A Little Rubber Duck and a Whole Lot of Health It’s happening again. On April 30, 2017,

Captain Hiram’s and the Indian River Lagoon will be invaded by ducks.

Thousands of little, yellow rubber ducks will be racing to shore and bringing hope to an entire county. Indian River County depends on these ducks because they represent a community-wide effort to make healthcare affordable for everyone. And did I mention the $1,000 cash prize? Adding to the excitement of rallying with your closest friends and neighbors for an admirable cause, Treasure Coast Community Health (TCCH) is going to make a few lucky duck owners very happy. You see, every one of these ducks means money going to support Indian River County residents who struggle to pay for doctor visits, including children with tooth decay, mothers with breast cancer and uncles with diabetes.

And every one of these ducks is also a chance for you to win. The prizes are $1,000 for first place and $500 and $250 respectively for second and third place. But rest assured, you’ll have your chance to go home that day with a little something extra ... on top of that awesome feeling you get from helping improve the quality of life in your community. Last year, TCCH raised $21,000 that was earmarked specifically for their children’s medical programs. “We hope to double that amount this year,” says Colette Heid, Communications Director at TCCH. But frankly, why not triple it?

Why shouldn’t there be 8,000 ducks scrambling for shore in April? Think of what $63,000 could do for the families TCCH brings hope to each day. And think of how easy it is for you and me to accomplish... Do the math with me. There are 142,000 residents in Indian River County. If just 10 percent – just 14,000 residents – purchased a single duck for $5, TCCH would raise $70,000 for hopeful families.

For some, $5 is tough to spare. I get that. But for others, $5 is just another daily pit-stop for coffee. If you could forgo some of life’s creature comforts for one week, and buy a few ducks instead, you could truly help improve the lives of those around you. For those struggling to make ends meet, these ducks represent assurance. And that’s exactly what TCCH delivers every single day: assurance of Healthcare for All People. TCCH provides top-quality care to 17,000 patients each year. TCCH has six locations throughout Indian River including one of it’s newest medical office at the River Walk Shopping Center in Sebastian.

TCCH is a non-profit health care facility that provides primary medical, dental and behavioral health services to all regardless of ability to pay. Sliding fee discounts may be available for patients with limited resources. There are always ways to get involved, always ways to make your community the best it can be. But when is it as easy as buying a couple rubber ducks? Ducks can be “adopted” at various locations around Indian River County, including Oculina Bank branches, Vero Bowl, Harbor Community Bank, Vero’s Voice, Historic Dodgertown, Sebastian Chamber of Commerce and by visiting www. TheGreatDuckDerby.com. The event happens on April 30, 2017 at Captain Hiram’s in Sebastian from 12 am till 4 pm. The ducks go in the water at 2 pm. Finally, you need not be present to win, but you won’t want to miss out on the live band, fun family activities and an opportunity to connect with your neighbors including TCCH staff, patients, sponsors and fellow supporters. It’s your community. Go adopt some ducks and spread the good word.

The Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation The Mardy Fish Children’s Foundation was created to provide opportunity for children in our community, using the tennis court as our classroom. The MFCF works in partnership with the Indian River County School District to bring after school and summer time enrichment programs to our children. All of our affiliated programs are based on teaching and reinforcing “Mardy’s Six Healthy Habits” (Eat healthy, Get sleep, Drink lots of water, Brush and Floss, Exercise Daily, and Make Friends).

We offer programs in 13 Indian River County Elementary Schools, and partner with GYAC, Dasie Hope Center, and IR Homeschoolers Association. Middle school aged participants compete against fellow students in our Middle School Club Tennis League, with teams representing Oslo Middle, Storm Grove Middle, Sebastian River Middle, Gifford Middle, Saint Edwards School, Master’s Academy, Imagine of South Vero, and IR Homeschool Association. The MFCF partners with local tennis clubs to provide the children exceptional quality instruction at wonderful facilities. The MFCF is grateful to the generosity of these clubs for their

commitment to our youth: The Boulevard Tennis Club, Grand Harbor Tennis Club, Vero Beach Tennis Club, and Hidden Palms Tennis Club. The MFCF has recently acquired the scholarship responsibilities initiated by the Indian River Tennis Foundation to help fund aspiring student athletes pursue their dreams. Local High School students may also work with us to earn their community hours and gain valuable experience and leadership skills. MFCF is not only tennis. In addition to our on court programs, we offer grant funding to local elementary schools for enrichment programs such as track teams, garden clubs, dance and cheerleading teams, and other activities that help to encourage reinforcement of a health lifestyle and Mardy’s Six Healthy Habits. Please help a child find their EXTRAORDINARY! Support the MFCF today! Text “FISH” to 95577 to donate.

Restaurant Review:

Cajun Cove - New Orleans in Vero Beach By Marcela DelSolar

Photos by Scott Finney

Dinner at Cajun Cove was “The Big Easy”. The Unique Menu has to be tasted “Bayou”. New Orleans is best known as one of the culinary capitals of the U.S. The cuisine reflects the combination of its Cajun, Creole, and French roots. The great news is that we don’t have to travel to enjoy these iconic flavors because CAJUN COVE has delivered this right to our doorstep. In addition to the elegant yet jazzy feel, with black table cloths, open kitchen, and colorful Crescent City paintings identified by the various streets and neighborhoods that make New Orleans the place where we “Laissez les bons temps rouler” (let the good times roll), the menu offerings showcase a wonderful sampling of its Cajun influences. Tonight, I did something I rarely do when I dine out. I ordered more food than I could eat! To start, I sampled the Fried Green Tomatoes served over Cajun Grits with a balsamic drizzle. The combination intrigued me. Not only was the appetizer portion incredibly generous (easily shared by two), the combination of the sweet, earthy and spicy was Cajun comfort at its best! On second thought, Fried Green Tomatoes and Cajun Grits I may not share! For the entrée, I could not decide so I ordered two! One cannot dine a-la-N’awlins without trying the Etoufee! The stakes were high as I have eaten quite a bit of Etoufee on Bourbon Street. This did not disappoint! You pick the protein and they serve it smothered over a steaming bed of rice with Cajun-style vegetables. Next came Etoufee with Chicken and Steamy Rice the “WOW Seafood Louisiana” and it was most certainly WOW! Shrimp, scallops, andouille, bell peppers and sliced mushrooms, sautéed in a Cajun cream sauce and tossed with pasta. At this point, I was tempted to cancel the dessert order as I had consumed more food than I am accostumed to. However, our server insisted that I at least taste one bite of the Bourbon Bread Pudding! One taste? Impossible! It was more like one taste after another until this classic New Orleans dessert was no more … until the next time! And there will most New Orleans Bread Pudding certainly be a next time! with Bourbon Sauce

Sebastian Exchange Club Foundation’s

24th Annual 2017 Blue Water Open

It’s that time of year again to dust off those rods and reels and get ready to “Hook a Fish, Help a Child”. This has been our tournaments motto for many years. We, at the Exchange Club, are all about the prevention of child abuse as well as supporting many area youth services and organizations. Some of these groups include the Boys and Girls Clubs of Indian River County, Youth Guidance, CASTLE, Shiloh Youth Ranch, Sebastian Youth Soccer, Sebastian River High School Crew… the list goes on and on! This is our 24th year of our tournament and in that time we have raised over $400,000. All of which has gone back to the community and the causes we support. This year’s Tournament will be held on June 3rd at Captain Hiram’s Resort on Indian River Drive in Sebastian. On June 2nd , we have our Captains Party and Meeting starting with registration at 5pm and the meeting at 6pm. This, aside from the actual tournament, is a great party. There will be all kinds of raffles happening, live auctions and drawings. We have an awesome t-shirt design for this year’s tournament which will also

be available for purchase. On Saturday the 3rd, the day of the tournament, fishing starts with lines in the water at 6am. The weigh in starts at 2pm with a cut off at 5pm. If you haven’t been to one of these exciting events, now is the time. Fishing is predicted to be fantastic this year. To see some of these fishermen bring in some of these monster fish is very exciting. They will be vying for a chance to win part of our “guaranteed” total of $17,000 purse! New this year is a category for the largest Triple Tail. It will be worth a $1000.00 prize. Some of the other categories include a Junior and Lady Angler as well as payouts for 1st thru 4th for the largest fish in the categories of Grouper, Wahoo, Kingfish and Dolphin. Along with additional prizes of $1000.00 for the biggest Amber Jack and the biggest Cobia. Don’t forget about our bonus board which pays $200.00 for the 10 spots that get bumped off the big board. So bring the kids, come on out to Captain Hiram’s on the 2nd and 3rd of June for some great fun and a chance to support our causes.

You can visit us on the web at www.bluewateropen.com for further information.

Legislative Update

from Washington Congressman Bill Posey

It’s not all partisan gridlock in Washington. In fact, we have already made significant progress this Congress: Creating Jobs: In January, the House of Representatives began using a process that empowers Congress to fight back against overregulation by bringing burdensome rules that hurt job creation for an up or down vote. Many of these regulations were rammed-through in the final days of the Obama Administration. With my support legislation has been passed to repeal over a dozen costly regulations, and the President has already signed some into law.

Accountability: To stop the revolving door between Congress and lobbying firms, I introduced legislation banning Members of Congress from lobbying for five years after leaving office and eliminating their federal benefits if they choose to pursue a lobbying career. My bill also applies restrictions to senior congressional staff. Also, I passed an amendment requiring all legislation to use comparative print format to make it easier to read bills and see where they change existing law. My amendment instructs lawmakers, when writing legislation, to print and strike through the parts of federal code their bill alters so the public can compare current law with the proposed changes.

Supporting Our Lagoon: For years Congress has worked in bipartisan fashion to protect our many unique estuaries. To help further those efforts, I recently founded a new bipartisan congressional caucus to give estuaries like our lagoon a stronger presence in Congress. This new caucus will help educate our leaders on the important role that estuaries play.

Supporting Our Troops: With my support the House approved a 2.1 percent pay increase for our troops along with funding for our national defense. Our soldiers should have all the tools they need to complete their mission and return home safely.

If my office can ever be of assistance, please do not hesitate to call 321632-1776.

The Connections Center is OPEN. After two years of planning with community members, providers and funders, the Mental Health Collaborative just launched its newest program, The Connections Center. The Connections Center is the community hub for information on all programs and services in Indian River County. Although we are focused on mental health and sobriety, we can also assist with primary care, transportation, housing and food needs. We know we cannot solve every problem, but will do whatever we can to assist the residents of Indian River County. Located at 2345 14th avenue, Suite #4, (772) 217-3663, the Connections Center Team is available MondayFriday 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM. The Connections Center Team includes: Yesi is a Financial Specialist. She will ensure that people whom have insurance understand their co-pays, deductibles and which providers are in-network. If a person does not have insurance she will help determine what programs they may qualify for and assist in applying for benefits. Patty is a Clinical Specialist. She will help people determine what programs and services in the community would

improve their mental health and thus their quality of life. Khandis is a Resource Specialist. She is a 211 employee. She is our resident expert on community programs and services. As part of the team, she will ensure we are current and connected with the community providers. Brett is the Executive Director. He is responsible for program development and assists the team. Please stop by or call the Connections Center if you or a loved one could benefit from the any of the services available in our community but are unsure on how to get started.
