WATERKLOOF PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 11 – 2015

25 May 2015

From the Headmaster’s Desk The Irene Birch Computer Centre It is with great pride that I inform you of the naming of our Senior School Computer Centre after Mrs Irene Birch who retired at the end of 2014. Mrs Birch has taught and served Waterkloof Primary School and its community for 28 years since 1986. A special assembly was held in the Frank Salmon Hall to unveil a copper plaque in her name, with the years of service indicated. Thank you once again Mrs Birch for the wonderful example you set for us and the years service rendered to our school. It is indeed an honour. Parents and children - know your school. WPS has five venues named after people who served the school in exceptional ways, namely - The Jim Brodie Swimming Pool : past parent; The Frank Salmon Hall : past headmaster; The William Bowker Technology Centre : past headmaster; The Anneke Lingenfelder Media Centre : past deputy headmistress; and the Irene Birch Computer Centre : past staff member.

Search and Seizure Raids at Schools We have received an official notice from the Department of Education giving notice of a stance of no tolerance on narcotics and the trafficking thereof on certain school premises and around certain schools Pretoria. “The District has received numerous drug related complaints and for this reason, unannounced search and seizure raids/operations will be conducted at schools. The raids will be conducted by the South African Police Services, Tshwane Metro Police, Department of Community Safety and the Department of Education:School Safety Directorate. The purpose of these raids are meant to deter the usage of illegal substances on school premises as well as the selling thereof. Should WPS receive such a raid, utter discretion will be used and it will only continue after proper consultation with the headmaster.

Thank you to all senior choir children who made music come alive at our JCC Winter concert. A thumbs up to a lovely musical evening. Thank you to Mrs de Beer and parents for all your support.

Musical Instruments made by Grade 4s The Grade 4 learners were extremely creative by making musical instruments from recycled materials as a Life Skills project. We are looking forward to having lots of “rhythmania fun!

Winter is on its way and our blanket drive is in progress. If you are at all able to, please send a warm blanket to school. All blankets will be sent to organisations who have come to rely upon our support of their efforts to assist the homeless during our cold winter months.
