed

The old rescue helicopter hangar in Redman Place was abuzz on Saturday morning as messages and keepsakes interned in the Orange Lions Club’s time capsule saw the light of day for the first time in 50 years.

In 1973, the Lions fundraiser invited locals to send a message or items of interest into the future by purchasing an envelope to be sealed in the time capsule and only revealed on June 29, 2023.

The unearthing of the capsule last Thursday morning attracted a good-sized crowd to Robertson Park. There was a feeling of eager anticipation in the air as the backhoe went to work, the crowd keen to know whether the contents of the capsule had survived the five decades.

Watching on was former Orange Lions Club president Geo Newham, who’d personally buried the capsule on a cold wet morning 50 years ago to the day.

The backhoe made easy work removing the concrete slab poured over the site and bringing the concrete pipe housing the capsule to the surface. Breaking into the bricked-up concrete pipe took a little more e ort from the Orange City Council sta and Lions volunteers but the sealed copper capsule was eventually revealed intact.

“It was a bit of nostalgia you might say and a bit of apprehension as to how it’s going to come out!” Geo said, following the capsule’s unearthing.

When burying the capsule in June 1973, Geo said they had done what they could to ensure the contents would survive, but he was still relieved to see the capsule was still intact.

“My expectations were it could go either way! But there was no kind of moisture that came out of the container when it was being moved around and I thought, that’s a good sign!” Geo said, relieved.

“I was surprised at how solid the unit was. It

didn’t just fall to pieces, they had to work at it. We must have done a good job when we put it in the ground.”

The capsule (a copper-alloy tube from a water heater) was then taken to the hangar in Redman Place to acclimatise before it was cut open and more than 250 envelopes were then sorted and organised for collection on Saturday.

The majority of the envelopes were addressed to family members, while others to community groups such as the Orange and District Historical Society and one even to the current Mayor of Orange.

“We are thrilled, it couldn’t have gone better!” Current Orange Lions Club President, Debbie Butwell said from the hangar on Saturday morning.

“The contents of the capsule were perfect and the atmosphere today is delightful!”

Arriving soon after the advertised collection time of 10am, Orange City Life observed a steady stream of people coming and

going from the hangar. Some collected their envelopes and left carrying them unopened, while most pulled up a chair by the gas heaters and took their time reading letters from relatives and reliving old memories.

“There are just a lot of people sitting and sharing stories and it’s beautiful, it really is!” Debbie said.

Although for some, seeing letters written by loved ones now passed on was an emotional experience.

“We had one lady who was very emotional because her dad had written on the envelope and she was taking it to the cemetery to open it,” she said.

Orange Lions Club will now keep unclaimed envelopes for 60 days, Debbie said, after which time they will be passed to Orange City Library for digitisation and preservation.

If you think you are the rightful owner of one of the remaining letters from the time capsule you can email olc.timecapsule@gmail.com

Local author Drew Bale is about to launch his fourth novel!

Local author and primary school teacher Drew Bale is excited to announce the release of his fourth novel, The Bigger Man, which was released Saturday, July 1.

The Bigger Man is the sequel to Drew’s 2021 book The Wrangler, and the second in his young adult series, Warriors of Westopolis

Set in a fictionalised version of nearby Wellington, The Bigger Man follows the journey of the Jiemba, as he navigates his way around isolated and forgotten bushland. While he’s adjusting to his new surroundings he must also learn to use his newly acquired superhero strength.

“Think Marvel, but in the Central West!”

Drew said of the series.

Book one of the series focused on the city of Orange, and Drew has been working on ideas for stories set in other Central West towns.

“I’ve got a little map and the idea is to write a book for each of the places on there.”

For Drew his passion for writing extends back to his childhood.

“I’ve always been writing, ever since primary school, but I just found that I didn’t have time,” he said.

But while studying at university, Drew finally found a way to make his passion a priority.

“I’d do all the [course] work, have two or three months o , so I’d fill it with writing,”

Drew said.

It’s been a practice he has been able to continue even after entering his teaching career, but he’d love to make it more of a priority.

“To be able to sit back and write, that’s the dream,” Drew said.

The Bigger Man will be the fourth book

Drew’s published since his first book hit the shelves four years ago. But he reckons he’s written roughly a dozen novel manuscripts over the past decade, and Drew now intends to revisit some of these earlier stories and get them into shape for publication.

The Bigger Man will be available from Collins Booksellers, Orange and online retailers.

Dual names approved for Gaanha bula/Mount Canobolas

The majestic dormant volcano that dominates Orange’s southern horizon will now be known by two names: Gaanha bula and Mount Canobolas.

Gaanha bula, the traditional name for the mountain in the Wiradjuri language, was officially gazetted as a dual name for Mount Canobolas on Friday, June 30.

The dual naming comes as a result of an application made by local Wiradjuri elder Uncle Neil Ingram, with the support of the National Parks and Wildlife Service, to the Geographical Names Board last year.

“On behalf of the Gaanha Bula Action Group, we made an application and all the hard work paid off… now the traditional

Aboriginal name can now be recognised,” Uncle Neil told Orange City Life on Friday.

“I think this is great for our community,” he continued. “To recognise the original name before Europeans colonised our country. Now, this means the feature has two names: an Aboriginal name and a non-Aboriginal name each existing in their own right.

“That we can recognise the traditional name, the Aboriginal name, it makes me very proud and I’m just so happy.”

The NSW Government has supported a dual naming policy – returning traditional names given by Aboriginal people to geographical features and cultural sites – for more than 20 years.

RURAL HEALTH MATTERS

In 2015, Bathurst saw the traditional name for Mount Panorama, Wahluu, given official recognition.

And in 2021, the Macquarie River was also given back its traditional Wiradjuri name, Wambuul.

“Aboriginal place-naming is essential to language revitalisation,” Uncle Neil said. “It helps reawaken it, preserves and helps grow Aboriginal language, and strengthens Aboriginal connection with culture, identity and country.

“What it means is that this will allow the Aboriginal community and the wider community to share our stories and our culture — that’s what I believe will happen.

“It makes me very proud and I hope the rest of our community would take this onboard and respect it.”

Growing medical students on Wiradjuri country NAIDOC

Almost 1000 medical students have studied on Wiradjuri country at the School of Rural Health in Dubbo and Orange. During their time here, as well as learning about rural medicine and the benefits and challenges of rural healthcare, they are also introduced to the topic of Indigenous Health. This theme is continued throughout their studies and is complemented by being welcomed into our communities and immersed into our local region.

Each year, we are privileged to have local Aboriginal Elders and community members generously give their time to meet and get to know our students and share their knowledge and wisdom. For this we say thank you. From our annual Cultural Immersion Day and Day on Country in Dubbo, Indigenous Cultural Adventure in Orange, campfire yarn-ups and Elders morning tea, our students are given unique learning opportunities that can’t be found through textbooks. Engaging with community, sharing stories and hearing of

the experiences and health issues directly from Aboriginal people, is a special part of the growth and development of our training doctors. It’s also a vital aspect in them learning how to provide culturally appropriate care to patients they meet along the way. Being involved in these activities means the student doctors are not meeting Aboriginal people for the first time at the hospital, so it’s also a key part in building meaningful relationships with community.

Engaging with our Aboriginal Elders gives

students a much more well-rounded and enhanced cultural learning experience. Through meeting and yarning, they learn firsthand about Indigenous perspectives and the importance of recognising and understanding culture. In addition to this, Aboriginal history and the impacts of loss of culture and identity, and the importance of country are all topics shared with students. They learn about the stolen generations and intergenerational trauma and the ongoing effects of these, as well as learning about the significance of

spirituality, diversity among communities, and kinship structures, in particular the importance of family.

We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to connect with community, learn about our local Aboriginal culture and contribute to improved health outcomes. Thank you for your continued commitment to our students. For making them feel welcome and sharing your knowledge and wisdom to contribute to their medical education.

Orange Family History Group celebrates 40-year milestone

The Orange Family History Group is celebrating a little of their own history this month: 40 years since their founding by keen local genealogist, Bruce Walkden Thomas.

The origins of the group can be traced to a meeting of the Ladies’ Evening View Club on July 28, 1983, where the guest speaker was Nick Vine Hall, the director of the Society of Australian Genealogists.

“His talk was very well received,” recalled Mr Thomas in a 1988 Spring issue of the group’s newsletter, “and after the talk Nick and I were besieged by many interested ladies requesting further information on tracing family history.

“Later that night, as we sat drinking co ee before a blazing log fire, Nick asked me to found a Family History Group in Orange. This I did.”

Initially a private group of interested people, they soon found themselves overwhelmed with letters asking for

research assistance and advice. It wasn’t long before the group went public and today, as then, they continue to help people uncover their past.

“The family history group, one of their aims is to help people out, educate people on how to do their family history,” local studies librarian Julie Syke said.

Now partnered with Orange City Library, family history group volunteers can be found in the library’s local studies room every week, Julie said.

“They volunteer here, most Fridays, to help people, people who’ve hit brick walls or just need to know how to start, they can come down here and the group are quite welcoming and willing to help,” she said.

There has been a huge increase in interest in family history research in recent years, in part driven by the greater access to records and archives as they are digitised and become available online.

“When I first joined, the records were harder to come by,” local time member of

the family history group Carol Sharp said. Carol joined the group in 2000 and says she is grateful for the good grounding in family history research given to her by dedicated group members, Sue Gri n and Shirley Duckworth.

Carol is now one of the regular Friday volunteers at the library helping others as they uncover their own family’s past. She said requests can be as broad as, “Have you got my family history?” Or they can be helping people find or confirm one particular detail or date. A recent request involved collecting highlights of a gentleman’s cricketing career from local newspapers.

“And we are getting a lot of people who were adopted, that are now looking for their parents,” Carol said. “That’s a big request at the moment, it wasn’t when I first joined but it is now.”

While much more information is now available at the click of a button, there are resources at the library that you won’t yet

find online.

“I always use both,” Carol said.

One important resource that the library holds are microfilms of local newspapers that have not been digitised and made available on the National Library’s online archive, Trove.

We also hold the Orange papers from 1899 through to the present day,” Julie said. “On trove, you can only get them up to the Second World War.”

As part of the Orange Family History Group’s 40th Anniversary Celebrations, they have invited Australian historian and author Kate Gadsby to give a special free presentation on the use of maps when researching family history. Kate spent much of the past 25 years researching the history of the Nubrygyn district, Euchareena for her book Convicts, Capitalists and Corruption and has a wealth of knowledge in this area.

Kate Gadbsy will be speaking at Orange City Library on Tuesday, July 18, at 2pm. Book your place via Eventbrite.

LET’S TALK MONEY with DANIEL MCGREGOR

FREE EVENT: RETIREMENT RESCUE

MONDAY, JULY 24, 2023

How confident are you that your retirement savings are invested the way they should be and that you’re not getting ripped o with fees?

Everyone’s idea of retirement is unique. The type of retirement you’re looking forward to is all about you and that means retirement is about a lot more than money.

In saying that, money is a pretty vital element, though. How much you have in retirement savings, how you choose to invest them, the fees you pay and how much you spend each year are going to determine how long your retirement savings will last.

So, if you want to retire in the style that suits you, it’s vital that you make well-informed decisions about your money, both in the leadup as well as throughout your retirement.

Are you getting close to retirement or recently retired?

If so, you’ve spent your entire working life hoping to get to this point… the point in your life when you can a ord to stop working.

You may have a problem though, and you may not even be aware of it.

I’m seeing people every week who are getting stung with high fees, invested in expensive products, and have gaps in their strategies.

I’m on a mission to show people in Orange how they can get more out of their retirement savings. Why is this important? Because money doesn’t buy you stu , it buys you choices.

When it comes to how people are saving for, and managing, their retirement savings, many people have started thinking there has to be

something better.

Depending on the circumstances, there’s a reasonable chance they could be right.

This is my battle cry to get every retiree or pre-retiree in Orange to make sure they are getting the outcomes they deserve with their retirement savings.

Why a battle cry? Because every week I am seeing people close to or in retirement who can save thousands of dollars a year by using better products and strategies to get improved results for their retirement savings.

It’s a battle cry because I want everyone to simply ask the question: “Compared to what?” when they consider whether they are getting good results.

Your money is yours, so it’s entirely up to you what you choose to do with it. What I’m finding, though, is that for most people – once

the shroud of mystery is removed – when it comes to what their options are, there are pretty powerful actions people can take that will make a substantial di erence going forward.

If you want to learn some of the things you can do to put yourself in the driver’s seat when it comes to getting the most out of your retirement savings, then I’m holding a FREE ‘Retirement Rescue’ seminar on Monday, July 24, at 6.30pm at the Orange Ex-Services Club. Get the facts, be empowered, do the best for you and your family. Simply scan the QR code and book yourself a seat, or give me a call on 0411 484 464.

If you’ve read this far then I hope to see you there!

Cheers, Daniel

ORANGE LIONS CLUB TIME CAPSULE UNEARTHING!

Last week the Orange Lions Club 50 year time capsule was dug up!

The time capsule was buried in Robertson Park back in June 1974, as a unique way for the Club to fundraise for a ladies rest centre and bus shelter.

In 1973 people were invited to purchase an envelope for $1.00 in which to place some items of interest, like photographs, stamps, coins, letters, or trinkets. These envelopes were then interred in the time capsule.

Envelope purchasers were given a card and told to place it in a secure place which could be located in 2023. This card gives authority to the holder to receive the envelope.

Owing to the hard work and diligence of the

1973/1974 Lions members, all of the envelopes appear to be in good condition! That’s an amazing feat!

There were about 250 envelopes inside, so there are many families in Orange who are about to receive a message from half a century ago!

If you haven’t got a card, proof of relationship with the original envelope purchaser will be required!

You can email the Orange Lions on olc.timecapsule@ gmail.com.

Amazing work, Lions!

It was also wonderful to catch up with Orange Lion Jake Butwell at the Lions dinner that evening!

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE?

It’s interesting to hear that senior federal Nationals have now decided to visit our electorate, after being called out in the media.

The storms and floods hit the Cabonne Shire and Wellington on the 13th and 14th of November 2022. It has taken them almost eight months to show up. For residents of disaster-hit areas, the visit is eight months too late.

New community playgroup offers fun for kids and connection for parents and carers

Ragamuffins Playtime is a new community playgroup that’s hoping to bring kids and their parents and carers together for fun and friendship.

Ragamuffins is created and hosted by members of Orange Evangelical Church; part of the church’s ministerial outreach.

“So we’ve been blessed at Orange Evangelical with this beautiful, new building and what we want to do is to use it to serve the community in all sorts of different ways,” Ragamuffins committee member Lydia Smith said.

Orange Evangelical Church opened its purpose-built ministry centre in June last year. The large church building includes a spacious, sunlight hall that will be the home of the Raggamuffins play group.

“As you can see, the kids are having a lovely time,” Lydia said at a ‘soft launch’ of the play group last week.

“It’s a little bit different from a standard playgroup in that we incorporate some developmental and educational activities. So we’ve got sensory play, we’ve got fine motor skill craft — all sorts of things

because we’ve got such a creative and talented team and we’ve had lots of input from different people.”

Lydia, who is a former teacher, librarian, and children’s storyteller said there will be a different theme at the playgroup each week, some of which will include guests from the community

“Every term we will have community visitors, so in this third term, we’ve got Jess Hislop, who is a children’s author and

illustrator,” Lydia explained.

“And in the fourth term, Lorraine Moxey, who’s with the Orange Symphony Orchestra, she’s going to be presenting a musical musical segment for the kids with lots of different types of violin music for the kids to enjoy and dance to and appreciate.”

The playgroup costs $5 per family for a casual visit, which includes a fruit platter for morning tea, or just $30 if you pay for

the whole term.

Lydia said the idea behind the playgroup is to not only provide a fun, weekly activity that kids look forward to, but also a place where parents and carers can meet others and form connections and friendships.

“We are very aware that a lot of young families move here away from family and so it’s important for them to make good, warm connections in the community. We’re really hoping that Ragamuffins will be one of those places,” Lydia said.

“We want carers and grandparents, dads and mums to know that it’s a really quality program and they’re going to be warmly welcomed and make lots of friends.”

Ragamuffins Playtime will be held at the Orange Evangelical Church (OEC), 2 Cottonwood Way, every Friday during the school term.

To book a place or find out more, contact Lydia Smith or Kristy Marshall on ragamuffins@oechuch.org.au, or visit www.oechurch.org.au/ragamuffins

Isabella Betts was diagnosed with Metastatic Osteosarcoma in 2020 at 14 years of age.

For the past 2 and a half years, Isabella has undergone several chemo treatments, surgeries and oncology therapies. Despite all the fantastic e orts by her Australian medical team, the family was delivered the devastating news that there are no viable options for e ective treatment in Australia.

The family has consulted with a medical clinic in Germany and travelled to begin treatment in May 2023. The advanced treatment in Germany and associated costs of medication, travel and accommodation for Isabella and her family mean we will be rallying hard to help financially.

We are asking everyone to do what they can to get involved in the fundraising e orts and o er support where you can.

Vets corner with MULBERRY LANE VET HOSPITAL

Did you know your cat or dog is considered to be a “senior” at 7 years of age? Or that your pet’s food and exercise requirements change dramatically between the ages of 5 and 9? Older pets can bring us so much joy but they need a little extra love and care, to keep them fit and healthy and enjoying their “senior” years!

Your senior dog will be calmer and more in tune with the routine of the household. An older cat will be less keen to climb the curtains, and more likely to spend the day in a sunny spot watching the world go by. Your pet ages approximately 7 years for every 1 of our human years, so regular health check-ups become more important as the years go by.

Pets are living longer these days, thanks to improved medications, and vaccinations which protect them from disease. With increased age, your pet may become less active. This might be part of the normal ageing process, but it is important that your pet is checked regularly by a vet to ensure that he or she isn’t suffering from underlying medical problems.

It’s important to monitor your pet’s food and water intake (plus what comes out of the other end!) as any change in thirst or appetite can be an early sign of conditions like kidney disease or diabetes. It’s also a good idea to monitor your pet’s weight,

Did you know that Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital offers your pet free weigh-ins and nutrition advice? Just come and see one of our friendly nurses. The correct balance of nutrients is essential for staying healthier for longer. Your senior pet’s diet needs to be correct for his or her life stage and for any medical condition, so switching to a specialist pet food can make a big difference to your pet’s wellbeing. ‘I Just Want to Be’: Megan Woods’ rockin’ new single out now

Local singer, songwriter and mother of two, Megan Woods, has just released her second single, the rocky ‘I Just Want to Be’.

Megan’s music blends a variety of influences, including Melissa Etheridge, Jewel, Dolly Parton, The Chicks, and Sheryl Crow to create a sound that is uniquely her own.

After a transformative experience performing in a Melissa Etheridge tribute show, Megan found her inner rock chick and formed a band called The Noisy Boys to support her musical vision. With raw energy, big powerful vocals, and a driving groove, Megan’s music captivates listeners, while her sweet touch adds depth and emotion.

She sees the new single ‘I Just Want to Be’ as a rock anthem for everyone dealing with life’s many stressors.

“You know, as a mother and a wife, life is busy and sometimes you just want to have a minute to yourself — whether it’s just a minute to breathe, or to go out with your girlfriends, or a date night. It’s about letting loose and being free, and forgetting all those things you just have to do,” Megan said.

“I feel like a lot of people will be able to relate to this song, in a lot of di erent ways.”

With her powerful voice and magnetic stage presence, Megan has earned widespread acclaim. In November 2022 she earnt two awards at the Dotted Eight Music Awards, including ‘The People’s Choice’.

Megan made the move from New Zealand ten years ago, where she performed even as a young girl.

“I’ve been on the stage since I was three-and-a-half, so I always knew the stage was calling for me,” said Megan who started on the stage dancing.

Then one day she picked up a guitar that had been left abandoned at her mother’s house, and started strumming.

“My mum asked if I wanted to take lessons. I’m so lucky –she’s always been so supportive”.

Megan has taken the lessons her own mother taught her and wants to be an inspiration for her own children.

“I wanted to prove to my children that if you want to do something, you can. It’s lovely that they get to see that mum has a passion for something, and she’s actually doing something with that.”

And with that in mind, she reached out to local Orange recording studio, Dotted Eight, determined to record a song for her children to listen to, if – heaven forbid –anything ever happened to her. Her collaboration with Dotted Eight proved fruitful, with studio owner Craig Honeysett co-writing ‘I Just Want To Be’ with Megan.

“I knew legacy-wise I just wanted to leave them something, so if anything happened to me before I got old they’d be able to see their mum singing.”

Megan says you will be seeing a whole lot more of her — and in more places. Megan is working towards her dream of touring Australia, sharing her music wherever she can.

“Our goal as a family is to travel around Australia with the kids, and the puppy dog, and their mum will play in little pubs and clubs around Australia.”

Marcia Hines still shining after all these years

Marcia Hines is one of Australia’s most beloved musical treasures and – even after 50 years, 22 albums and countless hits – she’s never lost her love for performing live in front of an audience. Wherever they may be.

Getting out to the regions has always been important to the American-born artist. Marcia attributes the establishment of her career and the relationship she has with Australian audiences to the extensive touring she did as a young performer in Australia.

“Nobody ever toured in the regional areas, and I did!” Marcia explains of her touring back in the day. “That’s where I used to tour a lot… and I think that had a lot to do with the success I’ve had. And I think it’s great to go back and revisit them.”

Hitting the road for the rest of 2023, Marcia is taking her Still Shining — The 50th Anniversary Concert Tour to cities and towns all across Australia.

Her next stop: the Orange Civic Theatre this Saturday and Sunday, July 8-9.

Marcia’s two Orange performances follow hot on the heels of the release of ‘Still Shining: The 50th Anniversary Ultimate Collection’, a new album celebrating her extraordinary recording career.

The album contains 20 career-defining tracks such as ‘Fire and Rain’, ‘From The Inside’, ‘You’, ‘Something’s Missing (In My Life)’, plus two brand new songs: ‘Last One Standing’ and ‘Hard To Breathe’.

Marcia first captivated Australian audiences as a 16-year-old when she moved from the American city of Boston for the production, Hair. She has since gone on to become an icon of

the Australian music industry.

Marcia was Australian Idol’s favourite judge for the show for seven consecutive years, and in 2007 was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. In 2009 she was given the Order of Australia (AM) for her services to the Australian Entertainment Industry as a performer, judge, and mentor, and to the community through a range of charitable organisations.

Even after all these years and numerous multi-platinum records, Marcia said she still gets a thrill out of every new release.

“I have to admit that the release of ‘Still Shining’ is as exciting as the release of my very first album,” she said. “Honestly, some things never get old... it’s an honour to still be releasing music and playing to live audiences around the country.

“I still really love and appreciate performing,” she continued. “And I’ll keep doing it until I’m sick of it.”

Fans attending Marcia’s Orange performances this weekend will also have the opportunity to get to know her a little better, with a “Q and A” session planned following her act.

“When I watch somebody else on stage I always wonder what they’re thinking and so I put together this Q and A,” Marcia said. “But I do start it by asking everyone not to ask anything too embarrassing,” she added with a laugh.

“I look forward to coming up. I know it’s going to be cold but I’ll be fine with my big pu er jacket!”

See Marcia Hines perform at the Orange Civic Theatre at 7.30pm Saturday, July 8, and 2pm Sunday, July 9. Tickets at Ticketek or call 6393 8111.

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

OUTLAST, HIDEOUT

Happy school holidays! The children are home! Enjoy not making school lunches every day and instead become a snack-making slave to the tiny army you created.

I am being unfairly bullied by a 14-year-old neat freak who has decided to spend these two weeks “decluttering and reorganising the kitchen and house” in an intense power grab that I blame on TikTok. Stupid, stupid pantry hacks “reels”. Now I’ve somehow spent $95 on bamboo containers from Kmart and I get yelled at every time I use the cumin powder.

This scenario wasn’t in any of the baby books. In fact, while they all seem to cover a lot about first steps, there’s very little about teenage wannabe influencers, nor anything about the mind games Miss Nine played this morning to get me to the supermarket wearing a pipe cleaner tiara. Now, I have spent almost 15 years wearing handmade jewellery with pride. But having worn a fluorescent yellow wonky pipe cleaner wrapped around my forehead in public, I’m 100 per cent convinced Miss Nine is now just trolling me and laughing at me behind my back.

I now believe I owe it to the parents of the world to write a proper parenting book addressing all this. But when I announce my plans to the kids, Miss 14 says, “Oh god, this won’t end well.” Miss Nine then immediately says lovely, supportive things because she never misses an opportunity to argue with her sister. As their disagreement gets louder and with an increasing number of delusional and irrelevant statements, (“But I AM THE LEGO CITY QUEEN”) I start to realise just how much content will need to be covered in this essential guide.

Having lost this battle, Miss 14 retreats to the safety of her room and lets me know she’ll email through a great new spice rack hack she’s found. Not for the first time, I wonder how I created a person who alphabetises herbs.

I sit down to start my book but I am immediately met with Miss Nine fishing for an argument.

Now, let me explain. Apparently, the worst thing to ever happen to her occurred at school a week ago when she was informed she couldn’t join the debate team because she’s not old enough. Having won 98 per cent of the debates she’s had in her life, she’s taken being omitted from the team personally and is planning a “backchat until you let me join” campaign on her poor teacher once term three starts. To prepare, she’s decided to spend these two weeks at home really honing her skills. Lucky us.

“…and that’s why you need to make Miss 14 take dance lessons from me,” the debate champion concludes. I point out that Miss 14 is in charge of her own body and the only power I have is making her roll her eyes every time I speak.

Miss Nine laments the abolition of slavery (again) but is easily distracted by my offer to not only learn her dance, but also to play in “Lego City” (the space formerly known as our dining table that is now covered in a Lego hospital, five houses, a noodle shop, a swimming pool, three parks, a torso tank, a taco truck, a high school and a police station with cells. It’s attached to my Lego house for “reasons”).

My Lego character immediately steals the taco truck and goes for a joyride to Miss Nine’s delight and I’m reminded (again) how much fun school holidays can be. As I get sentenced to “300 years of yard labour” by the Lego City Queen, I take a moment to appreciate the mess, the noise and the happiness that’s found in the privilege of a little downtime with the kids.

HOME COOKING

with RUBEN LOPEZ MESA

e trendy Spanish pastry: Miguel os

Today I’m bringing you a bespoken secret that is changing the Melbourne pastry scene. My friend Cristina, along with her family, has opened a traditional Spanish ‘pasteleria’ in Prahran Market, South Yarra, that is setting a really high bar of what traditional Spanish sweets and pastries are. ‘La Colmena’ is the name of the business and if you haven’t heard about it, well let me tell you that you soon will. In the same way that cronuts came like a bomb and you could find them everywhere, or that the trendy matcha was in every single cafe in Australia, well I believe today’s recipe is going to be the NEXT BIG THING in this country!

We are talking about traditional pastries that you can find all over Spain from ‘ensaimadas’ in Mallorca, the ‘piononos’ from Granada, the ‘flores manchegas’ from La Mancha, and today’s recipe: the ‘Miguelitos’ from La Roda, Albacete.

And how lucky we are that now all these traditional pastries are trending and Melbournians are getting crazy about them. Hats off to the pioneers from La Colmena for their vision and their hard work to make this possible.

So, if you are lucky enough to visit Melbourne during your school holidays, go and say “Hi” from me. But if you are like me and staying at home, today I’m giving you the home cook version of this sweet treat that’s about to get super popular in town (you’ll see all the cafe owners googling these names and recipes).

So what is a Miguelito, you may be thinking? Well, they are made with two ingredients we all get crazy about it: flaky puff pastry and delicious Creme patissiere. Last time I went back to Spain my friend Marcos brought me a box of them as a gastronomic experience, and I can tell you that my Aussie family was very, very happy with them! Why not try something different this holiday, roll your sleeves up and let’s cook together!

Now, when it comes to making puff pastry from scratch you really need time and skills to make a good one (let me be honest). So, unless you have amazing pastry chef skills, my advice is to get already-made puff pastry from the shops that will make this recipe much easier and more enjoyable (let’s not complicate our lives unnecessarily here right?). So grab a couple of packets of puff pastry and follow the steps at the back of the packet to cook it properly. The idea is to cut rectangles of pastry and put two layers one on top of the other one, creating a sandwich of puff pastry. Then we will fill it up with the yummy creme patisserie.

For the creme patissiere, remember to sift the flour before using it and follow the steps below carefully. Trust me, the more you make it the better you’ll get at it. By the way, a quick note before I give you the recipe, if you feel comfortable enough after making this sweet you’ll also be able to make the Portuguese ‘Pasteis de Nata’ also known as ‘Pasteis de Belem.’ Same ingredients guys, so today’s recipe is basically two in one, winning!

CREME PATISSIERE RECIPE

30 g flour, shifted

80 g sugar

2 egg yolks

300 ml Milk

Flavour options: lemon and orange peel with cinnamon or vanilla (whatever you have at home)

1. Sift flour into a bowl, add the egg yolk, sugar and a bit of milk to combine. Whisk well.

2. Bring the rest of the milk to a boil in a saucepan with your flavour chosen. Turn it o and rest.

3. Pour the milk onto the flour, egg and sugar mixture, mix well and pour it back into the saucepan (if you have citrus peel or cinnamon remove them now).

4. Return to the stove and cook well stirring constantly to cook the flour (make sure you check those corners of your saucepan when stirring)

5. When thick and doesn’t taste like flour. Get a bowl, pour the mixture in and add a layer of cling film on top to prevent skin forming. Let it cool down before using it.

TO ASSEMBLE THE MIGUELITOS

1. Cut the pu into rectangles.

2. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees.

3. On a baking tray add a piece of baking paper and add your 1st layer of pu . Whisk an egg and brush the 1st layer. Then add the second one on top.

4. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes until the sandwich pu has risen and got a bit of colour.

5. Let them cool down for a bit.

6. Cut them in half and add the creme patissiere, either with a piping bag if you have or with a plastic bag cutting a corner. Put the other layer of pu , ‘the lid’, on top.

7. Sprinkle icing sugar on top and serve.

Extra note: You can also make a chocolate version if you prefer. But the traditional creme patissiere is definitely my favourite! Don’t hesitate to tag me on your socials with your creations.

Happy school holidays everyone!

“It’s got two big living areas, a great kitchen with double full-sized ovens and a dishwasher… It’s on a massive block with a massive shed out the back and everything has been done really well, really finished o with thought.”

As well as the huge 14 x 5 metre shed, outside there is also an additional garden shed with a cement floor and a dog yard.

“And it’s got its own water tank, so there’s water for the dogs,” Nicole added. “And the fences are finished o well, so the dogs can’t get out.

“There’s established gardens, a front verandah as well as a great little outdoor entertainment area out the back with a built-in fire pit.”

Another feature of the home is the o ce space, which has both internal and external entry access and is currently set up as a hair salon.

“It’s a home that’s got a lot of potential,” Nicole said, “but you could move in tomorrow and just enjoy it; you don’t need to spend money on it.”

Winter lawn tips from THE AVID GARDENER…

Winter is well and truly here in Orange, and so this Week, Henrietta Hood from The Avid Gardener o ers a few tips to have your lawn looking its best when the warmer seasons return.

Let your mower have a bit of a rest over winter and only mow when necessary at a higher length. The extra leaf on your lawn will encourage the process of photosynthesis (using sunlight energy to produce chemical energy, or food, for the plant).

Rake up excess leaf matter. A little bit of leaf debris is fine, but too much will inhibit sunshine on the grass. Aerate your lawn if you didn’t do it in autumn. Aeration alleviates compaction and helps water and nutrients to reach the root system. Overall this helps to create a stronger, healthier lawn.

Water first thing in the morning on an “as needs” basis. Too much water will encourage compaction of the soil. Watering in the morning helps to remove frost from the leaf.

Winter is probably the best time to address weeds in your lawn. Use a fork to remove them individually…a little bit of weeding every few days soon adds up! For vast lawns, use an all purpose lawn weed control.

Community Support Grants Program 2023 –successful projects announced in a year of record applications.

Orange Credit Union was founded on ‘helping people to help themselves and each other’, with the Community Grants Support Program demonstrating the value the organisation places on developing the region. Team OCU is proud to ‘give back’ to strengthen our community and support those who are making a real di erence to improve the lives of others.

The OCU team was delighted to receive nearly 50 applications representing a wide range of not-for-profit organisations from across the Orange region and beyond. Records show this is the most applications received in a single funding round since the program first started over 15 years ago.

Through the combined e orts of customers

and OCU team, over 190 grants have been allocated to benefit local organisations in Orange, and the surrounding regions have now received grant funding support totalling almost half a million dollars ($500,000) since program first began 17 years ago.

After careful consideration from our Community Support Grants Committee, Orange Credit Union is proud to support the following projects who are making a significant contribution to the community and the lives of others:

• Orange Lions Club – purchase medical equipment for use within the Children’s Ward at the Orange Local Area Health Service - $3,000

• CYMS Netball Club – supply the junior netball teams with new uniforms$5,000

• Orange Chamber Music Festival – support for the ‘Cultured 2024’ community event, bringing together art, music and culture - $4,000

• Pinnacle Dragon Boat Club – purchase a marquee to support the ongoing growth where participants celebrate life, keep fit and connect with others - $5,000

• Orange CYMS Rugby League –contribute to the purchase of a team minibus to facilitate greater opportunity for teams to more actively engage in the community and travel to away games.$5,000

OCU would like to congratulate these successful groups, working together to further develop the community where we work, live and play, for now and future generations.

As a customer-owned bank, Orange Credit Union are 100% owned by members. Profits are ‘given back’ to members and the community through innovation in products and services, local job creation and community support and development.

The next round of the annual Community Grants Support Program is planned to reopen in early 2024. For anyone who would like to register their interest, please visit orangecu.com.au

School Holidays. I have a lovehate relationship with them. It is great that the kids get a couple of weeks o school. It is great that the regular rhythms of the term stop and we can catch our breath. But at the same time, it can be hard to keep soldiering on with the regular things that need to be done. Especially when it is too cold and wet to go outside and play. The family dynamics can become strained. Even the idea of going on a holiday can become just another stressful experience where all you are doing is moving the chaos to another location, and then removing sleep.

For those of us that work from home, you notice a significant shift in productivity as the interruptions seem to come from all di erent directions at intervals of around two minutes. How are the school holidays being spent in your household? Perhaps you are feeling about as excited as I am. Perhaps you have been limping towards these holidays, hanging out for a break after a long term of sickness and you are longing for some refreshment.

Whatever the case may be, we all have a deep longing for rest and refreshment. It is something that is wired into each of us. Our need to rest reminds us that we are finite. We each have our limits. We cannot be everything to everyone all the time. It can be easy to become

overwhelmed with all the demands that are placed on us, so much so that by the time the holidays roll around we can fall into a big heap. But where do we find rest? It seems like such an elusive ideal for so many of us. One of the major themes of the Christian life is the idea of finding rest in God. Augustine, a theologian from the fifth century had this beautiful line in one of his books: “Our hearts are restless, until we find our rest in you.” This longing that each of us feel finds its answer in the person and work of Jesus. In numerous places, Jesus speaks about o ering true rest for the weary and downtrodden. He o ers true and lasting peace for the troubled soul. One of the places Jesus says this is in Matthew 11:28 where he says:

“Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Jesus o ers true and lasting rest for anyone. It is a rest that goes far deeper than a two-week break from routine or a good night’s sleep.

As I face a week of school holidays with all its ups and downs, it is remembering that my true rest is found in Jesus that sustains me in my moments of weariness. As you walk through these term holidays, may it bring you rest, but may you also look for true, deep and lasting rest in the one who is o ering it to you.

THUMBS DOWN to a local car wash. After paying top money for a full car wash the running boards and wheels were still dirty. When I complained they said there are brushes for you to do that. They do not mention before you pay for a full wash that you have to do the hard bits yourself.

THUMBS UP Big thank you to Carmel and Samantha at Orange Regional Conservatorium for their Kodaly Mini Musos lessons. Inspiring to parents and children alike! These two are the best teaching duo to get your littlies into the swing of music.

The waiting game

With Bruce Bennett

What are you waiting for? The weekend; interest rates to go down; maybe your next holiday. We live everyday waiting for something, be it the next little thing or a distant big thing, be it a good thing like a new car or a bad thing like terminal illness to take its course. Life is a waiting game played with hope amidst uncertainty.

But what if you could play that waiting game with certainty? As audacious as it may sound, that is how Christians play it. Don’t misunderstand me, it doesn’t mean that life is always certain and sunny for Christians. That’s ridiculous. But what it does mean is that no matter what life brings (good or bad), the person who entrusts their life to Jesus Christ lives with certainty. The certainty of knowing that absolutely nothing can interrupt Jesus’ commitment to them. His love, his forgiveness and his promise of eternal life.

How can I be so certain? Because in real space and time, Jesus died to defeat sin, he rose to defeat death and lives forever to guarantee an eternal future beyond this di cult and uncertain life. It’s as simple and profound as that.

THUMBS UP to the young woman working at Aldi on Friday, June 23 who treated me so kindly. It helps to restore faith in the younger generation. A whopping big thank you!

A BIG THUMBS UP to Renee and Zac at BNH Blinds for such professional work at my house.

THUMBS DOWN to the Orange City Council. As a ratepayer and business owner for the last 30-odd years, what a waste of ratepayer’s money in Lords Place. Absolute disgrace.

THUMBS UP to the young boy who works at the Snack Shack. He is always polite and e cient, but also patient in training others.

A BUG THUMBS UP to Matt, Holly and Thomas at Railway Meat Blayney. Best meat and friendliest butchers in the district.

THUMBS UP to the lunch menu at the Orange Ex-Services Club. Great meal for $7.90 for members, and not much more for non-members. Great place, thanks!

THUMBS UP to Steve Peterson’s Cross Purposes article in a recent Orange City Life magazine. Golly gosh – I hope it was read by many, as it was a very powerful read. All the best Steve and thank you.

THUMBS UP to Mr Lopes’ “unfinished” comic in a recent Orange City Life magazine, it was very funny and is now on my fridge.

THUMBS UP to the two paramedics who came to help me at Prince Street Medical on Thursday, June 8 and took me to the hospital. Paramedic Alicia and her male assistant (whose name I do not know) made me feel comfortable and that I was in good hands. I appreciated their abilities and also the wonderful sense of humour that they both displayed. Thank you for helping me!

THUMBS DOWN A long overdue thumbs down to the untidy and grubby entrance to the post o ce. Not a good look for Orange residents and visitors.

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Life for excluding their puzzle page from the most recent edition. Is this a permanent change? [No, but sometimes we need the space. Double puzzles this week! - Ed.]

A MASSIVE THUMBS UP to James and the team from Bowie’s Window Cleaning – the exterior of my home and windows look absolutely amazing.

THUMBS UP to the beautiful volunteer at the Orange Blood Bank on Wednesday, June 28. My son thoroughly enjoyed his chat with you. Thank you for making his day and for a great vanilla milkshake!

THUMBS UP to Uncle Neil Ingram Snr for his hard work and dedication in having the Gaanha Bula/Mount Canobolas dual naming application approved. It is now o cial, and the traditional Aboriginal name can now be recognised. This means that now both names, Aboriginal and nonAboriginal, each existing in their own right: Gaanha Bula and Mount Canobolas.
