Waste 2 Art is a community art event, which showcases creative works made from reused and recycled waste materials.

An exhibition of Orange’s Waste 2 Art entries officially opened at the Orange Library on Monday, June 19.

This year’s theme, ‘Textiles and Fast Fashion’ brought in many interesting variations with different artists expressing different ideas of what the theme meant to them.

Orange City Council’s Environmental Sustainability Community Committee Chair, Cr David Mallard says the competition has captured imaginations across the city, as aspiring and professional artists, school students and interested community groups take up the challenge to create new life for waste materials.

“Creators across Orange have used innovative ways to visually represent the reduction and reuse of waste in Orange. I encourage

everyone to come along and see for themselves how people have taken rubbish and turned it into works of art,” Cr Mallard said.

Coordinator of Orange’s Waste 2 Art event, Monica Engel said the judges have done a great job carefully going through each artwork, and deciding the winners, but she encourages everyone to put their vote in for the “People’s Choice” award.

“There’ll be a prize for the people’s choice, but also, one of the voters will win a prize too!” Monica said excitedly.

The winners will be announced during the official opening at Orange City Library, 5pm on Friday, June 23.

Everyone is welcome to come along to congratulate the artists for their contributions and the dress code has been chosen to suit the occasion — handmade and repurposed is in vogue for the evening. Light refreshments will be served. Book your spot via Eventbrite.

The works will be displayed at the library until Friday 30 June. The winners will progress to the Regional Waste 2 Art competition and exhibition, which will be held at the Platform Art Hub in Blayney from 22 July to 19 August.

The Canowindra Historical Society and Museum plan to unveil new plaques at its Open Day during the October long weekend to encourage more families to get involved.

“We want to try and encourage more families to record the history of their families formally, in our register,” said Chris Berkeley, committee member of the Canowindra Historical Society.

Details needed include who in your family first came to the district, when and where from. Most plaques also give brief details of the pioneer’s occupation, their children and sometimes a few words on their life here, for example, business or property names.

Already, the Wiradjuri people and 107 settler families are represented. The family of Matthew Thomas and Willena Dwyer added their plaque last month.

The Pioneers’ Wall was erected in 2001 as part of the Bicentenary celebrations. It
