NEWSLETTER 8 – 2014

28 March 2014

From the Headmaster’s Desk End of Term We have reached the end of a very busy first term for 2014. Thank you to all members of staff for your hard work this term. All members of staff are now au fait in the implementation of CAPS and deadlines were met with work that needed to be covered this term. The high standard of work delivered speaks for itself when looking at our academic, sport and cultural results overall. Thank you to all members of the SGB, PTA and parents for your ongoing support of the school. I wish you well for a well-deserved rest and hope that we all will return safely at the beginning of next term, revived and well rested. We unfortunately say goodbye to Mrs Jane Anderson who is retiring, and who has manned the front office for six years. We thank her for the years of dedication to the school and children of WPS and wish her well for the future.

We have many aftercare teachers looking for children on a Friday after school because parents have not informed them about their child’s whereabouts.

Recycling

Mrs L. Eagle

Reycling is going well and I am so grateful to all who take the effort to collect and bring their waste to school each Wednesday. A big thanks to the Grade 6s, who have braved some rather wet days to work, and retained their cheerful, helpful disposition. Thank you also to those moms who just pitch up and pitch in! Your hard labour is greatly appreciated. We are gearing up for a slight change next term in that the Polystyrene Packaging Council (PSPC) has introduced the opportunity of getting involved in two charities. Did you know that polystyrene can be recycled up to 20 times? Project 1 will help provide wheelchairs for people who are unable to afford their own wheelchairs. It is known as the Breadtags for Wheelchairs Project, and is a wonderful collaborative effort with PSPC, QuadPara and WastePlan Recyclers. Project 2 helps to provide desks for schools for children to work on. Known as the TUTUdesk Campaign, and under patronage of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, high impact polystyrene is recycled and modeled into a simple, hard lap desk, that allows the pupils to work neatly and carefully. Both projects require polystyrene and that is where we come in. PSPC has kindly provided us with two large, dark green wheelie bins which we will use for polystyrene collection. The bins are clearly marked as to what must be placed in each container. Bin 1/Project 1: This requires the collection of breadtags only. These are the little clips that are used to keep the plastic bags around bread closed, and sometimes are also used for fruit and vegetables. I suggest that you keep a small container, 2 liter ice cream container, especially for bread tags. I have stickers for labeling so send the container home, and we will label it. If every family fills a 2 liter ice cream container, we will have enough for one wheelchair. Bin 2/Project 2: This is for high density polystyrene used in plastic cutlery, small yoghurt containers, packaging covers (like lids for takeaway drinks), Bic pen shafts, etc. In fact, anything with a 6 in the middle of the recycling triangle. We are also still collecting the soft, spongy type, known as expandable polystyrene, used in packaging. Please place this in the large bag marked “Polystyrene” that hangs on the fence. PSPC emphasised the importance of bringing clean items for recycling, so please make sure you rinse out your packaging, dry them and bring to school. Please carry on collecting the tags and ‘bakkies’ during the holidays.
