WATERKLOOF PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 18 – 2014

3 November 2014

School Fees

School Governing Body

Kindly take note that the full school fees for the 2014 academic year must be paid by 31 October 2014. Failure to pay the full school fees by said date will result in parents being listed with the credit bureau. Please check your monthly statements very carefully. The onus is on parents to notify the school of any discrepancies on their statement as the school will not be held responsible for any possible errors which have not be queried by parents.

Charity

Mrs J. Shee

Please support this term’s charity project to provide a new gift for a child between the ages of 1 to 18. Many children do not have a Christmas filled with cheer due to their home circumstances. We ask you to please be generous and light up someone else’s life with a special gift. Your kindness always makes a difference in many children’s lives. Thank you to all our parents who gave money towards Mrs Monyai’s farewell. We have donated the money to Tshwane Haven for abandoned babies in Rigel Avenue. We thank you for allowing us to use your money in this way.

Clean Up Day

Mrs J. Shee

Thank you to all our children, parents and staff who were involved in the spruit cleanup on Saturday 25 October 2014. There were over seventy of us and we filled sixty bags with waste and recycling in 1½ hours. Many hands make light work and the children all learnt valuable lessons about being responsible citizens! There was a great spirit and the morning was a huge success. Thank you once again; as always our community never fails to impress!

Extra Lessons

Mrs J. Shee

According to CAPS, the following subjects are required to offer extra lessons once per week. Maths & English Arts & Culture - music and art

Grades 1 to 7 Grade 7

Extra lesson times and days will be communicated on a quarterly basis to the parents of children who are required to attend these lessons.

Recycling Update

Mrs L. Eagle

Once again our recycling programme is going strong! I thank everyone for the huge increase in paper and cardboard brought for recycling over the past few weeks. There was a formidable paper mountain last week! Thank you also to those who bring clean and sorted items for recycling - it is hugely appreciated by those who have to sort and pack through your waste. We emphasise that we are a recycling depot, meaning that we only collect recyclable items and we are not an alternative place for sending your refuse! The items we collect are: paper and cardboard waste; aluminium cans - cold drink and beer cans; tin (food) cans; glass bottles; plastic cold drink bottles, i.e. Coke, Fanta bottles, with a resin code 1 on the recycling sign - usually on the underside of the bottle; plastic milk bottles, ice cream tubs and cream bottles - resin code 2; plastic bags - resin code 4; moulded plastic goods and opaque plastics, i.e. Jik bottles, shampoo containers, yoghurt tubs, etc., and tetrapacs - milk juice cartons.

And for our charities: polystyrene that has been made into items such as small (125-175ml) yoghurt container, i.e. all Nutriday containers; the outer covering of Bic pens, disposable cutlery - the must have a resin code 6. The polystyrene is melted down and reshaped into portable desk tops for disadvantaged learners; bread tags - we need every one you can find. This project is going extremely well. Our Wheelie bin is already half full! Thank you bread-consuming WPS families! Keep on eating bread and sending the tags to school - we are desperately keen to be able to donate a wheelchair to a child who otherwise would have to remain lying on a bed for the rest of their lives. And now the big new venture: The ‘Cartridge Guy’ will be collecting used printer cartridges on Wednesday mornings at the recycling depot. Each child who brings a used cartridge will be rewarded with a monetary token which can be spent at the tuckshop. At the end of the term the class that has brought the most cartridges will be treated to a free Spur breakfast, arranged by the ‘Cartridge Guy’ and ‘Spur’. How’s that for a great incentive? A final plea: Please DO NOT drop off your bags randomly on the cricket/soccer field. Every week we find bags of glass bottles, plastic containers, tins, etc on the field. ONLY paper and cardboard may be placed on the field. The rest must be taken into the recycling enclosure and sorted into the correct bag. Leaving cans and glass on a field where children play sport is asking for an accident to happen!

Inter House Gala – Friday 21 November 2014 Our annual Inter House Gala will take place on Friday 21 November 2014 at 08:30. It is compulsory for all learners from Grades 4 to 7 to attend this last big sporting event for the year. Swimmers may only swim two individual strokes, the individual medley and the relays for their house. The team list will be available after the exams. As it can be quite a bewildering experience and a hot and tiring day, we suggest that children in Grades 1 to 3, who are not participating in the gala, stay at home. The foundation phase children who cannot stay at home may attend the gala with the older grades. Grade R to 3 children who do not attend will not forfeit their eligibility for a full attendance certificate. Learners in Grades 4 and 6 are to please supply a plate of eats for the parents. We look forward to an enjoyable day and invite all parents to bring their umbrellas and chairs and join us at this fun event.
