Publisher’s Note The idea behind “Aplauso Magazine” is to share the positive influence that the Latin American culture and other cultures offer our society.

D

ear ar t friends, as some one who enjoys the beautiful ar t of drawing and painting, I always look for the oppor tunity to have an ar t publication in our city. With my Latin American heritage and living in Houston for the past 33 years, I have always been enthusiastic about ar t, and very passionate about painting. I think today’s ar t does not just depend on monetary success. It is meant to help our community, and that is why I have created “Aplauso”. My wish as I mentioned is to reach out to the ar t community with a vision about the concept of “Ar t Must Transcend”. This vision includes mastery, dominion, and talent to create a deep feeling of goodness that in turn communicates something special to the individual. If the work of ar t is unable to do this, then it is not a work of ar t. The work does not transcend and it therefore fails. Through friendly relationships my mission is to share my enthusiasm and passion for ar t. I will continue to promote the fine ar t our great city Houston has to offer and simultaneously share my progress as an ar tist and painter.

Angela Dillon Angela Dillon’s searingly intense paintings are almost painfully autobiographical and it is necessary to have at least some knowledge of her life to comprehend and appreciate them. She describes herself as umbilically attached to her country of birth, Mexico and although she has lived in France, Britain, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and United States, the sense of belonging to Mexico has never left her. Dillon paints what she loves, her subjects are influenced by her passions whether she’s invoking a memory from her childhood or addressing a current political issue. Dillon’s absolute presence in the moment is what gives her art amazing depth, the energy of her brush strokes, the buildup of textures and the array of unusual colors speak volumes about Angela, she’s moved by emotions. She also understands that inner force and is able to communicate her feelings in a way possible only by a mature and established artist.

Was born to a Catholic Mother, she prayed nightly to Cross in a tiny Altar. I am obsessed with Crosses because of her. Mine ...not about Religion, but about the symbol I see as her, standing, open arms lovingly . This painting, though, was done after my fathers passing, is a combo of emotions, all roll into one. Each painting is a page of my journal, my handprint ..my Journey. “Untitle” Acrylic on canvas 8 x 8 Ft

Lorena Morales is a Venezuelan born visual artist living and working in Houston, Texas since 2003. She earned certificates in Painting and Sculpture from The Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In 2011, she received a scholarship from The Carlos Cruz-Diez Foundation and the Glassell School to participate in the Advance Seminar in Contemporary Art: The Doors of Perception. She was one of the selected artists for SITE Houston 2015. In 2016, she was commissioned by Houston First Corporation to install her piece "Flight Plan" at George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston as part of their permanent public art collection. Her artworks had been shown in solo and group exhibitions within the USA as well as in Venezuela and Germany. She creates installations and sculptures that can be disassembled and rearranged, and paintings on Plexiglas that vary depending on the lighting in the room and the angle of the viewer. Her work focusses on the possibility of telling tales related to the impermanence of reality, movement of time and perception of home by using lines, shapes and colors. Lorena Morales is represented by Hooks-Epstein Galleries in Houston, TX, Camiba Art Gallery in Austin, TX, Contemporaneo in Asheville, NC and Art Nouveau Gallery in Miami, Florida. JANUARY AT THE JUNG CENTER: ON A JOURNEY WITH ANNETTE PALMER Annette Palmer’s work is about journeys – both geographical and emotional. She has relocated from her native Scotland many times, settling in Houston in 2006. In “Across the Miles,” Annette explores distance and connection through landscape and seascape paintings. Using texture, gold leaf, and forgotten means of communication, like antique love letters, she expresses feelings of connectivity across distance. For more than 50 years, The Jung Center has served as a nonprofit resource offering dynamic and compelling classes – “continuing education for the human spirit” – on a diverse range of psychological, artistic, and intellectual topics. The Jung Center’s building was originally designed as an art gallery and mounts approximately nine exhibits of work by both established and emerging artists each year. The Jung Center is an active member of the Houston Museum District. Admission to the gallery and opening

receptions is free and open to the public. This exhibit will be on display from January 4-29, 2018 at the Jung Center, 5200 Montrose Blvd. The public is invited to a gallery reception on Saturday, January 27, from 5:00-7:00 pm.

Joel Anderson turns inward and downward in his new works, exploring depth in the subject matter as well as in technique. As Anderson explains, “My last solo show incorporated 3D-printed elements projecting outward from the paintings. This show is almost a complete reversal of that, inviting the viewer to experience the dimensionality downward into semi-transparent layers of encaustic.” In a series entitled “Basswood Confessions”, memories - most fairly scandalous - are buried under twenty or more layers of encaustic, leaving a hazy impression under a foggy forest of stalwart trees. “As we age and some of us confront failing memory functions, there is a desire to write down some of our stories. But goodness, I don’t want everyone to know all the dirty details”, Anderson reflects. In his “Crash and Burn” series, Anderson literally set his artwork on fire to produce the impressions of waves crashing ashore or alternatively lava eruptions. “One interesting thing you can do with encaustics is to apply shellac to the surface and then light it on fire. With some additional manipulation with a blow torch, I was seeing that the shellac would in some cases submerge into the encaustic, giving a new dimensionality to the piece” Anderson says. This effect is also used as a background for his geometric social/political commentary pieces “Out of Balance”. And in the more direct interpretation of the show theme, scenes from Anderson’s 10,000 gallon koi pond are depicted, again utilizing layers and layers of encaustic to effect an underwater world of hazy abandon. Encaustic painting -- beeswax mixed with damar resin -- was practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. In fact, the word encaustic comes from the Greek word enkaiein, meaning to burn in, referring to the process of fusing the paint. A mid-20th century revival, including works by Diego Rivera and Jasper Johns, brought encaustic painting back into prominence. Anderson’s creative process uses modern, digital methods incorporated into the ancient medium. January 6 - February 1, 2018

Join VAA on the 3rd Monday of each month for our critique sessions at Art Supply on Main 2711 Main Street Houston, Texas 77002, 6:00 p.m. VAA critiques are opportunities for artists to share their work with other artists.
