WATERKLOOF PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 32 – 2013

25 November 2013

Wings of Love Charity

Mrs J. Shee

Well done to all our children who brought baked beans for the ‘Wings of Love’ charity. Beth de Beer and numerous volunteers gave up their time to pack over 1000 bags of groceries for underprivileged families. WPS played an amazing role in this charitable endeavour, in memory of Beth’s daughter, Tamsyn. Beth hopes this even will grow each year, so that many more families, suffering from daily food insecurity, may benefit. WPS received 100 bags filled with tea, oil, baked beans, tomato and onion, biscuits, jelly and mealie meal, to donate to charities of our choice. Bags were sent to Hope Warriors Children’s Charity, the Anglican Arch Diocese of Pretoria, and Mercy House, a home for women and children human trafficking. Thank you to all.

Chaeli Campaign Visit

Mrs J. Shee

On Friday 15 November 2013, our children enjoyed a visit from Chaeli and Zelda Mycroft and Grant Kruger. Chaeli has cerebral palsy. She is a fulltime student at UCT together with Grant her ‘cycling partner’. At the age of nine Chaeli, her sister Erin and friends Chelsea, Justine and Tarryn Terry started to raise funds for a motorised wheelchair for Chaeli. In just seven weeks they had raised R20 000 and Chaeli got her wheels. This was the birth of the Chaeli Campaign, a non-profit organisation that over the past ten years has helped other children with disabilities become more comfortable and independent. This past weekend Chaeli and Grant completed the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge in 4hrs 17min 50sec to raise funds to help others. Visit her website to read more about this amazing young lady and her family and friends. Her zest for life and attitude can teach us all a lesson about making a difference - www.chaelicampaign.co.za

Children leaving the School Parents of children not returning to WPS in 2014 must please notify the school in writing as soon as their decision not to return is final. Not returning the Re-registration Form is not sufficient notification that your child is not coming back in 2014.

Lost Property

Mrs J. Shee

All lost property is on display outside the Media Centre, at line up. What has not been collected by 08:00 on the last day of school will be sent to charity.

Recycling

Mrs L. Eagle

Wednesday 27 November 2013 will be the last opportunity in 2013 to bring recycling material to the school. Please make sure that you deliver ALL your available waste on Wednesday as a five week break creates a lot of waste! I would like to express a sincere thank you to each person who has contributed to our Recycling Programme this year. Thank you to all who bring clean, sorted waste regularly to the soccer field on Wednesday mornings. We need your waste to make this a worthwhile endeavour. Thank you to Lukas and the ground staff who clean up after us at the Recycling Enclosure. Thank you to the Recycling Monitors who have braved, cold, heat, wind and rain in order to serve the Waterkloof community - your work does not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated. Thank you to the special team of moms who so cheerfully come and sort the big bags of waste. Your input has demonstrated the meaning of ‘many hands make light work’ and has made an incredible difference to my workload. THANK YOU Sandy Cazalet, Laurianne van Biljon, Samantha Govender, Mandy Badenhorst, Jeanette Williams, Bridget Learmont, and all the other ladies.

School Uniform

Mrs I. Pereira

A grey ‘longer length’ type panty is being introduced for girls from Grade 1 to 7. These are only available from the school shop, C.J. Goodies. Please note that ski pants or shorts will not be permitted to be worn under school dresses.

‘The Clean Up’

Aum Maharaj - Gr 5 Stobbart

It is tough to wake up early on a Saturday morning you know, but my mum says that once you make a commitment, you have got to stick to it, so off we went! At first it did not look like there were many kids from school at the clean up, but as time passed, our numbers grew and we were soon joined by Mr van Niekerk as well. As Mrs Shee and Mrs Eagle walked us over to the Muckleneuk Spruit, we were horrified to find bags and bags of garbage in the spruit. But we collected our bags, put on our surgical gloves and began our mission. You would be surprised to see some of the stuff we picked up: tons of bottle caps, paper, plastic, glass bottles and even a pair of pants and a shoe! Some parts were really gross! Mrs Shee, at one time, was fishing out nappies from the spruit! Someone had stopped at the bridge and thrown all their domestic waste into the spruit. Ridiculous! After about two hours of intensive clean-up, and a bit of fun, our group was finally able to see the fruits of our labour. Thank you to Mrs Shee and Mrs Eagle for organising this effort as I was not only proud to be a learner of Waterkloof Primary, but also proud of making a tiny difference to my community and environment. Something, I think, we should all get involved in more often!
