I wanted him to speak Italian, I knew that would be a triumph for me and for Italy. But the question was “who with?” So my wonderful friend Stefania Spampinato and I created another character, DeLuca’s sister, to enable the scenes in Italian.

I was fortunate that I had more than six months to make the transformation in a number of ways. The greatest challenge was probably the physical aspect: of Diabolik. I learned how to throw knives, read the comic books and watched hours and hours of documentaries about panthers, the animal that inspired the Diabolik character.

I was familiar with him, but frankly I wasn’t one of those massive fans with the whole collection of comics. I only had one copy on my bookshelves when the

Volevo che parlasse italiano, sapevo che sarebbe stata una grande vittoria, per me e per l’Italia. Ma la domanda era “con chi?”. Così, con la mia cara amica Stefania Spampinato, abbiamo creato un personaggio, la sorella di DeLuca, con cui dare vita alle scene in italiano.

Ho avuto la fortuna di avere più di sette mesi per curare la trasformazione sotto vari aspetti. La più impegnativa è stata forse quella che ha riguardato il corpo: era fondamentale creare la sagoma perfetta e iconica di Diabolik. Ho imparato a lanciare coltelli, letto i fumetti e guardato ore e ore di documentari sulle pantere, l’animale a cui il personaggio di Diabolik è ispirato.

Lo conoscevo bene, ma onestamente non ero uno di quei grandi appassionati con la collezione completa dei fumetti. Avevo solo una copia nella mia libreria quando i fratelli Manetti mi hanno chiamato per la prima volta.

Da una parte c’è una responsabilità grande e costante, che tutti abbiamo sentito, attori, scrittori, registi, produttori… Dall’altra parte, però, c’è una grande Diabolik, nessuno l’ha mai visto camminare cogliendo i suoi movimenti o i suoi dei suoni passi, e questo apre un mondo pieno di possibilità che è stato bellissimo esplorare insieme ai registi.

La maggior parte delle mie scene sono state con Miriam. Siamo subito andati d’accordo. Entrambi volevamo fare un lavoro eccezionale, qualcosa di cui le un sensibile cambio di marcia: le giornate con lui sono sempre piene di risate, non è facile essere Diabolik quando c’è in giro Valerio!
