WATERKLOOF PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 6 – 2016

30 September 2016

Mrs S.C. Monyai A sincere thank you to the whole WPS family for the hard work done this term! Thank you to - the teachers and admin staff for making sure that teaching and learning happens and our deadlines are met; the SGB for the many hours they spend making sure that things are running smoothly; the support staff for ensuring that our grounds are always clean and well kept; and last but not least, the parents for your continuous support and co-operation. We wish you all a peaceful, well deserved rest during the holidays. Term 4 starts on Monday 10 October 2016 - children must please pack for Day 6. The fourth term is a ‘test and exam’ term so start preparing now. Good luck to you all. Corner Julius Jeppe Street and Rose Avenue: The water problem has finally been solved - thank you for your co-operation and support. Discipline: We have had many intervention meetings this term. Many children need to start Term 4 with a change in positive attitude, and then we can look forward to a good year end. Road Safety: A number of our learners have been seen disobeying our WPS scholar patrollers. Parents must please make sure that children cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. Please be patient and drive carefully. Children who are late for school: School starts promptly at 07:30 and by that time the children should be in their class waiting areas. The number of children arriving late is increasing and this needs to be controlled. Children leaving school early: Parents/guardians must please inform the teacher if your child is leaving school early by writing a note in the Homework Diary. If a different person is picking up the child, valid identification, ID book or driver’s licence, will be requested. Julius Jeppe Street waiting area: The number of children waiting unsupervised after school between 14:30 and 18:00 is escalating. Parents must fetch their children on time or make other arrangements, i.e. transport arrangements, or registering with one of the aftercare centres. Personal valuables in cars: Parents please make sure that their cars are safely locked and that all personal valuables are locked away out of sight, when parking at the school.

Mrs J. Shee

Congratulations to all the children who took part in our annual Inter-House Quiz. It was a fun-filled evening with our children, and the audience, showing off their vast knowledge. Top place this year went to the Mercury team - well done!

Spelling Bee During Term 2 and 3 Spelling Bee Competitions have been held at cluster, circuit and district level in Gauteng. WPS was represented by Enzo Neto (Gr 4), Odirile Moumakwe (Gr 5) and Kareena Jivan (Gr 6) at cluster level. Kareena went through to the circuit and district competitions - well done children.

Read-a-Thon Thank you to all the parents and children for yet another successful Read-a-Thon. The school was filled with Roald Dahl characters on the last day of our literacy week. We chose Roald Dahl books as our theme this year as he would have been 100 years old if he were still alive! The week was filled with reading activities, namely The Travelling Bookshop, a Roald Dahl movie and a Hooked on Books presentation. This year we raised R52 565.00 which will be used for artificial grass on the Media Centre terrace. Thank you!

SPCA - Charity

Mrs A. Stobbart

Thank you to all children and parents for the wonderful donations of dog and cat food, and blankets for the SPCA that we received. All the food and blankets, and money is used to make the lives of animals better. During 2015 the Tshwane SPCA investigated 950 cruelty complaints; 150 pro-active investigations were conducted with 321 warnings issued. Without contributions like ours, the SPCA’s valuable work cannot continue. THANK YOU!

Mandarin Lessons

Mrs L. Eagle

This term saw the start of Mandarin lessons at Waterkloof Primary School. At 13:50 approximately thirty hyper-excited children poured into my class ready for their one and a half hour Mandarin lesson. One of our teachers also attends the classes which are given by a very competent and kind Chinese teacher. By now the children can already say and recognise their own Chinese names, can sing the simple Chinese alphabet, count in Chinese up to one hundred, greet one another, introduce their family members, use pronouns correctly, identify different parts of their bodies and name the days of the week. We can also write some of the Chinese characters and interpret their meanings and origin. We have worked very hard on pronunciation and know the phonic way of writing Mandarin. The children are wonderful and amazing in the way they grasp a concept and apply it to new situations. We are looking forward to another term of enjoyment and learning.

Recycling

Mrs L. Eagle

In spite of numerous issues with our recycling company our recycling programme is going very well. We have collected over 5 ton of paper and cardboard alone this term. Thank you to those who bring their waste each week. I am still concerned that on average only three children per class bring recycling to school which only amounts to approximately sixty families. If all WPS families can collect a bag or two of recyclable material, you don’t only help the environment, but the school as well! A reminder - collect your materials over the holidays and bring it to school on the first Wednesday after school re-opens. You may drop off your collected waste on the soccer field at the recycling depot between 07:00 and 07:30. We also need you to rinse out your stuff - we have been re-ceiving some awfully dirty material of late. Please, parents, the children must be kept safe. WE ARE A RECYCLING DEPOT - NOT A WASTE DUMP, SO WE ONLY COLLECT CLEAN RECYCLABLE ITEMS.
