GROWTH | A CITY THAT GROWS LIKE NATURE

Essential City Services

The dam structures from the Masterplan are the key elements in creating lee areas and the islands of the archipelago. The dam structures are the spine of the city landscape, functioning as the urban and nature backbone.

The archipelago is a growing landscape, it will evolve in time. The urban, landscape and nature development starts with the lee structures, this spine.

This backbone serves for the main infrastructure of the city, transport, energy networks, and nature corridors. Along the backbone the essential city services are located, so they are directly connected to the main infrastructure: hospitals, theaters, shopping centres, universities etc.

Spine

The archipelago city landscape grows in and with water.

There is no need to develop the landscape from one central position as there are several lee structures to attach developments. It is possible to grow a multi-core archipelago. A organically growing city in water with just leestructures as the base is lacking an identifier.

Like a body the backbone is not just the spine, but the spine with the head on top.

The main structure of the archipelago consists of a lee structure and a head, the urban anchor. As with the lee structure, the head is a top-down conducted element, a strong architectural feature function as the identifier. The urban anchor serves as a beacon for further bottom-up developments.
