GEOLOGICAL CONSTRUCTION AS A FERTILE BASE

San Fransisco is located at the north side of the San Fransisco peninsula. A the south lies a hillside landscape with some be part of the city landscape and neighbourhoods called upon the hill they are located. Nob Hill, Portrero Hill and Russian Hill. Between the rocky landscape lies a sand deposition layer and along the bay natural and artificial filler material. The urban system is based upon a rational, rigid grid. A grid serves several advantages. It is readable as streets can be chronologically numbered, walkable as every distance from one corner to the other has the same lenght. Also the equality is a quality. It doesn’t matter in which block you live as it has more or the less the same proporties. The grid is a strong entity and very adaptive. It ties like web and offers a great amount of flexibility. Within a block functions and typologies can be mixed without effecting the coherence of the system. High-rise between low buidlings and cultural heritage near modern architecture.
