Camp Haven Expansion Project to Help More Area Homeless achieve a Life of Self-Sufficiency

ore than 85% of the homeless men who have participated in Camp Haven’s transitional shelter-program have successfully graduated with a steady job, a place of their own and a new purpose driven outlook on life. To build upon this success, the non-profit organization is seeking community support to expand its shelter capacity with 8 additional efficiencies. This will allow them to accept more homeless participants into its shelter-program that provides basic needs, job skills training, counseling and more. $200,000 is needed to bring the expansion project to fruition. “We are asking churches, individuals and businesses to support us in this capital campaign effort, as it is vital to the transformational process of
the homeless men we are helping, and our community will be positively impacted as a result,” said Executive Director, Lalita Janke.

October is breast cancer awareness month and the American Cancer Society celebrates with the world’s largest movement to end breast cancer. Each year more than 300 non-competitive walks take place in the United States. October 15th Riverside Park in Vero Beach will be flooded with people in pink for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Indian River County presented by Carl’s Scully-Welsh Cancer Center. Everyone is welcome to attend and celebrate, walk and of course fundraise! Dollars raised enable the American Cancer Society to fund groundbreaking breast cancer research; provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by the disease; and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable. According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Statistics Center, an estimated 16,770 women in Florida will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 2,880 will die from it this year. This is why it’s so pressing to raise awareness and walk with us on October 15th. Funds raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer will help to provide services and support for patients in Indian River County. Some of the most requested services are: Road To Recovery®, an American Cancer Society program that provides free rides to cancer patients to and from treatments, Look Good Feel Better® workshops which help women with cancer manage the appearance-related side effects of treatment, and The American Cancer Society Reach To Recovery® program that matches trained volunteer breast cancer survivors to people facing or living with breast cancer. In addition, a patient Resource Center at the American Cancer Society office provides free wigs, mastectomy bras and a variety of hats, scarves and other comfort items for patients. The American Cancer Society Office is located at 3375 20th Street Suite 100, Vero Beach. The American Cancer Society is the nation’s largest voluntary health organization; the Society’s efforts have contributed to a 23% decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. since 1991, and a 50% drop in smoking rates. Having traveled throughout South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East (not to mention the United States), I would never have imagined that I would find my favorite dining establishment right here in Vero Beach. There is a chalk board sign that hangs on their wall which quotes John Lennon, “You can’t control which way the wind blows, but you can adjust your sails.” I have definitely adjusted mine … in the direction of CHIVE Quick and Creative Cuisine. The unassuming and casual décor with blackened electrical ducts hanging atop the dining area, the open kitchen showcasing not only a plethora of fresh ingredients, but also (and equally impressive) a welcoming and “I’m happy you are here” staff accentuate the tables and booths that all have a view of the Indian River through lush greenery just outside the large picturesque windows.

But I came for the food! No matter how inviting a restaurant looks, if the food doesn’t delight your palette, then it’s just a pretty room. My lunch at Chive did not disappoint! I started with an appetizer, Shrimp Fritters. The light and crunchy batter enveloped the most tender shrimp I have ever experienced. It was served over a bed of cabbage, kale and shredded carrots and a dipping sauce that I was told was Lou’s (one of the owners) secret recipe Tartar Sauce. This dish was a perfect blend of seafood, spices and herbs which worked in harmony with each other so as not to overpower. Normally, one would walk through the 3 steps of ordering the vegetables and accompaniments, the fish, seafood, chicken, or beef, and finally the signature toppings and sauces. I love this a la carte concept which allows for creative and culinary
freedom. However, today I asked the owner to surprise me. He chose the Swordfish (soft) taco which was accompanied by homemade tortilla chips and guacamole. Nestled among the fish were lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, cilantro, shredded carrots, yellow and jalapeno peppers, rice and black beans and all drizzled with a lemon mustard cream. At first glance, I was prepared to be overwhelmed by so many robust flavors competing with each other. Instead, I found each bite to represent a perfectly layered and harmonious flavor. Everything inside this taco complimented each other and brought out the best attributes of the other ingredients. (If only humans could be more like this taco!) Thank you CHIVE for anchoring in Vero Beach. Finally, a restaurant that offers a healthy and enticing alternative to… Well you know… the other stuff!

Over a decade ago, five women gathered to pray for U.S. troops serving in Iraq and around the globe. They called themselves the Military Moms Prayer Group. Today, U.S. troops are still in Iraq and other hotspots around the world -- Afghanistan, Africa, Asia, and South America – and the Military Moms Prayer Group is still praying. The interdenominational group meets weekly from 5-6 p.m. Thursdays at Christ Church Vero Beach (behind Outback), with 10 to 20 women turning up to pray on any given week. The group includes those with relatives in the military and “cheerleaders” who simply have a mom’s heart for the troops. “We are women of action,” says Linda Colontrelle, current President of Military Moms Prayer Group and one of the group’s founders. “To us, praying is an action verb.” The group’s action mission also includes an annual community wide gift-package drive for the troops called Holidays for Heroes. Through this drive, since 2006 an estimated 16,000 packages have reached U.S. servicemen and women in war zones or at sea in time for the holidays.
