WATERKLOOF PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 19 – 2015

26 October 2015

Term 4

Mrs S.C. Monyai

A warm word of welcome to all the teachers, learners and parents. I hope that you have all had a relaxed, well deserved holiday. Term 4 is a busy but short term. All the Grade 4 to 7 learners have already received their “What to Learn” for the exams. They all need to start preparing for these final assessments and good luck to all of them. The Grade 1 to 3 learners will carry on with continuous assessments in the different subjects when the Grade 4 to 7 learners are writing exams.

Textbooks

Mrs S.C. Monyai

Learners will be allowed to take their textbooks home to study for the exams. Parents must please assist them to pack their suitcases according to the timetable to avoid bags that are too heavy. The learners are expected to have their textbooks in class for all the lessons before and after the exams as teachers will continue with teaching.

Annual General Meeting

Mrs S.C. Monyai

A reminder that the SGB Annual General Meeting will take place on Tuesday 10 November 2015 at 18:00 in the school hall. Parents must please attend this very important meeting. The budget for 2016 will be discussed and school fees decided.

Staffing

Mrs S.C. Monyai

The principal post has not yet been filled yet. A big thank you to Mr P. Niemann for teaching Grade 5 Life Skills. Welcome to Mrs G. Baker who has returned to her Grade 1 teaching position after the birth of her daughter. Thank you to Mrs C. Prinsloo for teaching in her class while she was away. Mrs Prinsloo is back in Grade 4, teaching Mathematics, and Mr K. Nyakane is teaching Grade 5 Life Skills. A big thank you to Mr Nyakane for teaching in Mrs Prinsloo’s class.

Extra-murals

Mrs S.C. Monyai

The extra-mural timetable has been issued. Learners are encouraged to look at activities, cultural or sport, and take part. Parents please note the starting and finishing times in order to make proper transport arrangements.

Late Comers

Mrs S.C. Monyai

Learners arriving late at school continues to be a problem. School starts at 07:30 and it is important for the learners to be on time to start the day with their peers.

Late Coming Register We have trusted learners and parents to sign the late-coming register. It is very sad that the register indicates:  ticks made near the names of the children who were early for the day, and  some late children’s names are not ticked in the register! However, some good news:  some children are HONEST and mark themselves late if they are late. As from 19 October 2015 children MUST produce their homework diary to the security guard at the gate to identify themselves.

School Jerseys

Mrs S.C. Monyai

The school jersey is one of the most expensive uniform items and the children lose them regularly. Learners are not to put on jerseys on cool mornings because they either take them off as soon as they arrive at school and leave them lying around. The number of lost property items that the school handles is shocking.

Water Problems

Mrs S.C. Monyai

We are currently experiencing a water supply problem. We, therefore, ask parents to provide their children with a cold bottle of water every morning until the problem is resolved.

From the Sportsdesk

Mrs J. de Beer

Karate - Congratulations to Vanessa Dolski in Grade 1 who was selected to represent South Africa at the 8th JSKA World Karate Championships to be hosted in Swakopmund, Namibia in 2016.

Swimming - Please note that in the 4th term we only swim relay galas. Each relay is made up of two boys

and two girls, so the team for the galas this term is very small. Many of the children have swum qualifying times and need to attend team training to get fit for the Interhouse Gala on Friday 13 November 2015, as well as for the team in 2016.

Please encourage your children to attend the swimming training at the school, as we have a highly qualified coach who is passionate about swimming. The correct swimming attire consists of: Girls: Full black swimming costume. Boys: Black Speedo or black ¾ costume. NO OTHER COSTUMES WILL BE PERMITTED. Swimming caps - children swimming in the school team must have the WPS swimming cap for galas. Should your child not swim for the school, they may wear a cap in the colour of their house, i.e. Jupiter-green; Saturn-red; Mercury-yellow and Neptune-blue. Both the costumes and the caps are available from C. Goodies. Please provide your child with a swimming towel and sun block.

SPCA Collection

Mrs A. Stobbart

Each term SPCA collection tins are placed in each register class and we collect change from children and parents. Last term approximately R1800 was raised! We are very grateful to our parents, learners and staff who open their hearts to such a needy cause.

Charity

Mrs J. Shee

New Christmas Gifts for Children in Need Please support this term’s charity project to provide a new gift for a child between the ages of 1 to 18. Many children do not have a Christmas filled with cheer due to their home circumstances. We ask you to please be generous and light up someone else’s life with a special gift. Your kindness always makes a difference in many children’s lives.

Past Pupils Excel

Mrs J. Shee

Congratulations to Alessia Bellomo, Michelle Cazalet, Monica Martins, Sharna Moonsamy and Kendra Wilkinson who are currently in the top 20 academics of Grade 8 at PHSG, and who have been nominated to go on an Academic Achievers’ Tour in 2016. These girls have a choice to tour the UK or USA to attend lectures at the country of their choice top universities, as well as do sightseeing during their free time. Universities include Oxford, Cambridge and Durham in the UK and Yale and Harvard in the USA. Apparently girls in Grades 9 and 10 were also invited. We are unaware if any of our previous pupils are amongst them. We are extremely proud of these girls’ academic achievements.

Bullying Talk : Grades 4 - 7

Mrs J. Shee

Our pupils were extremely privileged at the end of last term when they received a visit from Sven Ruygrok, the actor who plays the role of Rambo in the Spud movies. He spoke to the children about his own experiences of being bullied as a young boy and gave practical advice on how to cope with bullies. His talk was awe inspiring and I encourage you to talk to your child about his presentation.
