On Saturday January 27 at 7 p.m., The Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame, Stony Brook, will host a screening of Jackie Martling’s Joke Man with Q&A with Jackie. Tickets for adults are $35 for the screening and the Q&A, which also includes admission to the entire Hall of Fame and Museum. Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling may just be America’s last great joke teller. His savantlike ability to remember every joke he’s heard since he was eight years old, combined with his lightning-fast wit and infectious laugh, helped establish him as a comedy icon. Famous for being the head writer of the Howard Stern show for 15 years and infamous for leaving that position. In this feature documentary we learn Jackie’s improbable story, from the fledgling days of comedy on Long Island, through his time as one of the “Beatles of Radio”, to his success as an author and actor. Willie Nelson, Penn Jillette, Billy West, Artie Lang, Marc Cuban, Sean Young and a bunch of former Stern show staffers give us their take on what makes him truly unique. https://www.limusichalloffame.org/museum/

LOST LONG ISLAND Long Island has an incredibly rich history that is often lost in local memory as each generation brings new residents amid an ever-changing landscape. Long Island was the home of some of the nation’s first professional auto races. Although farming still thrives in Suffolk County, there are only a few working farms left in Nassau County, where hundreds of farms dotted the landscape generations ago. Cold Spring Harbor, Greenport, Sag Harbor, and Southampton were once bustling centers of the American whaling industry and still honor that whaling heritage today. During the world wars, Long Island became a national leader in aircraft manufacturing with numerous companies, including the Grumman Corporation and the Republic Aviation Corporation. Author Richard Panchyk reveals fascinating narratives of Long Island’s lost history in his new, paperback, priced at: $24.99.

OVO-A CIRQUE DU SOLEIL SPECTACULAR Cirque du Soleil announced its return to UBS Arena, Belmont Park with its newly revisited high-energy and high-acrobatic production OVO. An exciting Cirque du Soleil experience, OVO is a colorful intrusion into a new day in the life of insects; a non-stop riot of energy and movement. Through show-stopping acrobatics highlighting the unique personalities and abilities of selected insect species, OVO explores the beauty of biodiversity in all its contrasts and vibrancy. OVO is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects’ home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye—and the feeling is mutual. OVO will perform at the UBS Arena from August 15-18th. Tickets for OVO are available at cirquedusoleil.com/ovo. Family friendly ticket pricing available – tickets can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com or in person at the venue box office.

MAHAVISHNU PROJECT AT MY FATHERS PLACE The Mahavishnu Project is back in action, this time to perform the entire “Birds of Fire” album, the 1973 classic of jazzrock fusion music, with new interpretations of the music of Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer in a bonus set of Beck’s “Wired” and “Blow By Blow” material, played in honor of the late/ great guitar hero. They will be performing at My Father’s Place in Roslyn on February 3rd. The Mahavishnu Project has become well-known for reaching into the jazz-rock repertoire beyond the John McLaughlin-led originals to include songs of Jeff Beck, featuring guitar virtuoso Robbie Mangano (Sean Lennon/ Tom Morello), keyboardist Neil Alexander (The Machine/ Eric Person) and bassist Brian Mooney, joining drummer and bandleader Gregg Bendian - well-known for his work with Todd Rundgren, Jan Hammer, Pat Metheny, Nels Cline and Ornette Coleman. THIS IS MY COLUMN THINGS THAT PISS ME OFF Wow, it’s been a while since I put up a column but this seems like the perfect time. I’m looking out the window at the snow, and as always it looks great on the landscape, just not when you have to drive in it. The reason I’m home writing this is that yesterday I received a call from my graphic artist, Sydney, asking if we could not come in today because of the upcoming snow storm. I hemmed and hawed, well, I said, it’s really not going to be very bad for travel. I wanted to remind her of the story of Chicken Little, but being the kind and benevolent boss that I am, I agreed to move production back. Then I called Nicholas, our marketing associate to let him know. Nick, being rough and ready, was more than willing to come in. But that’s not unexpected, Nick being a professional wrestler by trade who also types very fast and can do social media easily. We agreed he would come in Wednesday also. I thought about this, moving production back a day, and then I clicked my heels. YEAH!!! I don’t have to be a boss for another day. I felt like I was back in school and we had just been given a snow day. Now, on to the pissed...

NFL/PEACOCK RIPOFF OF MIAMI-KC GAME I am not a huge pro football fan I have to admit. I prefer college football but do enjoy watching the games on the weekend. Because of the Marx Brothers-like ongoings of the Jets and Giants, my loyalties are often elsewhere. However, this past weekend, I wished I was a betting man. I successfully picked the winners of the Chiefs, Tampa Bay, Lions and Packers games. I’m sure I would have done well on Fan Duel. I pick the teams I follow usually for two reasons. I like the quarterback, or they are mostly the underdogs which I feel for. Now, let me join the billions of fans who have complained about the NFL/ Peacock sell-out of their fans. I don’t begrudge them making big money. That’s what they’re there for, they’re not a non-profit. But there comes a time when their loyal fans should be rewarded. One of those rewards has always been to be able to watch playoffs free. That model has passed its expiration date I’m afraid. NBC decided to show the game only on its premium streaming service, Peacock. This was an incredibly stupid move. Yes, Peacock only costs $5.99, so you could sign up for it, then immediately cancel it after the game at no cost. However, NBC and The NFL lost a lot of good will from their fan bases. Fans who are willing to shell out $200 for a team jacket rebelled at the thought of pay playoffs. I thought I was smarter than the system. I signed up for the KC NBC 41 affiliate app on Roku and got the station. I tested the station throughout the day. All good to go. However at game time all I could get was an exciting repeat of the 6 p.m. news from Kansas City. I lucked out and came upon a live stream called How About Those Chiefs, hosted by an intelligent game caller named Cole who put some of the professionals 4 • Good Times Magazine - January 23 - February 19, 2024

By Richard Branciforte

to shame. Cole couldn’t actually show the game on his site, he would have been shut down. But what it did is have several large t.v.s that he watched and gave a fun play by play verbally of what he saw. He had a mockup of the playing field and moved his men down as they advanced. It was great. Not the real thing, but kind of like listening to the game on radio with a friend. The amazing thing was that throughout the broadcast, viewers kept sending Cole money, anywhere from $1.99 to $5, $10, $20, even $50 for his efforts. These same people could easily have used the money to sign up for Peacock for $5.99, but didn’t. There’s a lesson to be learned here, but doubt the NFL will hear it since they grossed an extra $110 million for the Peacock broadcast, which put an additional $3 million+ in each team owner’s stocking.

TAKE JARDIANCE AND HAVE FUN, FUN, FUN Is anyone but me pissed off from the insensitive Jardiance commercial? For those who have missed the thrill of seeing it aired ten million times, briefly, it shows a diabetic singing and dancing their way through various scenes, due to the fact that they are taking Jardiance for their Type 2 diabetes. The commercial purports to show all the wonderful activities you will gain access to if you only take Jardiance. As someone with Type 2, I can tell you it is no picnic (literally) and every time this commercial comes on I switch channels. But what it shows is the insensitivity towards the viewer. This is standard format it seems for drug commercials. A happy customer taking their meds and then singing and dancing through the streets, marketplace or wherever. No, that’s not the way it works. When I pay $400 for my monthly Mounjaro supply, I am not singing and dancing. I am usually unconscious as I try to recover from the $5,000 out of pocket it costs, although I guess I’m lucky since without insurance it is $1100 a month for 4 injections. Enough for now, let me know what pisses you off. If I get enough responses, we can have a Pissed Off Greatest Hits Edition. Email comments to goodtimesfounder@gmail.com

THEATER: WINTER WONDERLAND Instead of the usual January doldrums, 2024 offers a feast of new Broadway openings, starting with highly-anticipated transfers of the off-Broadway hits: “Prayer for the French Republic” and the musical “Days of Wine and Roses,” in which Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James reprise their emotionally devastating performances as a young couple descending into alcoholism. Michael Greif directs the harrowing musical (with a jazzy and soaring score by Adam Guettel), adapted by Craig Lucas from JP Miller’s 1958 teleplay and the 1962 movie. (Studio 54) https:// daysofwineandrosesbroadway.com/ Hailed as “an inspired study in moral uncertainty,” John Patrick Shanley’s 2004 Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, “Doubt: A Parable,” is being given its first Broadway revival by the Roundabout Theatre Company. The compelling, intense drama pits a Catholic school principal, Sister Aloysius (Tyne Daly), against a charismatic neighborhood priest (Liev Scheiber) whom she accuses of molesting a student based purely on her intuition. Scott Ellis directs a cast which includes Zoe Kazan and Quincy Tyler Bernstine. (American Airlines Theatre) https://www.roundabouttheatre.org/gettickets/2023-2024-season/doubt-a-parable/ Following its world premiere at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, “The Notebook,” adapted from Nicholas Sparks’s 1996 bestseller, is 2024’s first new Broadway musical. With a book by Bekah Brunstetter (“This Is Us”) and a score by Ingrid Michaelson, the musical recounts the decades-spanning love 6 • Good Times Magazine - January 23 - February 19, 2024

story between a wealthy young girl, Allie, and a mill worker, Noah, from the 1940s through the ravishes of old age and dementia. Under the direction of Michael Greif and Schele Williams, three sets of actors play Allie and Noah at different ages: Jordan Tyson and John Cardoza as teenagers; Joy Woods and Ryan Vasquez in their late 20s, and Maryann Plunkett and Dorian Harewood as elderly residents of a nursing home. (Previews begin February 10) (Schoenfeld Theatre) https://notebookmusical.com/ The Encores! revival of “Once Upon a Mattress” promises to be a major musical treat. Directed by Lear deBessonet (“Into the Woods) and sporting an all-star cast headed by Sutton Foster, J. Harrison Ghee, Harriet Sansom Harris, Cheyenne Jackson, and Michael Urie, the Mary Rodgers-Marshall Barer musical comedy charmer runs January 24 through February 4. (City Center) https://www.nycitycenter.org/pdps/2023-2024/once-upon-a-mattress/ Scott Bakula and Hannah Cruz star in composer-lyricist Jason Robert Brown’s (“Parade”) timely new musical “The Connector.” Set at a revered magazine in the late 1990s, Jonathan Marc Sherman’s book examines how far an ambitious journalist will go for a big scoop and how far an assistant copy editor will go to stop him. Brown conducts the band at all performances. (Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater) https://mcctheater.org/tix/the-connector/ At the MCC Theater’s second theater, Sean Daniels’s autobiographical recovery comedy, “The White Chip” returns off-Broadway after its 2019 premiere. Joe Tapper reprises his role as man whose life spins out of control – from his first sip, to his descent into alcoholism, and his journey towards recovery. Crystal Dickinson and Jason Tam co-star. https://www.whitechipplay.com/ Based on a true story, “White Rose: The Musical” (music by Natalie Brice; book and lyrics by Brian Belding) concerns a group of courageous university student activists who defy Hitler by distributing leaflets challenging Hitler’s propaganda. SPORTS BEAT The 2023 season marked the thirteenth straight in which the New York Jets have failed to qualify for the NFL playoffs. This means Gang Green has not had a playoff game during the lifetimes of most kids having a bar mitzvah this year. The Jets should reconsider moving their training facilities from Florham Park, NJ back to their old home, Hofstra University. They certainly played better when they were on Long Island. Not much better, but still heads and shoulders over what we have seen in recent years. Even when the Jets prevail, it fails to inspire confidence. The Jets beat the even more woeful Washington Commanders on Christmas Eve by a score of 30-28. The Jets led 27-7 at halftime, only to watch the Commanders score three touchdowns, thanks to a Jets defense which was worn down by QB Trevor Siemian’s inability to get first downs in the second half, as well as his boneheaded interception when the Jets were on the Commanders’ six-yard line. Jets place kicker Greg Zuerlein, one of the few bright spots on the 2023 team, booted a 54-field goal with five seconds left to bail out the home team. It is safe to say Siemian will not be on the roster when Aaron Rodgers returns next season. Both the Jets and Giants deserved to be slimed by their fans after their awful 2023 seasons. The

slime will really be flying next month when cable’s Nickelodeon will be televising the Super Bowl, along with its Paramount corporate sibling, CBS. Los Angeles Dodgers fans had the brightest holiday season as their team signed the two most sought-after free agents this offseason, baseball’s best-known star, Shohei Ohtani, and heavily

recruited 25-year-old Nippon Professional Baseball pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Adding them to a roster which includes such perennial all-stars as Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, and Max Muncy, understandably makes the Dodgers heavy favorites to appear in the 2024 World Series. Mets owner Steve Cohen told the press last August that he expects the Mets to be competitive in 2024 (all sports team owners say that to their club’s fans), but the team would not be as star-studded as in recent seasons. Cohen is playing a long game, as next year’s free agent class should be far stronger than this one. Low expectations in 2024 will give Mets minor league prospects more time to develop. His new president of baseball operations, David Stearns, was acquiring players for 2024 from the dollar store. There may be a surprise gem here, but I would not be holding my breath. Citi Field will be rocking in August, even if the Mets are not. On August 5, Green Day and the Smashing Pumpkins will be performing there. Two days later, Def Leppard, Journey, and the Steve Miller Band will visit Flushing. If those do not work for your schedule, these classic rock artists will also be playing just a little south of us at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park. ESPN, in conjunction with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, have started an alternative

Plus, you know Belushi Speedball & others will bring the party HARD. TOTALLY TUBULAR FESTIVAL will debut in 17 markets across North America starting June 28 in Santa Barbara, CA and wrapping up July 27 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The festival features artists that exploded in the pop culture zeitgeist in the early to mid-1980’s thanks mainly to the high rotation of their music videos on MTV; the genre has also seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. The artists performing on the 2024 tour include THOMAS DOLBY, THOMPSON TWINS’ TOM BAILEY, MODERN ENGLISH, MEN WITHOUT HATS, THE ROMANTICS, BOW WOW WOW, TOMMY TUTONE (select markets), and THE PLIMSOULS. “This is a dream lineup for those who love the music of the early 1980’s, and for those who want to relive the days when life was…plain and simply--a total party,” says Jon Pleeter, CPO (Chief Party Officer) of TOTALLY TUBULAR FESTIVAL. “You wore dayglow, you wore parachute pants, you had big hair, perms and more perms, mullets, leg warmers, along with tons of buttons and lots of rubber bracelets. You wore sunglasses at night. The choruses were big, and the hooks were bigger—the party didn’t end.” Shows: 7/18 – New York, NY – Pier 17, 7/19 – Atlantic City, NJ – Hard Rock Live @ Etess Arena, 7/20 – Bushkill, PA – Poconos Park Amphitheatre

Pass options for Sonic Temple Art & Music Festival include single day and weekend VIP (with access to the VIP area, field, and stadium), Field GA (access to field and stadium) and Stadium GA. Stadium passes allow close general admission access for stages 2, 3 and 4, but only provide stadium seating for the main stage. MADNESS FIRST TOUR SINCE 2012 British ska and pop band Madness announced their first US tour since 2012. The band will visit Seattle, Oakland, Las Vegas, Boston, and New York, giving American audiences their first chance to see the band in over a decade. The Madness C’est La Vie In America tour follows their new UK #1 album Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est la Vie. In their 40-year careers, the bandmates released numerous hit singles and two #1 greatest hits albums, but this is their first #1 studio album. They’ll be playing May 30 @ Hammerstein Ballroom. The governing principle behind Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est la Vie, is: “let Madness be Madness.” The result is an album of typically timeless brilliance that also reflects the wonky years of its creation. These 14 songs represent the cream of the bumper crop of tunes the group cooked up, whittled down to this punchy, focused set. The album is available on double vinyl and CD with a limited crystal-clear vinyl sold through HMV and indie stores. Tickets and more info at www.madness.co.uk/live/ THIRD EYE BLIND SUMMER GODS TOUR Third Eye Blind announced the fourth edition of the Summer Gods Tour. Produced by Live Nation, the tour will begin June 8 in Spokane through August 3 in Houston, with special guests Yellowcard and A R I Z O N A. Tickets are available at ThirdEyeBlind.com. Photo credit: Kylie Spinelli To commemorate the 25th anniversary of “Jumper,” Third Eye Blind is releasing the world’s first playable .999 silver-coated and .997 karat gold-coated records, in collaboration with Precious Sound. Manufactured in Germany, each 5”, 7 ounce record is playable at 33-1/3 RPMs on any manual record player, and pressed with 1,250 tons, using groundbreaking technology. The B-side is an engraving celebrating the cover art of the self-titled album. “Jumper” will be available in .999 silver coating ($450), in .997 gold coating ($800), and twenty-five 24 karat pure gold pressings (price available by request at PreciousSound.com). Pre-orders will be available at thirdeyeblind.com and precioussound.com.

TC KROSS RELEASES RAGER Hailing from the vibrant music scene of Long Island, TC Kross stands tall as a dynamic force in the realms of metal and hard rock. A triple threat as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, TC Kross commands attention with her magnetic stage presence and a vocal prowess that ignites a surge of energy through the veins of her audience. Her music is a seismic fusion of heavy rock and metal, characterized by bone-crushing riffs, thunderous beats, and melodies that hook into your psyche, causing heads to bob involuntarily. LIKE A DOLL DEBUT ALBUM Like a Doll, the project of spirited New York musician Emma Stacher, shared their debut album, Like a Doll. A record filled with textured string arrangements, springing cowbells, running water and bittersweet lullabies, Like a Doll was recorded at Greenpoint, Brooklyn’s Studio G in December 2020. Birthed in NYC’s ever-evolving guitar music scene, the playful six-piece band brings listeners into their figurative dollhouse and dissects past trauma through what they’ve termed “whimsical dissociation.” After sitting with the album for the past three years and playing shows within NYC’s music scene that is shaping the sound of modern guitar music, the release provides a sense of catharsis for the band as they look to the future. The group – comprised almost entirely of childhood friends – promises listeners that they have already written ‘a couple albums’ worth’ of new material, so more music is sure to be on the way soon.

TECHNOBEAT

By Richard Joseph Branciforte

Welcome to the first TechnoBeat of 2024! I hope everyone had an awesome end of the year spent with friends and family and got to check out some great music. If you didn’t get to see any end of the year shows, there’s plenty coming up for you to check out. Making a stop at Brooklyn Steel on January 26 we have the one and only SubDocta. This king of the low down frequencies dropped his Bass Science EP in 2023 and has been tearing up the scene for many years before that. He brings a high level of energy and some really unique sound design to the stage which has kept him relevant and thriving through all the changes in the scene over the years. He continues to push the boundaries of music production and always makes room to collaborate with up and coming producers, keeping his sound fresh. If you’re looking for some house music, Dr. Fresch and Habstrakt will be coming through Avant Gardner on February 3 to hit us with that bass house and tech house. Both of these artists are incredibly fun and captivating on their own, so it only makes sense they would tour together and give the people what they really want (even if they don’t know it yet). Dr. Fresch is a personal favorite for his slowed down house music and dirty basslines, giving a new take on what the average person would consider house music. For a really unique style, Beats Antique and Balkan Bump will have you covered at Brooklyn Bowl on February 8. Balkan Bump is known for bringing his trumpet out during his sets to immerse the listener in some funky brass vibes

Alleycvt while also bringing the heat to the stage. He’s been featured on numerous bass and funk songs and has also rocketed his career with a style is that becoming evermore popular in the last few years. Beats Antique is an experimental world fusion group that pulls styles from various cultures and mixes it into their music. Stepping into a Beats Antique show will have you wondering what planet you journeyed to and what style and sound you are going to hear next. This fusion of musical styles from around the world adds an engaging atmosphere to the live show and the performances from the trio are one of a kind. As the new year has begun, I want to take a look at some artists I think will reach new musical heights this year. First up, we have Alleycvt. A dubstep and bass producer who also sings, Alleycvt creates an incredibly grimey style of bass music that feels different than everything else I hear out there. She seems to have come out of nowhere this last year and is poised to start becoming huge 20 • Good Times Magazine - January 23 - February 19, 2024

as she continues to deliver music that goes against the norms of bass music these days. On stage, she comes across as a genuine human whose sole purpose is to make sure her fans have the best night possible. Each track she releases takes a step up from her last track and I can guarantee you’ll be seeing her name on more and more lineups throughout the year. Another name you may have heard through their song “Flip It” is Levity. This song hit the scene and began an instant success with numerous big name artists dropping the song in their sets. They constantly Levity are teasing new music on their social media accounts and have dropped a handful of songs in 2023. They are opening for artists such as Liquid Stranger, Inzo, DJ Diesel (Shaq), and will be making an appearance at festivals like Ultra and Ubbi Dubbi as well as making many stops on their own tour. This is a trio that seemed to pop up out of nowhere and taken the scene by storm. Although I’ve never seen them live, I can only imagine how vibrant their live sets will be. Putting out good vibes at a show is half the battle and I have no doubt they will be hitting the gas pedal with all they have in 2024. Thanks for tuning in this time and can’t wait to share with everyone out there again next month. Hit me up at richiegtechno@gmail.com and remember to keep raging my friends!

CLASSIC ROCK

METAL

NEIL DIAMOND “AUSTRALIA LIVE 1976” On January 19th, Mercury Studios reissued the historic and formerly long out of print concert event The Thank You Australia Concert Live 1976 DVD, from the legendary and inimitable songwriter and performer Neil Diamond. This concert from the Sydney Sports Stadium was the final show of Diamond’s 1976 Australian New Zealand tour, an event that marked his comeback to the stage after a creatively fruitful fouryear sabbatical from live performance that resulted in the creation of the ground-breaking, Grammy winning album; Jonathon Livingston Seagull and the autobiographical album Beautiful Noise, produced by Robbie Robertson of The Band. Just ten years after “Solitary Man” rocketed into the charts and introduced us to Neil Diamond; the 1976 tour is still one of the most memorable in Australian history. The Neil Diamond Thank You Australia Concert Live 1976 delivers the enthralling performance of a consummate showman. The Thank You Australia Concert Live 1976 is presented with a host of bonus features including priceless moments of entertainment history: Neil Diamond’s first ever full-length Television interview – an intimate 50 minutes filmed during the March ’76 tour.

MICKEY THOMAS “A CLASSIC CHRISTMAS”

Christmas may be over, but you still might want to check out Mickey Thomas’ “A Classic Christmas,” a two-sided single (available digitally only, via Symphonic Distribution) on which he distinctively lights up such holiday gems as “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” with his deeply soulful and soaring voice. Having recorded only one Christmas song before—a bluesy/gospel version of “Silent Night” with the Elvin Bishop Band in 1976—Mickey says, “I love traditional Christmas songs because most of them were written by fantastic old school writers. They all have a terrific sense for melody and usually have very creative rhyme schemes.” Both songs were produced, mixed, and engineered by Dan Frizell and recorded in East Iris Studios in Nashville with John Willis (guitars), David Dorn (keys), Mark Hill (bass), and Evan Hutchings (Drums). LESLEY GORE’S ‘EVER SINCE’ ECR Music Group has released the acclaimed final album of Lesley Gore as a deluxe edition fully restored, remixed, and remastered by the album’s original producer and ECR founder, Blake Morgan. This new deluxe edition of Ever Since features a never-before-released bonus track––Gore’s final studio recording––recorded during the album’s original 2005 sessions. “In the years since Lesley’s death in 2015, I’d found it emotionally challenging to listen to the album we made together,” says Morgan. “She was my godmother after all, and I have such rich and beautiful memories of us making Ever Since. I still miss her.” In addition to the ten original tracks on Ever Since, this final studio recording of Gore’s (Morgan and Gore’s reimagining of her previously Quincy Jones– produced song “Love Me By Name”) prompted Morgan to embark on a full restoration, remix, and remaster of the entire album. “We’d tracked ‘Love Me By Name’ in full, but never mixed it back in 2005. Mixing it this past spring provided me the impetus to breathe new life into the entire record and restore it in full, in all its glory.” The most commercially successful solo artist of the “Girl Group” era of the ‘60s, singer-songwriter Lesley Gore quickly set herself apart. With a string of Quincy Jones-produced chart-topping hits, including “It’s My Party,” “Judy’s Turn To Cry,” and “You Don’t Own Me.” 22 • Good Times Magazine - January 23 - February 19, 2024

Today, the Gibson Band is launching the first single, “Deconstruction,” which was cowritten by Serj Tankian of System of a Down and Cesar Gueikian, CEO of Gibson, and features Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath on guitar. UMPHREY MCGEE COVERS “LET’S DANCE” Opening with a perfectly replicated doo-wop vocal stack, Umphrey’s McGee’s latest release, a ripping cover of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” finds the Chicago-based veterans of the improv-rock scene sticking closely to the original wax from Bowie’s 1983 album of the same name. But this new version has a ringer that could’ve never been dreamed up those 41 years ago: the incomparable Huey Lewis on lead vocals. Little did the band and Lewis know that it would be his last recording session before Meniere’s disease and hearing loss forced him to stop singing after a lengthy, iconic career. Additionally, another longtime UM collaborator, Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones), adds his iconic saxophone touches to this version of “Let’s Dance,” originally recorded for Howard Stern’s David Bowie Tribute on SiriusXM. “I still can’t believe that we actually got to collaborate with these two musical powerhouses on one of my favorite David Bowie tunes of all time,” says Umphrey’s Mcgee guitarist and singer, Brendan Bayliss.” For all tour dates and ticket information, please visit umphreys.com/tour. RUSSELL/GUNS ‘MEDUSA’ RUSSELL/GUNS marks the beginning of a fresh artistic partnership between two legendary figures of Los Angeles hard rock: Jack Russell and Tracii Guns, accompanied by Johnny Martin, Shane Fitzgibbon and Alexandro del Vecchio. The pair have announced an upcoming new studio album, ‘Medusa,’ released January 12th via Frontiers Music Srl. To kick off the announcement is the first single, “Next In Line” which showcases Jack’s stellar vocals and Tracii’s always clear and catchy riffs and is the first shot at showing just what a powerhouse RUSSELL / GUNS is to contemporary hard rock. On ‘Medusa,’ Jack and Tracii have discovered a common thread in a collection of songs that draw from the bluesy power and heavy energy of their most celebrated material and roots, yet infused with a fresh, energetic drive and modern metallic production.
