Today on Anzac Day, we pause to remember all those Australians who have served and died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions. More than 100,000 Australians are listed on our national memorial roll of honour, among them more than 200 people who called Orange home. Today we remember them and the many more who returned home but still carried wounds that lingered long past the last shots fired.

My own great-grandfather, Harry Dykes, enlisted in the 7th Light Horse just a few weeks after the call went out for men to join the fight. As the war dragged on, three of his brothers also answered the call and another tried to enlist but was told to stay home for his mother’s sake. Four men stepped up to take his place. At the war’s end, Ernest Dykes lay in an English hospital, having been badly gassed in the final months of the conflict. Harry and his brother William were already back in Australia, a newspaper describing them as having returned home “physical wrecks from the front”. But Harry’s younger brother Cecil Leonard Dykes never came home. A 20-year-old blacksmith from the mid-north coast, Cecil had sailed out of Sydney with the 30th AIF on February 16, 1916. Five months later he was dead and was buried in a field in France.

The war obviously took a toll on Harry, who could not return to working as a woodchopper and drover as he had done prior to the war. And even after years had passed, he would spend time in the Waley Convalescent Home in Camden – a Red Cross facility looking after shell-shocked and invalided soldiers. Harry also never forgot his younger brother whose life was cut short, naming his first-born son Cecil. This is just one family’s story.

Lest we forget.

Orange RSL Sub-Branch appeal for photos, information on our fallen Anzacs

Today, Anzac Day, hundreds of service men and servicewomen, relatives and school children will march along Summer Street to the Cenotaph at Robertson Park.

Above them, as they march, hang banners bearing the images and names of 40 Orange servicemen killed in action. The street banners are an initiative of Orange City Council, in partnership with the City of Orange RSL sub-branch, and over the next few years, ‘The Local Fallen’ campaign will see each of the more than 200 people from Orange who have died during foreign wars recognised in a similar fashion.

But to do so, the City of Orange RSL sub-branch is appealing to the public for information and photographs, anything that might help to fill the gaps in the historical record and better tell their stories.

“There are quite a significant amount of people that we don’t have photos of, especially from World War One and also Korea,” Orange RSL Sub-brach Vice President, Brad Bliss said.

Not only that, but many of the photos they do have are of poor quality, he said, and they would really like to honour the memory of these soldiers the best they can.

“If there are people out there who have relatives who’ve fallen in active service and have photos and other information, we’d like them to be able to approach us and supply that information,” Brad said.

“We’d like to start getting information and photos in well in advance so that we’ve got a better selection for next year that we can put to Council because they’re the ones who decide whose name and everything is done.”

Brad has recently begun the daunting task of trying to compile a more complete record of all of the men and women from Orange who’ve served in the armed forces for the Orange RSL museum. He said they would also

welcome any input from the public for that project.

“We’ve been obtaining all the original World War One service records, finding newspaper articles and anything else that’s out there on everyone from World War One, not just the fallen,” he said.

“The sub-branch, until now, haven’t kept that information at all. Historically, this wasn’t done for whatever reason… I’ve now got a collection started and we’ve got a research laptop at the museum so that we can have people come in and do research on their relatives.”

If you have any photos or information on local servicemen or servicewomen, you can get in touch with Brad Bliss at the City of Orange RSL Sub Branch, Memorial Hall, 245 Anson St, Orange. Office hours are 9am-12pm on Tuesday and Friday.

It’s showtime!

The 152nd Orange Show kicks off this Saturday, April 27, with all your show favourites, traditional competitions, and plenty of entertainment for the whole family.

From Beaut Utes to the Young Farmers Challenge, to live music, Orange Show President Peter Naylor said there’s something for everyone at this year’s show.

“We have a wonderful show planned this year that will have something to please everyone. Some new attractions are Troppo Bob’s Magic Show, The Smart Farmer Milking Show and the reptile and dinosaur display. Of course, many traditional displays will be present — the Circus McCabe, lawn mower races and wood chopping,” Mr Naylor said.

“The Orange Show plays host to the best rides and amusements, cattle, sheep, goats, poultry and one of the best equestrian sections in the Central West running on Sunday, April 28.

It is the first year for some time that the Orange Show will have a second day of events, with the horse schedule being concluded as a separate program on Sunday, April 28.

Mr Naylor said that, all going well, the 153rd Orange Show in 2025 will be an even bigger two-day affair!

“The Show Society hopes that the community will get behind the show which, whilst in 2024 will remain a one-day main event, is building to return to a two-day program in 2025,” he said.

The 152nd Orange Show gets underway from 9am Saturday, April 27, at the Orange Showground and concludes that evening following the 7.30pm family fireworks display.

The grand parade and official opening will take place at 2pm.

Tickets are available online at 123tix.com.au. Children under six are free.

Turners Furniture One Orange assistant store manager and La-Z-Boy and Stressless specialist Rachel Dunn invites you to celebrate 60 years of Furniture One.

Furniture One celebrates 60 years

Australian independent furniture cooperative Furniture One turns 60 in 2024, and Turners Furniture One Orange are holding massive monthly sales to celebrate.

“It’s a momentous occasion,” Turners Furniture One Orange store manager Krystle Cassidy said.

“And we want to celebrate it within our seven stores across the Central West. We are a fiercely independent

and family-owned business, Steve Turner’s had his store for over 30 years and took it over from his Dad. So that’s why we want to celebrate it and pass on the sales and a little excitement to the community as well.”

Until the end of April, Turners Furniture One Orange are offering huge discounts on big brand items like 25 per cent off A.H. Beard mattresses, 30 per cent off selected BedMaster Bedding and 20 per cent off selected La-Z-Boy products. But Krystle said the celebrations will continue throughout the year with more sales to come.

The best thing people can do is come in and see what sales are on for that month,” she said.

“Just come in and see us. We’ve got a friendly crew here and there are big things happening further down the track. I can’t wait to share it all when it all comes out!

Turners Furniture One Orange is located at 70 Endsleigh Avenue, Orange.

Dirty Janes opens for business on Friday

There has been plenty of activity behind the green doors of Dirty Janes Orange with more than 65 stallholders putting the final touches on their retail spaces before the opening of the new indoor vintage market this Friday, April 26.

Orange is the third Dirty Janes location opened by founder Jane Crowley, who originally launched her curated multi-stall market in Bowral 15 years ago.

“We tend to do a fairly quiet opening,” said Jane amid the hustle and bustle of store preparation on Tuesday.

“We are not going to throw a big party. We are not going to invite VIPs or

anything we just want to open the doors and let the customers come in looking for records or furniture or vintage clothing or whatever it might be and we just help them all to feel really welcome when they come in our doors.”

Along with the 65-plus individual sellers (with more to come once the upstairs renovations are complete) Dirty Janes features its own cafe, Salters, with a menu of home-cooked food, generous sandwiches, muffins and soup of the day. Dirty Janes Orange will open on Friday, April 26. Located at 98 Byng Street, the market will be open seven days a week, from 10–5pm.

Gee calls for world’s largest Chiko Roll to be brought to Bathurst N ds to make the journey home

Federal Member for Calare

Andrew Gee has once again weighed into the disputed origin claims surrounding the iconic Chiko Roll, calling for an artist’s giant replica of the Australian takeaway staple to be brought “home” to Bathrust.

For the launch of his latest exhibition, Wagga Wagga artist Chris Roe has created what he claims to be the world’s largest Chiko Roll. Standing six feet high and wrapped in the immediately recognisable branded packaging, the giant inflatable Chiko Roll artwork has been garnering plenty of attention on the streets of Wagga Wagga which, like Bendigo and Bathurst, stakes its claim as being the “Home of the Chiko Roll”.

Created by Frank McEncroe, a boilermaker from Bendigo, Victoria, the Chiko Roll made its first public appearance at the Wagga Wagga Agriculture Show in 1951. But for the last 30 years, the Chiko has been manufactured in Bathurst.

In 2016, Andrew Gee used his first speech in the federal parliament to claim the Chiko Roll for Bathurst. The speech sparked passionate counterclaims from Riverina MP Michael McCormack for the Wagga origin

story, as well as Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters, who spoke disparagingly of the “terrible myths” being put forward about the origins of the Chiko Roll.

“Like all great controversies of our time, there is no end in sight for this one,” Mr Gee told Orange City Life this week, unwavering in his opinion that it is his electorate that can claim the Chiko Roll.

“I think it’s generally accepted everywhere outside of Wagga and Bendigo that the home of the Chiko Roll is in Bathurst. And indeed, if you go to the Simplot Factory in Bathurst, there is a sign there which welcomes everybody to the factory and declares Bathurst ‘the home of the Chiko Roll’.”

giant Chiko Roll really needs to make the journey home,” Mr Gee said.

Given that’s the case, Mr Gee said he feels it would only be fitting for the Wagga artist’s “masterpiece” to be permanently installed in Bathurst, where it belongs.

“I admire Chris’ artistry. I admire his commitment to this Australian icon — and, in particular, this Bathurst icon — but the

“I think that the giant Chiko Roll really needs to make the pilgrimage to Bathurst and be based in Bathurst permanently. I think that would be a very fitting end to the journey of this artistic masterpiece.”

Bathurst. I lived there for several years while getting my degree at CSU,” Chris said. “So I guess it really comes down to who wants it more.”

Why all the ‘F ’ words?

CWA Orange Branch members in Cook Park on Australia Day this year promoting koala conservation.

L-R: Susanne Gri th, Claire Wright, Helen Karrasch, Helen James, and Deborah Marr (with a koala cake made by Helen Karrasch).

It’s been 100 years that the Country Women’s Association (CWA) has been operating in Orange. That’s 100 years of fundraising, friendship, and focus on community issues… That’s a lot of ‘F’ words.

Orange’s CWA members want the community to see what this group of dedicated women get up to, beyond tea and scones. That’s why at the Orange Show this Saturday, April 27, you may notice a lot of ‘F’ words surrounding the CWA stand, all representative of the diverse range of issues and activities of the CWA today

“In the first instance, the CWA was created for improving maternity services in NSW,” President of the CWA Orange Branch Deborah Marr explained. “They wanted to address the issue of maternal mortality… and advocate for women in general.”

But over the last century, the CWA has campaigned for numerous issues that affect regional women and families, with a particular focus on isolation.

“There was a great concern about women being so isolated… it’s hard to think these days what it’s like to not have a car to travel places,” Deborah said.

“The CWA became a social company, friendship, and a source of influence, and lobbying the government for

services for women. That advocacy is still our major function.”

Orange’s CWA hopes that by asking ‘Why the F words?’ at this year’s show, that they can spread awareness and understanding to the community about their initiatives.

Some of the ’F‘ words include:

Fire Ants The CWA has introduced a ‘Foe’ in order to raise awareness of a different week or pest every year. For 2024, the foe is Red Imported Fire Ants.

Fauna: Koalas The CWA has collaborated with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water on koala conservation. Members are encouraging the public to look out for koalas, and to report them to the state government using the iSpy app.

Fungi “We’ve just been up to the Orange Ag Institute and had a briefing about fungi,” Deborah said.

This is part of the CWA’s study of choice.

France “Every year we have a country of study,” Deborah explained.

Here, members indulge in the chosen country’s food and learn more about their culture.

You will find the Orange CWA in the Agricultural Pavilion at the Orange Show, on Saturday, April 27.

Orange CWA meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month from 5.30pm in the Robertson Park CWA Hall. The public are welcome to come along to meetings, with no membership required.

HISTORY TALKING with HELEN MCANULTY

LANGUAGE

“Ducks on the pond” was the cry that went up in the old days if a woman dared to set foot in the shearing shed.

One young fellow was so taken aback by the sight of a female entering such a male-dominated area, that he struggled for the right words, and finally shouted the warning: “Swans on the lake!”

That story set the tone for the Oral History Group when we looked at the words and phrases our parents used which are now mostly forgotten.

Language doesn’t stand still and, as civilisations grow and expand, so does the language we speak.

Australia’s language is rich in slang that reflects experiences from the country’s history by borrowing from the Aboriginal language, through convict sources, gold rushes and bush ranging to the World Wars.

We also rather enjoy abbreviating and altering word endings, such as barbie, arvo, cossie and blowie to name a few.

We like to call a tall man “Shortie” and a redhead “Blue”.

From the wars came words like cobber, digger, dinkum, dag, galah and drongo.

When I was a small child I used to watch, with excited anticipation, a neighbour who said: “Strike me pink!”! But, to my disappointment, he never did change colour at all.

Because many in our group grew up in rural areas, it seems only natural that the slang they remembered was closely linked to the bush.

Our wildlife figured largely.

“Stone the crows”, “Starve the lizards”, and “Flatten the magpies” were all expressions of amazement.

“A few roos short of a paddock” was a rather unkind way of describing a slow person.

Someone came up with “flat out like a lizard drinking” which, we decided, meant working very hard because we were emulating the rapid flicking of the lizard’s tongue.

“I’ve knocked around the backcountry a good deal,” said Tim, “and have seen some of it pretty dry. There were lots of ways to describe it,” he went on, and gave us a sample which I have left somewhat to the readers’ imagination.

“As dry as a dead dingo’s…”

John had a more refined version: “So dry that even the bandicoots take a cut-lunch”.

“There are expressions that I have never heard before,” said John C. who came to Australia from England in the 1960s. “Australia has developed its own vernacular.”

“Your blood is worth bottling” and “You’ve got Buckley’s” are two which were new to him.

There is some disagreement about where Buckley’s chance came from.

Some think it refers to the convict who escaped and lived for years with the Aborigines before being captured, and others that it is a reference to Buckley’s Department store in Melbourne: “If you can’t find it at Buckley’s you won’t find it anywhere!”

Russel as usual had a fund of stories.

“My father used to say about someone who valued himself highly: “If I could buy him at my price and sell him at his, I’d make a fortune!”

“Game as Ned Kelly” would not be said by anyone who was not Australian and “Fair dinkum” is thought to have originated on the gold fields when the Chinese workers used “ding kum” to confirm an honest deal (it literally means authentic, genuine).

Glenna told us about her father who often said when asked where he was going: “I’m off to see a man about a dog,” and her sisters would get very excited about the dog he was going to bring home!

Stuart’s mother was a little concerned about how he was doing at school and when she asked his teacher about his progress, he said: “Don’t worry, he’ll be there when the whips start cracking!” Much of our slang was euphemistic, as Glenna pointed out. It was frowned upon to use any language with a biblical

connection and so we said: “Go to blazes” when today we would quite cheerfully tell them to “Go to hell.”

Today when swear words are explicit and leave nothing to the imagination, the expletives of the past seem quaint.

Gee, crikey, gosh, sugar and cobblers appear old-fashioned, and indeed laughable.

There were also wonderful sayings which applied to the city like, “Shoot through like a Bondi Tram,” or a scornful, “He comes from beyond the black stump.”

Whether they came from the city or the bush, our turn of speech has an originality which belies the short period of our nationhood and we salute it.

A member of our group wrote the following story which shows how colourful our language can be.

“Strike me lucky, you are very late, so shake a leg and get a wiggle on. It’s so windy today that it would blow a dog off its chain and any tick of the clock it will be raining cats and dogs. Then it will be on for young and old and the blowies will have to hide. He is not sure if he’s Arthur or Martha and is as nutty as a fruitcake, so do stop arguing the toss or your chooks will turn into emus and knock your dunny down.”

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S SENIORS FUNDING CUT A DISGRACE

We’ve had some shocking infrastructure funding cuts to our region, and the Federal Government is now outrageously targeting our seniors with yet another savage cut.

Orange City Council is currently participating in a wonderful program called ‘Village Hubs.’ The initiative is lead by a Project Leader who runs activities to help local seniors improve their physical, social, and mental wellbeing. Since it was established, the Village Hub in Orange has engaged more than 360 seniors. The program has empowered members to thrive by participating in exercise activities, developing IT skills, or simply getting together for social events – to name just a few. It brings our seniors together and connects them.

The Village Hub program has been funded by the Federal Government as part of the Seniors Connected Grants program.

Recently, I enjoyed attending the Raise the Wings fundraiser for the fantastic notfor-profit, Little Wings.

The dedicated team at Little Wings help seriously ill kids from regional Australia by providing free flights and ground transport to major hospitals — so they can receive the vital medical treatment they need.

It was great to have a chat with the wonderful team members and volunteers who make such a positive

Tragically, Orange City Council has been advised that this funding will cease at the end of June.

The Village Hub Program and its activities in Orange have been a great success, and the initiative has been strongly supported by seniors in our area.

I have contacted the Minister for Social Services, Amanda Rishworth, and requested an immediate reinstatement of this funding, and an urgent meeting with her about it.

Unfortunately, it’s been nothing but radio silence from the Minister and this government on this shameful funding cut.

Worthwhile programs like the Seniors Village Hub in Orange need to be retained. This funding cut is nothing short of disgraceful.

With the budget fast approaching, I urge the Federal Government to reconsider this callous decision which will have a terrible impact on the lives of many of our local seniors.

My message to the Federal Government is clear: reverse this unnecessary and unjustified cut on the double.

difference in the lives of kids battling the worst, and hear many inspiring stories from families who have been supported by Little Wings.

Excitingly, the dinner also celebrated the launch of the 2024 Tractor Trek! The group are now preparing for their upcoming Tractor Trek in September — trekking 270kms in 3-days! If you'd like to get involved, visit https://www. cwctractortrek.com.au/

Congratulations on a terrific evening, Little Wings, and thank you for all that you do for our regional communities!

Orange residents love their sport, so it’s fantastic that locals can now bend it like Beckham, shoot some hoops, practice their batting and bowling, or pick up a game of pickleball at this new and improved sports court at Moulder Park!

It’s great that the Australian Government chipped in more than $100,000 to transform the

former netball courts into a topnotch sports facility for the entire community to enjoy.

The terrific improvements to the site will encourage people of all ages to get active, boosting their physical health, wellbeing, and connection to their community.

The project is a 30-metre by 17-metre multipurpose court that will include the linemarking for recreational games of basketball, futsal, cricket and other activities, surrounded by a tall wire-mesh fence.

The new court has been fittingly named in honour of a legend of the local sporting community, Bob Russell. The late Mr Russell operated a sporting goods store in Summer Street for many years and supported many local sporting clubs. His wonderful family were in attendance to help with the ribbon cutting!

The project had been supported with a $105,397 Federal Government grant through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.

A STEP towards freedom

“I wrote the book as a voice for all the people that have been silenced and can’t speak up for themselves,” local author Dorothy West said of her recently published novel, A Step Towards Freedom.

The result of more than five years of research, A Step Towards Freedom is a fictional, but true-to-life account of one woman’s journey to healing and the long-lasting impact of child sexual abuse.

While it is not a subject matter that most people are comfortable talking about, let alone writing a book about, Dorothy said she felt compelled to bring to light the struggle that she knew so many people out there face each day.

“I used to fit bras in a ladies’ store and around the community for a few decades and because it’s such an intimate thing to do, they used to open up and tell me things about their past, including dark secrets, and a lot of them had to do with child sexual abuse,” Dorothy said.

Watching as people like Rolf Harris and other prominent figures were revealed as abusers, Dorothy said it was with disbelief that she heard so many people doubting the victims’ accounts.

“There was a barrage of people commenting about it saying, Why are they doing it? They must be after money?’ or ‘Why didn’t they speak to another adult or someone?’

“The comments used to make me cringe after seeing my clients still struggling in their 30s 40s, 60s and 80s, et cetera… in the end, I decided to write a book depicting

how child abuse affects an entire lifetime and that people can’t just ‘get over it’,” she continued.

“This book is their voice… and shows that the effects of child abuse don’t just go away when they leave home or an abusive situation.”

Dorothy said she hoped the book might be of some comfort to people and help them as they heal from their own past trauma.

Autumn Shrubs

12ft) has delightful red, purple, and green foliage which develops into striking red and orange during autumn. The pastel pink panicles of flowers develop in spring, remaining for much of summer and give the plant its common name as they look like sweet puffs of smoke floating around the plant. It is frost- and drought-hardy and will tolerate most soils and windy conditions. It is relatively slow growing, and its roots are not considered invasive. It makes a great specimen plant and informal hedge.

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis mollis, family: Hamamelidaceae).

autumn also provides a wonderful show, turning from green to brilliant red, orange and yellows. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun although try to protect from harsh western sun. It will tolerate light frosts and is moderately drought hardy once established. After flowering, it can be pruned to encourage a denser habit. It makes a great informal hedge or a standalone specimen plant and is also a good cut flower.

Previously, I wrote about trees which are renowned for their beautiful autumn colour. This week I continue the theme and give some suggestions for shrubs that are also spectacular in autumn. It really is such a lovely time to be in the garden. I encourage you to get out and about.

Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergia, family: Berberidaceae). This delightful shrub, with as many as 500 species, is native to temperate regions around the world, most particularly South America and Asia. It has a dense round shape growing to around five feet in height and width. It is

deciduous, although there are evergreen varieties. Leaves are generally a deep crimson throughout much of the year, turning a brilliant red and orange in autumn. It is fully frost-hardy and will tolerate most soils but prefers a welldrained loam and full sun which promotes good colour. It can be pruned to shape after flowering in summer. Small birds love this plant as its spiny stems provide protection from predators. If you can, pop a bird bath near it and watch the birds delight in their perfect home.

Smoke Bush (Cotinus coggygria, family: Anacardiaceae).

Native to the Himalayas and northern China. This beautiful deciduous large shrub (sometimes a small tree up to 10-

Native to central China this delightful open and upright shrub is best known for its scented strap-like yellow flowers which appear on bare wood during winter and early spring, but it also offers a lovely yellow autumn colour. If happy it can grow to a small tree to around 10ft. It is fully frost-hardy and can tolerate drought once established and if kept watered. It prefers an open, sunny position with free-draining soil. It can be used as an informal hedge or a stand-alone specimen. If you have a border garden, consider planting a row at the back of the bed.

May Bush, Spirea (Spiraea cantoniensis, family: Rosaceae).

There are over 80 species of this popular shrub native to Japan, Korea, and China. The plant you are most likely to see around Orange is S. cantoniensis. It is one of my favourite shrubs, having a loose round shape which can grow to 5-7ft in the right spot. Its mass of small clusters of honey-scented white flowers in spring are quite the showstopper but its foliage in

Oak Leaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia, family: Hydrangeaceae). Not as common in our gardens as Hydrangea macrophylla, you will still spot H. quercifolia in older, established gardens. It is becoming more popular as the large oblong or pyramid-shaped flowers provide a great display. It prefers full sun to semi-shade and a moist, freedraining soil. They are frost tolerant and moderately drought tolerant but need regular watering during our hotter months. A stunning display of the foliage is still provided during autumn when it becomes a mass of bronze and gold. It is deciduous, so sometimes the leaves will drop but this has not been my experience in Orange.

AUTUMN FLOWERS

Flowers that are at their best in autumn include carnations (or pinks), chrysanthemum, snapdragons, freesias, crowea species, cyclamen, dahlias, hebes and proteas amongst others. A light prune and feed of your roses in late summer may well provide an autumn flush. Take a drive past May Farm Flowers in Nashdale to see acres of dahlias and hydrangea paniculata currently flowering in profusion.

Crib break. Eric asked, “Bill, what does the word ‘crucifixion’ mean?”

“That’s the way Jesus died,” said Bill. “It just means killing someone by nailing them on a cross.”

“I knew that!” said Eric. “When Jesus died like that, everyone must have thought he was weak and humiliated and helpless, and a few other things like defeated and betrayed.”

“And deserted,” added Bill. “His followers had shot through, that’s for sure.”

“Yeah,” said Eric. “But when he was about to die, he yelled, ‘It is finished!’ I could understand it if he’d said ‘I am finished!’ or something like that, because he’d failed. What did he mean ‘It is finished!’, Bill?”

“It’s all to do with what Jesus came to do,” replied Bill. “As God’s son, his whole purpose was to die, to pay the penalty for the whole human race, for our attitude of rebelling against God, or just ignoring him – what The Bible calls sin. On the cross that penalty was paid in full. That’s what was finished.”

“So when he rose… ?”

“That was God saying ‘Yes’ to all Jesus had done. Sin is paid for. We can be forgiven. God’s love for us has won. Satan has lost.”

bid

to

host

TRIPLE J’S ONE NIGHT STAND FESTIVAL

It has been five years since Triple J held its One Night Stand regional music festival and Orange City Council wants our city to be the first to host the event after its COVID-induced hiatus.

Council is calling for the Orange community to rally behind its bid to bring some of Australia’s hottest music acts and rising stars to the city by nominating Orange to host the iconic event.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling encouraged everyone to cast their

vote for Orange to host the historymaking return of one of the country’s most iconic music festivals.

“Who would have thought that when South Australia’s Lucindale hosted the One Night Stand back in 2019 that it would be five years before this unique event was held again,” Cr Hamling said.

“Orange is the perfect location for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’m very excited to lead the push to bring the party to our hometown this year.”

Employment and Economic Development Policy Committee Chair

Tony Mileto said the event would provide a huge economic boost for Orange and the surrounding region.

“Orange is fast emerging as the events capital of inland NSW and One Night Stand is the perfect event to raise this profile even further. It will attract thousands of people from across the state to enjoy everything our city has

to offer,” Cr Mileto said.

Triple J encourages people to nominate their town by providing unique and interesting facts about their location and why hosting the One Night Stand would make a difference to their community.

To fill out the nomination form and to find a ‘cheat sheet’ Orange City Council has set up to make filling out the form as easy as possible, visit the website at www.orange.nsw.gov.au.

SHATTERING THE SILENCE

Local singersongwriter Megan Woods’ upcoming single Shattering the Silence is a powerful anthem about the importance of standing up for what is right in the world.

Co-written with local leadership coach, speaker and author Jessica Hickman, Shattering the Silence is a call to action, says Megan, urging those who hear it to speak up, stand tall, and advocate for change.

Jessica, who is one of this year’s participants in the annual Cancer Council fundraiser ‘Stars of Orange’, approached Megan about writing an original song for her to dance to at the gala night on May 4. Jessica’s work is dedicated to raising awareness of bullying and harassment in the workplace and inspiring others to be ‘upstanders’, to speak up against abuse and toxic behaviour.

“Jessica travels around Australia and she goes into businesses and talks about workplace bullying and harassment, and how to be a great up-stander,” Megan said. “She said ‘I just really want my dance to really represent what I do in my day-today, while still obviously raising money for Cancer Council’.”

The idea resonated strongly with Megan, who had herself escaped a toxic and violent relationship many years ago in New Zealand.

“I jumped at the chance! Especially being that I am a survivor of DV, you know, just another form of bullying and harassment,” she says. “DV is something that I am very passionate about bringing to an end… I feel this song can speak to a lot of issues.”

While there is much in Shattering the Silence that’s deeply personal,

Megan believes it is a song with a message for everyone.

“I feel like people can take away their own feelings and their own emotions from the song,” Megan explained. “It’s very moving and powerful, and it’s got a very strong message about being a good upstander and bringing justice.

“Even just the title of the song is very powerful: Shattering the Silence… Whether that be to stand up against domestic violence, or bullying and harassment or whatever it might be. It’s become this really special song.”

Born and raised in New Zealand, Megan first picked up a guitar when she was just eight years old, but for many years she says her confidence was taken from her.

“Eleven years ago I had left a marriage in New Zealand, and it was quite heavy on the DV,” Megan explained. “My confidence had been knocked for quite a number of years, as to picking up a guitar and being good enough, because I had been pushed down a lot.”

It took leaving her former marriage and moving to Australia, where she’s built a new life and family, but Megan says she is now finally fulfilling the dreams of her younger self who reached for that guitar.

Releasing her debut single Shirt on the Floor in May 2022, Megan swiftly garnered attention, clinching two prestigious awards at the Dotted Eight Music Awards.

For her second single I Just Want To Be released in 2023, Megan embraced a rock-infused style inspired by her experience in a Melissa Etheridge tribute show.

Her third original release Shattering the Silence comes out May 3, and will be available on all music platforms.

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

with EMILY THOMPSON

Wardrobe malfunctions

I’ve lost a lot of weight recently. And sure there’s the feeling good and the better health, and blah, blah, blah… But I’m here to tell you the real benefit to losing weight is the clothes. Walking into a shop and buying clothes that are seasonally appropriate, stylish, a ordable and in a colour other than black is simply amazing! So recently, I splurged. I bought jeans that weren’t leggings or ¾ length, and cardigans with full-length sleeves and covered shoulders. If you’ve never been plus-size this will sound crazy to you, but most of the jumpers available for purchase in a size 26 stop halfway down your forearm or have “cold shoulders” where they literally cut out a rectangle of fabric to ensure you are always bitterly cold. Perfect for winter in Orange, obviously.

TO FRONT. Miss Nine and Miss 15 have never laughed so hard in their lives, and I can never again return to the Summer Centre IGA.

It was the most embarrassed I’d ever been… until my ultrasound the next day. As all mothers will know, ultrasounds leave you feeling exposed and awkward, the gel is cold and you get absolutely saturated with it, and at the end the lovely technician will hand you a bunch of tissues and tell you to “clean yourself up” which will be deeply reminiscent of how you got into your predicament in the first place.

...This series of unfortunate events is how I ended up spending the lowest point of my week severely traumatising a radiographer for over an hour...

But my downfall happened with the beautiful pink dress I bought. It’s gorgeous. Colourful, fitted at the waist and it has pockets. I look good in it, and I feel good in it. A little too good it turns out. I put it on, grabbed a co ee, and strutted my stu confidently through IGA to pick up milk and toilet paper. And I noticed people looking. What a great confidence boost! Literally, every second person looked once and then glanced back a second time. I still maintain that appearances are not a determination of a person’s character, but I’ve worked hard and I enjoyed the attention, walking on air the whole time.

Until I got home and tried to fish my keys out of my pocket and realised MY DRESS WAS ON BACK

But my days of having babies are over and this ultrasound was to check blood flow in my legs, following a diagnosis of a clotting disorder. This is where I messed up. I have to admit I thought “Legs! Great! No need to worry about exposure of any kind” without putting any kind of thought into what a femoral artery is. So I said to myself, “I’ll just leave work for a few hours in the afternoon, no prep necessary.”

As all women will know “period undies” are a thing, and I’m incredibly unapologetic about this. However, they are generally not shown to anyone other than your partner and the particularly shameful pair I had on at that moment had a fairly large rip in them. This series of unfortunate events is how I ended up spending the lowest point of my week severely traumatising a radiographer for over an hour. Look, mistakes were made, lessons were learned and now I have “medical appointment underwear” to protect the eyes of hospital sta . Sorry, bro.

LAST CALLS AT CARGO EXCHANGE

It was the end of an era when the Cargo manual telephone exchange closed in October 1985. This week’s photo shows Patricia Mathers, who ran the exchange, along with the Post O ce, with her husband Greg. The old battery-operated system was due to be converted to automatic, along with Euchareena, Carcoar, Lyndhurst and Mandurama. Patricia said she would miss the exchange’s community hub, which operated 24 hours a day.

THErobus NOTES

with Keith Rawsthorne

April was a very happy gathering with several birthdays to celebrate, especially that of retiring president, Chuck who scored his OBE (Over Bloody Eighty) on the day. We had a tasty cake for morning tea with so many candles that it took two puffs to extinguish them. Other birthday boys were Bruce Chapman, Fred Booking, Gordon Barkey, and David Cuming. Happy birthday all!

President Chuck Frame presented the Chain of Office to incoming President David Cuming who will be our leader for the next year. Chuck thanked all members for their friendship and support, and each Committee member for their input to their allotted tasks.

Visitor, Alan Taylor, an Orange man returning, was welcomed; come again and enjoy the FUN and FRIENDSHIP of Probus.

Treasurer, David reported that with the payment of annual dues we have recouped the loss of last month with some dues outstanding – just $55, tap and go.

Tours: To begin the year, John has planned a quick and easy trip by XPT to Wellington for lunch at the Services Club. The concessional fare is $2.50 which must be bought in the week prior to travelling. We plan to get all of us in one carriage to help the FUN, FELLOWSHIP and FRIENDSHIP of Probus. Be at Orange station at 11.40am on Wednesday, May 8. Wives and friends are welcome, so make a day of it.

Guest Speaker, Camilla Davidson of Rickard Whitely gave an in-depth talk on Wills, Probate and Power of Attorney. Camilla has made this a special interest in her Practice and has a Master’s Degree on the subject.

A properly drawn Will is most important; to die without a Will is Intestate and a costly lot of bother. A will must be signed by a person in sound mind, and witnessed by two signatures, and establishes Power of Attorney, Guardianship of children and dispersal of the Estate. Wills must be updated (say 5 yearly) as circumstances change, e.g. marriage, divorce or death which can invalidate a Will.

People should discuss their Will with family and beneficiaries to save discord or costly contests, and Superannuation and tax law like CGT must be considered.

Speaker for May is Jessica Stephens of the Dementia Support Group, and in June we will have a speaker from Commonwealth Bank to discuss money in general and how the Budget affects retirees in particular.

Probus was begun to promote friendship, interest and relaxation for retired business and professional men and women without the stress of fundraising. Orange Men’s Probus meets first Wednesday each month, 10 am at Orange Services Memorial Club. You are welcome to come and enjoy the FELLOWSHIP, FRIENDSHIP and FUN of Probus. For enquiries contact Phil on 0411 117 390.

BLAYNEY ANGLICAN CHURCH BOOK FAIR

Titles of every description, a famous author, a barbecue, homemade cakes and preserves, plants, old LPs, jigsaw puzzles, CDs, DVDs, and a trading table — the annual Blayney Anglican Church Book Fair, is the one big event of the year, for serious readers throughout the Shire and the wider district.

Running for the next two Fridays and Saturdays, (April 26–27 and May 3–4), this autumn it features about 11,000 original works, hundreds of DVDs and CDs, and a whole bunch of historic LPs. There’s also home-made cakes, home-grown plants, jams and biscuits, and a barbecue this weekend of the sale

The Blayney Anglican Church Book Fair runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day in the Church Hall on Adelaide Street, Blayney.

ANZAC BISCUITS

The belief is that these biscuits were sent by women to serving soldiers as they could withstand the long sea journeys. At that time, they probably wouldn’t have used butter or golden syrup and would have added a bit of salt so they would have been very crunchy biscuits indeed. Now they are made each year to commemorate our proud Anzacs, traditionally on Anzac Day. They are utterly delicious and are always a hit.

You will need:

• 1 ¼ cups sifted, plain flour

• 1 cup traditional rolled oats

• ¾ cup of desiccated coconut

• 150g butter

• ½ cup sugar

• ½ tsp bicarb soda

• 2 tbs golden syrup

• 1-2 tbs hot water

Preheat your oven to fan-forced 160-170C. Grease a couple of baking trays and line with baking paper.

Put the flour, oats, sugar, and desiccated coconut in a large mixing bowl and stir until well combined.

Into a saucepan put the golden syrup and butter and stir over a low heat until the butter has melted. Separately mix the bicarb with the hot water and then add to the syrup mixture. Now the fun bit. Watch it bubble and fizz. It’s like being in a chemistry lesson! Stir briefly and remove from the heat. Pour into the dry ingredients and mix until fully combined. The consistency should be moist but hold together well.

Roll the mixture into balls about 2-3cm, flatten slightly and place on baking trays spacing them well as they will spread.

Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

THUMBS UP to Kayla on the desk at Colour City Medical Practice. I seem to speak to her most of the times I call and she’s very knowledgeable and always wonderfully helpful, she even lightens the mood!

THUMBS UP and a sincere thanks to the people at Tilstons, from Adrian all the way down the line. Special mention to the team who installed my new aircon in midDecember when it was so hot, you were the best! Also, thanks to Tim. Your knowledge and experience always inspire confidence. Not forgetting the support staff who look after administration, you make every contact a pleasure.

THUMBS DOWN to the grumpy old man at the gym class on Tuesday night who yelled at a female member for something she didn’t even do and then waited for her outside in the dark to further interrogate. Your behaviour was disgusting!

THUMBS UP and thank you to our federal member, Mr Gee and our state member, Mr Donato and their teams for my beautiful 50th birthday cards and well wishes. Your kind thoughts are very much appreciated.

A BIG THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council and the caretakers of the Orange Showground for allowing a private function to take place where the volume of music and noise was extreme to say the least! There was clearly no consideration or respect for neighbouring residents.

THUMBS UP to the friendly, young, dark curly-haired man who works at KFC. Exceptional service!

THUMBS UP to Orange City Council! They may have set a record for patches per metre of road as after the last visit of the patching crew we now have 34 shiny black patches in the 25-metre section I can count from my veranda and there is much more further on.

THUMBS DOWN to the parents and guardians who continue to ignore the pedestrian lights outside Orange Post Office. You should be setting a positive example to your young children. Unfortunately, I know who will be blamed in the future when one of these kids is injured or worse. Please take some responsibility for your actions and set positive lessons for your loved ones.

THUMBS UP to Claire at Peisley Street

IGA for her excellent service and always a great chat. It makes shopping excellent, thank you!

A HUGE THUMBS UP to Weekes

Mechanical on William Street. They always go above and beyond. A big thank you from a teary lady on her bike!!

THUMBS UP for Tilstons Electrical and also Orange Glass Service for their professional approaches in providing expert service and attention to detail. I thoroughly recommend their work.

THUMBS UP for Peter and Drew of Weilys Betta Home Living. During the past week I visited Betta to discuss a problem I was having with an out of warranty microwave and Peter most attentively listened to my story and then referred the issue to Drew Weily. I was treated with the utmost courtesy and received a most unexpected and very welcomed outcome. Thank you Drew, Peter and of course Betta. What a truly wonderful Orange business.

THUMBS UP to the ‘Life’ contributor’s Thumbs Down concerning the Woolworths Anson St pedestrian crossing. A dangerous crossing. Traffic backed up 2 1/2 blocks to Kite and Hill Sts roundabout during busy shopping periods. Will only get worse with an ever increasing Orange population. Common sense says that pedestrian/traffic lights are needed there. A la Summer St Post Office. Wake up Orange City Council.

THUMBS DOWN To OCC for allowing a commercial night market and fair just one week prior to Orange Show. Families will have spent their money leaving nothing to visit the show. And to all other groups who organize events without a thought of the show date which has been set for years.

THUMBS DOWN to the folk that are supposed to be looking after the magnificent indigenous heritage presentation atop of mount canobolas. I had some guests from new zealand last week up there showing how proud we were of the presentation. All quickly soured by the overgrown garden beds and lack of care required to maintain such an important historical site...Shame!

THUMBS DOWN to last weeks thumbs down re crossing outside Woolworths, Anson St. You are correct there is no law to form groups at crossing. It’s a common COURTESY reminder so we don’t keep straggling over. I know I try to consider the traffic and its not too hard to do. And I appreciate it as a driver as well. I think there are a lot of thoughtless pedestrians. Maybe we should have lights there – there is a small amount of left turning traffic only into Anson St.

THUMBS DOWN to the weekly cartoon that I never get or find funny.
