WATERKLOOF PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 3 – 2016

18 March 2016

End of Term

Mrs S.C. Monyai

Schools will re-open on Tuesday 5 April 2016 at 07:30 - remember to pack for Day 5. A sincere thank you to all the staff for the hard work this term. It is unbelievable that the term has passed by so quickly. The learners have finished their assessment tasks for Term 1. Thank you to all the parents and learners for working hard in preparation of these tasks. It is now time for us all to have a break and rest. To those who are travelling during the Easter holiday, travel safely, and to those not going away, enjoy your stay at home and keep safe, too.

Farewell WPS says farewell to Mrs Carol van Schalkwyk after 28 years of loyal and dedicated service. Mrs van Schalkwyk has managed our school’s administration most com-petently for all these years. She will be sorely missed and we wish her a long and happy retirement.

Report Cards - Term 1 Each child has received a report for Term 1, to report to the parents on their progress made during this term. Parents are required to go though the report with their child and discuss areas of strength, and those areas where support is needed.

Textbook Retrieval - Term 1 All textbooks have been retrieved for Term 1. Any textbook that was not returned has been recorded as lost and a replacement letter has been issued. Learners are required to take care of the school’s books as it is difficult and time consuming to replace them.

School Governing Body Thank you to all the SGB members for spending numerous hours in meetings to find ways to keep WPS a happy school. A special thank you to the members who volunteered their services, in the shortlisting and interviewing process, to fill the deputy principal position. Their support is highly appreciated.

Mothers who Care A sincere thank you to the Mothers who Care for always being there for the school.

Extra-mural Activities Thank you to all parents who have helped their children commit to at least one extra-mural activity a week. This term the attendance has increased and the children have participated happily. Mrs de Beer, teachers and coaches have given positive feedback to me. The 2nd Term extra-mural timetable is included in the report envelope. Please check the various activities and times before you commit to an activity. Remember to make a plan to fetch your child straight after extra-mural activities end.

Acting Deputy Principals

Mrs S.C. Monyai

A special thank you to Mrs Shee and Mrs Daniels who are acting as deputy principals. They have assisted me in making the term a success.

Maths Parents and children please note that a lot of the work done in Term 1 is revision of the previous grade’s work. Averages are, therefore, relatively high. In order to maintain this standard learners will need to work diligently and consistently from the first day of Term 2.

Train your Brain Thank you to all the children for so enthusiastically taking part in our annual ‘Train your Brain’. The children did really well and enjoyed showing off their general knowledge! Thank you to all our parents for sponsoring your child. We raised R36567.00 which will be used to pay for our new outdoor sound system and two data projectors. Your generous support of our fund raising projects is always much appreciated and valued. It is through fund raising activities that we are able to keep WPS up to date with technology, and to be a beautiful environment for our children to attend school - thank you!

Baked Beans Thank you to everyone who has so generously donated towards this good cause.

Scholar Patrol

Mr D. Moyo

As Term 1 draws to a close, we would like to thank all our scholar patrol learners for the sterling work they do. Thank you also to their parents for assisting in making sure that the patrollers arrive on time in the morning. We are pleased to say that an overwhelming majority of our parents support our efforts by complying with scholar patrol rules. However, a number of parents still show a total disregard for our scholar patrol, putting the lives of our children and other parents at risk. Our job is not that of law enforcement but we are obliged to humbly request that parents fully co-operate with us by obeying scholar patrol rules to maintain safety at all times.

Swimming

Mrs J. de Beer

We swam in the B League Interschool gala on 2 March 2016. Unfortunately, we were beaten and now will swim in the C League. The swimmers really tried their best and enjoyed the afternoon. The swimmers would like to thank Mrs Monyai and Mrs Shee for visiting them at Hillcrest and encouraging them. In spite of the results Waterkloof Primary can boast about numerous individual swimmers; most notable Kayleigh Adamson who was the VICTRIX Ludorum of the afternoon. This means that Kayleigh scored the most number of individual points of all winners. Well done Kayleigh. Alessandro Montalto won 4 gold medals and broke the u 14 Boys Freestyle record. Sizwe Mlambo won 3 silver medals and 1 bronze medal. Kayleigh won 1 gold medal, 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal.

Riley Wearne won a gold medal and Bianca Windt won a silver medal. The u 13 Girls relay team broke both the freestyle relay record and the medley relay record. Well done Kayleigh, Riley, Bianca and Jenna. We really hope that next year we will have more children taking part in the swimming and the galas.
