WATERKLOOF PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 18 – 2012

28 May 2012

From the Headmaster’s Desk Security Unfortunately security related issues, in various forms, once again seem to be a contentious issue in our feeder communities. Parents are requested to be vigilant in being safety conscious and when driving, place high emphasis on situational awareness.

Theft on School Premises Two cases of theft of soccer togs have been reported in the past two weeks. We urge parents to assist the school in reporting theft of personal property as soon as possible and to indicate date, and approximate time when the theft occurred. This will facilitate a more effective scrutiny on our CCTV system in identifying the culprits. We do speak to our children regularly on the exchange of personal property, the utilisation of personal property without a person’s permission, and the dire consequences of being caught stealing. Waterkloof Primary School has a stance of no tolerance towards theft and request parents to support us by having discussions with your children regarding getting involved in any form of these activities.

Maths Test

Mrs P. Biccard

A reminder that the Gr 4 – 7 Maths Term Test will be written on Tuesday 29 May 2012.

Blankets

Mrs J. Shee

Parents and children are reminded to please bring blankets to school for our ‘Winter Blanket Drive’. Many blankets have already been brought to school and these have been sent to Joe Caldeira of the Knights of Da Gama for distribution. A special word of thanks must be given to the Gr 4 Shee class; they have donated twenty eight blankets to date – well done children! Thank you to all children and parents who have donated blankets. Please keep them coming in!

Leapfrog glasses Thank you for all the spectacles that were sent in to support this project. An enormous number were collected and will be put to good use. Your generosity is much appreciated.

School Gardens

Mrs J. Shee

Parents are asked to please keep the school gardens in mind if you are thinning out your beds before spring. We would be most grateful to receive any transplantable plants that you may be throwing out.

Parent Day

Mrs J. Shee

Thank you to all parents who attended our Parent Day last week. The turn out was fantastic! We sincerely hope the discussions held between staff and parents were fruitful and will be of benefit to our children.

Technology Request

Mrs L. Eagle

The Grade 6 technology classes need wire coat hangers for a project. If you have some at home which are not needed, how about donating them to the Grade 6s? Please deliver them to Mrs Eagle at the Technology Centre where they will be most gratefully received.

RCL Cake ‘n Candy and Civvies Day

Mrs M. Ross

A very big thank you to our Gr 2 and 5 parents for their generous donations of ‘goodies’ for the RCL Cake ‘n Candy sale on Friday 18 May 2012. A total of R7531.00 was raised.

Grade 7 Application to High School

Mrs M. Ross

All government high schools have opened their applications for 2013. Please ensure that you apply for a place for your son/daughter as soon as possible. It is advised that application is made to more than one high school.

Ms K. Williams

Kendra Wilkinson entered the Pretoria Eisteddfod this year and is the overall winner for the Primary School Drawing category. Her self-portrait allowed her to win the drawing category. Kendra entered four drawings and got various certificates (A+ and A++) for her efforts. Well done Kendra – we’re very proud of you!

From the Sportsdesk

Mrs J. de Beer

Chess – Our chess team played their last league match for the term and ended on a high note by beating Doxa Deo Primary. Well done to these six up-and-coming players.

Netball – We played against Brooklyn Primary last week and were beaten in all our matches. We

have now completed the league matches and have two friendly games against St Paulus and the Pretoria Chinese School left. Soccer – Challenge Cup – our teams are all out of this cup, but did really well against very strong teams! The Open A team broke their losing streak and beat Springvale Primary School 3 – 2. Well done to them. The other teams had mixed results against Springvale Primary. Congratulations to Jason Phitides, who has been chosen for the North Gauteng Soccer Team.

Recycling

Mrs L. Eagle

In spite of the winter chill, recycle is alive and well at Waterkloof Primary School! Please remember to send your waste to school on Wednesday mornings. I would like to make three requests. 1. Please DO NOT place any containers, packets or boxes on the soccer field with glass in them. This is a hazard to children – please think before you dump! ONLY paper and cardboard waste may be placed on the soccer field, and all the rest of your waste must be taken to the enclosed area and placed in the designated bins. 2. Glass, plastic and tins must all be washed before bringing them to school. We are finding a lot of dirty containers and this is a health hazard to the children. 3. Collection of aluminium cans is separate from tin cans, and each must be deposited in their own bin. Please sort them before you bring them to school. Thank you for the effort you are making toward keeping a clean environment and saving space in our already overfull landfill sites. Keep collecting, reusing and recycling. B.J.
