“Take Action. Spread Kindness.” This is the motto that Live Like Cole Foundation has promoted for the past two years now. And with the community’s abundant display of kindness, projects to create safe spaces in the county are finally on their way.

The Live Like Cole Foundation, a 501c3 organization, honors and memorializes the life of Nicholas “Cole” Coppola by supporting individuals and organizations who adopt Cole’s philosophy. This philosophy includes always helping where help is needed and lifting those up around him by encouraging their self-worth and importance. Cole never missed the opportunity to lend a helping hand, taking extraordinary efforts to ensure each person he encountered felt like the most important person to him. So far, the foundation has donated to the Buggy Bunch, H.A.L.O. Animal No-Kill Shelter, Hibiscus Children’s Center, Gifford Youth Achievement Center, local scholarships, Vero Beach Police Foundation, American Cancer Society, Vero Beach Karate Association, Indian River Soccer Association, and many other local organizations.

While the Live Like Cole Foundation’s mission is to encourage children and adults alike to support others, to foster self-worth and to help out their fellow man, their vision is to create safe spaces in Indian River County; their first project being the Cole Coppola Memorial Fishing Pier. “Members of the community have the opportunity to make their mark on this project, permanently inscribed in the very treads making up the fishing pier,” said Melanie Coppola, C.E.O. of Live Like Cole, and Cole’s sister. The pier will serve the public at large by providing a new safe place for fishing in the Indian River Lagoon, all while creating a brand new marine habitat for fish and other marine life to thrive. The pier will also serve as a place for remembering loved ones in a tranquil environment in one of Vero Beach’s most beautiful areas, Riverside Park. The foundation’s fundraising has been matched by a Florida Inland Navigational District grant. Members and local businesses in the community are able to name a tread for only $300. Construction by WILCO

Marine Construction begins early April and is scheduled to be completed by the end of summer. In addition to the pier, Live Like Cole will also be donating funds to repair the hurricane damaged docks at the Fountains in Royal Palm Pointe, naming the new docks “Live Like Cole Fishing Docks.” Another up-and-coming project Live Like Cole is bringing to Vero Beach is a bike sharing experience and is going to do so at no cost to the taxpayers or the city. Bike sharing is a service by which bicycles are available for shared use to individuals on a short term basis and for a nominal fee. This allows people to borrow a bike from any of the existing bike sharing stations and return it from where they started or at a different bike share station all together. Opportunities that come with this are alleviating Oceanside parking, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing traffic to local businesses, increasing physical activity and promoting tourism.

The bikes will be highly visible with safety lighting, reflectors, handlebar bells and will be regularly maintained. Elaine Coppola says, “Live Like Cole is dedicated to this wonderful community that has constantly showed its support from the beginning. So the foundation will continue to work hard to provide these safe places for children and adults.” For more information on the foundation or how to purchase your tread, visit LiveLikeCole.org.

Place of Hope is a unique children’s organization who has been serving children and families for 17 years

in Palm Beach County. Offering a comprehensive continuum of care including family-style foster care (emergency and long-term), family outreach and intervention, maternity care, safety for victims of domestic minor sex trafficking, transitional housing and support services, foster care recruitment and support, hope and healing opportunities for children and families who have been traumatized by abuse and neglect. In early 2015, Treasure Coast Community Based Care provider, Devereux CBC, invited Place of Hope to expand its traditional foster care model into Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee counties, making Place of Hope the

largest children’s organization in the region. Ranked #1 in the Nation by Charity Navigator three years in a row, for “Youth Development, Crisis Services and Shelter,” Place of Hope’s mission to providing stable and loving family environments for children and youth who are hurting and their families is evident. “We are committed to meeting desperate needs in our community and placing hope in the lives of these deserving children – one child and family at a time.” Charles L. Bender III, Founding CEO. Serving from Sebastian to North Broward County and west to Okeechobee County, Place of Hope cares for over 340 children, youth and families on a daily basis. Not only are they known for their traditional and family style foster care models, but also for their proactive approach to preventing child abuse and human trafficking. From their current

Indian River office, in the United Way of Indian River County, and their office in Tradition Square, Port St. Lucie, Place of Hope is educating the community on the harsh reality that human trafficking is happening in our region while also providing tangible steps to take action against it. Soon to come is their newest outreach center in Downtown Hobe Sound. This mixed use space will serve as the epicenter for Place of Hope growth initiatives including a cafĂŠ/lounge social enterprise, foster family training and licensing offices, as well as a large meeting space for events. The Harris L. Weinstein Outreach Center is anticipated to be complete late 2018, and like all of their buildings, will open debt free. “Place of Hope strives to foster hope rather than despair, potential rather than limitations, healing rather than hurting, belonging rather than isolation,

and what the future can be, rather than what the past has been. As the demand for quality families intensifies, so does their need for our support. Together, we can meet the physical, emotional and developmental needs of the children and youth in Indian River County. Learn more about Place of Hope, their GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency recognition, and consider providing hope today. Visit placeofhope. com or email jamieb@placeofhope.com

Giving back to our community Just five short months ago, Steve Glaser started a business networking group called “WE ARE VERO.” This awesome group promotes and supports local businesses and brings community awareness to local nonprofits here in Indian River County. Every Wednesday, fifty to sixty business minded people meet for an incredible lunch hosted by the kindness and generosity of Regency Park, An Independent Living Senior Community. All proceeds from our luncheon are donated to the non-profits we support. Last month we had the honor of presenting a three-thousand-dollar donation to The Source at their annual “Night of Hope.”

Steve Glaser and his sister Julie King with sister and brother Elizabeth & David Moshier

Cookie and Ted Pankiecicz from Love of Paws

This month we had the pleasure of donating one thousand dollars to For The Love of Paws at their recent ribbon cutting of their new Fellsmere location. Many of our “WE ARE VERO” attendees have volunteered countless hours of their time to the nonprofits we so humbly support. If you have an interest in financially supporting our nonprofits, volunteering your time, or just wanting to attend one of our networking events, you can contact Steve Glaser at 954 261 0544 or by email at SG12855@ aol.com. If you are on Facebook, you can always leave a message on our page: WE ARE VERO. Let’s continue to work together to make our community a better place.

The Vero Beach Chamber Orchestra 10th anniversary season celebration

The Vero Beach Chamber Orchestra celebrates the culmination of its 10th anniversary season with a concert on Sunday, April 15, at 2:00pm in the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th Street, Vero Beach. A silent auction of art items will also take place during intermission. Admission is free; donations are encouraged. The final concert of the season will include Piano Concerto No. 2 by Camille Saint-Saens, featuring Dr. Marcos Daniel Flores at the piano. Flores was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He began his piano studies at the age of 16 with Rubén Malán and immediately entered the Bachelors Degree program in Music at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. There he studied piano performance with Luz N. Hutchinson. Flores earned his Master’s Degree in Piano Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Barry Snyder, and later earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University where he studied piano solo performance with Caio Pagano. Dr. Flores is the Director of Worship Arts at Christ by the Sea United Methodist Church in Vero Beach, where he lives with his wife Débora Flores and their two children Diana Fernanda and Marcus Aurelius.

A seven-foot grand piano will be brought in to the Performing Arts Center specifically for this performance through a partnership with Atlantic Music in Melbourne. Additional musical selections will include Pavane by Gabriel Fauré, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 1. A painted violin by local artist Suze Lavender and other artworks will be for sale in a silent auction during intermission. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Chamber Orchestra and its continued relationship with the Vero Beach High School Orchestral program. The Vero Beach Chamber Orchestra, directed by Colbert Page Howell, was formed to provide for the cultural enrichment of Indian River County by presenting two free concerts each year. The group is composed of an assortment of local musicians, ranging from high school students to seasoned professionals. For more information, please contact Ginger Lagemann, Publicist, at VBCOinformation@gmail.com, or visit www.verobeachchamberorchestra.org.

Care Net offers support with unplanned pregnancies A crisis pregnancy brings numerous life-altering problems, not only for the pregnant mother, but extended family. In many cases, the pregnant mom is alone with nowhere to turn for help. AN UNPLANNED PREGNANCY CAN BE FEARFUL AND LONELY Carolina came to Care Net faced with an unplanned pregnancy and uncertain about her future. Some suggested abortion so she could finish school and was now faced with a life decision. Through the support services Care Net offered, Carolina had a beautiful baby boy. She says, “They encouraged me and gave me hope during my pregnancy. I began to feel that I could accomplish this with their assistance. I always felt safe and knew they would walk alongside me during my struggles.” Carolina continued with ongoing peer counseling, regained hope for her future, then graduated with an Associates of Arts degree. Care Net is a non-profit 501c3 Christian organization that provides free services to women and families facing an unplanned pregnancy. Founded in 1984, the center has been supported entirely by the community, for the community!

Pat Sowley, Peer-Counselor with a client

Bambi Simigran, Director of Client Services (on right) is with a client, Treichell

Like Carolina, many are faced with financial straits and in need of the many support programs and material services offered, i.e. pregnancy test, maternity/ baby clothing and nursery supplies. Additional programs include Adoption Option Care, Post-Abortion Care, Parenting, Basic Infant Care, Men’s Mentoring, and Sexual Integrity. The Center’s atmosphere provides women a caring, compassionate, non-judgmental, and confidential safe place to empower them to make life-changing decisions. Clients are educated with accurate information regarding all options with ongoing support. Care Net serves 1,500 client visits annually as a volunteer-based organization with the majority of its services and programs facilitated through trained professionals with a heart to serve hurting women. Spanish and Creole peer counselors are also available. For more information or to tour the Center, call 772.569.7939 or e-mail info@carenetirc.org.

Adoption Option Care

Care Net’s Adoption Option Program helps women and men understand their options in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

CARING ♥ COMPASSSIONATE ♥ CONFIDENTIAL

The Adoption Option program begins with basic decision-making to weigh each client’s options and to make a personalized adoption plan based on what is important. In most cases funds are available for material needs of pregnant women who choose an adoption plan for their baby, including, but not limited to: clothing, housing, medical care, food, utilities, etc. Care Net recognizes adoption as one life-affirming alternative to abortion. Care Net Pregnancy Center of IRC is not an adoption agency but provides multiple agency referrals at the client’s request. You can help care for a mother by simply switching your license plate. To make the switch, go to http://myfloridaspecialtyplate.com/choose-life.html

"Care Net is a place where any mother can feel safe and secure because they will always be there to help women through some of the hardest decisions in life." -Ashley, Adoption client

Restaurant Review:

By Marcela DelSolar What can I possibly say about Carrabbas Italian Grill that you don’t already know? After all there is a Carrabbas in just about every city in the US. But they don’t have a proprietor like Tony Brown! A Michigan man who has made Florida his home in order to live his childhood dream, has now set his eyes on Vero Beach. With his enthusiasm for becoming an integral part in the community and creating a place for Italian food that is timeless, he is already feeding our fighting Indians and providing meals for our veterans! Did you know that Carrabbas has a brick oven for making homemade pizzas? Did you know that Carrabbas caters and offers in-home delivery? Recently, I joined some friends for lunch to celebrate Spring Break in Indian River County! Tony was on hand to make suggestions to ensure that we had an authentic Italian style dining experience. I have traveled extensively throughout Italy, and had not stepped foot into a Carrabbas for years so I was cautiously optimistic.

Photos by Scott Finney

As soon as the appetizers arrived, I was virtually transported back to the Amalfi Coast with the Tomato Caprese with Fresh Burrata. The mozzarella is creamy, the tomatoes are fresh, and the balsamic is perfectly drizzled. The Mussels in white wine lemon butter is served generously and the Prince Edward Island mussels are steamed in white wine, basil and a signature lemon butter sauce. Our final appetizer (we had four – don’t judge!) was the Zucchini Fritte, hand breaded, lightly fried and served with a roasted garlic aoli. I think I have found my new and healthier alternative to French fries!

Our four appetizers, those mentioned plus calamari!

I sampled a few of their popular entrees but I must say that the Chicken Bryan was my favorite! This dish is named after the town where Johnny Carrabba settled in Texas and began his restaurant adventure. The tender chicken breast is wood-fire grilled, topped with goat cheese and sundried tomatoes. If you’re looking for comfort food Italian style, order the spaghetti with meatballs or the shrimp Positano. You won’t be disappointed.

Chicken Bryan with penne Pomodoro sauce

The wine list is extensive and there is a great pairing for anything you choose to order. The Elouan is my new favorite Pinot Noir, and the Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio is always a great choice! We sampled two desserts today. The Mini-Cannoli of course! Italian feasting without a Cannoli would be a crime! And, since I love chocolate … I ordered their Sogno Di Chocolata “Chocolate Dream” which is a rich fudge brownie bathed in mousse and fresh whipped cream. I may have to have them deliver this to me daily! Sinfully, decadently, delicious! The open kitchen, friendly staff, great location, diverse menu, and personalized attention make this unlike any other “franchise” you will experience.

Shrimp Positano

I highly recommend keeping Carrabbas on speed-dial for both making a call ahead seating request and having dinner delivered on a rainy weekend! Mini-Cannolis

Love Doctors collect for chimps at Waldo’s

Lee, general manager of the wellknown “hang-out” Waldos Restaurant arranged that on Friday, Dec 8 The Love Docs did their show live, collecting new Teddy Bears and blankets to donate to Save the Chimps, the world’s largest chimp sanctuary, located in Ft Pierce, Florida. Over 250 retired chimpanzees now live in large family groups on 12 separate three-acre islands, where they receive three fresh meals daily, first-rate medical care, and a variety of activities in an enriched environment. “The Chimps, much like children, love to snuggle bears and blankies. Anyone who brings in a new or used item will be entered to win some really cool prizes” Olsen said.

Save the chimp people staff and volunteers were on hand as well as the Tito’s Vodka girls. Matt and Bruce Show followed Love docs for patron’s dancing pleasure. This was the first time back to Waldos for the Love Docs since 2014 when they used to do their toy drive marathon. Dr. Glenn went live on Facebook at 5:30 as he cuts the ribbon on the new Waldo’s men’s room.

ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES COUNCIL IS YOUR COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY

For many, the way out of poverty begins with a decision to live a new way. For others, an emergency has resulted in a no-way-out situation. But, for all who want to strive for economic self-sufficiency, the Economic Opportunities Council is here to help.

The Economic Opportunities Council of Indian River County (EOC) is a private, 501c(3) non-profit organization chartered in 1965 as part of the “War on Poverty” for the purpose of improving the lives of low-income individuals and families.

EOC is the official “Community Action Agency” for Indian River County. Today there are approximately 1,000 Community Action Agencies in the US and Puerto Rico. EOC’s mission is to transition at-risk individuals and families from poverty to self-sufficiency through agency programs and public/private partnerships. It is the organization’s vision to be a partner in the creation of a community wherein low-income individuals and families, especially at-risk populations, will have the opportunity to become educated, self-sufficient, im-

prove the conditions in which they live, and achieve their full potential. EOC is ending generational poverty one family at a time. EOC operates the Head Start early childhood education program and Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in Indian River and Okeechobee Counties, the Weatherization Assistance Program in Indian River, Okeechobee, Martin and St. Lucie Counties, and provides emergency assistance and the REACH Family Self-Sufficiency Program in Indian River County.

Cathy Woolsey (TShirt Cathy)

Donations and volunteers are encouraged. Although EOC receives government funding, the funding is not adequate to fully meet needs in the community, and a 20% local match is required. For more information, or to make a donation, visit www.eocofirc.net or contact Nancy McCurry, Development Director at 772562-4177 Ext. 1114.

The Lawn Legacy By Joe Pellegrino

One day I was driving when on the radio I heard the hosts talking about crazy things people do. A caller started to tell the host that a friend of his is so looney about his lawn that before people leave a party at his house he begins to rake the foot prints his guests left behind! Funny but this didn’t sound abnormal to me. The caller went on to say “Yeah my friend, Joe, sure loves his lawn!” Joe! Could they have been speaking about me? As the caller kept talking I realized, “I know that voice.” It was then it hit me, he was most definitely speaking about me. I don’t know about you but when I leave this earth I sure don’t want people just remembering me as the guy who truly loved his lawn! What a legacy! Think about it…. Right now what do you think you would be remembered for? Being a good husband, a good person or maybe just an insane sports fan? Know this. You WILL leave a legacy, good or bad. The choice is yours.

Maybe the legacy you have built is not something you are happy with. The great news is that today is an excellent day to begin to build a more positive legacy. Legacy lives long after you are gone so what are you waiting for? Start building a powerful legacy today. Remember: Life is God’s gift to you, the legacy you leave is your gift back to Him! Legacy is defined as anything handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor. Legacy Minded Men (LMM) asks the question, “What is your legacy?” and then helps men understand its importance. LMM’s mission is transforming lives by engaging, encouraging and equipping men to build a Christ-centered legacy. No man can change on his own. We believe he needs two things, the power of Christ and other strong, like minded men. For more information visit www. LegacyMindedMen.org or download The Legacy Minded Men App from the App Store or Google Play.

Legislative Update By Congressman Bill Posey

While the main stream media focuses on gridlock in Washington, progress has been made on some important and common sense solutions. I would like to share with you some of those accomplishments: Simplifying Tax Filings for Senior Citizens: I recently filed bipartisan legislation to direct the IRS to create a new 1040SR form, similar to the existing 1040EZ form, to streamline tax filing for seniors who don’t have complicated incomes. I testified before the House Ways and Means Committee about the need to provide seniors some relief in this area. I’m pleased to report that our plan was passed by Congress and signed into law. This legislation will help senior citizens 65 years or older when filing taxes if their incomes include Social Security benefits; distributions from qualified retirement plans, annuities, or other such deferred payment arrangements; interest and dividends; or capital gains and losses. Making the CFPB More Responsive: Everyday federal agencies create dozens of new regulations, many of which can be difficult to interpret. Some agencies such as the IRS generate advisory opinions to give better guidance on how to comply with regulations. However, one federal agency with

sweeping authority, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, refuses to offer this kind of guidance to businesses that ask for their help. I introduced bipartisan legislation which passed the House that will force the CFPB to provide written advisory opinions in response to inquiries on how to conform to their regulations. Funding for Estuary Program Advances: Last year I testified before both the House Budget and Appropriations Committees in support of the National Estuary Program (NEP) and the key role it plays in working with our communities to protect and preserve our natural treasures. As such, critical funding for the NEP was approved by the House, including funding for my bipartisan plan to reprioritize existing resources to make competitive awards available to estuaries on top of their base funding. Furthermore I worked to establish a new bipartisan Congressional Estuary Caucus to help educate Members and staff about the important role that our estuaries play.

Sports take Good News to Inmates Risk Takers for Christ is a Vero-based ministry that uses sports to reach prisoners and at-risk youth with the gospel. Rev. Dale Glading, who founded Risk Takers in 2011, has more than 30 years of prison ministry experience. Since 1987, Glading has ministered to an estimated 500,000 inmates in more than 500 different correctional institutions across North America and Africa. “Sports is an international language,” Glading said. “That’s why we take basketball, softball and power lifting teams into prisons. Studies show that 80% of prisoners won’t attend a chapel service or a Bible study, but they will gladly attend a sporting event at which the gospel is shared.” “95% of all prisoners are eventually released and 75% are re-arrested within four years,” Glading added. “But when an inmate makes a genuine profession of faith in Jesus Christ while he is incarcerated and joins a Bible-believing church after he is released, the recidivism rate

drops to as low as 10%. So, our ministry is not only saving souls, but also saving taxpayers money.” In 2012, Risk Takers for Christ launched an outreach to at-risk youth in Indian River County called the Living H2O Initiative. Risk Takers staff and volunteers visit area basketball courts on a weekly basis, competing with mostly minority youth from broken homes and dysfunctional families. They also offer the young men free water bottles and sports-themed gospel literature before inviting them to an indoor basketball program at First Baptist Church of Vero on Thursday evenings. In order to subsidize their prison trips and at-risk youth programs, Risk Takers is hosting its 2nd annual Old Hickory Golf Tournament at Sandridge Golf Club on Saturday, April 28th. The unique format includes replica golf balls from the 1920’s and a putting contest using hickory-shafted clubs. To help sponsor the event or register a foursome, please visit www.risktakersforchrist.org or call 772.539.1826.

Mardi Gras Celebration Raises $186,000 for We Care Foundation of Indian River The essence of New Orleans filled Oak Harbor Club on Saturday, February 17 at the We Care Mardi Gras Celebration presented by Your South Florida BMW Centers, which raised $186,000 to provide funds for We Care Program and We Care Clinic non-physician ancillary medical or medically related needs for We Care patients. Guests enjoyed New Orleans cuisine, casino games, and a silent auction while dancing to the sounds of DJ Louie G! Phoebe’s Samba Team wowed guests with their quick moves, and Dr. Dennis Saver’s Live Ask raised $5,000 for We Care.

Widows’ Talk by Susan Harris

What do you do when your other half is no longer there? Whether they passed quickly or slowly, whether you’ve lived in Indian River County for a long or short time, or been married for 5 years or 55, suddenly you are alone. And the silence is deafening. Someone told me that; “My ears would hear things differently and my eyes see things differently when I lost my husband.” I have to agree, and I think it’s the best advice I received. Suddenly I’m meeting other women who lost their husband 20 years ago, or when they were 30 or several months ago. Some have remarried, some have stayed single, some are somewhere in between but I’ve learned something from everyone. The ability to share stories and experiences has been comforting to me. Nancy Johnson has been a widow for 20 years and is well known in the area for her community involvement.

After speaking with her several times on the phone, I mentioned that we should put a group together so that widows could have a time and place to share. Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach at 2100 - 10th Ave., the new Assisted Living and Memory Care Community, graciously offered to host a free monthly Tea and Coffee hour (with delicious goodies) for widows. On the 3rd Friday of every month at 11:00 a.m., you are invited to sit down and meet some other ladies who are in the same situation you are in. Both Nancy and I believe that we can help each other by meeting and talking. We hope to see you there. We just ask for an RSVP. Please call Neal Roe at 772-5628491 and tell him you will be there. Bring a friend or make a friend, we welcome you! Licensed • Bonded • Insured

The Secret Lunch Lady Society Everybody has a jar, a dish, a drawer where you deposit the contents of your pockets at the end of the day.

What if the forgotten contents of that drawer could make a real difference in the lives of real people who live in Indian River County? What if the 35 cents change you received from a drive-thru burger joint could make the difference between a hot lunch and an “alternative” lunch for a kid who lives less than two miles from you. Well it can. The Secret Lunch Lady Society is a local charity created by Mary Lou Brown in Vero Beach to help pay off the overdue lunch accounts for children of working families in Indian River County, and when able they buy lunch for first responder families as a way to say thank you for their service. “The food service coordinators in Indian River County are true rock stars,” Brown said. “They are juggling the new Obama-era requirements mandated by the federal government with the taste buds of our children. Not an easy task. It’s the proverbial rock and a hard place, and they do an amazing job using literally pennies.” But what happens when those who don’t qualify for a free lunch can’t pay their lunch bill? The school

Secret Lunch Lady Society business partner Beth Ann Rardin of Rardin Real Estate, Principal Diane Fannin, Mary Lou Brown, and Cafeteria Manager Clyde Schrawder

board gets stuck absorbing costs at the end of the school year, and that diverts money from the general fund, away from classroom supplies and other school needs. So with hairnets firmly in place and red capes billowing behind, the Secret Lunch Lady Society matches the needs of each school with willing donors. Sometimes entire school balances can be wiped out by donations of less than $100. Since its inception in December of 2017, the Secret Lunch Lady Society has helped pay off debt at Sebastian Elementary, Sebastian Middle School, Vero Beach High School, Gifford Middle, Vero Beach Freshman Learning Center, Beachland Elementary, Rosewood Magnet, Osceola Magnet, Glendale Elementary and the Indian River Academy. Donations may be sent via Paypal or credit card at www.secretlunchladysociety.org or at PO Box 643173, Vero Beach, FL 32964.
