Today (Thursday, June 22) is the winter solstice, the day our end of the globe is tilted furthest from the warming light of the sun. It’s a day that has held deep significance for many different cultures, all across the world. People have marked this occasion in many different ways, and there are monuments like Stonehenge in England that are built in careful alignment with the solstice sun. But did you know that for the last few years, there’s been a small group of locals who’ve been carrying on their own winter solstice tradition?

Every June, they’ve ventured out on the shortest day of the year to take a swim in Gosling Creek and we hear they’ll be out there again today. Anyone brave enough is welcome to join them at 12.15pm for a 12.30pm dip; all you have to do is show up, although they do request that swimwear is worn.

The village of Newbridge is also celebrating the winter solstice this Saturday with the annual festival, featuring vikings, music and a burning wicker man. You can read more on page 4.

Congratulations to the Orange High School Astley Cup squad on their emphatic win over Dubbo last week. Orange City Life photographers caught some of the action which you will find on pages 22–23. Plus we were there at the Orange Ex-Services Club on Friday to capture the Centenary Dinner celebrating 100 years of the Astley Cup. See page 16.

Mitch Luke, one of the marauding vikings ready to invade the village of Newbridge this Saturday for the Winter Solstice Festival.

Newbridge Winter Solstice Festival — A favourite among vikings!

The village of Newbridge is set to come alive this Saturday with the return of the highly anticipated Winter Solstice Festival.

“Newbridge is my favourite!” says Mitch Luke, a founding member of the historical reenactment group, Iron Guard, who’ll be battling it out as vikings on Saturday.

“There’s a number of reenacting groups going, and we all love it — it’s a real highlight to go to.”

Originally, for Mitch the hobby of reenacting seemed a little peculiar, but his opinion quickly changed when he joined his nephew at an event.

“My nephew wanted to do some reenacting, so I went along to make sure he got treated fairly,” says Mitch.

“I always thought it was big boys wanting to run around and play with swords… I quickly realised that it’s a lot more than that — it’s about the history, making your own clothes, learning skills, making things out of steel, wood, leather –- and I found it was a fabulous lifestyle.”

One of the most rewarding parts of Mitch’s reenacting journey has been the opportunity to share it with his family.

“I found it extremely good for family life — you’re bonding around an open fire, rather than the glow of tv, playing video games or something.”

But it’s not just the connection with family, it’s the close-knit relationships you create with everyone else too, Mitch says.

“You form a lot of bonds – it’s an extended family. It made it incredibly difficult during COVID, because we didn’t see each other for about two years, and it was like not seeing a family member.”

For someone who didn’t initially see the charm, Mitch has now been taking part in reenactments for over 20 years and is well-known within the community.

“I tried to retire, but they won’t let me. They’re even sending me to Europe next year for jousting. For a clown, which is what I am, that’s pretty good!”

For those interested in attending, the Newbridge Winter Solstice Festival gets underway from 12pm with Viking battles, dancers, circus performers, live music, artisan markets, hearty winter food and it all culminates with the burning of the wickerman bonfire! And, arguably the best part, all it costs is a small donation at the gate!

“People can look forward to the misbehaviour of reenactors. We generally mill around the audiences, and answer any questions,” adds Mitch.

“And because it’s such an intimate event we get to associate a lot with the audience, whereas when you're standing in an audience of 10,000-plus people you don’t get that chance.”

“ e glorious unity of the Empire”: the Orange

who answered the call to fight Australia’s first foreign war

dawn of a new historical epoch for Australia. This speech was greeted with cheers, repeated calls of “hear, hear” and sustained applause by the Orange crowd.

But not everybody shared the same enthusiasm for a foreign war. Sir Henry Parkes strongly disapproved and believed it to be unconstitutional. The Bulletin magazine was full of ridicule for the Sudan contingent, and in its February 28, 1885, issue appeared a poem titled ‘El Mahdi to the Australian Troops.’

And fair Australia, freest of the free, Is up in arms against the freeman’s fight; And with her mother joined to crush the right -Has left her threatened treasures o’er the sea, Has left her land of liberty and law To flesh her maiden sword in this unholy war.

The scenes on the streets of Sydney were unlike anything that had ever been seen before in the colonies. Thousands had begun congregating in the early hours of the morning and by noon the main thoroughfare leading to Circular Quay was a sea of excited people, cheering with enthusiasm. Handkerchiefs, flags and banners waved from every available window and even rooftops as people scrambled to get a good view of the procession of men along the street below.

For the first time Australians were going to war. And among them were a handful of volunteers from Orange.

It was on a Tuesday afternoon, March

3, 1885, that the 758 men of the NSW Contingent set sail from Sydney for Egypt to join British troops in Sudan. For several years prior, the British-backed Egyptian government had been fighting a local uprising led by the Muslim cleric Muhammad Ahmad, known to his followers as the Mahdi (spiritual leader). Following a disastrous attempt by Egyptian forces to quell the rebellion, General Charles Gordon was sent

to oversee the safe withdrawal of troops from the region. An international celebrity and figure of heroic proportions in Britain, Gen Gordon instead disregarded his orders and sought to defeat the Mahdist forces. But he soon found his army besieged in the city of Khartoum and Gordon was killed, despite orders given by the Mahdi that he should live.

News of Gordon’s death was met with shock all around the Empire. Within a matter of days, Acting NSW Premier William Bede Dalley (who formerly was the parliamentary representative for Carcoar) o ered to send a detachment of troops, which was accepted and greeted with enthusiasm by many in the colony.

This was not only the first time an Australian colonial government had sent troops to fight in a foreign war, but also the first time a self-governing British colony had raised and dispatched such a force.

Speaking at a dinner in Orange, just days after this announcement, Mr Dalley said the people had shown to the world “the glorious unity of the Empire” describing it as the

CLOSE Thursday 27 July 2023

Application packs for new students are available from the Administration office, or from the information evening. We are taking applications for all other years.

The “El Madhi” who penned these lines was none other than Orange’s famous literary son, Andrew Barton Paterson, and this was the first time his verse had been printed in the magazine. It was the following

year that his now-famous nom de plume “The Banjo” appeared in The Bulletin pages. Those who volunteered to go to the Sudan were of varied backgrounds and nationalities although a large number of them had previously served in British forces.

Arriving in the Red Sea port of Suakin in late March, the Australian volunteers were attached to a brigade of British regulars and saw little fighting over the next weeks. The few deaths recorded were due to disease, not gunfire.

By May, the campaign was abandoned and the volunteer contingent returned home, sailing into Sydney Harbour on June 19.

The Orange volunteers were greeted at the railway station by the mayor and alderman and an enthusiastic crowd of about 1500 people. The men were given a public banquet and presented with an illuminated address, one that hangs today in the Orange RSL sub-branch museum in the Memorial Hall in Anson Street.

To mark the anniversary of the return of the Orange volunteers, there will be a small service in the Memorial Hall on Friday, June 23 at 11am.

How to Build Rappo with ‘Di icult’ Kids

While I mainly work with adults, I have also worked with “at risk” kids. These are kids who display behavioural problems, like lashing-out at school, and often (but not always) come from difficult backgrounds. At heart, they’re usually great kids.

As a young fella, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say I was an “at risk” kid myself. I can certainly attest to the fact that it’s difficult to concentrate on school when you don’t have food in your belly, or when you didn’t get much sleep due to the fights in your household.

But even children who aren’t “at risk” can exhibit behaviours that are really difficult to deal with. Some of the ways we can build rapport with challenging kids while still keeping strong boundaries are as follows:

1. Seeing the child as an individual. Kids aren’t a blank canvas for us to paint on: they’re unique individuals with their own interests, and inner worlds just as vivid as our own. Paying attention to individual traits and interests makes children feel seen for the individuals they are.

2. Creating a safe space. Our job isn’t to determine if our kids’ problems are big enough to matter, our job is to listen without judgement and provide a safe space for the child to share how they’re feeling. They can be experiencing challenges that to us seem completely insignificant from our perspective, but it’s important to remember that they are real to them. Raging hormones and a prefrontal cortex (the decision-making part of our brain) that isn’t fully matured also play a part.

3. Teaching kids that their feelings don’t have to determine their behaviours. This is something we all have to learn eventually, and something I still remind myself of quite often. You can feel a certain way, and allow that feeling to be (i.e. observe it as though it’s “interesting”, because it doesn’t hold any power), and then choose how you will respond. The part of our brain that feels emotion is completely separate to the part that drives behaviour.

4. Building psychological safety. There are plenty of ways you can build psychological safety, but one of the easiest ways is by encouraging kids to ask questions and share ideas, and by being consistently approachable and calm when they do. I will never forget in Year 3 or 4 of school when a teacher asked the classroom: “What are some other names for police officers?” I put my hand up and enthusiastically replied, “Cops!” She responded that I was disrespectful and that she hoped one day I’d need the police and they wouldn’t come. (I think she might have been expecting answers like Sergeant, Constable, etc…

who knows?). For the rest of that year, I avoided answering any questions.

5. Being consistent and fair with rules. This means not having rules for the sake of it (which makes your life harder, too), and ensuring that the rules apply equally to all, and they apply at all times. It also means being careful with promises and consequences: don’t make a promise you can’t keep, and don’t threaten a consequence if you won’t follow through. In a heated moment, I once told my daughter that I’d throw her iPad over the fence if she didn’t stop doing whatever it was she was doing. Let’s just say that didn’t end well for me.

6. Don’t let a child’s ‘flip-out’ lead to you ‘flipping out’. This is related to Point 3 and is a constant challenge for me personally and for many of my clients, as old habits die hard. I am constantly practising observing how I feel, allowing that feeling to be, then choosing how I act. I don’t always get it right. It’s important to be willing to work on ourselves rather than assume all problems lie solely with our kids.

7. Praise qualities they can continue to grow Constantly praising a child for innate qualities such as telling them they are “pretty” or “smart”, can lead to a lack of focus on the skills they can actually build and rely upon their whole lives –like effort, determination, courage, honesty, and kindness. If a child is constantly told they are “smart”, what happens when they fail an exam, or when another kid does better than them? Often, they decide they are actually not smart at all, so they lose confidence and sometimes give up completely. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with complimenting a child for innate qualities. If you’ve done this, don’t fret, but it’s really healthy for kids to focus on the qualities that they have some level of control over.

8. Model gratitude. Instead of questions such as, “How was school?” to which kids always mutter an unenthusiastic one-word response like, “Good”, teach them to reframe their day. Once your child has had some time to settle, ask them a question over dinner like: “What was something fun that happened today?” It’s a simple exercise that helps them look for the positive in each day, and avoid rumination. By asking these kinds of questions I’ve learned things about my kids that they’d probably never have thought to tell me otherwise. Who knows, it might just become the highlight of your day.

Waste 2 Art to Winners!

Local comp winner announced Friday

After months of busy handiwork, our eager local creatives can finally bring their family, friends and supporters together to enjoy their finished artworks for this year’s Waste 2 Art competition.

Waste 2 Art is a community art event, which showcases creative works made from reused and recycled waste materials.

An exhibition of Orange’s Waste 2 Art entries officially opened at the Orange Library on Monday, June 19.

This year’s theme, ‘Textiles and Fast Fashion’ brought in many interesting variations with different artists expressing different ideas of what the theme meant to them.

Orange City Council’s Environmental Sustainability Community Committee Chair, Cr David Mallard says the competition has captured imaginations across the city, as aspiring and professional artists, school students and interested community groups take up the challenge to create new life for waste materials.

“Creators across Orange have used innovative ways to visually represent the reduction and reuse of waste in Orange. I encourage

ELECTORATE

everyone to come along and see for themselves how people have taken rubbish and turned it into works of art,” Cr Mallard said.

Coordinator of Orange’s Waste 2 Art event, Monica Engel said the judges have done a great job carefully going through each artwork, and deciding the winners, but she encourages everyone to put their vote in for the “People’s Choice” award.

“There’ll be a prize for the people’s choice, but also, one of the voters will win a prize too!” Monica said excitedly.

The winners will be announced during the official opening at Orange City Library, 5pm on Friday, June 23.

Everyone is welcome to come along to congratulate the artists for their contributions and the dress code has been chosen to suit the occasion — handmade and repurposed is in vogue for the evening. Light refreshments will be served. Book your spot via Eventbrite.

The works will be displayed at the library until Friday 30 June. The winners will progress to the Regional Waste 2 Art competition and exhibition, which will be held at the Platform Art Hub in Blayney from 22 July to 19 August.

The Canowindra Historical Society and Museum plan to unveil new plaques at its Open Day during the October long weekend to encourage more families to get involved.

“We want to try and encourage more families to record the history of their families formally, in our register,” said Chris Berkeley, committee member of the Canowindra Historical Society.

Details needed include who in your family first came to the district, when and where from. Most plaques also give brief details of the pioneer’s occupation, their children and sometimes a few words on their life here, for example, business or property names.

Already, the Wiradjuri people and 107 settler families are represented. The family of Matthew Thomas and Willena Dwyer added their plaque last month.

The Pioneers’ Wall was erected in 2001 as part of the Bicentenary celebrations. It

Canowindra Historical Society seeking “pioneer families”

honours the families residing here before Federation in 1901 and so records their connections to today’s citizens.

“It is remarkable how often the Society is contacted by people seeking information on family history,” President of the Canowindra Historical Society, Dr Jennifer Wythes, said. “So, we really appreciate receiving information about our local pioneers and their descendants.”

The early European settlers came mainly from England, Ireland or Scotland – both as free migrants and ex-convicts, or their descendants. Some were from more distant parts of the world.

The Pioneer Wall was designed by the Canowindra local, Pamela Brown. Construction of the wall was undertaken by master craftsman bricklayer, the late Bill Scheer. The gates and fence were fabricated by Don Lawrence. The Pioneer Wall was

deliberately placed on the street side of the gates and fence so that they can be inspected at any time.

“The whole idea was just so there’d be a public recognition of families who’d been in the district for a good long while,” Mr Berkeley said. When asked about stories of the local families who currently sit immortalised upon the wall, he couldn’t help but laugh: “There’s hundreds!” he said. “Unfortunately I don’t have any offhand though, I’m afraid.”

But for those interested the Canowindra Historical Society has plenty of information up on their website, and they plan to republish the “Pioneer Register” in the next year.

There is ample space on the wall for additional plaques and the Canowindra Historical Society would welcome more pioneer families. If you are interested, please contact the museum at canowindrahistorical@gmail.com with details as soon as possible, with final details by Monday, June 26.

For those interested in having a look at the wall, it stands directly out the front of the Canowindra Museum.

“Anybody can inspect the wall at any time, we don’t have it behind a fence or anything,” Mr Berkeley said.

Ex-Services’ be ing on feel-good winter warmer as Hindy joins the hunt for best club meal in NSW

The hunt is on for the best club meal in NSW and Orange ExService’s Club reckon their warming winter favourite with a local twist is the perfect recipe for success!

Now in their third year, the ‘Your Local Club Perfect Plate Awards’ are designed to showcase the incredible quality and diversity of food on offer in club bistros around the state.

Between 30 May and 9 July, the public is encouraged to visit one of 140 participating NSW clubs, taste the ‘Perfect Plate’ dish on offer, and give a score out of five. The 13 clubs that receive the highest average score for their dishes will be crowned winners of their respective regions, while three state-

wide winners will be awarded in the small, medium and large club categories.

While it was the Bathurst RSL Club that won central west bragging rights in 2022, Orange Ex-Services’ Club chef Danny Evans is confident his comforting winter favourite has what it takes to win the Perfect Plate crown.

“This year, we’ve decided to go with a Cowra lamb shank with baby Dutch carrots and mashed potato – perfect for winter; it’s just a great time of the year for lamb shanks,” Chef Danny said.

“I’ve seen some of the other dishes out there and ours is right up there, we get plenty of five stars, so hopefully we win in the end.”

Club CEO Nathan Whiteside is certainly a fan and he too rates their chances this year

“Who doesn’t like mashed potato and a

lamb shank in the middle of winter!” Nathan said.

“Last year we did a burger, but this is a little bit more local with the Cowra lamb… It is a feel-good winter warmer and hopefully it goes alright!”

But Orange’s entry is facing some stiff competition, according to ClubsNSW ambassador and rugby league royalty, Nathan Hindmarsh.

Hindy has been given the tough job of travelling the state taste testing entries in this year’s competition and last Thursday, stopped by the Ex-Services’ Club to get a sample of the Cowra lamb shank.

“It is extremely tough! Because I can’t give everyone five stars, which I’d like to,” Hindy said. “The dishes I’ve had so far have been outstanding! I had some barramundi

in Bathurst, and then I had a slow-cooked lasagna in Mudgee, which was delicious!”

Still high from their win last year, Bathurst RSL has been pretty vocal about their own chances of winning, he said

“There’s been a few barbs thrown already from Bathurst towards Orange Ex-Services,” Hindy said. “So, we’ll see how it goes!”

Club diners also have a chance to win from their vote in the ‘Your Local Club Perfect Plate Awards’. While you can only vote for each Perfect Plate dish once, by tasting more competition dishes at more clubs, you boost your chances of winning a prize.

A $100 eftpos gift card that will be given away every day of the competition and the two diners who vote for the most Perfect Plate dishes will win a ‘foodie getaway’ for two valued at over $3,000 each.

CosMedic Collective brings vitamin therapy to the central west

Orange’s CosMedic Collective has become the first medical cosmetic clinic in the Central West to o er intravenous (IV) vitamin therapy, giving clients access to fast-acting, safe nutritional supplements tailored to suit their individual needs.

Looking good and feeling good go together, says Director of the CosMedic Collective, Kylie Duncan, who is passionate about the benefits of the IV vitamin therapy they’ve added alongside their other treatments.

A registered nurse with 13 years in the cosmetic space, Kylie founded the CosMedic Collective in 2021, seeing the need for a dedicated medical cosmetic clinic in Orange that brought health and beauty professionals under one roof. But until recently Kylie had resisted offering IV vitamin therapy as she wanted to assure herself that the treatment did offer real benefits for her clients.

“I really wanted to see the results on people and really look at the data around it before we offered something that just didn’t work,” says Kylie.

“And I’d resisted offering it here because my general principle is to eat well and you won’t need it. However, over the last few months, it’s become clear that some people, no matter how hard they try, are not going to get the nutrition that they need.”

First offering Vitamin B12 injections, Kylie says they discovered just how many people, particularly women, were deficient in Vitamin B12.

“So that set us down a path of looking at what else are people deficient in and how can we help” Kylie says.

“I have patients who are on chemotherapy and not everything they’re putting in their body is getting absorbed. We’ve got pregnant women who have severe morning sickness. Busy people who know they should eat well and exercise, but they’re just not getting the nutrition that they need.

“And with Covid and the flu season, viruses are really hitting people’s bodies really hard and they need extra supplementation to help them through.”

The advantage of IV Vitamin therapy is that it can deliver high doses of vitamin C, Vitamin B complex, zinc, magnesium and other things to fight winter illnesses more effectively than swallowing a handful of supplement capsules, says Kylie.

“We can put high concentrations of vitamins straight in and all the vitamins in the drip are water-soluble, so if your body

doesn’t need it, it will pass through,” she says.

And it is not just people who are unwell that have found IV Vitamin Therapy beneficial, says Kylie.

“We’ve got a big wellness community here in Orange. We’ve got a lot of bodybuilders and people that really work on extreme fitness who are looking for that extra boost, just to keep themselves really well and at the top of their game,” she says.

“I had two guys come in last week, who were going to an IronMan event and we gave them magnesium and vitamin B and things like that to help them with muscle soreness.”

Vitamin D injections are another offering that Kylie believes will benefit many people.

“A lot of people take Vitamin D supplementation as they get older, Vitamin D levels go down, there’s a decline in bone density and they put themselves up at risk for things like osteoporosis,” she says.

“Vitamin D comes from exposure to the sun and we live in Orange, which can be a challenging place to get enough. Then you add people like miners and shift workers

and there’s a lot of people who are probably vitamin D deficient.”

But safety is always the number one priority, says Kylie, and at the CosMedic Collective, you will only receive treatment from qualified medical professionals and only after a comprehensive assessment of your health history.

“We look at where they might be deficient and sometimes we send them for blood tests or get doctors’ permission if they’re going through certain treatment,” says Kylie, who encourages people to ask questions of them or their own doctor.

“If we don’t think it’s safe, we’re not going to do it,” she says. “We also pride ourselves that, if we don’t think the patient will benefit, we’re not going to do it.

“So with the IV therapies, if we think they’re not particularly deficient at anything, we’re not going to give them that — the same with our cosmetic procedures.”

We’re not afraid to refuse people treatment based on whether we think we can give them the best outcome. It is not for everyone, but it’s very safe and it’s very effective if it’s something that you need.”

Legacy sti c rying t ch 100 ye s on

Legacy Centenary Torch Relay arrives in Orange, July 29

It all began with a promise made to a dying soldier in the trenches on the Western Front, to “look after the missus and the kids.” It’s a promise that’s been kept for the past 100 years by volunteers across Australia, who have continued to look out for the widows and children of veterans who put their health and lives on the line for their country.

In 2023, Legacy commemorates 100 years and as part of commemorations local, veterans, widows and Legatees, will carry a torch through the streets of Orange on July 29 — a symbol of the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country.

The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay, presented by Defence Health, began in

Pozieres, France prior to ANZAC Day this year. The torch has since travelled to Menin Gate, Belgium, through the streets of London and across the globe before it landed in Albany, Western Australia last month.

It is now travelling around Australia on its way to the founding home of Legacy in Melbourne this October. The Centenary Torch will visit all 45 Legacy Clubs, including Orange on Saturday, July 29.

“We’ll have about 20 walkers,” Orange Legatee and local relay coordinator, Kate Hazelton said.

“They will either be legatees, or veterans, or widows who have been cared for. It starts at the botanic gardens at 10am… then we’ll work our way down and up to Robertson

Park where we’ll have a cauldron set up to be lit. There will be a few speeches and the Chair of Legacy Australia should be here.”

Kate is keen to get the word out ahead of the arrival of the Centenary Torch and would love to see people come out to cheer on the torch bearers as they walk the route to Robertson Park. More details will be available as the relay approaches, she said.

The Orange Legacy region covers a massive geographical area, extending from Blayney out to Dubbo, Coonamble and Nyngan. Across this area, volunteer Legatees look after about 160 women and children.

“Here in Orange, we have a Mother’s Day lunch, and we put on a Christmas lunch for the widows,” Kate said.

“Each of us, there’s about 20 Legatees here in Orange. We each have a couple of widows that we look after… we keep in touch, we go to see them every month, whether they’re in a home, or whether they live on their own.”

The community of Orange are very generous givers to the work of Legacy, Kate said, but the need for support is still there.

Across Australia Legacy clubs support more than 40,000 partners and children of veterans, but there are now an increasing number of younger families coming through as a result of Australia’s two-decade involvement in the war in Afghanistan. For more information on the relay or to find out how you can support Legacy, visit www.legacytorchrelay.com.au

Foster carers urgently needed to provide safe homes for local children

Arecent statewide survey found that 76% of foster carers rated their sense of achievement and fulfilment as seven out of ten or higher, and local foster care agency, Veritas House hopes the positive result inspires local residents to consider providing a safe home for a child or young person.

Almost 1900 carers were surveyed by My Forever Family in the NSW Carer Survey 2022 and Veritas House CEO, Jody Pearce says the top two areas identified by carers as needing additional support did not come as a surprise to Veritas House, as these had been a major focus over the past 18 months by the local agency.

“Carers identified in the survey that access to psychological services and behaviour support for children and young people in Out of Home Care were needed, and these are two areas Veritas has been focusing on over the past 18 months,” said Jody.

“We had already recognised the lack of access to clinical services in the region, so introduced a team of registered psychologists, clinical psychologists, provisional psychologists and an occupational therapist to deliver therapy and assessment services to support the learning and behaviour support needs of the children and young people in Out of Home Care who are being supported by Veritas House foster carers.”

Children and young people enter Foster Care for a myriad of reasons, but generally they have experienced a degree of trauma, neglect and abuse that required intervention and removal for their own safety and wellbeing. Consequently, children in care sometimes have difficulties with managing their behaviours and navigating their relationships and emotions. It is crucial they gain a sense of security and are provided with a safe and supportive home environment.

Almost 80 households in the Central

West are authorised Foster Carers with Veritas House, providing positive family environments for over 90 children and young people. However, Veritas is in need of more Foster Carers and hopes the positive satisfaction ratings reported in the carer survey will lead to more enquiries about becoming a foster carer in the months ahead.

“Our Foster Carers play a critical role in assisting children and young people in their care to grow and develop in a happy and heathy way and we were very pleased to see the sustained levels of carer satisfaction reflected in this survey compared to the previous survey in 2020, and despite some difficult years due to Covid,” said Jody.

“Veritas House staff work hard to provide our foster carers with a range of supports including ongoing training, education, respite and after-hours supports, and these survey results give us confidence that these efforts are allowing carers to focus their

energy on creating safe, loving homes for some of the most vulnerable children and young people in our community.”

Anyone considering becoming a foster carer must be over 18, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, in good health and without a criminal record. Carers can be single, married, in a de-facto or in a same sex relationship.

For more information about becoming a Carer with Veritas House, visit veritashouse. org.au. For more information on the NSW Carer Survey 2022 Report visit myforeverfamily.org.au/about-us/carersurvey/.

Veritas House is a not-for-profit organisation that was established in the Central West 40 years ago and has grown to become one of the largest providers of foster care, youth homelessness, family support and mental health services in the region, supporting more than 800 children and young people each year.

Overcoming adversity — Cody Logan’s journey to becoming a paramedic

Local boy Cody Logan’s journey to becoming a paramedic is a testament to his unwavering determination, even in the face of personal tragedy and hardship.

The first in his family to study at university, Cody had long dreamt of a career in the medical field and in 2019 enrolled in a Bachelor of Paramedicine at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst.

But Cody’s university career was far from easy, having to deal with the tragic passing of his father, a house fire at his family home here in Orange and a cancer diagnosis in the family. All this left him feeling mentally unwell and suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder.

But for the strong and resilient young man, it wasn’t enough to make him give up on his dreams.

“Never once did I consider quitting. I have always been so well supported by those around me that I never felt the need to quit,” Cody said.

“I knew that, although times were tough, they would get easier, and quitting definitely wasn’t going to make anything easier.”

The strong friendships he had made at university also helped to keep him grounded as he navigated his new course.

But university life and study also came with its stressors, both emotional and financial, Cody said.

James Sheahan

That’s where the not-for-profit, Country Education Foundation stepped in to help. An organisation dedicated to helping young rural and regional Australians access further education and training, the Foundation provided both financial and emotional support for Cody.

“They are the greatest group of humans I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I am so grateful for the social, financial and emotional support they have provided me over the past three years. They were always there when I needed anything and never hesitated to lend a hand,” Cody said.

Recently graduated, Cody now works as a paramedic in Tasmania, but his education journey isn’t over yet.

“My ultimate goal is to study for a Doctorate of Medicine, allowing me to return to rural and remote Australia and provide essential medical services where they are severely lacking,” he concluded.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF THE ASTLEY CUP!

Orange High School alumni marked the 100th anniversary of the Astley Cup with a celebration dinner at the Orange Ex-Services’ Club on Friday, June 16.

Founded in Dubbo in 1923 by businessman Lawrence Astley, the Astley Cup is a unique multi-sports competition played — almost every year since – between Dubbo College (formerly Dubbo High School), Bathurst High School and Orange High Schools. That a competition between three schools has been going for that long is almost unheard of, and it is believed to be one of the longest-running sporting competitions of any type in Australia.

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU FOR HILL END SUPPORT

Iwas back at Pyramul in the Hill End district recently to talk to farmers Max and Ralph Price and also local relief co-ordinator Penny Hundy about how important our community relief effort has been to local farmers who were devastated by the recent bushfires.

Penny Hundy did a fantastic job of coordinating the Hill End Bushfire relief effort, with the key assistance of Lions disaster relief coordinator Anne Jones and the Guerie Lions Club. There were approximately 600 bales of hay and two semis full of grain donated, as well as plenty of licks. It has made such a huge difference.

Recently in Parliament I thanked all of

the individuals and organisations who have supported what has been a massive community project. You can see the whole speech on my Facebook page.

A special thank you to Peter Sargent and the Team at Bathurst RSL Club who donated just over $19,000. I also want to acknowledge the incredibly generous donations made by Tony and Rose Spina, who contributed an amazing $10,000 to help our local farmers.

However, I once again called on the NSW Government to activate the $75,000 Special Disaster Grants for Hill End as a matter of urgency. It should have been done by the last NSW Government, and it needs to be done by this one.

Last week the generations came together in Orange to celebrate 100 years of Astley Cup competition between Orange, Bathurst and Dubbo High Schools.

One of the highlights was the war cry competition between the younger crew with their Barmy Army chant and the youngat-heart ex students who did a stirring rendition of the classic “Ricka Ticka” cry!

I also enjoyed sitting with Leigh Knight (class of 1947 school captain) and also Margaret (May) Edwards (class of 1953) who told me all about what school was like during the war years and and how Summer Street erupted with joy when it was announced that hostilities had ended and our troops were coming home. Current captains Bella Webster and Lucian Jordan-Smith and many other current students helped make the night so successful.

A huge thank you to the organising team and all who contributed to this outstanding event.

It was a perfectly planned evening that highlighted how sport unites schools, regions and generations.

CITIZENS’ ASSEMBLY FOR HOUSING AFFORDABILITY

If you’ve ever thought you could solve some of the nation’s big issues better than the pollies, you’re in luck.

A new proposal to establish a Citizens’ Assembly on Housing Affordability has been put forward by independent federal MPs, inviting everyday people to advise the Government on how to ease the housing crisis.

With the housing crisis in Australia at boiling point, and a lack of political consensus on ways to solve the issue, a Citizens’ Assembly would see 100 Australians from all backgrounds, regions and perspectives put their heads together to develop a shared set of recommendations for the Parliament.

I am in support of this proposal, and I believe that it is a fresh, new approach to tackle a

serious national problem.

The cold, hard truth is that governments don’t have all the answers. That will come as no surprise to country Australians. Hearing directly from our communities can make a real, positive difference to policy making.

Housing affordability is a huge issue in rural, regional and remote communities and a Citizens’ Assembly would be a very effective way of putting a spotlight on the serious impacts this is having and also help to find solutions.

I would encourage the Australian Government to embrace the Citizens’ Assembly as a way of working with communities to get better outcomes for Australians, regardless of how far away from capital cities they may live.

Last week hundreds gathered at Orange Airport to farewell a legend

- Max Hazelton AM OBE.

Max was the founder of Hazelton Airlines, which is known today as Regional Express (Rex).

Max was a true trailblazer of regional aviation who leaves a lasting legacy.

He connected the regions to the capital cities, helping to bridge that great city/country divide.

He was also a pioneer of agricultural aviation including night spraying and live exports, plus aerial firefighting.

He was an innovator who always thought outside of the box. The rule

book was sometimes an optional extra with Max! He literally ended up helping to re-write it!

He took his last flight in front of the assembled crowd which was a very fitting way to say farewell (fortunately the tower did not get a fly-by although no-one present who knew Max would have been surprised if this had occurred!).

Max was a great Australian who will be greatly missed.

Our sincere condolences to Max’s family, many friends and fellow flyers. He really was a legend of Australian aviation.

The Orange Film Society has announced a second screening of the heartwarming documentary, Audrey Napanangka.

The story of a Warlpiri woman, Audrey, and her Sicilian partner Santo as they navigate through colonial systems to keep the children they care for together. Audrey Napanangka was born at a time when the world was changing for the people in the Central Australian Desert. Settler colonisation was permeating the desert and forced changes and the fusion of two worlds shifted Audrey’s life forever. Today, Audrey raises young people to walk in many worlds, by centering culture, language, and Law in their lives alongside mainstream education. The intimate footage filmed over 10 years in Mparntwe (Alice Springs), Yuendumu and Audrey’s Warlpiri country Mount Theo, showcases a heartwarming story about the power of kinship and family in what is known as Australia.

Note, this is a demand screening and the event will only be confirmed when enough tickets are reserved.

When confirmed, the exclusive encore screening will be held at Odeon 5 Cinemas on Monday, July 17 at 6.30pm. Book your ticket at tickets.demand.film/event/12376

Orange Film Society screenings this week

This coming week the Orange Film Society is hosting two screenings of the award-winning French comedy, The Innocent at Odeon 5 for our local cinephiles.

Familial tensions, criminal hijinks and unexpected romance collide in the uproariously entertaining new comedy from the multi-talented Louis Garrel (A Faithful Man), about the misguided attempts of a dedicated son who, in trying to protect his mother, finds himself embroiled in an elaborate heist.

Joyfully paying homage to the great crime capers of the French New Wave, and partly inspired by events from his own life, Garrel’s witty and beautifully constructed film is a delirious mix of comedy, romance, suspense and action, with several twists too good to spoil.

See The Innocent at the Odeon 5 on Sunday, 25 June (evening screening check local listings) and Wednesday, 28 June (morning screening - check local listings)

Tickets are on sale from the box office - normal pricing applies. Members and non-members are welcome.

Gyoza are dumplings filled with ground meat and vegetables and wrapped in a thin dough. Also known as pot stickers, gyoza originated in China (where they are called jiaozi). They are commonly called gow gee, too, from the Cantonese pronunciation.

Dumplings can be boiled (shuî jiâo), steamed (zhēng jiâo), pan fried (jiān jiâo), or deep fried (zhá jiâo), and are traditionally served with a black vinegar or sesame oil dip. They can also be served in a soup (tāng jiâo).

They are extremely popular in Japan and Korea, and more and more they are becoming a comfort food for many families in the Western world. I personally love making them with my daughter, and this week I’d like to show you the easiest way to make the most delicious dumplings at home for a great winter lunch or dinner.

Regular pork mince is quite accessible in supermarkets, but if you can grind your own meat or ask your local butcher to make it for you, the quality of protein will increase dramatically.

Don’t be scared of making the dough, because you can buy it ready-made (which even many good restaurants do). Allow me to introduce you to a product called Gow Gee pastry, which is extremely easy to use and the result is ten times better than the other ones you usually buy in supermarkets.

I always pay my respects to traditional methods of cooking and ingredients from other cultures. This is my version of this delicious dish, understanding that the ingredients are what we can get here in Orange. And assuming that some are far from being traditional.

I love putting in humble good-value ingredients, like economical mince meat. Please embrace this option for your family, especially now with the cost of living getting tighter and tighter. You’ll see how everyone loves them, and your pocket will be happier as well.

In terms of filling, today I’m going to talk about pork mince. But it can be easily substituted with any other protein. For example, what about making prawn mince if you are a pescatarian?

My advice is always use a layer of cling wrap or baking paper to lay the pastry wrappers, be quick adding your filling, use water to seal them, then store them… being careful they don’t touch each other.

This is one of those weeks where I’m going to share what I do at home, but please adjust it to your liking. Do you like garlic? Add more! Ginger? Don’t be shy! Chilli? Go for it! Remember to be creative, and use the herbs from your veggie garden as well.

IMPORTANT: I love this recipe because you can make two packets at once (30 dumplings in each) and divide and freeze them for future lunch or dinner. This will save you heaps of dinner-rush moments and you will be able to feed your family well. A win-win situation in my opinion.

This three-bedroom family home is framed by an established garden, with tall trees and fencing a ording you plenty of shade, privacy and security in a superdesirable neighbourhood. Yet for all its quietness, the neighbourhood o ers many parks, an oval, and it’s just a good one-wood (or so!) from the Duntryleague golf course.

But you might not even want to venture far from this good-sized block because a covered outdoor area gives you year-round entertainment options, with the soul of the home – the kitchen – set in the heart of the building, with direct access to sun-filled living areas. But before you send out the party invitations, you will probably want to put your own artistic touches on this property. There is no risk in over-capitalising because the location is not going anywhere, the bones are solid, and the solid timber floors are the perfect basis for a renovation to bring out the full charm and character of this 1980s home.

All it needs is your imagination to turn it into a modern masterpiece!

Heifer Station under the hammer this Friday, June 23

One of Orange’s best-known tourism destinations and vineyards, Heifer Station, will go under the hammer this Friday, June 23.

Up for auction is the entire 51.44ha (127 acres) property, 9 kilometres west of Orange, which includes the award-winning wine business and cellar door, 24ha (59 acres) vineyard, four-bedroom country homestead and two-bedroom luxury ‘B&B’ accommodation.

When current owners Phillip and Michelle Stivens bought the property in 2009, the vineyard had been long neglected. Convinced it was worth saving, the couple spent three years getting the vineyard back into shape.

Making their first vintage in 2012, they opened the

cellar door in 2016, repurposing the century-old timber and corrugated iron wool shed on the property. In the years since, the cellar door grounds have been expanded and a second tasting room and function centre added.

Heifer Station has also hosted ‘Day on the Green’ music festival events, headlined by iconic Aussie rockers Cold Chisel in 2020 and Midnight Oil in 2022.

Selling agent Stewart Murphy of Elders Emms Mooney said it is a diverse offering that has attracted quite some interest.

Heifer Station will go to auction this Friday, June 23, at The Auction Centre, 152 William Street, Bathurst.

It’s the perfect time to plant bare-rooted roses

Garden tips from...

Passionate local gardeners Henrietta Hood and Peta Swift, co-founders of The Avid Gardener, are here to share a few tips and tricks to help Orange City Life readers in their own backyards.

This week, Henrietta explains how to plant bare-rooted roses for their best chance to thrive.

The term “bare root” is basically a plant that is dormant (asleep), without soil around the roots and then planted directly into the ground. Barerooted roses are generally lower in cost to purchase as there are fewer materials (potting mix, pots) and labour involved. It’s important to

remember to plant bare-rooted roses as soon as possible as they can dry out very quickly and will die.

This is how we plant bare-rooted roses at The Avid Gardener:

• Gently brush away sawdust from the roots.

• Rehydrate roses in water for 24-48 hours prior to planting.

• If necessary, prune back thick roots with clean, sharp secateurs. Leave any fine roots.

• Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the rose roots. Loosen the soil in the bottom of the hole.

• Prepare a mound of soil at the bottom of the hole and place the roots of the rose gently over the mound.

• Backfill with soil and press down firmly.

• Prune rose by a third to encourage good root growth.

• Mulch with organic sugar cane or equivalent.

• Water in well. Use at least 10 litres of water.

CROSS PURPOSES PROMISES,

PROMISES, PROMISES

Life is full of promises: promises that are kept and promises that aren’t. Promises are everywhere in life, from promising to do the chores to wedding vows. It’s awesome when we keep our promises but life gets messy when promises get broken. Kept promises fill us with joy but broken promises hurt us.

God also makes promises: the whole of the first half of the bible acts as a promise for God to come and save us from the messy world we live in but, unlike us, God always keeps his promises. God never breaks his promises.

God promises us that he will fix all that’s wrong in the world, the pain and suffering. No longer will we be stuck with our imperfect reality where we hurt each other and relationships don’t always work, but instead we will live in perfect harmony.

How can we know that God will keep his promises? Because he has kept his promises before. God promised that he would send a ‘wonderful advisor’ and he kept his promise by sending Jesus.

So are you going to trust in God’s promises for your life?

Haidee Edwards, the teacher of years four, five and six at Spring Hill Public School said it’s all part of an exciting way of getting students thinking about ways of being more sustainable.

“They’ve been learning about ‘paddock to plate,’ so where food comes from, and so this is going beyond that to see the waste that happens in the food industry,” Haidee said.

Jo used activities and games to engage the students and to encourage them to think about the choices they can make to minimise their impact on the environment.

“It’s been really good to partner with NetWaste to get an expert to come out to the school and explain everything,” Haidee said.

LIFEandTIMES with ANGUS GIBB

THE ASHES:

The Ashes are here again. This year’s contest is shaping up to be one for the ages. Whilst at the time of writing the first Test at Edgbaston is still delicately poised, whatever the result, it has been a great start to the series.

Much of the hype around this series has been about how Australia would be able to deal with the new phenomena known as ‘Bazball’ and, in the first couple of days, we have seen just how this new way that England plays has invigorated their game.

Australia is chasing that elusive first series victory on English soil since 2001. There is something special about winning a series overseas. It shows that you really are a great team and not just a flat-track bully. Winning a series in England is one of the pinnacles in Test cricket. I have always enjoyed watching cricket in England. There is something almost mystic about it. It is the home of the game. Everything is di erent: the stadiums; the atmosphere of the English crowd; the deep red of the Duke’s ball. The thick cloudcover with ever-threatening rain. It reminds me of playing cricket as a teenager in the cold grey summers of Tasmania.

Although I am not staying up late to watch each game as I used to, one of the first things I do in the morning is check the score with anticipation and read the review of the day’s play. There is always a sense of anticipation and excitement – mixed with trepidation

– as I have no idea how we have fared over the course of the day’s play. That is why I love Test cricket. It is so unpredictable. One moment a team is struggling to make inroads, the next moment Scott Boland has the ball in his hand and is weaving magic.

The greatest games are the ones where for four-and-a-half days, it has been a tug-of-war and it all comes down to the final few overs late in day five, on a wearing pitch, with fielders crowded around the bat.

But what is it all for? It is certainly for our entertainment and collective bragging rights if we win. Glory is something we all chase. Whether it is personal or collective. A chance to be recognised for our achievements. But is the glory lasting or fleeting? Even if Australia pulls o a remarkable series win for the first time in over 20 years, the glory of winning will not last. The Bible speaks about glory in a di erent way. It is the glory of eternal life. A glory that will never be lost or spoilt for the person who trusts in Jesus. In Colossians 1:27, Paul says: ‘To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles [those people who aren’t Jews] the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.’ True glory is found in Jesus. It is lasting. I am certainly enjoying the first Test and this series is promising to be great but, as I think about the glory it promises, for me, it is nothing compared to the hope of glory that is found in Jesus.

A HUGE THUMBS UP to Mitzi and her awesome staff at the Odeon Picture Theatre, who have organised twice now, a special 10am showing of movies for our Disability Boy’s Social Group, who can only attend at this time on Fridays. The boys (and their carer staff) really appreciate you going above and beyond, and all with a big smile. Thank you, Mitzi!

THUMBS DOWN This big long overdue thumbs down to the drivers who choose to ignore the 1-hour parking signs outside the office of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, Byng Street Orange. Please do the right thing by others.

A HUGE THUMBS UP and thank you to sales assistant Sophia from Officeworks. Sophia helped me put together a collage of photos of my daughter who had recently passed away. Her kindness was greatly appreciated.

THUMBS UP to the gentlemen who came to my rescue recently in the Village car park when I fell. They were true gentlemen.

THUMBS UP to the team working on the wetland’s development on the corner of Forbes Road and the western end of the Northern Distributor. What a pleasure to walk along the newly completed circular pathway while observing the local wildlife (birds), sunning themselves on the water’s edge. Your hard work is much appreciated. Many thanks.

THUMBS UP to the Phat Panda team at the Orange City Bowling Club who provided a delicious meal for a family function on the long weekend. The quality of the food was remarked upon by many of the guests visiting from out of town. Thumbs up as well to the Bowling Club staff for helping make it an enjoyable and special occasion.

THUMBS UP to the news and weather presenters on Channel 7 (local). The happy comradery shared between each other is lovely to watch and your professional dress code is inspiring too. Thank you for making this a pleasant experience each night.

THUMBS DOWN to the scam caller claiming to be MyGov and proceeding to tell me to click a link to receive my “youth” allowance. I got the last laugh, considering I’ll soon be celebrating my 86th birthday!
