Dear Readers, Thank you for reading the City Guide of Sebastian & Vero Beach. We hope you find it interesting, and that you choose to support our local businesses that advertise within. We thank you for helping to make Indian River County more vibrant and economically healthy by doing so. Enjoy our content and back issues at www.cityguidesvb.com and visit us on our Facebook pages as well! You may notice that many of our articles bring attention to local not-for-profit organizations in our community. I am grateful that so many of us can share our blessings with these very worthy causes. We welcome back our beloved “snowbirds” who boost our local charity support and our economy.

We are very blessed to live in our community, and especially blessed to have narrowly avoided major hurricane damage for a second year in a row, with both Matthew and Irma turning away just in time. Our local economy is flourishing, with real estate up 15% over the past year and a number of new businesses opening this year, several of which advertise in City Guide. If you are interested in advertising, please know that we print 12,000 copies that are delivered by the U. S. Postal service to the doors of local residents and businesses, and are also available at many key locations countywide. Enjoy the issue! David Moshier, Publisher 772-925-4154

McKee Botanical Garden will showcase It’s A Jungle Out There! beginning on November 4 and continuing through April 29, 2018. This impressive collection stems from a passion for Africa, its people and wildlife and is reminiscent of the days of the original McKee Jungle Gardens when an elephant, chimpanzees, alligators, and a bear, found a home among the 80-acre tropical hammock and engaged with visitors wandering the lush jungle trails. While no actual live animals are included in the exhibition, guests will still enjoy that “jungle-like” experience as they encounter various life-sized replicas of these jungle dwellers tucked within the Garden. As part of the exhibition, McKee will highlight over 14 different species of plants and trees currently in the Garden that are native to Africa such as the “Lions Tail” Leonotis nepetifolia, “Sausage Tree” Kigelia Africana, and the “Bread Tree” Encephalartos, just to name a few. This amazing exhibition features 24 beautiful African sculptures hand-crafted specifically for McKee and will be on display throughout the Garden in 17 different locations. Nestled among

the towering palm trees is a 16 ft. giraffe foraging silently on the leaves high above in the jungle canopy. Two playful and mischievous young elephants prove that big hearts come in small packages, while the matriarch elephant is nearby watching them closely. Elsewhere in the Garden, a 5 ½ ft. gorilla crouches in the underbrush pondering her surroundings as she watches her human companions pass by her hiding place along the Main Jungle Trail. Perhaps she’s looking out for the charging rhinoceros preparing to rush past. This is one animal not to be tangled with – sculpted at 7 ft. tall and 13 ft. long, he is fierce with his detailed armor and remarkable horn. Meanwhile, a magnificent hippopotamus, sculpted life size at 5 ft. tall and 9 ft. long, basks beside a pond. But don’t get too close! There’s a lot of power behind those kind eyes… Other animal friends hiding along the Garden pathways are a lion and lioness, a zebra, crocodiles, owls, peacocks, cranes and an eagle preparing to spread his wings and fly. Using reclaimed materials discarded from the car industry and other sources, a group of 19 African artists from The Ark Collective, ranging in age from 22 to 42 years old, created this collection exclusively for McKee. Head artist Moses Ochieng is committed to training young artists and giving them a lifelong creative skill. The artists are recruited from disadvantaged, impoverished backgrounds,

providing them with employment and apprenticeships to empower them to be self-sustaining, productive members of their communities. As paid apprentices, these young artists are taught valuable skills such as design, metal cutting, welding, painting and molding. Most of the artists come from the Luo community and are known for their metal works, while a few are from the Kamba community known for their carving skills.

Artists: Joseph Kasyoki, Paul Lema, George Matinde, Jonathan Musyoka, Collins Ochieng, Joseph Ochieng, Kennedy Ochieng, Moses Ochieng, Joseph Odhiambo, Stephen Oduor, Jospeph Okan, William Onyango, Caleb Onyango, Dennis Omondi, William Omandi, Julius Omondi, Frederick Otieno, Vincent Otieno, and Erick Otieno.

This project is sponsored in part by the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and the State of Florida (Section286.25, Florida Statutes).

About McKee Botanical Garden In 1932, Arthur G. McKee and Waldo E. Sexton opened McKee Jungle Gardens on an 80-acre tropical hammock in Vero Beach, Florida. The two land developers employed landscape architect William Lyman Phillips, from the esteemed firm of Frederick Law Olmsted, to design the basic infrastructure of streams, ponds and trails while they focused their efforts on assembling an outstanding collection of waterlilies and orchids, before augmenting native vegetation with ornamental plants and exotic specimens from around the world. By the 1940s, more than 100,000 tourists were visiting the Gardens each year, deeming them one of Florida’s earliest and most popular natural attractions. In the early 1970s, the development of I-95 and competition from large-scale attractions caused attendance to decline. By 1976, the Gardens were forced to close, and the property was sold and zoned for development. All but 18 acres were developed into condominiums while the remaining land lay dormant for twenty years. In 1994, the Indian River Land Trust launched a fundraising campaign and successfully purchased the property. $9 million was raised to purchase, stabilize and restore the Garden, and in November 2001 a formal dedication ceremony was held for McKee Botanical Garden.

With a renewed focus on native horticulture, the Garden remains true to its jungle heritage, featuring 10,000 native and tropical plants as well as one of the area’s largest collections of waterlilies. The Hall of Giants and Spanish Kitchen, historic to the Garden, were both meticulously restored to Sexton’s original vision, and in 2002 the United States’ first permitted bamboo structure was built on site. McKee is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and endorsed by The Garden Conservancy as a project of national significance. Although much has changed since the early days, McKee Botanical Garden remains committed to preserving the legacy established by McKee and Sexton, and providing its visitors with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world. McKee Botanical Garden is located at 350 US Highway 1, Vero Beach, FL 32962. 772-794-0601. www.mckeegarden.org.

Fighting the good fight of faith It seemed like just yesterday when Jermey Gable, Program Director at Camp Haven received the horrifying news that he had adenocarcinoma. Two to four months to live was the life expectancy, should he decide not to take chemotherapy. “It changed my perspective... I saw my life flash before my very eyes. I took mental pictures of my wife and kids and was scared for them, scared what would happen to them if God took me,” Jermey said. “I knew that time was not on my side, so I had to make a choice: whether to fight to live or give up and die. I chose to live.”

The second diagnosis Then the prayers were answered. Jermey was re-diagnosed with b/cell lymphoma. “Compared to pancreatic cancer and liver cancer this is the best-case scenario – 70% of people who have this type of lymphoma respond very well to treatments. And Jermey with your age, you’ll do fine,” explained Dr. Celeste Bello, a hematologist/oncologist at Moffitt Cancer Center as she reviewed the PET scan and other pathology reports. This past summer, Dr. Bello went over what the next six months would look like as far as treatment, and additional testing goes. Many days have passed since the second diagnosis in June, and the family’s faith is stronger today than ever.

Chemo treatments His wife Brenda Sposato, Director of Public Relations at the Women’s Refuge says the side effects have increased, nausea, dizziness, mood swings, and headaches are part of Jermey’s everyday life. “This one thing I know, he’s not giving up. He may feel like it at times, but he’ll fight until the end,” She says. It’s been weeks since his first chemo treatment. So far, he’s completed four infusions. “We thank God, his doctor reported the treatments are working! The most recent PET scan results came back positive and as of today he is cancer free,” his wife Brenda said. We are so grateful to the community for their generous support and prayers troughout this trying time.“Together as a family, we fight the good fight of faith.”

Restaurant Review: The Green Marlin Restaurant and Raw Bar Fresh and family-friendly seafood and more By Marcela DelSolar

Photos by Scott Finney

The Green Marlin is just what Vero needed, an unpretentious, fresh fine dining experience at prices that serve our locals! My journey began where the Raw Bar meets the Sushi Bar with a dozen fresh and seductive Sushi-style oysters, drizzled with a wasabi aioli and served with a seaweed salad. By far, the most exciting oysters I have ever experienced. I love sushi, and I love oysters. Combining the two is just brilliant! Next up, the Ahi Tuna Bomb, a sushi style appetizer with the Green Marlin touch. A hint of basil, marinated in tahini, seared, flash fried just enough to give the outer layer a crunch, and drizzled with a siracha aioli. It is served with chopsticks and of course wasabi, because a tuna roll isn’t a tuna roll without wasabi!

Ahi Tuna Bomb

Table-side Clam Chowder

And finally, the clam chowder, which is poured over a large bowl of fresh clams right at your table. The word “chowder” comes from the latin word “calderia” which means to warm things. True to its origin and filled with chunks of fresh celery, carrots and red potatoes, this Marlin specialty has just the right “warm” kick to get the clams rockin’! Absolutely delicious! A meal in itself, if you ask me! To end this amazing culinary adventure, I ordered the Drunken Whiskey Cake, an over 21 dessert that is a scrumptious moist cake infused with Jameson Whiskey. Not for the kids! Although tonight’s feast was all about the seafood, there are plenty of choices on the menu that appeal to the meat lovers as well. Jerk Chicken, Wings, Guinness Beef Tenderloins, and many more that I will be sampling very soon!

It has an upscale tavern ambiance with rustic wooden shutters, eclectic lighting, a welcoming bar that will soon be serving late night Happy Hours, and a tempting salad bar that even includes dessert! I was so excited about my experience from dining and taking these notes, that I went back for more the following night with my husband. This town was ready for something new, something fresh and definitely something green! Welcome to the neighborhood Green Marlin. We are so happy you are here!

By interacting with young children, teen and adult events and in their every day work, the officers aim to plant the seeds of trust, friendship and security. One major tool for the Unit is their new traveling trailer which will be on locations several times a month. They held their ‘grand opening’ presentation of the trailer on August 22 at the Barber Street Sports Complex Park in Sebastian where families came out and enjoyed snow cones, popcorn, music and games. Here are some photos from the event.

“The Art Destination of the Treasure Coast”

galleries • shops • restaurants In 2007, there were only two art galleries downtown, Tiger Lily Studios and Gallery 14. In 2008, Lila Blakeslee along with MSVB, Cultural Council and a host of area businesses hosted a Spring Open House Stroll. It was so successful, that they launched an additional Summer Sizzler in August and a Holiday Stroll in December. New businesses appeared along with new galleries. A decision had to be made to change the Open House Stroll to the First Friday Gallery Stroll which also coincides with each gallery’s Opening Reception the first of every month. The collaboration of the galleries enabled a far reaching audience and

created a fabulous event in Vero Beach’s historic downtown. As more galleries moved in, the City Council designated the downtown as an official Arts District. This year, there will be eleven art galleries in the Arts District on and around 14th Ave. With the success of the First Friday Gallery Strolls, there was also a need for parking and safe transportation. A complimentary Trolley sponsored by area businesses and restaurants will provide easy access and transport to the galleries and restaurants on the First Friday Gallery Stroll evenings, October through April and run 5:00 pm till 9:00 pm.

Celebrating Sunshine Kids 2nd Annual Gala presented by Sunshine Physical Therapy to provide support funds for special needs children in Indian River County will be held On Saturday, November 11. Sunshine Physical Therapy Clinic was established in 1953 by a group of humanitarians who saw the need to help individuals of our community who were physically challenged. A year later, the Center was incorporated as a non-profit organization dedicated to helping mankind. This dedication remains our primary objective at Sunshine Physical Therapy Clinic. No one has been turned away because of race, creed, color, or inability to pay for needed treatment.

Alexzander Van Keulen

Alexzander, Nicholas Frazier and Trinity Garret

We are the only non-profit physical therapy clinic in Indian River County that provides rehabilitation services for children with autism and other developmental delays. Children receive physical, occupational and speech therapy regardless of ability to pay. The 2017 gala will feature a silent and live auction which consists of generous donations from local and national supporters. Our MC for the evening will be auctioneer Wesley Davis, and entertainment will include performers from the Storm Grove Sting Ray Chorus. The Bernard Egan Foundation is the presenting sponsor of the event that will benefit children with special needs whose families have no or inadequate insurance for physical, occupational and speech therapy. All proceeds go directly to the Sunshine Kids support fund. To reserve tickets, which will include wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres, call/text or email Betsy Craig at 772-562-6877, sunshinept@bellsouth.net Event Details: Bent Pine Golf Club, 6001 Clubhouse Drive, Vero Beach, FL 32967. 6:00-9:00 p.m. $75.00 per person. www.sunshinept.org
