New Real Estate School in Vero Beach Now Vero has a place where real estate agents and potential real estate agents can go for their continuing education or to learn about the industry and a rewarding career. The instructor and founder Michael Salazar was born in Colombia, South America. Michael comes from a large family many of whom are real estate professionals. He grew up in the City of Vero Beach. He graduated in 2009 from Indian River Charter High School with two degrees an Associates in Business Administration and an Associates in Marketing Management from Indian River State College. He attended the University of Miami, however, Michael found his passion in the real estate industry, and worked as a luxury real estate assistant in Miami. Michael eventually became a Licensed Florida Real Estate Agent n 2013 and truly loves making a difference in the industry. Teaching has always been another one of his passions. Michael started teaching virtual graphic design and drafting courses while he was still in high school. He has always believed in sharing his knowledge, one example, he would teach in large classroom settings pro-bono in Colombian disadvantaged neighborhoods when traveling to visit. Michael’s students will clearly see that he teaches simply for the joy of teaching. “There is no better sight than that of a student’s facial expressions -AHA MOMENTS- when the student really learns something new, even sometimes mastering a subject BETTER than the instructor, they’ll remember that moment forever” says Michael. Students shall find Michael’s style of teaching is both energetic and fun, making the students’ time in class fly-by while learning. Students remember the material very well by the memory cues he often mentions in class. In 2015 Michael Salazar put both these passions [teaching and real estate] together and got licensed as a Florida Real Estate Instructor. He taught for other real estate schools all over East Florida. Then, in January 2018 Michael founded Luxury Real Estate School, LLC. Anyone wanting to book a class should get in touch by calling 772-538-9698 or emailing Contact@LuxuryRealEstateSchool.com Things that make Luxury Real Estate School, LLC unique are: 1. Pricing: we have minimized our costs and pass along the savings. 2. Discounts: for ‘study buddies’ who take courses together. And, for U.S. military veterans, their spouses, and eligible dependents. 3. Location: plenty of parking. Next to the city marina and dog park. 4. Locally owned and operated; we support our local community. 5. Fully licensed Florida Real Estate School. 6. Everything needed for the class is included. 7. We offer a 2-Day CRAM Review for the Florida state exam. 8. Includes calculators, and a binder with tables and memory aids. 9. Classes are small (no more than 12) with a large 65” display. 10. And, so much more!!!

for our communities’ most pressingneeds through a morning of community service. This year United Way is trying to get a record- setting number of volunteers to work on a wide variety of projects that will benefit the community and those who live in it. Last year, over 1,000 volunteers were distributed throughout Indian River County to work on 59 projects that included tasks like painting, constructing, gardening, and beautifying.

“For those that are not aware of the day, it is simply what the title implies: a day of caring. I was astounded at the turnout of last year’s event. It was so empowering to see so many people from the community that wanted to make their home the best that it could be, to help their neighbors, and to lend a helping hand where it’s needed most,” said Sydney Mihailoff, Campaign Associate at United Way of Indian River and Coordinator of the Day of Caring event.

Volunteers of all ages are invited to come together as teams, families, or individuals. The event also serves as the kick-off for United Way’s 2018-2019 campaign, where a new fundraising goal will be announced by Campaign Co-Chairs Kip and Mary Jacoby, and Randy and Marge Riley. “This event is a win-win-win,” explained Michael Kint, United Way CEO, “volunteers have a fun, yet, meaningful experience; the community receives a significant boost with completed projects of all kinds; and the United Way 2018-2019 fundraising campaign kicks off with an amazing demonstration of giving back.”

Nonprofits of all types are invited to submit projects for completion. Schools and affiliated members are also welcome in giving project suggestions. Boys & Girls Clubs: A Safe Haven for Kids to Learn and Have Fun This Summer School may be out for the summer but the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County are most definitely in. More than 550 youth ages 6-18 are currently enrolled in the Boys & Girls Club’s summer program, which includes fun activities, drug/violence prevention programs, sports, reading, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), field trips and more!

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County was established in 2000 and expanded from a small elementary school classroom to three Clubhouses, one each in Vero Beach, Sebastian, and Fellsmere. The organization serves 1,500 children and teens annually afterschool and during the summer. While the Clubs open their doors to all youth, a special emphasis is placed on serving those who need us most.

New initiatives include the Destinations program, which will offer expanded college and career prep opportunities. Teenagers will benefit from one-on-one support from a fulltime guidance counselor who will help them identify career paths, complete necessary coursework, and develop a plan for their future. Furthermore, the Clubs have added swimming, basketball, soccer, and track and field leagues to help kids stay active and healthy. Vero Beach teenager Brittany holds the Boys & Girls Clubs near and dear to her heart. She graduated from Vero Beach High School in May and will attend Indian River State College to pursue a career in Tourism and Hospitality Management. “The Boys & Girls Clubs helped me in at least five different ways, which are to have confidence in myself, that sometimes I have to take risks, that I can beat or overcome my struggles, that there are some people I can talk to and trust, and that I can do anything I set my mind to, she said. ______________________________

Smash Stress to Smithereens! by Katherine L. Nall, Ph.D.

How do you deal with stress? How about anxiety? Any phobias? Interested in drug-free, non-addictive, non-invasive method to not only control stress, anxiety, and worry – but ELIMATE them? Tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT) may be the best non-addictive, non-invasive, effective, and self-administered answer. Initially I used Tapping to help math students overcome anxiety about studying math. Since I have become a Certified Practitioner in Tapping, clients have overcome fear of heights, anxiety about cold-calling sales, and overcoming barriers to changing habits like impulse eating or drinking. What the heck is Tapping anyway? Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT or tapping) is a modern combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine, psychiatry, psychology, and negative thoughts. Wait, negative thoughts? Aren’t we supposed to feel better through positive mental thinking? We can feel better through positive mental thinking – temporarily. How many times have you made positive affirmations only to hear the questions from your inner voice – “What are you thinking?”, “Who do you think you are?”, or “What makes you think you can do that?” Tapping brings the negative to the forefront; acknowledges the negative; thanks the negative for all the good it has done to keep you safe; then releases the negative so the positive can swoop in and take control!

Tapping consists of actually tapping on certain parts on your body where your meridians are closest to your skin while repeating certain phrases. A TedX talk I presented in November 2017 gives more detail – you can watch the TedX talk on YouTube using this link: tiny.cc/NoMoreFear. Are you interested in knowing more? Email me at DrNallSpeaks@gmail. com; call me at 772-480-0541; check out my website at NallEdgeCo.com. Find out how you can smash stress to smithereens!

2018 SUMMER ART FAIR The Galleries at First Pres has had over a year of successful art shows. This summer will be no exception as the Galleries present members and friends of First Presbyterian Church to display samplings of their artwork in a Summer Art Fair. Up to nine different artists will be featured in the exhibits beginning July 8, running until September 30. An opening reception will be held Sunday, July 15 from 3pm to 5pm throughout the campus of First Presbyterian Church at 520 Royal Palm Boulevard in Vero Beach. Anne Malsbary’s nature photography will be prominently displayed in the lobby of the Center for Christian Life as the featured artist for the show. She is an Elder in the church and part of the Discipleship committee. Anne was only eight years old when she fell in love with photography. After receiving a degree in drama with a specialization in scene design, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Speech Pathology. Her love for photography was renewed while taking photos of her Speech Therapy clients and upon her husband’s job change and move to Connecticut she, too, chose to make a career change to pursue her lifelong dream of being a photographer. “I enjoy taking photographs of nature that tell a story. You can just look at the photograph and imagine what’s going on and what did that bird say or think,” says Anne. Throughout the years Anne has found herself enjoying many different photography styles from family portraits to farm animals. She now enjoys traveling the world taking mostly nature photographs. The Galleries at First Pres curator Peter Coe, the late father of Paul Lane Ives and Nancy Ives Rumford, still life and scenic paintings by Catherine Reichert, award-winning artists Pat DeRobertis and Tom Peters, and a several more artists will all be included in this exciting exhibition of church members and friends.

Restaurant Review:

By Susan Harris

Photos by Scott Finney

Delicious appetizers appear on your table: Selena’s White BBQ Shrimp sautéed in a New Orleans white BBQ sauce (my favorite), Brie Pillows, Asian Chicken Wings (finished on the grill and according to the wing connoisseur in our party a 10), Smoked Salmon Bruschetta and Avocado Ranch Fried Mushrooms. The temperature is perfect, the company fun and the atmosphere delightful. (Faces you know, faces you want to get to know).

Then it becomes serious what entrees should we order? We need guidance. The charming owner Bobby Del Campo and talented partner and Chef Sean Tuohy have perfected and brought with them from their past restaurant venues some culinary masterpieces: Grilled Mushroom Meatloaf, Teriyaki Steak (phenomenally tender and delicious) and a Tampa style Cuban with salami (WOW). There’s a lot more on the menu but if Chef Sean recommends it and Bobby says it’s his favorite, you go with it. As we wait for our dinner to arrive we see some beautiful burgers going by with luscious looking French fries. (I’m already thinking next time) Tables are filling up, people are talking, the crowd seems very happy. Some frozen drinks go by they are Froses house special - frozen rose wine perfect for a tropical evening treat.

Picture it: Summer. A beautiful Saturday evening listening to Brazilian and contemporary music by the talented guitar strumming singer Manny Manero... and it’s happening under the stars on 14th Ave. in downtown Vero Beach at the magical Post & Vine.

Then our entrees arrive . The meatloaf two generous slices covered with cremini mushrooms in a sherry gravy accompanied by Bobby D’s potato salad. A crowd pleaser as everyone wanted to try it and gave it a thumbs up! The Teriyaki steak and fries was a another winner and disappeared quickly. The Cuban has to be talked about: two people in our party thought it was the best Cuban they had ever had. The salami gives a certain something a pizzazz that makes it sing. Embarrassingly we polished it all off and then were alert and listening when dessert was brought up. We decided to have Key Lime Pie, Coffee and Tea. Their coffee is Kahwa, a luxurious aromatic blend from Tampa and roasted in St. Pete. They also have many assorted teas to choose from (a welcome touch). The Key Lime Pie was sensational - once again being voted the best that we have ever had.

Post & Vine seems that magical kind of restaurant with excellent food, service, prices and ambiance. What more could you want? An outdoor pizza oven? Bobby Del Campo promises the pizza oven is coming soon and I’m sure they will do an excellent job.

The Fourth Annual... Abnormal Barefoot Formal! Waldo’s Restaurant will once again host the fun and wacky Barefoot Beach Ball to benefit The Vero Beach Lifeguard Association. The Barefoot Beach Ball will be held the Sunday of Labor Day weekend September 2, 2018 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Last year, the sold-out event had guests come dressed in formal attire with a silly spin. Everything from bowties with beach trunks to boas and bikinis were there, with flare! This zany “barefoot black tie” event is fun for the whole family. Guests will be treated to great music, tasty food, beach giveaways, and more. Fun activities are planned to keep the mood merry until 7:41pm (sunset) when the “hunk dunk” puts the lifeguards in the water. Then, all in attendance will simultaneously jump in the ocean still dressed in their funky finery. Lifeguards will be manning the waters and great photo opportunities will ensue! Each year, the musicians of the band led a conga line into the ocean! A new added twist this year will be a poker stroll pub crawl starting at 4pm at Waldos… even if you don’t know how to play poker, you don’t need to! You’ll be guided the whole way through! Participants of the crawl are encouraged to dress for the Barefoot Beach Ball in their wackiest. The crawl will leave Waldos at 4:30 and walk down ocean drive “parade like” walking to Vero favorite beachside bars like: Grape and Grind, Orchid Island Brewery and the Bungalow. Crawl goers will then return to Waldos

for a reception of free food and music while winners of the poker stroll are announced, and then some of the Beach Ball favorite games: Pin the Whistle on the Lifeguard, Pie eating contest and pictures with the mermaids! Be a sponsor for this event and help us help the lifeguards build their new guardhouse while supporting a family friendly, fun event! Due to the popularity of this event, no tickets will be sold, but funds will be raised through sponsorship and food and drink sales, donated in part by Waldo’s Restaurant and Sysco foods, as well as the you pick it auction which will start at 1pm. Fundraising for VBLA, including the Barefoot Beach Ball, allowed us to restore 9 – 5pm protection. We also increased lifeguards and have minimized the rolling closures of protected beaches that occur due to understaffing. We now have ATVs at every tower, so the guards can get to those in need, faster. The next vital step is for a lifeguard tower at Humiston Beach to greatly increase effectiveness and view in one of our busiest beach areas, serving both tourists and residents. We cannot do this without your support! For Sponsorship information please contact Donna Roberts at Idea Garden 772-778-2832. Ideagardendonna@cs.com Three Great events on Sunday, September 2, Labor Day weekend! • 7am Race to the Wreck RSVP to be made to VBLA.org • 4pm Poker Pub Crawl gathers at Waldos • 4:30pm Pub Crawl “Parade leaves Waldo’s • 6:30pm Pub Crawl returns to Waldos for the Barefoot Beach Ball reception with food, mermaids and games! • 7:41pm Take the Plunge!

Then-VBCBA board member Tom Michaels and Karen Gaskill present hundreds of eyeglass frames to Dr. Norman Meyer and Jerry Kennerk of the Sebastian Lion’s Club in 2013.

Karen’s foundational scripture was 2 Corinthians 8: 7-15. This scripture was in hopes that others would follow Karen in giving and then there would be more funds for local non profit Christian ministries. To date, VBCBA has donated $170,000 to local non profits and there are currently 83 business members and 29 non profits involved. Membership is only $150 per year. The VBCBA board members are all volunteers.

The amount of the purchase was $6,500. Originally the minister wanted $15,000. Karen then donated her investment to VBCBA, made it a non profit where all the funds from membership and any fundraising and donations go to local Christian ministries that are otherwise often overlooked by mainstream church support.

Who Do You Resemble? By Joe Pellegrino Picture this… I once received a chain email (which, by the way, I hate!) The email explained that there are some people who are so close to their dogs that they end up looking like them. It stated that because of all the time spent with the dogs - playing with them, cleaning them, even eating with them – an owner might begin to take on a bit of their dog’s likeness. As I read on it seemed hard to believe, but when I scrolled down to see the attached pictures, I burst out laughing! There were several side by side comparisons of people and their dogs. While obviously the people still had their human traits, the similarities I saw were unbelievable! From a woman who looked like her poodle to a scruffy old man who looked like his bulldog, these people really did resemble their dogs. As I sat down and thought about it, I realized it really does work that way, doesn’t it? We really do take on the traits of those with whom we closely associate. While sometimes this can be beneficial, many times this pattern works negatively. Bottom line is that bad company corrupts good character. You can see this pattern occurring so many times with young people. They find popular kids,

athletes, movie stars, and the like to look up to. In an effort to be just like them they try to dress the same, talk the same, even decorate their bodies the same with tattoos and piercings. I always find it so interesting how the “role model” relationship works. Essentially, there is a very shallow image of the model presented. This image is displayed either as a result of personal perception, a movie appearance, a television interview, or something along those lines that makes people in need of a model to think, “This is who I need to be like.” Is it really? Think about it… I issue you a challenge today. Think about who you hang around with and who you look up to. Write down what they have in common and what they stand for. If you have the courage to do this, I bet you will find that the commonalities of what they share represent who you are or are becoming. Like what you see? If not, it’s time for some new friends!

Legislative Update By Representative Erin Grall

The 2018 Florida Legislative session presented monumental challenges. Prior to session, there was great focus on Florida’s preparation for and response to Hurricane Irma. The Select Committee on Hurricane Response and Preparedness was formed, and the recommendations resulted in meaningful legislation to help our communities improve preparation and recovery efforts with future storms. The tragic event at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School had a transformative impact on session. The School Safety Bill addressed the hardening of our schools, increased security on campus, firearm regulations, greater access to mental health services, and better coordination of governmental agencies. The legislation also established a Commission to investigate the Parkland shooting and offer recommendations to ensure we make our schools safe for our children and teachers. I’m certain the legislature will revisit this important issue in 2019. We passed a balanced budget continuing a conservative approach of responsibly funding our state’s critical needs, including significant investments for funding hurricane response and preparedness, addressing agriculture and environmental needs, providing funds for important health care programs, and increasing total educational spending by $101.50 per student. The budget reflects a commitment to protecting our natural resources, with a $100.8 million funding of the Florida Forever program, $61.2 million for beach restoration projects, and $248.1 million for Everglades restoration. Our entire nation is facing an opioid crisis. Legislation signed into law placing restrictions on prescribing controlled

substances, prohibiting pharmacists from dispensing controlled substances to persons not known to them, and strengthening reporting requirements of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs will help combat the ability of individuals to “doctor shop.” High-speed rail presents enormous safety and cost concerns for our community. The budget provided for an independent study into appropriate safety mechanisms. The results of the study are expected by November 1, 2018, and will provide guidance for future legislative efforts to curtail the negative impact of high-speed rail to our community. With over $1 billion dollars spent on early education each year in Florida, accountability is essential. A highlight of session was the passage of the School Readiness Accountability Bill, HB 1091. I was proud to sponsor the legislation and am grateful for the input received from community leaders on the final product. It is an honor to serve the citizens of District 54 in the Florida House of Representatives. Please don’t hesitate to contact our office if we may be of service. www.myfloridahouse.gov

Adoption Option Care

Care Net’s Adoption Option Program helps women and men understand their options in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

CARING ♥ COMPASSSIONATE ♥ CONFIDENTIAL

The Adoption Option program begins with basic decision-making to weigh each client’s options and to make a personalized adoption plan based on what is important. In most cases funds are available for material needs of pregnant women who choose an adoption plan for their baby, including, but not limited to: clothing, housing, medical care, food, utilities, etc. Care Net recognizes adoption as one life-affirming alternative to abortion. Care Net Pregnancy Center of IRC is not an adoption agency but provides multiple agency referrals at the client’s request. You can help care for a mother by simply switching your license plate. To make the switch, go to http://myfloridaspecialtyplate.com/choose-life.html

"Care Net is a place where any mother can feel safe and secure because they will always be there to help women through some of the hardest decisions in life." -Ashley, Adoption client

OUR STORY AMERICAN ICON BREWERY was inspired by and brought to life by its home, the nearly 100-year-old Historic Diesel Plant — an iconic American building. As the flagship of Vero Beach’s downtown arts district, AIB’s mission is to serve fresh, quality craft beer and homemade food in a relaxed atmosphere that everyone can enjoy. American Icon is more than a brewery — it is a culture and an experience.
