Multiple entertainment areas include a lounge, sunroom, and garden room. Three kitchens, plus a basement that includes store rooms, a workshop, and a coal cellar complete the home.

JAZZ & BLUES

RARE NAT KING COLE TRACKS

Continuing Capitol/UMe’s ongoing roll-out of rare tracks by Nat King Cole comes the highly anticipated From The Capitol Vaults (Vol. 4). This fourth digital-only collection features 14 timeless tracks, 12 of which are available for the first time on streaming platforms.

From The Capitol Vaults (Vol. 4) highlights Cole’s velvety smooth voice that is perfectly suited to some of the greatest love songs ever written, capturing him at his most engaging. From the dramatic and lilting “Little Child” (1951) to the charming romantic waltz of “You Will Never Grow Old” (1952), to the whimsical “The First Baseball Game” (1961), the fourth volume of From the Capitol Vaults shows a playful side of Cole’s music. The bossa nova and samba of “More and More of Your Amor” (1964) perfectly captures the steamy tropical vibes as we enter the dog days of summer.

Cole’s effervescent swing and moonlit balladry propelled him to the forefront of the most iconic performers ever to emerge from the jazz/pop sphere. An icon from the bygone Swing Era and Jazz Age, this volume is a great way to revisit and enjoy the Cole tracks that permeate our culture.

ORRIN EVANS OPENS RED DOOR

What’s behind The Red Door? For pianist Orrin Evans, that question has come to symbolize the daring path his life and music have taken over the course of his three-decade career. On his latest album via Smoke Sessions Records, he once again flings that door open, delighting in the collaborators, friends, inspiration, and history that he finds inside.

Looking back, Evans has opened that door time and again, always with fortuitous results. There was the decision to pursue a life in jazz, the initial red door that led to a series of others: summoning the courage to test his mettle in the notorious jam sessions at Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus in Philly; braving a move to New York with growing confidence but no sure prospects.

Many of the musicians who join Evans on The Red Door connect to those periods of discovery and growth. The album features two core bands: one the rhythm section of bass legend Buster Williams and veteran drummer Gene Jackson, joined by the late trumpet master Wallace Roney or Philly living legend Larry McKenna on tenor; the other a quintet with trumpeter Nicholas Payton, saxophonist/flutist Gary Thomas, bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith. In addition, the album features guest appearances by vocalists Jazzmeia Horn, Sy Smith, and Alita Moses.

Whether you caught a house party gig after Better Than Ezra formed in 1988 at Louisiana State University, heard “Good” on the radio once it hit #1 during 1995, became a fan following Taylor Swift’s famous cover of “Breathless” in 2010, or saw them headlining sheds in 2018, you most likely never forgot that initial introduction to the New Orleans quartet founded by Kevin Griffin [lead vocals, guitar, piano] and Tom Drummond [bass, backing vocals].

The Mets 2023 season may best be remembered for team owner Steve Cohen’s late June press conference. Cohen prefers to maintain a low-key image but was forced to call the press conference after his bumbling, $345 million-payroll team blew a 6-3 lead to the Phillies in Philadelphia. Their putrid bullpen gave up four runs in the eighth inning on just one hit. That comedy of errors reflected the Mets’ performance in the first half of the season.

BOWLING

Cohen understood the fans’ desire to see some folks get fired, but he figured it would be like putting a new captain on the Titanic after it hit the iceberg and was sinking. Cohen was worried about attracting top-tier talent to the Mets if he were to pink slip people at the first sign of trouble. He also expressed his desire to hire a president of baseball operations which certainly was not a vote of confidence for current general manager Billy Eppler. He also bashed the Mets previous ownership group, the Wilpon family, for failing to invest in the Mets minor league system, particularly in technology and scouting. “The Mets were always known for developing great pitching through their farm system. Why has that stopped?” he asked rhetorically.

The National League won its first All-Star Game since 2012 as they defeated the American League by a score of 3-2, thanks to a pinch-hit two-run homer by Colorado Rockies catcher Elias Diaz. While it is easy to poke fun at the MLB All-Star Game, it is still the best of any of the major sports. FOX Sports claims the game attracted over 7 million viewers.

For years, the NBA Summer League attracted the interest of only the most passionate hoops fans. After all, the games were played by rookies and castoffs hoping to attract the attention of NBA scouts. This year was a different story as ESPN and TNT drew record numbers because of the arrival of 7’5” French player Victor Wembanyama. There was certainly more interest in the NBA Draft, held at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, because of him. The

GET OUT AND WATCH THE PROS

Most fans enjoy Professional Bowling Association (PBA) tournaments on television, but as with other sports, there’s nothing like getting out and watching the action live and in person. Coming up are several PBA East regional tournaments.

If you feel like venturing upstate, there’s a popular one returning on September 22 through 24 at Kingpins Family Fun Center in South Glens Falls, located about an hour north of Albany.

The Kingpins Alley Family Fun Center RPI Open will featuretop pros from throughout the Eastern United States, as the name of the segment suggests. Other regional PBA East events include The PBA Bowlers Supply/Storm Open on August 4 through 6 in York, Pennsylvania, and The PBA 50 (formerly known as the seniors tour) Strike Zone open on September 1 through 3 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.

Recent PBA East action has seen such popular PBA pros as Alex Cavagnaro of Massapequa win the PBA Yankee Lanes Open on June 4 in Manchester, New Hampshire. The East tour has also seen legends such as Ryan Shafer and Walter Ray Williams Jr. take part, as well as area stars such as Ray Edwards and Timothy Regan take part.

For a complete list of PBA events, log on to PBA.com

NBA also got tons of unexpected free publicity for its Summer League when Britney Spears claimed a security guard on Wembanyama’s security detail hit her when she was trying to approach him in a Las Vegas hotel.

Kudos to Showtime for its three-part documentary, “Goliath,” which told the life story of the late Wilt Chamberlain. There is little doubt Chamberlain was the biggest star of the NBA’s first 25 years.

‘NATURAL’ BOWLING BALL CLEANING?

For years, we’ve asked the question: What exactly is in your favorite bowling ball cleaner or polish? Now, at least one brand fesses up: New to the market is Hammer Black Magic Bowling Ball Polish, which the company is touting as the first “natural” bowling ball polish.

From Hammer: “This revolutionary product polishes all performance-level balls and will not alter the peaks and valleys that make up the surface of the ball. Retains energy for increased down-lane motion.

Formula is Ultimate Black Magic reverse engineered using plant-based products.” In that light, consider: This polish is actually a USDA-certified biobased product (92 percent).

This new Black Magic Polish comes in an eight-ounce bottle and should be hitting area pro shops any moment now – as well as a new “clean” ball cleaner, Hammer Clear Magic. This marks the first and only bowling ball cleaner available in a convenient disolvable sheet. This plant-based cleaner, according to Hammer, provides “amazing cleaning power without harming the environment.”

Clear Magic reduces plastic waste by using refill sheets to eliminate single-use bottles. Bowlers can now quickly replenish this cleaner anywhere with a refill sheet and water. Refills are sold separately in three-sheet resealable packs.

Our verdict: For years, this column has asked “What exactly IS in bowling ball cleaner” to many companies, only to get no response. If these products are truly environmentally friendly, they’ll be our first choice in ball cleaning from this point on. Oh – and you should clean your ball after competition. Every time. Seriously.

must be envious of the success Amazon Prime is having streaming. “Thursday Night Football” will be showcasing those who play pro football’s most glamorous position, “Quarterback.” The lives of Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota on and off the field will be profiled.

He was a household name in an era when few sporting figures were pop culture figures the way movie, TV, and rock stars were. Chamberlain was a Republican who was friendly with Richard Nixon but was also active in the civil rights movement. And yes, he will always be remembered for his claim of bedding more than 20,000 women. To be fair, Wilt did everything big.

The New York Jets will be featured on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” for the first time since 2010. The scuttlebutt was no NFL team wanted the distraction of having HBO camera crews filming their every move during training camp. Interestingly, former Jets head coach, and current ESPN NFL analyst, Rex Ryan loved the national attention “Hard Knocks” gave him. He relished dropping F-bombs and other curses as a way of driving home a point to players. I doubt the current Jets head coach, Robert Saleh, will be nearly as entertaining.

The NFL has two new electronic media partners. The CW, which has gotten its sports feet wet broadcasting LIV Golf tournaments, will be the new home for “Inside The NFL” which moves from Showtime. It originally aired on HBO. Netflix

ESPN’s annual awards show, the ESPYs, got a three-hour airing on ABC last month. The strike by the Writers Guild of America forced ESPN to use a variety of presenters instead of a unifying master of ceremonies. ESPN’s most recent, and controversial talent acquisition, Pat McAfee handled the opening monolog deftly and displayed a quick ad-lib wit. ESPN CEO Jimmy Pitaro had to breathe a huge sigh of relief, especially coming off the recent well-publicized layoffs at the Worldwide Leader of Sports.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who suffered cardiac arrest during a January playoff games with the Cincinnati Bengals, teared up when presenting the Pat Tillman Award for Service ESPY.

ESPN also paid tribute to the late Jim Valvano who was a star athlete at Seaford High School, on the

30th anniversary of his passionate “Never give up!” speech at the 1993 ESPYs. Valvano was battling terminal cancer. His speech that night ranks just behind Lou Gehrig’s July 4, 1939 “Luckiest man in the world” speech at Yankee Stadium, as the most memorable by a sports figure in my opinion.

A rain delay did not stop America’s greatest athlete, Joey Chestnut, from winning the July 4th Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chestnut claimed his 16th Nathan’s Yellow Mustard Belt, which is the most prestigious championship in all of sports.

PENELOPE BOURBON

Penelope Bourbon is truly creating waves in a very big bourbon community!

Created with the vision of standing apart from the rest; Michael Paladini (CEO and Founder) sat down with us this summer and explained how the recent acquisition from MGP Ingredients hasn’t changed his mindset or long term goals for the company that was started by selling bottles out of the back of his trunk with his wife, Kerry! Having the incredible mindset on work with who you love and what you love; Penelope Bourbon was created by the impending birth of Michael and Kerry’s daughter; Penelope; who was born 2018! Years later, they are now the founding members of one of leaders in the bourbon world.

Getting that change to Penelope “Rio,I was blown away by just the smell that lingered across the table before it was even poured! Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the best smell to compare it to smell wise...and taste wise!

Yea this Straight Bourbon Whiskey is finished in Honey and Amburana Barrels! At 98 proof, it’s packed with cinnamon, graham cracker and vanilla! To say this may be one of the most unique bourbons I’ve evertasted would surely be an understatement! With plans to re-release Penelope Valencia (batch 2); there is no telling where the future will bring Michael and his incredible team over at Penelope!

Penelope Bourbon is located at 288 12th Ave, Roselle NJ 07203

The evening will begin with an on-site presentation by world-renowned English artist and designer Roger Dean, whose masterful artwork of striking other-worldly landscapes has graced classic album covers and posters, most prominently by YES and Asia. Every show will feature a Roger Dean gallery in the venue’s reception/foyer area

DELUXE WHO’S NEXT/LIFE HOUSE

The suite of songs by The Who on which, more than half a century ago, Pete Townshend foresaw the invention of the internet, of virtual reality and pandemic-style lockdown, is to be heard as he intended for the first time. UMR will release Who’s Next/Life House as a lavish, multi-format Super Deluxe edition on September 15th.

Featuring 155 tracks, of which 89 are previously unreleased and 57 feature fresh remixes, the set will delight longtime Who fans with its long-sought, complete picture of Townshend’s incredibly prescient songwriting, while captivating a new audience with his visionary description of a future that has, in many ways, come true. It features all of his songs, in their many stages of development, from the abandoned, audacious Life House project, started In 1969 as a follow-up to The Who’s epic Tommy, and from the undisputed rock classic of 1971 that it evolved into, Who’s Next.

The Super Deluxe edition of Who’s Next/Life House will contain 10 CDs, all remastered from the original tapes by longtime Who engineer Jon Astley, plus a Blu-ray Audio disc with newly-created Atmos & 5.1 surround mixes of Who’s Next and 14 bonus tracks by in-demand artist and producer Steven Wilson.

PETER FRAMPTON AT ROYAL ALBERT HALL

In November 2022, Grammywinning artist and virtuosic guitar player Peter Frampton performed at the historic Royal Albert Hall in London to a rapturous sold-out crowd. The special evening was filmed, capturing stunning performances of Frampton’s finest songs, and will be released as a live album on September 1 via Ume.

The record features 9 live performances with Frampton’s long-standing band of Rob Arthur, Adam Lester, Dan Wojciechowski and Steve Mackey, and includes tracks “Show Me the Way,” “Baby, I Love Your Way,” “Do You Feel Like We Do?” and more. The legendary performance is currently streaming on PBS as part of their Pledge Drive.

Additionally, Frampton is back on the road—the Never Say Never Tour kicked off last month, with stops nationwide through August.

Most recently, Frampton announced that on July 28 Intervention Records will release Frampton@50, a numbered limited-edition vinyl box set featuring Frampton’s essential 1972-1975 studio releases Wind of Change, Frampton’s Camel and Frampton.

Long Island’s melodic Pop Punk Band Gone Stereo broke out their new self-released single entitled Twin Pines and it’s catching on real fast. Twin Pines specifically features these harmonies throughout the song. The chorus features a double time drum beat usually heard in the genre.

Gone Stereo features members from Long Island legends Idle Vice and Wasted Time and are currently signed to Negative Progression Records. Their next song single, I’m So Sick is being released under Negative Progression Records this Fall. KAREN BELLA RELEASES NEW SINGLE

Karen Bella, New York-based, singer/songwriter, has rich, melodic songs that incorporate elements of folk, country, indie, rock, pop and a tinge of R&B. Bella describes her songwriting as “capturing her experiences and spirit.”

In March of 2020, her self-titled, six-song EP, produced by Josh Dion of Paris Monster, was released, then re-released in 2021, due to the Pandemic lockdown.

Her perseverance earned her a VIP audition for NBC’s The Voice, she was named a Sam Ash Music Store “Spotlight Artist,”(2019), an official Fishman endorsed artist (2019) a Yamaha Guitar Ambassador (2022) and an Elixir Strings Endorsed Artist (2022).

For the past few years, Bella has been working on a follow up project to her 2020 release. Her recent performance at the Bitter End is the start of new music being released - beginning with the first Single : RISE UP.

Produced by Josh Dion, the song discusses a heavy topic. Not giving up on your life. Connecting to your inner self - and your inner child to keep fighting, pushing through and to focus on hopewhere the light is.

The band features: Teddy Kumpel, Josh Dion, Brian Killeen & Patrick Firth. You can reach out to her at karenbellamusic@aol.com

SUZI QUATRO AND KT TUNSTALL

In the uplifting and honest “Truth As My Weapon,” Suzi Quatro and KT Tunstall reveal the softness behind their rock personas as they reflect together on the importance of truth. Sharing their experiences as women in rock together, the track is one of ten original songs written by the pair and recorded together in England. The song is the second single to be released from their upcoming Face to Face album.

Quatro brings her groundbreaking rock legacy to the project, and Tunstall brings her singersongwriter sensibilities. The natural collaboration between the two artists produces a folky, vulnerable and straight-to-the-point track, which reflects on their experiences as women in music and beyond. Featuring a theme of friendship, it’s fitting that in an age where many artists collaborate digitally in separate locations, Suzi and KT wrote and recorded their album together in England.

RITA ORA NEW ALBUM YOU & I

International critically acclaimed singersongwriter Rita Ora released her new album You & I via BMG. Threaded together to signify the different chapters of her relationship, You & I is a deeply personal body of work intrinsically linked to a new stage in Rita’s life and career and pays homage to her own eclectic tastes.

Throughout the album, Rita looks back with songs like “Girl in the Mirror,” an homage to her younger self, and “Notting Hill,” which hearkens back to her teenage years. “That Girl” features an interpolation of Eddie Murphy’s “Party All The Time” and speaks to Rita’s philosophy to have fun at every stage of life, while the defiant “Shape of Me” serves as a bittersweet ode to Rita’s relationship with her mother.

MOLLY BURCH NEW ALBUM DAYDREAMER

Molly Burch announced a new album Daydreamer due September 29th via Captured Tracks. The album announcement comes alongside her new single “Physical,” a dark and sultry ‘80s mid-tempo jam building off her reflective penmanship with open-hearted lyrics and gentle vocals.

“Physical” is the first song Burch and producer Jack Tatum (Wild Nothing) worked on together, setting the tone for the rest of the record’s sound. The track is about Burch’s public struggles with PMS, but the lyrics can easily resonate more broadly.

Renowned for her captivating vocals and vivid depictions of love and loss, Molly takes on a new

JOYRIDE was initially heralded by the first single and title track, “Joyride.” Equal parts thick bass, ethereal synths, disco-funk guitar, and silky, inviting vocals, the track – which features signature lead guitar from JOYRIDE co-producer Trey Anastasio – expertly captures Rykman’s jubilant brand of sonic exploration, bridging an array of genres to arrive at her own compelling and original take on psychedelic indie rock.

Originally released as a single in June 1983, preceding the album, ‘Another Perfect Day’, it feels fitting that this powerful live rendition from 2007 is aired in celebration of it’s 40th anniversary.

Recorded during the band’s ‘Kiss Of Death’ tour at the legendary Auditorium Stravinski on 7th July during the 2007 edition of the world renowned, Montreux Jazz Festival. This show is a tremendous statement of just how potent and perfect a trio Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee were, with not just one of the more diverse set-lists of their decades together, but individual performances which prove how top of the tree each was in their own class.

Motörhead, Live At The Montreux Jazz Festival ’07 will be released on double LP, double CD and digital. Visit www.iMotorhead.com for news and updates!

TYRA MADISON ‘PLEAD THE 5TH’

Country artist Tyra Madison has released her new single, “Plead The 5th.” The track is now available for streaming on all major platforms, allowing fans to experience Tyra’s vocals and storytelling abilities firsthand.

“Plead The 5th” highlights Tyra’s storytelling prowess as she portrays the role of a mistreated significant other who endured the lasting impact of a tumultuous relationship spanning three years. When confronted by the police about her husband’s whereabouts, Tyra skillfully exercises her right to remain silent, indicating her full awareness of the events surrounding his disappearance, or more accurately, the actions she took.“Plead The 5th” Tyra’s most recent single, “Right Girl Wrong Time,” has amassed millions of streams, further solidifying her rising star status. The music video for the song premiered exclusively on CMT.com, providing fans with an immersive visual experience.

ALT COUNTRY RENEGADE DALE WATSON

Starvation Box begins with the captivating title track, which Watson co-wrote with CMA award-winning songwriter Mike Henderson, of Chris Stapleton’s “Broken Halos” fame. The song rides a bluesy 12-string guitar riff backed by a sparse rhythm track that gives ample room for Watson’s leathery baritone voice.

As Watson explains, “Living in Marshall, TX, the area so influential to Lead Belly, I went down the Lead Belly rabbit hole. It led me to a 1957 Stella 12-string guitar just like the one Lead Belly had, which his father called a ‘starvation box.’ I knew I had to write that song as an ode to Lead Belly. What I wrote was ok but with Mike Henderson’s additions and of course, his slide guitar and harmonica, I think we came up with a fitting tribute that I hope people like.

There’s plenty more bluesy, folk and roots rock in store on Starvation Box, the album, including an ode to Elvis Presley’s mechanic, “Billy Strawn,” a fantastic cover of Percy Mayfield’s “Like A Stranger In My Own Hometown,” and the superb closer, a gospel rave-up called “Ain’t Nobody Everybody Loved.”

VICTORIA BAILEY

“FOREVER, YOU & I”

In Victoria Bailey’s songs, she carries us over an expansive emotional and musical terrain. We ride with her through the desolation of loss, over the rocky ledges of heartache, across the fields of blossoming wildflowers of new love, and along the plains of promise and newfound faith. Bailey’s vocals ring with an emotional purity that reverberates deeply. Like Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton, Bailey dwells in her songs, drawing out every note of emotion with her vocal phrasing and musical range.

Bailey is joined on A Cowgirl Rides On by some of LA’s best musicians. “I’m really proud of the players on this album,” says Bailey. “It gave me a lot of confidence to be in the room with these guys. It showed a lot on the record; we only did a couple of takes on each song.” She heard guitarist Brian Whelan (Jim Lauderdale, Dwight Yoakam) perform on a Merle Haggard tribute, and says she was drawn to him. “He’s a great producer,” says Bailey. Other players include Ted Russell Kamp (Shooter Jennings, Tanya Tucker) on bass; Philip Glenn (Show Ponies, Jason Hawk Harris) on fiddle, mandolin, and banjo; Jeremy Long (Sam Outlaw) on pedal steel and Dobro; and Leeann Skoda on background vocals.
