Love, Compassion and Accomplishment are behind the story of H.A.L.O. No-Kill Rescue In 2006 Jacque Petrone, the founder of H.A.L.O. No-Kill Rescue wanted to make it her mission to help the over 4,000 animals being euthanized in Indian River County every year. Fast-forward eleven years; HALO’s mission is getting closer. Through a lot of hard work, great community education and support the County euthanasia rate has been reduced 71%! H.A.L.O. is Indian River County’s only no kill, non-profit animal rescue and adoption center. Through the support of our community, H.A.L.O. continues to save hundreds of animals each and every month. At H.A.L.O. no animal is ever euthanized for age, a treatable medical condition, or behavioral problem. They are cared for both physically and emotionally until each one is ready for a family of their own. Through the partnership of incredible veterinarians who believe in the merits of a no kill community,

H.A.L.O. offers the lowest cost spay & neuter program in Indian River County designed to prevent hundreds of unwanted pregnancies that would otherwise occur each year. HALO has adoption centers in Sebastian and Vero Beach. You will also see us at events across our county where we showcase rescues looking for homes. HALO’s mission is funded through your tax-deductible donations, annual events, and, in March of 2015, HALO’s Rescued Treasures opened. The idea of a thrift store that would provide high quality merchandise at affordable prices not only served our community but also performed beyond our expectations. We know that where there is compassion for every life- along with increased education and awarenesslifesaving programs will flourish within the community, delivering the results we all desire… an end to unnecessary killing of companion animals.

Babygurl’s and Amaretta’s stories are just two examples of the love and compassion for animals whose lives are saved by H.A.L.O. Babygurl was abandoned because she could no longer walk. She dragged herself through H.A.L.O.’s doors to start her journey of miracles. Surrendered with severe hip dysplasia, she amazed the staff that her spirits were still high. However, the one thing Babygurl loved more then attention was the outdoors, but she was very limited to where she could walk.

Like many fairytales, this one has a happy ending. A donor who saw her while touring H.A.L.O. made the decision to donate a cart with wheels and she was able to run like a rabbit and exercise her legs again. Then, after seeing her story on social media, a wonderful couple came to the shelter and adopted Babygurl. She now spends her days living a life of love and happiness. Amaretta was a cat surrendered with one of the worst skin conditions ever seen. Numerous veterinarians tried to help but finally euthanasia was recommended as the only answer. H.A.L.O. was not ready to give up.

Everyone felt defeated as to the quality of life she really could have, so, in a last effort, Jacque Petrone packed her up and took her home. One year later she has made amazing progress and every day is a good day filled with adventure and love. Amaretta teaches us to never give up and never underestimate the healing powers of a loving home. We look for the continuing support of our community to be the voice for helpless animals. You can help by adopting, donating, volunteering, fostering, sponsoring an animal, participating in an adoption or fundraising event, shopping or just spreading the word that through compassion and love no kill rescue can be achieved! Visit H.A.L.O.’s website for more information on the shelter as well as for our locations and hours. www.halorescuefl.org

Countdown to National Health Center Week 2017 National Campaign Celebrates the Key to Healthier Communities

Treasure Coast Community Health will be celebrating National Health Center Week with a Health Fair on Tuesday August 8, 2017. National Health Center week is a national campaign designed to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s Health Centers over the course of more than five decades. As a Community Health Center, Treasure Coast Community Health continues to be one of the bright spots, locally, in nation’s health care system. In 1953, long-time Vero Beach resident Peggy Kuster made a promise to the animals of Indian River County.

Tired of seeing dogs and cats running along the roadside and witnessing the plight of sick, starving, neglected and abused animals, Kuster founded the Animal Protective Society of Vero Beach to provide animals with a safe haven. With kennels near the Vero Beach airport serving as the county’s makeshift pound, Kuster set her sights on creating a true animal shelter that provided animals with compassion and dignity. Our name may have changed but our mission is the same. Sixty-four years later, Kuster would be amazed as more than 50 staffers and 300 volunteers carry on her work at the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVB) to make our community a kindlier place for animals. Currently located adjacent to Indian River County’s fairgrounds at 6230 77th Street, Vero Beach, the shelter’s beautiful campus includes a 44,000 square-foot building, animal wellness clinic, training and education center, chapel, barn, pet supply shop and volunteer pavilion.

Accepting anywhere from 5,000-6,000 animals annually, one of the shelter’s most critical roles involves adoption. Re-homing homeless animals is serious business at the Humane Society, which works to introduce prospective adopters to animals who will be the best match. HSVB’s adoption counselors may match a family with a pup who previously lived in a household with children, an avid jogger may wind up with a dog who loves to run, while an avid reader might go home with a cuddly, adoring lap cat.

Meghan bathing puppy

But it’s the issue of pet overpopulation that the Humane Society must grapple with on a daily basis. Hypothetically, two dogs and their offspring can produce 67,000 pups in six years. And when it comes to cats, the numbers are even more shocking: allow two cats and their offspring to breed and soon you’ll wind up with 370,000 cats in just seven years. With more animals than homes to responsibly care for them all, it’s easy to understand why the Humane Society works so aggressively on the issue of spay/ neuter. The shelter’s recently expanded 3,600 square-foot Miriam Oberkotter Animal Wellness Clinic sterilizes and provides care for the shelter’s animals while also offering low-cost spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchipping and other wellness services to pets belonging to members of the public, regardless of income or county of residency. The HSVB’s commitment to helping animals in need extends far beyond the shelter’s walls. The Humane Society’ veterinary team regularly visits some of Indian River County’s most underserved communities to offer low-cost and free animal wellness services. When necessary, the Humane Society will pick up and deliver animals requiring care if their caretaker doesn’t have transportation. The shelter also offers additional public support via its free educational programs and talks to schools and civic groups throughout the county. Another important service provided by HSVB involves reuniting lost animals with their families. The Humane Society encourages anyone who has lost or found a pet to call the shelter or file a report online. Each and every day, staff carefully review reports with the hope of returning lost pets to the people who love them most.

Tonilynn Nappo and feline friend check out a photo during the children’s animal photography class

The shelter also offers free pre-engraved pet ID tags to anyone with pets. Each tag has a unique identification number, the shelter’s 24-hour paging service and says “I AM LOST.” The shelter’s staff are on call nights, weekends and holidays to reunite animals who are lost or found. Should a pet wearing one of the shelter’s ID tags be located, a staff will make every attempt to contact the pet parent. When disaster strikes, the Humane Society stands ready to help Indian River County’s animal friends. With many of the shelter’s employees specially trained as animal disaster responders, the staff often divvy up duties during hurricanes and other natural disasters. Some sleep at the shelter during emergencies in order to care for the homeless pets already in their care as well as those belonging to First Responders and special-needs individuals. Other staffers assist community members at the Indian River County Pet-Friendly Shelter located at Liberty Magnet School. We may have had humble beginnings, but thanks to Peggy’s vision and the efforts of our volunteers, donors, community partners and staff, the HSVB continues its work protecting and helping the animals of Indian River County.

Restaurant Review:

Sean Ryan Pub - A Taste of the Emerald Isle in Downtown Vero Beach By Marcela DelSolar

Photos by Scott Finney

Sean Ryan’s Pub - Their restaurant marquis reads: “Drink for the Spirit” (with 39 varieties of Irish whiskey, my spirit is surely flying high) “Music for the Soul” (they proudly support local musicians such as Jersey on the ukulele and Ben Mejia the soulful guitarist) “and Food for the Body”. This last part is why I came tonight! For starters, the Guinness Cheese Crock consists of (3) soft pretzels made for an Irish giant with a crock of hot and bubbling cheese and Guinness. It is the most popular item on the menu (I am told, and I completely understand why). Guinness heaven with a hint of smoky bacon flavor, warm, soft, and honestly, a meal in itself. Next stop on the Irish tour… Bangers and Mash. Granny style mashed potatoes with just enough lumps to make me feel like I am sitting at granny’s kitchen table, amidst the braised cabbage that sweetens the spicy sausage and calls for another sip of Kilkenny (one of the many draft choices on their spirited menu). Honestly, it’s not really an Guinness Cheese Crock Irish meal without a pint of something! And finally, upon chef ’s insistence, I try the Planked Irish Salmon … the dill hollandaise drizzled piece of heaven, served over tomato rice is my favorite dish on the menu. The aromatic and full-bodied flavor is what creates this scrumptiously moist and tender Bangers and Mash Irish salmon. A trip to Ireland is still on my bucket list – but I am thrilled to have Sean Ryan right here in Vero. May the luck of the Irish (coffee) be with you and as the old Irish proverb says … “Laughter is brightest where food is best”. Be prepared to laugh all night long! Planked Irish Salmon

Main Street

Main Street Vero Beach (MSVB) is a 501©3 non-profit organization; funds raised go toward the promotion of restoration, beautification and community of Historic Downtown. Sponsorships, grants and memberships are our primary revenue stream in addition to all our monthly events that help MSVB’s mission to stimulate our Vero Beach Downtown and help contribute to the growth of our restaurants, retailers, and members. Popular events such as Downtown Friday, The Hibiscus Festival, Networking Breakfasts, Resident and Monthly Guest Artists, Shop Small Events, Car Shows, Vintage Markets, landscaping, signage, and sharing information about our members through Social Media and collateral at our 14th Avenue Welcome Center are all ways our local merchants along with the MSVB staff, board and volunteers work cohesively to accomplish our Downtown Mission. In addition, Social Media, Marketing Campaigns and word of mouth advertising have played a key role in the success of the upswing of Main Street. According to Elaine Jones, Executive Director of Main Street Vero Beach, some of the reasons Main Streets are important are, “Downtowns keep profits local, they support family owned businesses and increase the community tax base. They are also a reflection of the community’s image, pride and prosperity. Downtown Vero Beach represents a huge public and private investment and employs hundreds of people. This is the “Historic Core of our Community”.” Consider teaming up with MSVB to foster support of a positive image for our community to residents and visitors alike; by creating job opportunities and development of a thriving downtown; and by the preservation of the community’s historic resources. Many volunteer opportunities for MSVB are available with our events and we are open to discuss creative ideas to improve our downtown. The Main Street Vero Beach Welcome Center is conveniently situated at 2036 14th Avenue next to The Old Theatre. Hours of operation are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm M-F. Contact us at 772.643.6782, by email at info@mainstreetverobeach.org or stop by at our 2036 14th Avenue Welcome Center location. Be sure to Like us on Facebook, follow us on twitter and download the Distrx Main Street App to receive special promotions and information from our downtown merchants.

Abandoned Dogs Trained to Help Local Veterans Since 2001, Dogs For Life has been turning lives around by training service dogs for veterans and individuals.

At the same time, we also provide a renewed purpose for abandoned dogs through our specialized training. Dogs are trained with their owners to be the ears that hear smoke alarms; paws that tap 911 emergency telephones; legs that provide stability and to be a life-long partner to recognize and ease the effects of post-traumatic stress.

the number of veterans with hearing and physical disabilities, and the numbers are staggering. Men and women who have served our country deserve an opportunity to live a self-reliant, productive life and to pursue the American dream.

PTSD symptoms such as hyper-vigilance, anxiety attacks and perceived threats trigger what is known as the “flight or fight mode, which served these soldiers well when they were in combat. However, if untreated, PTS can become a life sentence of mental illness that affects the ability to sleep, interact socially, and maintain a job or a meaningful relationship. Veterans account for 20% of suicides in the U.S. and 1/3 of the homeless population in the state of Florida; and 45% suffer from mental illness. Add to this

Harmony with her service dog Gunny

Currently, the need for assistance dogs far outweighs the availability, and this is an unacceptable situation. If you also find this unacceptable, you can help our local veterans by donating through our Facebook page, website, US mail or we can process donations with your credit card at our front desk.

Over these many years, the Club strives to achieve the mission of “changing the world one child and one community at a time.” Kiwanis International, founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan has over 600,000 members in 80 nations and geographic areas, provides over 18 million hours of service and raises more than $100 million for local and global causes. Locally, the Kiwanis Club of VeroTreasure Coast meets weekly and serves Indian River County in many youth related activities. Each January, Kiwanis hosts the Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament at Sandridge Golf Club. All proceeds go to provide college scholarships to Indian River County high school graduates. Criteria for the scholarships are provided on the Kiwanis website. Since 1987, over $160,000 in scholarships have been awarded.

Each June, Kiwanis sponsors the Take a Kid Fishing Tournament under the Barber Bridge. Hundreds of children ages 5-12 attend with parents to participate in a free event to introduce youth and parents to fishing. Kiwanis provides rods, reels, bait, prizes and a full lunch for all. Throughout each year, Kiwanis Youth in Action, conducts 18 work projects with over 200 teen and 100 adult volunteers to share their time, talents, and resources by painting and repairing homes of owners unable to repair themselves, or are disabled. Started 20 years ago, Kiwanis Youth in Action members paint houses, build handicap ramps, conduct beach cleanups, and perform general services for those in need. These are just some of the ways Kiwanis supports youth. Kiwanis also sponsors Key Clubs at each of the local high schools. Key Club students volunteer thousands of hours to assist in service projects. Kiwanis is all about helping children and impacting the lives of hundreds of youth in Indian River County each year. Grab Bars = A Safer Bathroom Jenny Streibick

If you are disabled, injured or aging in place, the most important aspect of a home is safety. Your own bathroom is definitely a place you want to feel safe. As we age our abilities become limited and safety becomes imperative. Grab bars will provide you with the safety and security you need for life’s daily activities. When properly installed, they are devices designed to enable a person to maintain balance, lessen fatigue, manage some portion of their weight while maneuvering or to give something to grab onto to prevent a slip or fall. Proper placement next to a toilet, in a shower or by a tub can improve stability and greatly reduce falls. Location of placement can also be based on which hand is dominate. We will individualize every installation by walking through a demonstration of your daily routine to meet your goals.

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) guidelines are supported by substantial research regarding the best placement of grab bars. Grab bars are often placed horizontally to provide assistance when sitting or rising. Vertical grab bars help with balance while standing. Some grab bars can be installed at an angle depending on user need. Suction grab bars are generally not dependable and should not be used if safety is your top priority. Bars should be mounted to stud framing or masonry walls. There are many considerations when deciding which grab bar to use. They are made of metal, plastic, fiberglass or composites and when installed near wet areas, they should be waterproof. They are available in many different sizes, colors and styles. There are also added features like knurled hand grips and lighted bars to consider. Home safety is our specialty. We have the experience and can share invaluable information on the type of grab bars you will need for the safety of you or a loved one. Call us today! Using Summer Break to Help Next School Year Go Smoother

Summer is a great time for relaxation, barbeques and days at the beach or pool. With school restarting in August, it is also a wonderful time for your child/teen to develop tools and strategies for improved learning next year. Does your child/teen lose assignments; forget to turn in completed work; have trouble starting tasks; make careless mistakes; procrastinate; or get discouraged about learning? If so, the Mental Health Association in Indian River County provides an Academic Skill Building Program for children/teens, ages 4-17, who: • are struggling students; • diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder with or without Hyperactivity; • have problem areas undermining their success. Ability to organize, focus, start and follow through with tasks, plan ahead, control emotions, learn from mistakes, use time wisely, persist with learning despite challenges, and solve problems independently are key areas for academic (and life) success. The program helps students and their families learn about strengths/weaknesses and gives intensive, individualized skill building to overcome problem areas.

For Indian River County residents, initial consultation about your child/ teen’s skill levels is at no charge. Quail Valley Charities Grant funding is available based on income and household size for Indian River County families. Children/teens 4 -17 living in other counties can enroll at set rates. Additionally, in our counseling center, we provide immediate access to a mental health professional through walk in screening (at no cost for Indian River County residents and by nominal fee for out of county) to determine needs and create a care plan for any needed follow-up. Our clinical staff also consult by phone about treatment options for mental health concerns. To access any of our services, please contact Mental Health Association at (772) 569-9788. Our Academic Skill Building Program is enrolling now.
