WATERKLOOF PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 3

3 February 2014

From the Headmaster’s Desk As it is still early in the year I deem it necessary to make parents aware of some of the school policies relating to operational requirements. Due to difficulties relating to teaching and general discipline, learners are NOT allowed to use cell phones on school premises between 07:30 and 13:50 or when involved in extra-mural activities. They are not allowed to be used for the following reasons: they cause disruption during contact time, use between periods results in late arrival for classes, learners are not responsible enough, at this age, to discern between acceptable and unacceptable content drawn from the internet, or the sending of inappropriate content to peers, to prevent electronic bullying and victimisation, to prevent learners from phoning parents during school hours with the knowledge of the school, and educators need to spend valuable time following up discipline related issues and theft. Cell Phone Policy     

   

Cell phones may not be used at school during contact time. Should a cell phone be seen or heard, it will be confiscated by the educator and handed in at the office. The phone will be placed in a sealed envelope with the learner’s particulars and date for collection indicated and stored in a safe place. The educator or the school does not take responsibility for the confiscated cell phone. The complete phone, including the battery and sim card, as well as any other accessories, will be confiscated for a period of eleven weeks (excluding holidays) or until the last day of the year. Parents will be notified by the educator who confiscated the phone, about the confiscation in the presence of the learner. No time will be allocated in following up on lost or stolen cell phones. Learners may not take cell phones on educational outings. Playing games, music or accessing the internet is not permitted on school grounds. Children may only take calls before 07:30 and after 13:50 if they are not involved in a school activity at the time.

Extra Art & Music - Gr 7

Ms K. Williams/Mrs S. Lubbe

As per CAPS policy, the school is required to offer extra practical Art & Music sessions to Gr 7 learners. These are for learners who have not completed enough work during the school contact time. They will be notified in class at the end of the lesson as to whether they will be required to attend the next session. Music Art

Traffic on Rose Avenue

14:15 - 15:00 (Music Room) 14:00 - 15:00 (Art Room) Mr D. Moyo

Morning traffic on Milner Street has been smooth flowing and we are grateful for the consideration and due care shown by all stakeholders. We would, however, once again remind our parents to train the children, especially the Grade 1s, to use the crossing point manned by our scholar patrol on Rose Avenue. The practice of dropping children in the middle of the road should be avoided at all costs. Parents are also encouraged to drop off their children and leave - this frees the areas available for parking for use by other parents. From the Sportsdesk

Mrs J. de Beer

Sport practices are well underway and we have already competed in tennis and cricket matches. Please continue attending extra-mural activities with enthusiasm and dedication. The children are reminded that if they do not have the correct sports attire, they will be asked to sit out of a practice. Grey socks are part of the school uniform and NOT the sports uniform.   

Cricket - The Open A team lost by 4 runs to Northridge Primary and the Open B team won their match by 9 wickets. Grant Petzer scored 41 runs in the A team match and Claudio Lopes took 3 wickets in the B team match. Well done boys! Tennis - WPS won their first tennis match against Laerskool Elarduspark. Well done to these budding superstars! Swimming - A swimming squad has been chosen based on the times that the children swam at the trials. A list will be put up outside the sport’s office and on the School Communicator every week showing which children are swimming in the Friday galas, as selection depends on the events at these friendly galas. Please encourage your children to train, so as to better their times and be included in the swimming squad during the season.

Tennis - WPS won their first tennis match against Laerskool Elarduspark. Well done to these budding superstars. The following children are ranked on a tennis ladder. 1. Logan Repko 2. Aren Repko 3. Daniel Williams 4. Georgia Kenneally – No 1 Girl 5. Anaerobi Okonkwo 6. Scott Hudson 7. Ricardo Marques 8. Robert Kampala Each player will be allowed one free challenge to challenge as high up on the ladder as they want. After that, players may only challenge a maximum of three places above. Challenge matches will take place every Wednesday from 12 February. Please make sure that the Challenge slips are completed by both players and handed in to coach Gary or coach Nico the day before your match. Challenge slips can be collected from the coaches at any practices. There is a list of the rankings of all the other players outside the Sport’s office. Squad training is only for players 1 to 8 and the others must play on a Tuesday or Thursday until they win a challenge and move up to number 1 to 8. Fixtures for this Week Monday
