THEATER: HOLIDAY CHEER For sheer irreverent silliness and merriment, you can’t beat the new Broadway revival of “Spamalot.” Director/choreographer Josh Rhodes keeps the comic pacing at breakneck speed and A-list comedy masters – Michael Urie, Christopher Fitzgerald and Ethan Slater -- keep the audience in stitches. (St. James Theatre) https://spamalotthemusical.com/ Obie Award-winning playwright Branden JacobsJenkins makes his Broadway debut with the 2nd Stage’s new production of his 2014 off-Broadway play “Appropriate.” Sarah Paulson, returning to the New York stage after more than a decade, plays the eldest daughter of a recently deceased Southern patriarch whose family comes together at their Arkansas homestead to settle his estate, which becomes complicated by the discovery of unsettling keepsakes. Corey Stoll and Elle Fanning co-star under the direction of Lila Neugebauer. (Hayes Theatre) https://2st.com/shows/appropriate Joshua Harmon’s much-lauded Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award-winning play “Prayer for the French Republic” moves to Broadway after a successful run off-Broadway last year at the Manhattan Theatre Club. The intense, thought-provoking drama focuses on five generations of a Paris-based Jewish family as it deals with rising anti-Semitism in the present-day Paris (intercut with the story of their relatives in 1944-46 Paris) and whether they should stay or move to Israel. David Cromer directs the splendid cast, many from off-Broadway including award winners Francis Benhamou and Betsy Aidem. (Previews begin December 19) (Samuel J. Do My Show,” written by and starring “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s” Rachel Bloom, returns for a four-week run. BITS & PIECES BAND ON THE RUN 50TH ANNIVERSARY Fifty years to the week of its original release, MPL and UMe announce the expanded 50th anniversary edition of Paul McCartney & Wings’ iconic Band on the Run, due February 2nd, 2024. A fixture of all-time greatest album lists for decades, the multiple GRAMMY-winning #1 smash was originally released in December of 1973. Featuring the immortal title track, worldwide hit ‘Jet,’’ the wistful ‘Bluebird,’ long-time live staple ‘Let Me Roll It,’ the multi-faceted ‘Picasso’s Last Words (Drink to Me)’ and climactic closer ‘Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five,’ Band on the Run is undoubtedly Wings’ most successful and celebrated release ever. Experience the 50th anniversary edition of Band on the Run HERE. The 50th anniversary edition of Band on the Run will be available in a variety of formats, beginning with the essential 1LP. This special vinyl edition was cut at half speed using a high-resolution transfer of the original master tapes from 1973 by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, London. The single vinyl album configuration mirrors the US tracklist, which features the song ‘Helen Wheels’ and includes a Linda McCartney Polaroid poster. The 2LP vinyl edition features the original US album, remastered at half speed, and a second LP titled “Underdubbed” Mixes Edition, housed in a premium slipcase. The set also includes two Linda McCartney Polaroid posters. A 2CD format will feature the original US album, “underdubbed” mixes, and a doublesided fold-out Polaroid poster taken by Linda McCartney. Band on the Run (Underdubbed) will also be released digitally. TOM PETTY’S GRAND THEFT AUTO Today, Rockstar Games unveiled their highly anticipated first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI featuring Tom Petty’s “Love Is A Long Road,” from 1989’s Full Moon Fever, the iconic musician’s first solo album. After previously using Petty’s “Runnin’ Down A Dream” for GTA: San Andreas in 2004 (which Tom loved), the newest trailer from the series reveals a Petty easter egg in the form of a “Petty Forever” sticker using the color scheme from the Full Moon Fever album cover art. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive -with fans referencing the beauty of the song and the title marrying seamlessly into a number of themes: the street-level setting, Tom Petty’s native Florida, and of course, the long road of love SONIC YOUTH REISSUES LONG OUT-OF-PRINT BOOTLEG FROM 1986 Culled from three 1985 gigs in the UK during a transitional and transcendent time in the band’s story, Sonic Youth’s ‘Walls Have Ears’ appeared as a 2LP set in 1986, not just a live album but an artful tapestry full of live experimentation with songs, between-song tape segues, darkness, humor and audio verité on par with elements of side B of ‘Master Dik’ to come later. With a bit of complexity Photo by A.J. Barratt to the situation of the release itself. Deleted as quickly as it appeared, it’s now issued for the first time officially under the band’s auspices. In this 2LP set brimming with primitive classics like “The Burning Spear”, “I Love Her All The Time”, “Death Valley 69” and “I’m Insane” (uncredited on sleeve), segues and live guitar changes ooze together threaded by Madonna tapes and vocal loops off the board (somewhat a necessity for distraction until the band had a full fledged stage crew to prepare guitars). Claude Bessy (French punk raconteur who moved to LA for a period to co-found Slash Magazine and notoriously appeared in the Penelope Spheeris ‘Decline of Western Civilization’ documentary) humorously MC’s their intro to a October 30th ULU London gig with a lob at the indie label zeitgeist: vocally detailing how Rough Trade had come down on distributing the “Flower” 12” for sporting a xeroxed, nude female on the cover. The message was that music was reality, not manufactured subcultures, and Sonic Youth was there to present Britain with a healthy dose of it. The first two sides of ‘Walls’ are massive, cavernous, with newly-drafted drummer Steve Shelley in tow taking on past tunes and unveiling “Expressway To Yr Skull” in glorious form. They tear it up especially on one trash-fi excerpt of “Blood On Brighton Beach” (actually “Making the Nature Scene”) from a legendary outdoor gig November 8th where Moore, Gordon and Ranaldo’s guitars treble-blast dissonant shockwaves over the black-stoned beach of Quadrophenia fame.

BÉLA FLECK NEW ALBUM RHAPSODY The latest project from banjo great Béla Fleck expands and explores George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue by paying homage to the legendary composer while redefining an American classic—just in time for its centennial. Available February 12, a hundred years to the day Gershwin premiered the work at Aeolian Hall in New York City, Fleck’s Rhapsody in Blue album includes three variations: “Rhapsody in Blue(grass),” “Rhapsody in Blue(s),” and the classic orchestration, but with banjo featured instead of piano, performed by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Eric Jacobson. The set also features Gershwin’s “Rialto Ripples” and “Unidentified Piece for Banjo,” an unrecorded and unreleased gem discovered at the Library of Congress. Hear the inaugural recording of Gershwin’s “Unidentified Photo by Jeremy Cowart Piece for Banjo,” brought to Fleck by his friend Dr. Ryan Banagale, author of Arranging Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue, “It’s very much like a ragtime tune through a Gershwin lens, with a highly catchy melody and some surprising harmonic moves at the ends of phrases,” Fleck says. “He didn’t write out the harmony, but the implications seemed to point clearly towards ‘I Got Rhythm’ types of chords, though a little more quirky. To keep the authenticity of the piece, I played it on an old gut-string, five-string banjo.” Rhapsody in Blue will be available on LP, CD and streaming. SPORTS BEAT It is to be seen how successful a manager Carlos Mendoza will be, but he certainly displayed plenty of personality at his introductory press conference. Yes, he said the boilerplate stuff about the Mets’ enthusiastic fan base, as well as being impressed with the team’s culture. The word “accountability” was liberally thrown around, as it has been at every new manager/head coach hiring press confab since Adam & Eve. Both he, and new Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, said the Mets would be competitive for a playoff spot in 2024, but stopped short of saying they expected the Mets to dethrone the perennial NL East champions, the Atlanta Braves. Although he is technically a first-time manager, Carlos Mendoza was the Yankees bench coach the last four years, which meant he ran the team whenever Aaron Boone was thrown out of a game for arguing with an umpire. That was a frequent occurrence. Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said he had many conversations with his Yankees counterpart, Brian Cashman, about Mendoza. You can be certain Cashman reminded Stearns of the respectable job Mendoza did as Boone’s understudy. Kenny Albert, who grew up in Sands Point, has just written his autobiography appropriately titled “A Mic for All Seasons” (Triumph Books) since he does playby-play for every sport with the exceptions of golf and auto racing. While he is proud to have grown up in a broadcasting family, being the son of Marv, and nephew of Al and Steve Albert, Kenny only refers to them in passing. Having been a broadcaster for over 30 years, Kenny has earned the right to tell his own story. It is an interesting one, as he recounts his days calling the games of the American Hockey League’s Baltimore Skipjacks to his MSG work with the Knicks and Rangers to his lengthy association with FOX Sports calling NFL and MLB games. The best advice he gives to broadcasters is not to schedule a game the next day in another city if you are in Buffalo the previous day in the late fall, winter, or early spring. You can very well find yourself snowed in. Speaking of broadcasters, ESPN’s Hubie Brooks turned 90 in late September, and he is still going strong. He is planning to work a full slate of calling NBA games alongside Manhasset resident Mike Breen, who just inked a lucrative long-term contract with the Worldwide Leader Photo credit: Lloyd Carroll in Sports. A new Prime Video documentary, made in conjunction with NFL Films, “Bye Bye Barry,” sheds light on why Sanders walked away when he did. Although he does not cite one specific reason, Sanders does mention fears of incurring a life-altering injury. He was also tired of his Detroit Lions being an NFL also-ran, but he did not want to change teams through free agency. His father was a big fan of Cleveland Browns legend Jim Brown who also walked away from the game when he was at his playing peak.

By Lloyd Carroll “Bye Bye Barry” shows how Sanders was able to elude NFL tacklers in a miraculous manner. The documentary also includes interviews with many notable Lions fans including Eminem. NBA star Stephen Curry has followed in the steps of LeBron James as he has started an entertainment production company. His first feature, “Underrated,” debuted at the 2023 Sundance Festival, and recounts how top colleges overlooked him because they considered him too skinny and small. They also did not like Photo credit: Apple TV Plus the way he took an outside shot. Hence, the documentary’s title. Curry worked his butt off to lead Davidson University deep into the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament fifteen years ago. His terrific play got him noticed to the point where he was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2008 NBA Draft. The decision to join the NBA meant he had to leave Davidson before getting his degree. “Underrated” shows Curry using every rare minute of free time taking online classes and ends with him wearing a cap and gown at the 2022 Davidson commencement. “Underrated” is being shown on the streaming service Apple TV Plus. When it comes to endorsement deals, no sports figure has racked them up the way Shaquille O’Neal has. Shaq has reunited with Pepsi Cola for a commercial promoting the beverage manufacturer new “Mini” line of canned soft drinks. O’Neal gets to show off his rap skills as well as demonstrating yet again his superb sense of humor. Another charismatic athlete, WWE veteran John Cena, has cut down his ring appearances in recent years, as his attention has turned to doing voiceover work for Honda, appearing in films, and hosting an occasional reality show. The Roku Channel has just signed Cena to host an automobile-themed talk show titled “What Drives You.” It will be interesting to see whether Cena is influenced by Jerry Seinfeld’s old Netflix series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” or comedian Spike Feresten’s “Car Matchmaker” which aired on some of NBC’s cable outlets Photo credit: Prime Video from 2014 to 2016.
