Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among other things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

Congratulations to everyone behind this year’s Anzac Day commemoration services. As always it is great to see such a big turnout from the community for these events. Speaking with the local RSL sub-branch, they estimate it was one of the biggest attendances they know of at a local Dawn Service.

Congratulations also to the Orange Show Society on another successful show. I, unfortunately, was unable to attend but from all reports and the photos captured by our photographer Henry DeRooy it looks to have been a great day out. I look forward to attending an expanded two-day Orange Show in 2025!

As you will see inside this edition we welcome a new monthly home improvement feature to Orange City Life that we are calling ‘Home Life’. Each month we will be showcasing a range of products and services from local businesses to give you inspiration or ideas and maybe even push you to tackle those home improvement projects you’ve been thinking about. See page 23 for more.

I’m writing this introduction from my home office this week as unfortunately, I’ve been struck down by covid. Never much fun at any time, it certainly disrupted the final days of the school holidays as we had to cancel plans to visit family, but it is what it is…

Until next week! (If I make it)

No More: Orange rallies to end gender-based violence

Hundreds of local women, men, and children gathered in Robertson Park on Sunday afternoon calling for an end to gender-based violence.

Held in wake of the murder of Forbes childcare worker Molly Ticehurst last week, the not-for-profit organisation ‘What Were You Wearing?’ helped coordinate 17 rallies across the country with thousands of people taking to the streets over the weekend.

The ‘No More: National Rally Against Violence’ hosted a number of speakers who called on government action, more funding, and systematic change.

“We are here today because we are sick

of being silenced,” one speaker said.

“I don’t want to be here today, I don’t want to have the conversation about gender-based violence. I want to be home,” another said.

“I want to be going about my everyday normal Sunday… but we have next Sunday though, we hope. Those women will not have another Sunday, or any other day in fact. Their future has been cruelly ripped away.”

Signs in the crowd echoed the message of those speaking.

“Real men respect women,” one read. “Girls just want to feel safe.” “Abuse is not love.” “A man’s hurt feelings does not equal the death penalty.”

The chant “shatter the silence - no

more violence” echoed across the park throughout the rally, while loud cheers and applause supported the speakers who told their own stories.

Sumara, who travelled an hour from her home in Woodstock for the rally, held a sign that stated “It’s not mental health, it’s misogyny.”

“I am just really angry about how women keep getting murdered and it keeps being a bit of a nothing event,” Sumara said.

“There’s not a lot of national attention and it always seems to be getting blamed on mental health, or blamed on some other kind of issue, and just makes me angry that nobody is saying, ‘Hey, men are killing women and why aren’t we stopping them?’”

One speaker called for “media regulation”

on how these deaths are reported, ensuring the full truth is told.

Representatives from organisations such as Housing Plus, Birds in the Bush, and Lifeline spoke about some of the resources available to survivors of domestic violence, but as another speaker stated, “change, it needs to start at a ground level”.

“We must educate ourselves, and we must call out and challenge harmful stereotypes. I would rather lose a friend, than lose another wife.”

At the time of writing, 27 women have been killed in violent incidents in Australia already this year. According to the community organisation ‘Destroy the Joint’ this is 11 more women killed than at the same time last year.

“Enough is enough”:

Mayor, state and federal MPs urge men to speak up and take a stand against domestic violence

Following Sunday’s “No More: National Rally Against Violence” in Robertson Park, Orange’s local, state and federal representatives have all spoken out about the need for men to take a stand and help bring an end to violence against women.

Sparked by the tragic murder of Forbes local Molly Ticehurst, the rally saw hundreds of locals gather to protest in Robertson Park on Sunday afternoon, with similar events drawing thousands of people all around the country.

“On average two women in Australia have been murdered every week this year through gender-based violence,” Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee said via social media on Sunday.

“It’s a truly shocking statistic. Today in Orange a huge crowd rallied at Robertson Park to say enough is enough…

“To effect change, governments of all levels need to lift, as

does our whole society and country,” he concluded.

Member for Orange, Phil Donato, said the message on Sunday was loud and clear, and he praised the speakers for bravely telling their stories.

“It was powerful, raw and emotional,” Mr Donato said “Enough is enough! Too many women dying at the hands of their partners. We must listen and we must take action.”

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling called for men to speak up, call out abusive behaviour and become a visible ally for victims and survivors.

“This means I, and every other good man in our community, needs to speak up and have the conversations we haven’t had before,” he urged via Facebook.

“I call on the good men of Orange and the Central West to step up, speak out, join the chorus and help our boys and young men learn that this can no longer be our legacy.

“It is on us to solve. And our time starts now.”

12 weeks of traffic interruption expected as construction of Hill and Moulder roundabout begins

Orange City Council has begun constructing a new single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Hill and Moulder Streets.

Council crews got to work on Monday, April 29, with the whole intersection closed to traffic while work is underway.

Traffic detours have been put in place via Sale Street, Kite Street, Clinton Street and National Avenue. Traffic will be monitored via traffic control signs and personnel on-site.

Council says that every effort will be made to minimise the impact on the community throughout the estimated 12-week construction period.

“A roundabout at this intersection is desperately needed,” Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said.

“You can be stuck giving way there for a couple of minutes at times and it can really be dangerous. This new roundabout will smooth traffic flow and make the intersection safer for both drivers and pedestrians.”

Along with the new roundabout, work also includes the construction of concrete footpaths, electricity pole relocation, street tree removal, stormwater drainage, water main renewals and line marking.

Orange City Council received $900,000 in funding from the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program to upgrade Hill and Moulder Street intersection.

Council agrees to sell land for greyhound track

An agreement has been reached to construct a new greyhound track in Orange.

Orange City Council has signed a deal to sell the former trotting track on Orange’s eastern outskirts to the Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association (GBOTA) for a new greyhound track.

Last November Orange City Council endorsed the terms of the sale of the land in Perc Griffith Way and noted that a preliminary agreement had been reached. The new agreement is a ‘call option’, a deal in which Council agrees to sell the land within a set period of time and sets out the terms of the sale.

“Greyhound breeders in Orange will be very excited by this latest step,” Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said, welcoming the finalising of the agreement.

“Negotiations have continued since last November and I’m glad Council has been able to reach an agreement.”

The terms of the agreement are to remain confidential, however it includes provisions that within 18 months a DA for the track will be approved

and that a builder will be appointed.

“Council believes that it’s worthwhile to the community to sell this land,” Cr Hamling said, “and the terms of the deal are aimed at delivering some guarantees that the track will be built.”

GBOTA CEO Daniel Weizman says he looks forward to seeing the development take shape.

“Now that the agreement has been signed, we’re edging closer to seeing the Greyhound Centre of Excellence come to life,” Mr Weizman said.

“The Centre will be built to the highest safety and welfare standards and will be a huge benefit to the greyhound racing community.”

He said the centre will include a track, multifunction area and a synthetic soccer pitch.”.

The sale includes the land formerly used as a trotting track, but the adjacent Go Kart Racing track will not be sold.

It’s expected that because Council currently owns the land, planning approval for the project would be decided independently by the Western Regional Planning Panel.

$2.4

to Orange Adventure Playground begins

A$2.4 million upgrade to the Orange Adventure Playground is set to begin this May.

Daracon Landscaping will carry out the project, which includes dismantling the old playground and constructing a new playground and splash park.

Orange Sport and Recreation Community Committee Chair Tammy Greenhalgh is looking forward to seeing work begin on upgrading the popular facility.

“The Adventure Playground has provided decades of enjoyment, but after 22 years of use and exposure to the elements the timber structure is deteriorating and community demand for an upgraded facility has increased,” Cr Greenhalgh said.

“I can’t wait to see local families enjoying a new and improved playground.”

Due to the deteriorating condition of the existing playground the first stage of the project focuses on upgrading the main play areas and central meeting area, as well as the installation of a splash park.

Funding for stage one of the upgrade has come from three NSW Government grants and $292,506 from Orange City Council.

The upgrade was designed by consultants Civille Pty Ltd after consultation with the community and the original Adventure Playground committee.

Council says most of the improvements will be delivered in the first stage of the project and further

stages of the design will be delivered depending on future funding availability.

Parts of the original playground that are suitable for reuse have been included in the new design, including the Liberty Swing, wooden turrets and other timber features.

Fence pickets engraved with the names of residents who donated to the original playground will be available for collection once they have been removed. Council will advise the community on the process for this when the time comes. Any pickets not collected and in suitable condition will be reused in the new playground.

The first stage of the upgrade is estimated to be finished in December, weather permitting.

LET’S TALK MONEY

ARE YOU MAKING USE OF THE BEST MONEY TOOL AVAILABLE?

As we now get towards the end of another financial year, people often start to think about tax deductions. Yet, many don’t take advantage of the best tax break in town!

The government knows that most of us aren’t great at saving money. So, to help encourage us, they are offering a fantastic way for you to keep more of your money by paying less tax. This is especially true if you earn more than $45,000.

Once you earn more than $45,000, you move from the 19% tax bracket into the 32.5% tax bracket and the tax rates go up from there. However, there is a way to reduce your tax rate to 15% on some of your money… if you’re paying 32.5% tax, then once you factor in the Medicare Levy of 2%, that means a tax saving of 19.5%, or in other words, a guaranteed return of 19.5%!

Have I got your attention??

So, how can you get this magical tax break? Simple! You make extra contributions to a special account held in your name… and that account is your superannuation.

Now, before I lose you, stick with me. What is superannuation? Put simply, it’s a tax-effective way to save for retirement… and who doesn’t want to retire one day?!

There is no mystery here. Super is your money and you have enormous control over it!

If you’ve ever thought of superannuation in a negative light, then it’s time to flip your thinking. If you ever want to be able to afford to stop working, then you need to create wealth. And the best money tool available to you to be able to do that is your superannuation. We are talking about money for jam!

MONEY FOR JAM

noun phrase

British, informal

: money that is easily earned or gotten : easy money

If that’s something you’re interested in, then book your free initial appointment now, so we have time to make use of this before the end of financial year. While it is most definitely money for jam, there are different types of contributions and different caps that are applicable depending on the type of contribution, as well as things like catch up contributions and spouse contributions you could potentially take advantage of. So, it pays to get some help, firstly, to make sure you don’t get it wrong, and secondly, to maximise

the results you can get.

That leads to another chance to flip your thinking… if you’ve ever thought about getting financial advice but thought of it as an expense, then now’s the time to start thinking of it as an investment.

And to maximise your return on that investment, it is my opinion that the advice you get should be 100% independent. That’s why I choose to be an independent financial adviser.

Let’s catch up and get you on track for the retirement you deserve. Then you can let your friends and family know just how powerful superannuation is. Let’s not keep these things a secret from anybody!

ART REVIEW

Orange Regional Gallery Director

Striking images combine with ethereal fragrances in special event

Join us at 6pm on Thursday 16 May at Orange Regional Gallery for Synesthesia—a unique and fascinating evening of conversation, captivating images and ethereal fragrances.

This special fundraising event, organised by the Friends of Orange Regional Gallery (FORG) will feature critically acclaimed photographer Tamara Dean and Scentsmith Ainslie Walker in discussion about their ten-year collaboration, in which fragrances and images are developed and presented together, creating an altogether new experience.

Synesthesia refers to the way in which an experience through one of our senses can cross over and trigger a simultaneous experience in another.

Tamara and Ainslie’s partnership brings together years of experience in each of their fields, combined in ways that push traditional boundaries and o er audiences new sensory experiences. Through their work they also address their deep concerns for the environment, which is an aspect they will discuss on the night.

Both Tamara and Ainslie have personal connections to Orange and, thanks to FORG, we are looking forward to welcoming them back. The audience will have the opportunity to hear from both Tamara and Ainslie while viewing photographs and sampling specially created fragrances. The two have co-developed a particular Eau de Parfum, ‘Forīs’ which they describe as ‘Dry woods play with sheer, ethereal and earthed woody florals. A twilight

meander through wild woods.’

It promises to be a fascinating evening, with proceeds going towards the acquisition of artworks for Orange Regional Gallery’s Permanent Collection.

The Friends of Orange Regional Gallery is an active, not for profit, community organisation with more than 300 members. Over the past 35 years FORG has supported the Gallery through fundraising and fostering art appreciation within the community.

Tickets for the Synesthesia event are $40 and available by visiting the Friends of Orange Regional Gallery Eventbrite page: Synesthesia.eventbrite.com.au. Refreshments will be provided.

RURAL HEALTH MATTERS

a sense of community

One of the many benefits of living in regional Australia is the collective sense of togetherness. We have higher levels of social cohesion, social capital and informal support networks that are created by, and within, our rural communities. This sense of togetherness is an important protective factor for the mental health and wellbeing of all of us who live outside urban centres. This does not, however, protect us from feelings of isolation, prejudice, anxiety and depression.

Three quarters of the LGBTQIA+ community nationwide have a lived experience of mental ill health at some stage in their life, which is far greater than the national average.

Mental health support relies upon appropriate, safe, timely, affordable, and inclusive health services. As we are all aware, access to regional and rural health services, including mental health support services, is increasingly difficult. We can all help reduce the burden for those at greatest risk by fostering those elements of rural living which create the sense of togetherness.

Rainbow and Pride events are held throughout our region and are wonderful examples of communityled events that aim to build social cohesion through ‘a spirit of acceptance and inclusivity’. The tangible positive mental health impacts of such moments of social

cohesion cannot be underestimated. For some, these are lifesaving. They provide a much-needed space for promoting health and wellbeing within our community in ways that all of us can both support and benefit from.

As a GP, I urge our rural communities to actively engage and support our LGBTQIA+ members. Let’s champion acceptance and support, fostering environments where LGBTQIA+ individuals feel valued, respected, and secure. Together, we can break down barriers to mental health support and ensure that everyone in our rural areas feels embraced and assisted, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Dr Chris Hayward is a GP in Orange and Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney School of Rural Health.

“People don’t realise how much the Royal Far West does to help the people,” says Pauline Jones, a hardworking fundraiser and current president of the small local branch of the Royal Far West.

The Royal Far West Children’s Health Scheme was founded in 1924, the brainchild of the Cobar-based Reverend Stanley Drummond, who began bringing children from remote areas to a seaside respite camp at Manly. When a local doctor, George Barron, noticed the medical needs of these children that weren’t being met where they lived, he offered his services free of charge. Today, the Royal Far West continues to provide important health services to country kids, much of it funded by people like Pauline, her small committee and generous donations from supporters.

“Mrs Bragg, at least once a week, gives us $10 whether it’s raffles or just donations,” says Pauline, who contacted Orange City Life to be present as she presented Pat Bragg with a certificate of

Royal Far West thanks Orange supporters

appreciation last month.

“And James there,” she continues, “gave us a bag of coins the other day, $208 in 20-cent pieces! And we’ve still got the dollars and fifties to come!”

Pauline joined the organisation about 12 years ago and has been President for almost nine years now.

“My children went down to Royal Far West and got braces because I was a worker and I couldn’t afford $4000… this is my way of saying, thank you,” Pauline explains.

Secretary Beryle Conran joined 17 years ago after a friend explained what the Royal Far West did. She and Pauline now fundraise together week-in, week-out, selling raffle tickets and making items to sell at markets and shows.

“We have our meetings every two months, we work as hard as we can when we can, and every cent we raise goes to the Royal Far West ...The funds are sent out to the kids to be helped,” she says.

But they could also really use a hand, Pauline says.

“People are too busy in this day and age, but they could contact us and volunteer with us if they are able… knitting, sewing, anything to make a product that we can sell.

“Beryle and I… my knitting is always in the bag and we are always knitting, always sewing. we go to the markets, we do all the little shows. Well, to be honest, we go wherever they don’t charge us as a lot of markets charge anything from $50 to $90 and we can’t afford that,” she explains.

When their Mother’s Day raffle finishes up, Beryle and Pauline will move on to selling tickets for their Father’s Day Raffle and then the big Christmas raffle, with a first prize of $500 in vouchers.

“Find us!” says Pauline, as to where you can purchase a raffle ticket. “Usually on Tuesday and Wednesday we are at Aldi, and on Friday and Saturday we’re at Bunnings!”

Tickets for the Royal Far West raffles can be purchased at any time from Nextra Newsagency in the Orange City Centre. If you would like to know more about the Royal Far West or to lend a hand, contact Beryle Conran on 0428618807 or 63618807.

MAKE RAMIENS YOUR VERY FIRST-STOP FOR ALL HOME PROJECTS

Growing-up within the sight, smell, and sound of the local timber-mill, Heather Ramien, has always loved wood.

Which is one reason why, Ramiens Timber should be your first-stop shop for all wood products, whether it be decking, windows, mouldings, pergolas, or doors.

“As I walked to school in Cobar, each day, the timber mill was across the road so, in a sense, I grew-up with the awareness of it all around me,” Heather explained.

“I love timber, the smell of it, it’s warmth, it’s so natural, it brings heart to anything and is so versatile… it’s also renewable,” she added.

Dubbo is very lucky to have one of the State’s longestestablished and most prestigious suppliers of wood of every variety on our doorstep. With her husband, Max, coming from four generations of timber millers and merchants in western NSW, there’s no-one better for anything in timber you need.

“We worked for years with Max’s father and brother, and eventually bought-out the business ourselves.

“We’re totally unique, we were

Cypress millers and merchants for decades, we now retail as many different species and formats of timber you can imagine,” Heather said proudly.

Centrally-located from their purpose-designed outlet at 1–15 Cobbora Rd on the corner of Fitzroy and Erskine Streets, and with plenty of on-site and off-

On Anzac Day, we commemorate the landing of Australian and New Zealand soldiers at Anzac Cove on the 25 th of April, 1915.

The day is also a time to reflect on the extraordinary sacrifice of all Australians who have served in all military operations through the generations

It was heartening to see such strong support for Anzac Day this year, with

huge numbers of attendees across the region.

This year, I attended dawn services at Bathurst and Orange (and then the Sub-Branch’s breakfast), before heading to a mid-morning service in Mumbil (near Burrendong Dam), and then to Stuart Town where I delivered an address.

After attending Orange RSL Sub Branch’s lunch at Orange ExServices Club, I then went to Molong where I viewed the new memorial to contemporary conflicts and peacekeeping operations at Molong

ANZAC

DAY

RSL and drew the monster raffle.

After that, I returned to Orange for the Retreat ceremony.

Thank you to everyone who attended a service or paused to remember in their own way.

The sacred duty to remember the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform is the responsibility of all Australians. It currently rests with us, and we will, in turn, pass it to future generations.

This year across our region, that sacred duty was fulfilled.

EVENTS

A NEW WAR MEMORIAL FOR MOLONG

Igot to check out the extraordinary new modern conflict silhouette memorial garden in Molong on ANZAC Day.

The recently completed project, a cocommunity project between RSL NSW Molong Sub-Branch and Molong RSL Club, commemorates contemporary conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Supported with a $10,000 Federal Government Saluting Their Service grant, the memorial features iron silhouettes depicting Royal Australian Navy Leading Seaman Kane Bird, Australian Army Warrant Officer Tom Squires, Royal Australian Air Force Warrant Officer David Betts, and military service dog Sarbi. Well done to Marc Mathews, Molong RSL, and all involved in this valuable and much needed project.

IN THE ORANGE REGION

AtOrange’s ANZAC Day lunch it was an honour to catch up with many of our local ex-servicemen and women, including two extraordinary World War Two veterans.

Gwenda Garde is 102 this year and worked in signals with the Navy. She and other trailblazing women listened to Japanese radio traffic and signals during the war, and passed them on for decoding. It was top secret, painstaking and exhausting work as they were the eyes and ears of the Allied war effort in the Pacific.

her experiences during the Battle of Britain including how she survived a strafing from a German combat aircraft.

Gillie Street is 104 this year and served with the Royal Air Force’s Bomber Command. She was not only a witness to history but an active participant in it. She told me about

Remarkable (and very humble) women from an extraordinary generation!

Lest We Forget.

On the Tuesday before ANZAC Day, it was an honour to join the City of Orange RSL Sub-Branch at their pre-Anzac Day Luncheon.

It was a lovely opportunity for members of the local veteran community to gather, share stories, and reflect ahead of official commemoration events on Thursday. Thank you for inviting me to join you at this wonderful gathering.

Abig

thank you to Yr 11

James Sheahan Catholic

High student Sam Bayada who laid a wreath on my behalf at the 11am Orange ANZAC Day service and then rode shotgun with me on our trip to Molong.

Sam is currently participating in RDA Central West’s Ten4Ten mentoring program and I have it on good authority that he laid the wreath with great skill!

Thank you Sam! Awesome work!

ORANGE RSL SUB-BRANCH PRE-ANZAC LUNCHEONTHANK YOU SAM!

On the weekend, I attended the ‘No More’ rally in Orange. Hundreds of residents came together to say ‘enough is enough’ in response to the devastating rates and impacts of gender-based violence in Australia. Similar rallies were held around the nation.

THE SHOCKING STATISTICS

This year in Australia, more than 30 women have been murdered through gender-based violence. Half of these women have been in regional parts of the country. Devastatingly, that’s an average of two women killed every week. These are truly shocking statistics.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

To effect real change, governments of all levels need to lift, as do our communities and our country.

There are a number of things that governments can be doing right now to stop gender-based violence.

THE ROLE OF EDUCATION

Education has a huge role to play. It’s important that primary and secondary schools are actively involved in teaching the principles of respect and equality.

If young people are able to gain an early understanding about how wrong domestic violence is, it may help prevent it in the future — saving lives, and preventing trauma.

GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE MUST STOP

THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

The influence of social media in developing dangerous attitudes towards women is of great concern to me. The amount of violence (some of it sexualised), and hatred that is directed towards women on these platforms is horrendous, and I worry about the influence this disturbing content is having on young men.

URGENT REFORM OF BAIL LAWS REQUIRED

Our criminal justice system also has a big role to play, with the tightening of bail laws urgently needed.

MORE FUNDING NEEDED

While there has been welcome funding made available for domestic violence refuges in our region, not all regional areas have them, and ongoing funding of domestic violence services is required on the double.

It’s been reported that despite having a population 1.5 million people greater than Victoria, the NSW government spends less than half of what Victoria does on domestic and family violence services.

A LETTER TO THE PM

I have joined fellow independent Members of Parliament in writing to the Prime Minister detailing the extent of the crisis and emphasising the urgent need to deliver change. The letter requests four main things;

1. A comprehensive review of sentencing across the justice system, child support system and the family court system. Potential actions could include mandatory sentencing, harsher consequences for breaching AVOs, and a National Domestic Violence Register.

2. Cracking down on harmful, unregulated industries like violent online porn, hateful social media influencers and problem gambling, whilst increasing funding for frontline services like affordable housing for women escaping violent relationships.

3. Proper funding of consent and respectful relationships education.

4. A meeting with the PM to discuss these issues when Parliament resumes. You can read the entire letter on my Facebook page, or find it on my website: www. andrewgeemp.com.au

WE ALL HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY

Everyone in our community can and must do their part to make a difference and end violence against women. Achieving this should not be beyond our modern and prosperous Australia of 2024. Let’s all commit to making our region and country a safer and better place. Together, we can do it.

Congratulations to Show President Peter Naylor, Secretary Tess Crossley, the entire Orange Show Society committee and

This year there was a lot to love, with lawn mower races, wood chopping, a disco roller fashion show, dog high jump, and even a dinosaurs display!

The Show also featured an incredible line-up of musical talent, with a jam-packed program of live music playing all day on the main stage. It was also great to catch up with Scotty Vandenberg who entered a stunning piece titled ‘Flower’ into the art show. What an extraordinary painting!

Congratulations to Yound Woman winner Emily Wykes and Rural Achiever winner Elizabeth Argue (pictured). You just can’t beat a country show!

UPDATE: ORANGE SENIORS VILLAGE HUB

Following my recent articles on the Orange Seniors Village Hub, I have finally had a response from the Minister for Social Services about my request for funding for this vital service to be reinstated, and to meet with me urgently.

Unfortunately the news is not positive.

In the Minister’s response she stated that her department “alerted the Village Hubs to a recent opportunity to apply for funding under the Strong and Resilient Communities - Inclusive Communities program. I have been advised that Orange City Council submitted an application for this grant opportunity”.

Unfortunately this response seems to be a case of smoke and mirrors.

When I contacted Orange City

Council to verify whether that funding opportunity existed they said that in March last year they had made an application for funding but the program referenced had nothing to do with seniors.

This is a very disappointing response from the Federal Government. To add insult to injury there was also no acknowledgment of my request for a meeting.

The reality is that there are no substitute funding opportunities to apply for — despite the letter suggesting there was.

While I understand that the Minister takes advice from her department, this letter and the response is sadly more spin than substance.

Despite this setback I’ll keep pressing the Federal Government for more seniors funding. I still hold out hope that some type of funding may be delivered in the upcoming budget.

Big Crowds for Anzac Day Commemora ons

Large numbers attended Anzac Day commemorations in Robertson Park on Thursday, April 25, with the local RSL Sub-Branch president Chris Colvin saying it was the best-attended Dawn Service he’s presided over.

“To be honest it was the best and biggest dawn service I’ve seen,” Mr Colvin said. “It was the biggest we’ve ever had – the park was full!”

Ahead of the morning service, crowds lined Summer Street for the traditional Anzac Day march, which saw large numbers of local school children taking part, despite Anzac Day falling in the school holidays.

“The main service was fantastic and the flyover was absolutely brilliant,” Mr Colvin said of the Hercules C-130 aeroplane that did a lowaltitude flyover of Robertson Park.

“It was just one of those beautiful days,” he continued. “Also, I’d like to thank all the volunteers, all schools that marched and the great turnout of the general public… It was a good day.”

Romantic getaway

(20 YEARS OF MARRIAGE VERSION)

In the last week of the holidays, we send the kids off to their grandparents for a few days so we can work and travel to Sydney for a medical appointment for me. It’s our first night away together in years so, anticipating romance, I book a nice-looking room with ocean views, and pack a bottle of one of Angullong’s cheaper reds.

On the drive I let hubby choose which Taylor Swift album we listen to, as I’m a loving wife and always willing to compromise. He’s become a bit of a fan because, when I was angry with him 12 years ago, I logged into his Facebook account and signed him up to every Tay-Tay fan page I could find as revenge. Infuriatingly, he thought it was hilarious, however he has slowly become conditioned to enjoy her music. Wildest Dreams is

his favourite song, and we listen to three albums on the way to the beach.

First impressions of our $389-a-night room: you know you’re staying in a quality place when you see that the shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion are locked to the wall. Also, they all appear to be the same product and smell like your Aunty Susan’s essential oils.

Still, we walk into the main room child-free and ready for a fun night alone together. We are greeted with a spectacular ocean view, a gorgeous balcony overlooking Manly beach and a luxurious looking king-sized bed. As all long-term married couples will know, this means one thing: intense psychological warfare with your spouse to establish dominance over the pillows and bed space. No, this is not a euphemism of any kind.

At home I own 58.3 per cent of the pillows and he occupies 62 per cent of our bed. Battle lines were drawn decades ago by routine and complacency. But a hotel? Game on! (Happy newlyweds who are scratching your heads right now, ignore this and ignore your bliss. But mark my words, your turn will come.) Our bed siege is taken up a level when the beautiful man I married opens the storage cupboard and finds a fifth pillow. I try to claim it, but he suggests we take turns holding it as the little spoon when we cuddle. I agree but, come night time, I refuse to relinquish it, as expected.

We hit the glorious beach and quickly realise it’s not the 12 degrees it is at home, and our Kathmandu puffers put us wildly out of place. Still, we stroll the full length of Manly beach and it’s just so much nicer than my daily walk around East Orange. I grew

up on the beach and miss it desperately as I inhale the sea air. A young couple walk past us, playing peekaboo with the giggling baby strapped to the front of dad’s chest. They look so happy that I announce to hubby I’m going to go and tell them about teenagers. He grabs my hand and leads me in the opposite direction to prevent this, and I begrudgingly enjoy the warmth and love in his grasp. I take note of their car rego, because I can always leave a note on their windscreen, I guess.

The beach is so nice we stay to watch the sunset, before choosing ice-cream for dinner and texting a photo of this to Miss Nine, who replies with disgust at our audacity. I relax against hubby to watch the moon rise over the ocean, and feel incredibly grateful not only for our puffer jackets but for a magical 24 hours with the man I love.

Fourteen by Shannon Molloy

JUNE 6

The year is 1999 and Shannon has a secret… Shannon Molloy is a year 9 student at an all-boys rugby-mad Catholic school in regional Queensland, with a secret that no one can ever find out. Shannon is gay.

Based on the best-selling memoir by awardwinning journalist Shannon Molloy, Fourteen is the inspirational true story of growing up gay in central Queensland, transformed into a powerful must-see theatre production by nationally acclaimed Shake & Stir Theatre Co.

Set to a nostalgic mixtape of 90s bangers from all your faves, from Shania Twain to The Spice Girls, Fourteen addresses the trials and tribulations of growing up with honesty, humour, and heart. Equal parts uplifting and heart-wrenching, we follow Shannon in a year of self-discovery set amidst a backdrop of torment, bullying and betrayal – not just at the hands of his peers, but by the adults who were meant to protect him.

This moving coming-of-age memoir about adversity and tragedy is also a story of resilience, hope and hilarity – thanks to the love of a group of close-knit friends, a fiercely protective family, an extraordinary mother and… S Club 7.

So press play on your Discman, lose yourself in a pumping 90s pop remix and take a technicoloured trip back to your teens. This is Fourteen.

Four

left feet, but Ben and Charlie are ready to tango!

With the Orange Theatre Company (OTC) preparing to launch its latest production, The Addams Family, at the Orange Civic Theater on May 10, stars Ben McGrath and Charlie Parker say they are ready to tango.

Created in 1938 by cartoonist Charles Addams, the fictional Addams family have had longlasting appeal. They first graced our TV screen in 1964 and in the 60 years since the Addamses have featured in numerous books, movies, video games, animated series and more. Most recently, the Addams family were introduced to a new generation of fans through the hit Netflix series, Wednesday.

This musical comedy adaptation features an all-original story with music and lyrics by composer Andrew Lippa and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice.

“My experience of the Addams Family is the really early black-and-white TV show, so I didn’t really know anything about the production until they decided to put it on but it’s actually really funny and I love the music!” says local school teacher Charlie Parker, who stars as family matriarch Morticia Addams.

“It’s got that Latin feel…the music’s terrific. The cast are fabulous. The choreography is really hard, but it’s gonna look amazing!”

Charlie has had a life-long love for music and performance and still remembers the feeling when she first stepped onto the Orange Civic Theatre stage for an Eisteddfod in 1983.

Performing in cover bands throughout Sydney for many years, it was only when she returned to Orange that she rediscovered her love for the stage.

“Mamma Mia in 2022 — that was the first production I was in as a grown-up human…. It took me a couple of years to get the gumption to put myself out there again, but when Mamma Mia came up, I thought I couldn’t let anyone else do that, I had to do that. And then I got the bug!”

What’s On at the Con…

Acacia Quartet with international guests Emile Cantor and Laurentiu Sbarcea

See one of Australia’s most respected string ensembles, the Accia Quartet perform with international guests Emile Cantor on viola and Laurentiu Sbarcea on cello at the Orange Regional Conservatorium this Friday, May 3.

Friday, May 17 Piano Forte — Faculty Concert

In this one-of-a-kind event, the Orange Conservatorium piano faculty staff present a concert program that promises to be as diverse as it is delightful.

Talented pianists from the faculty will take center stage in the Con’s magnificent auditorium, showcasing their virtuosity and passion for music. The concert’s repertoire remains a splendid mystery, a surprise bouquet of musical genres. From the intricate compositions of classical masters to the soul-stirring rhythms of jazz, and perhaps a seamless blend of both, the evening is guaranteed to be a rich tapestry of piano artistry. For tickets and more event information, visit orangecon.org.au/events

Ben McGrath, who plays Morticia’s amorous husband Gomez, starred in the Orange Theatre Company’s 2023 production of Footloose and has been active in theatre in Orange and his hometown of Bathurst for more than a decade.

“I think it’s just a generational thing. It started with my grandfather doing it years ago and then my Dad was on stage from a young age as well. So, I think it just naturally happened,” says Ben, who has played the role of Gomez before in Bathurst.

“I’m lucky enough to do the role twice,” he says. “I love how clever and funny the language is. It’s like when you watch your favourite movie. You watch it over and over again and you find bits that you just didn’t notice before. That’s what I’ve been able to find in this show, so it’s been really exciting.”

While Ben and Charlie are both charismatic performers and talented vocalists, they admit that the choreography in this show has been a challenge for them.

“As – dare I say it — two non-dancers. It’s been four left feet trying to do a tango!” he laughs.

“Yes,” says Charlie, “We’re really out of our comfort zone here! Our poor choreographer is just so patient and kind and lovely.”

“But we have fully mastered the dip, as you just saw, so we’re ready!” adds Ben. “And I actually like this… going from Footloose, where I got a lead in a dancing show, which shouldn’t have happened, to a show where I can just dance like a dad is perfect!

“Come see it!” says Charlie. “It’s a great show, it’s funny and from grandparents to younger kids, it’s got something that will appeal to everyone. It’s just kooky fun!”

The Orange Theatre Company’s production of The Addams Family will be brought to life (or death) at the Orange Civic Theatre between May 10 and May 18. Tickets at Ticketek or call 63938111.

There are over 250 species of Camellias (and a staggering 20,000 cultivars) all of which belong in the family Theaceae (the Tea family). They are native to Asia, most particularly China and Japan.

Whilst the number of species is vast, probably the most commonly planted in the Orange region are Camellia reticulata, Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua. The latter is the fastest growing and probably the most popular. Although, in my opinion, Camellia reticulata and Camellia japonica produce better blooms. Camellia reticulata is considered a somewhat old-fashioned species generally found in older, established gardens and can grow to a medium to large tree in the right spot. They are still available from good nurseries.

Camellias are a shade loving evergreen tree that thrives in an acid soil. Given their love of shade, they make a great underplanting tree.

They can manage some sun once well established and are relatively drought tolerant but having a shallow root system, appreciate deep mulching and a regular drink.

They are frost hardy, but prolonged periods

of rain or frost can damage the flowers. In the Orange region, depending on the species, they flower from early autumn, throughout winter and into early spring.

The variety of flowers is many. They range from singles, semi-doubles, rose and peony forms. They come in a wide array of whites, pinks, and reds. Some present as bi-coloured or will produce different colours on different stems of the same plant.

Camellias make a good privacy hedge as they can be pruned to shape. They can also be espaliered but if you decide to do so, plant against a southern or eastern wall, so they only get morning sun. A western facing wall is not advised. They can be standardised and will happily grow in a pot. They make a beautiful cut flower.

Camellias are propagated by hardwood cuttings once flowering has finished. Now is the time to plant new trees. Visit your local nursery or Bunnings to find them.

Did you know that black and green tea is made using the leaf tips of Camellia sinensis? It is the only species that is used in tea production.

In Chinese culture, the Camellia flower is considered a symbol of wealth and long life.

Interior design tips for the cooler seasons

As the days are getting longer, we retreat indoors into the comfort of our homes. The cooler season calls for family to gather around the fireplace, and friends to wine and dine near the kitchen. Here are five easy ways to transform your interior just in time for winter. Bring the outdoors in with gorgeous florals and greenery. Introducing fresh plants into your space can make a world of difference. Not only do they look beautiful, but plants also freshen the air indoors and bring life to your space. This also provides

an opportunity to change around your pot plants seasonally or choose new vases to welcome in lush greenery and florals around empty corners in your home.

Switch out your rug. Rugs can transform the look of a room by simply changing materials and finishes. For those looking for a rug to weather the winter months, a thick woollen rug is ideal for providing warmth and comfort underfoot that will hide your hard floorboards and absorb heat.

Layers are your best friend. The cooler season calls for thick textured throw blankets and oversized cushions. Follow a

general tonal theme when picking décor for your sofa, armchair or bedroom to make sure your home has a consistent look. This includes table lamps or floor lamps to provide a soft warm glow. Find artwork with pops of colour and visual texture for added interest.

Get organised. Stylish cabinets, buffets, and shelving can be used to hide your clutter and add to your individual look. There is a huge variety of home storage solutions to choose from, ranging from materials such as timber, metal and glass. With the right storage solutions, you can make your home look neat and stylish

without sacrificing your interior design. Introduce a new colour palette. Rich, dark tones are great choices for the colder months. This can include charcoal, maroon, khaki or navy décor for a bolder look in your space. These tones offer a cosy, comforting feel and can balance out perfectly when paired with lighter accents for a contrast.

Make your house feel like a home and discover furniture and homewares collections that will live with you through every moment. Visit OZ Design Orange at 168 Lone Pine Ave.

vehicle is particularly appealing. Imagine not having to get out of your car to open and close a gate as it’s sleeting and -2 degrees! At the touch of a button you’re through your gate and safely home.

WHAT’S HAPPENING @ OCU

Supporting Locals. OCU dedicated to regional banking in Orange & surrounding areas.

Orange Credit Union is the leading customer-owned bank in Orange, opened in 1964 and is celebrating servicing Orange and its surrounds for 60 years this December.

As part of an ongoing commitment to the regional community, OCU has so far invested over $1million dollars to member experience enhancement projects, including extensive renovations

to the Summer Street branch, new website, and this week’s launch of the new Mobile Banking app.

CEO Lewis von Stieglitz says, “This investment is a huge vote of confidence in regional NSW and will enormously benefit our existing and future members.”

The renovations to the branch have been well received, with members enjoying the updated aesthetics, but also the privacy and security considerations.

Stacey Roberts, Member Banking

Manager, explains that “over the past several years concerns have been raised by members and staff around private or sensitive conversations, such as planning when a loved one has passed away or discussing scam and fraud scenarios. The new private spaces and updates to technology in those spaces allows us to better serve our members and has dramatically improved the branch member experience.”

Orange Credit Union encourages members to bank they way they want to

bank, and the investment in website and mobile app upgrades offer a safe and convenient way for members to access their banking on the go or from the comfort of their own home.

Each year OCU puts profits back into the community through the Community Support Grants Program, which received over 35 applications and will inject $25,000 into local community for projects and activities.

Visit orangecu.com.au to find out more, or to switch to a local bank.

CROSS purposes

THE REAL JESUS

I think many people have a view of Jesus as a bearded, harmless, nice man who died an unfortunate death. But this is not the Jesus of history. The Jesus of the Bible had power over sickness, disease, demons, and even death.

When Jesus’ friends were in a boat heading across the sea a furious storm came up. The disciples were scared for their lives, but when Jesus calmed the storm, the disciples were more afraid of Jesus than the storm. When Jesus entered the temple and saw the market place the authorities had set up, Jesus got angry. He turned over the tables, sent animals running and said – How dare you turn my Father’s house into a corrupt market. Does this sound like the nice Jesus many people think him to be?

Jesus knew who he was and knew his power. But Jesus’ willingly went to the cross where he chose to die for our sake. Is your view of Jesus one of a meek man who taught people to be nice to others? Let me encourage you to think again and read the accounts of his life, death and resurrection and engage with him as he really is.

FAMILY: LIFEandTIMES with Angus

Over these past few weeks, we have spent quite a bit of time with our extended family. Spending time with family is something that we don’t get to do too often as our family is scattered all over the country, with the closest being over three hours away. There are times when we lament that we don’t have the grandparents that we can call on at the drop of that hat to come look after the kids, or that our children don’t have their cousins living nearby. But that’s just how it goes. This means that whenever an opportunity presents itself to see our family, we take hold of it with both hands. Our school holidays were filled with visits from grandparents, cousins, as well as a gathering of my wife’s extended family, including a distant uncle visiting from Kansas. All this has reminded me of how precious family is. There is something fundamentally special about the bonds that a family has. The old saying that ‘blood is thicker than water’ is certainly true. But not every family is perfect. In fact no family is perfect. Family can be a source of pain and tragedy. But even in families that have been fortunate to not have experienced these sorts of hardships, family ties change over time and drift can happen. I think of my own cousins that I grew up with: when we were young we were close. Now we only see each other every few years at funerals. Family is special, but it is also hard at times and no matter

how di cult it can be, it will always remain a family. As a Christian, I have two families. I have my own family and parents, children, cousins, aunts, and uncles but I also have my church family. One of the many images The Bible uses to describe the church is that of a family. I think that is really important. It says something about what it is supposed to be… a place of care, love, support that is bound together by something deeper than just a friendship. By blood. No family is perfect. No church is perfect. To its shame, the church has in places done incredible wrong. But those wrongs are in no way what the church is meant to be. It is meant to be a family united by blood. The blood of Jesus. That is what defines the church. People who trust in Jesus to rescue them. This is what I love about my own church. That whilst we are certainly not perfect, like every family we have stu we need to work out. But even so, there is something special that binds us together just like my family that I was born into. If you ever want to explore this more, you will always be welcome. Whilst it will be some time before I see my parents and siblings again, I know that we are still a family and that is something very special. And I know that whilst I am not with them, I am part of another family that is just as special.

CWA studies Fungus and Fire ants

Did you know that Orange is the home of a couple of very important collections and ongoing scientific research? There are two collections: Insect and Mite Collection and Plant Pathology and Mycology Herbarium. The NSW DPI Biosecurity Collections are located at the Orange Agricultural Institute on Forest Road, which holds over half a million preserved scientific specimens. Many specimens important to agriculture and biosecurity and for scientific research are preserved in the collections. The collections are the largest of their kind in Australia. This resource is incredibly important to plant industries and the environment and is irreplaceable.

Last week, over 30 people from CWA Branches from across NSW and the ACT came to find out more about Fungi and Imported Red Fire Ants, which are topics being studied by the CWA this year. The information day and tour of the collections was jointly organised by the CWA State Agricultural and Environmental Officer, Jenny Birtles and CWA Central Western Group Officer Helen James along with Liz Davis from the Central Tablelands Local Land Services.

DPI staff, Peter Gillespie and Jordan Bailey spoke passionately about their respective subjects, particularly about the biosecurity risks and actions that landholders can take to

protect their properties.

All participants learnt so much and appreciated the time given by the staff to share information. The information session was followed by a lovely lunch together at the Orange Ex-Services Club. A most worthwhile visit and an amazing day!

Rotary Orange Daybreak delivers gifts to Eugowra Preschool

Rotary Daybreak recently presented Eugowra Preschool with a new workbench and a number of children’s books.

Using funds donated by the Orange Ex-Services Club, Rotary commissioned the Orange Men’s Shed to build the workbench, which was delivered to the grateful Eugowra Preschool Director Raewyn Molloy, by Rotary Daybreak president Charlie Fisher accompanied by Peter Perriman.

Raewyn also discussed with the Rotarians the school’s need for help with shade trees and planter boxes where children can grow vegetables. She is now providing a list of appropriate shade trees for the local environment.

“It’s a great pleasure to be able to assist their recovery from the terrible floods they suffered,” said Charlie Fisher.

Rotary Orange Daybreak will continue to do everything we can to see them return to where they belong.”

Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser

On Saturday, May 4, four local women are coming together to host a Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for the Cancer Council.

Philippa Mitchell from The Fitting Studio, Maureen Uren from Postie Fashions, Debbie Thornberry from Nutrimetics and Lorraine Gould from Norwex have combined to host the event, which will be held at the Girl Guide Hall in Peisley Street, Orange

These women will be showcasing their products and services as well as offering beautiful Mother’s Day

Gifts, make-up and cleaning demonstrations and, of course, a lovely spread for morning tea.

The Biggest Morning Tea is a great Cancer Council initiative to help raise money for cancer research and advocacy. There will be a gold coin donation at entry and the opportunity to make a donation to the Cancer Council.

Doors open at 10am and the event will run until 2pm. Everyone is welcome, so please come along, bring a friend and enjoy a cuppa.

THUMBS DOWN to the driver on the Northern Distributer between Ophir Road and Leeds Parade on Tuesday, April 16 who had two garbage bins unsecured on this trailer. They both blew off! If I had been going just a little bit faster I may not have lived to tell the tale!

THUMBS UP to Dr Ruth Fullers who has recently retired from the Anson Street Medical Centre. I was so sad to hear the news as Ruth was the ultimate professional and an amazing, humorous lady along with it. My family regard Ruth as a friend, as well as a much respected family doctor. Your wit and genuine caring attitude is hard to find nowadays, and you will be sorely missed. All the best with wherever life takes you.

THUMBS UP to MyTech Mate in Peisley street Orange. I received fantastic service. They were very professional and just nice people. Pricing is great too. I can’t recommend them enough.

THUMBS DOWN to the local franchise business that failed to take out the correct amount of tax from my pay leaving me with a large tax bill I’m still paying off.

THUMBS UP and a big thank you to two wonderful young men, who helped a couple of oldies load their boot in IGA Sumner Street car park. They have a barber shop in Orange arcade.

THUMBS UP to mental health nurses and to all nurses in general, you are all doing a great job!

THUMBS UP to Lachie and all the staff at Auto One. He went above and beyond to find a rare battery, sold it at a great price and even carried it to the car. Thank you.

THUMBS UP to Apple City Auto Electrics. Honest and efficient!

THUMBS UP to Zak at Harvey Norman for assisting with my kitchen package and steam mop. You were not only helpful and knowledgeable but also a true gentleman. You are an asset to your company and I will definitely be back.

THUMBS DOWN to businesses that kept trading during the Anzac Day memorial community parade and service. Your disrespect holds no bounds.

THUMBS UP to the lovely lady who paid for my items at Chemist Warehouse on Anzac Day when my tap and pay on my phone wasn’t working, and I didn’t have my card on me. Very much appreciated by a stressed mum, who was just trying to buy panadol and nappy cream for their baby.

THUMBS

A BIG THUMBS DOWN to staff at the Orange Court House who couldn’t manage to have the flags at half mast on Anzac Day, very disappointing.

THUMBS UP to the Orange Police who did have the flag at half mast. As usual, the police men and women are doing their best for our community.

THUMBS UP to Cyms Petcare, they are punctual, very kind and friendly. Took our dog Molly for the duration of the time arranged. A big thankyou to Cindy.

THUMBS UP to Phil Donato for installing an AED outside his office and for organising a training session for people to learn how to use it.

THUMBS UP to Katie and Cameron at Colour City Dentures in Hill Street for providing quality caring service. Parking excellent. Amazing efficient and friendly help!

THUMBS UP to Orange Police for their assistance in providing transport to and from the Service on Anzac Day. It was really very much appreciated. My officer was David, and he could not have been more caring. Thanks again for providing transport for the disabled Veterans to and from the Service to and from the Cenotaph.

THUMBS UPTo all the CWA ladies who provided tea and toast to all the patrons who attended the Dawn Service in Orange on Anzac Day, it brought people together and allowed stories to be told.
