PERMANENT MEMORIAL: A LOOK AHEAD
The Town of Surfside is working on preparations for a permanent memorial at 88th Street that will serve as an enduring space of remembrance honoring the 98 souls lost in the June 2021 collapse. The Town has created a Memorial Committee comprised of family relatives to help guide the process. At the committees request, the Town will soon be launching an RFP for Professional Landscape Services in order to solicit proposals for a memorial park design. Updates will be shared through Town communications channels once the process is underway. We look forward to a solemn and beautiful space where relatives and the entire Surfside community can find solace.

This month, I encourage all to unite in a spirit of inclusiveness and acceptance, recognizing the strength that lies in our diversity. Together, we can create a community that embraces every individual, celebrating their unique backgrounds and experiences. ANNUAL HAZARDOUS WASTE DROP OFF EVENT
From Public Works — The Public Works Department recently held its annual Town-Wide Hazardous Household Waste Collection Event led by the Public Works Coordinator Frantza Duval. This exclusive, resident-only collection event was for household items such as old drain cleaner, glass cleaner, used motor oils, fertilizers, fluorescent lightbulbs and used batteries. Centralized and accessible hazardous items collection significantly reduces the probability of toxic waste being disposed into our Municipal Stormwater System.
Thank you to all the residents that participated in our annual event. The Town of Surfside remains committed to providing services to residents that help keep our environment clean. Remember that batteries and electronics are collected yearround at Town Hall and please do not dispose of hazardous materials (i.e paint, chemicals, and biohazardous) in the regular trash.

News From Town Hall
IT’S SUMMER (AND MOSQUITO) TIME!
From Code Compliance — During summertime, we experience an increase in temperature and lots of rain, contributing to mosquito breeding. Aside from being a nuisance, bites from infected mosquitoes can spread different diseases. Here are some tips to help you and the community to be protected.
• Get rid of standing water in and around your home or your business. Make sure to drain water from house gutters, trash cans, pet bowls, flower pots, or any other container where water has accumulated.
• Properly discard any item, such as old tires, bottles, containers, or toys, that are not being used. These items can collect water, creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
• If you have bromeliads as part of your landscape, flush the water out of your plants since they can hold water between their leaves.
• Ensure your pool’s chemical balance is correct, and drain plastic swimming pools when not in use.
• Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk. Cover your skin with clothing and apply mosquito repellent if you are out during this time.
Please report any neglected pool or any other accumulation of standing water to the Town’s Code Compliance Division at 305-861-4863, ext. 233. You can also report any mosquito nuisance areas to Miami-Dade County by dialing 311.
HURRICANE SEASON STARTS JUNE 1

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE A SEA TURTLE
If you observe an adult sea turtle or hatchling sea turtle on the beach, please adhere to the following rules and guidelines:
1. It is normal for sea turtles to be crawling on the beach on summer nights. DO NOT report normal crawling or nesting (digging or laying eggs) to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission unless the turtle is in a dangerous situation or has wandered off the beach. (on a road, in parking lot, etc.)
2. Stay away from crawling or nesting sea turtles. Although the urge to observe closely will be great, please resist. Nesting is a critical stage in the sea turtle’s life cycle. Please leave them undisturbed.
3. DO REPORT all stranded (dead or injured) turtles to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
NEVER handle hatchling sea turtles. If you observe hatchlings wandering away from the ocean or on the beach, call: 1-888-404-FWCC or *FWC (Mobile)
