Editor's Note Hey Key Clubbers! I hope everyone has been having a pleasant fall. Can you believe that 2020 is almost coming to an end? I certainly can't! Of course, your Crabinent has been busy with college applications, but we are never too busy for Key Club. I was glad to see many new faces at our meetings too, whether it be our Virtual Workshop or regular meetings. It's been a hectic two months, but I hope everyone is taking caring of themselves physically and mentally. With the weather getting colder, make sure to wear warm layers and get your flu shots! School definitely can get draining at times, make sure you create a safe space for yourself to rewind and relax too. If you need to talk to anyone, we are always here for you! Of course with the pandemic, things look different this season. With the holidays coming up, I hope you all still manage to find some way to connect with family and friends.

KEYI GUO Last but not least, I would like to thank everyone for continuing to contribute, from writing an article to allowing you submissions to be featured. Ultimately, all of your volunteering helps make the world a better place, no matter how small or insignificant you think it may be. Yours in service, Keyi Guo Editor of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

CRABINET DIVISION UPDATES DISTRICT UPDATES CALENDAR SERVICE SPOTLIGHTS MEMBER OF THE MONTH

PRESIDENT Hey Key Clubbers! I can't believe it's already been two months! Early college applications are already over, and boy am I glad! I noticed that a lot of you are getting more comfortable at meetings and joking around with the cabinet, which makes me so, so happy! Maybe some of you can take over Key Club when the seniors leave :) As always, make sure to keep doing virtual events! Volunteering is not one-and-done, but needs consistent effort to create change. I know it can be tiring and some days you'll lack motivation, but remember that you can always reach out to friends or any of the cabinet to vent out your issues. You can always reach us on Messenger, and you can always reach me specifically on Discord. I wonder how the rest of the year will look, but I'll get back to you guys after I submit some of my other college applications due in January :) Until then, make sure to show up to meetings! Yours in service, David Shi President of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

I want to say a big thank you to everyone that has attended our meetings, virtual events, and fundraisers. Though there are still no inperson activities, we hope our virtual meetings and events have brought some fun to your school life. It was really great seeing many new faces and names throughout the month, and we hope they had a fun time too! Now that StuyKC has adjusted to this new schedule, we will continue to deliver new events, fundraisers, and other opportunities to earn service hours while also having fun. So until next time, take care (^o^) / Yours in service, Jeffrey Huang Vice President of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

We will be revealing our new goal at our mid-November meeting so be sure to pull up. It's thanks to all your efforts that we came so far, so don’t forget to give yourself a pat on the back (◍•ᴗ•◍)✧*. I AM SO PROUD OF ALL OF YOU!!! Every time I fill out paperwork, I see your efforts which always make me happy. TREASURER Hello everyone! The first marking period is done and Halloween is over! If this was a normal year, I’d probably be hyped for the holiday season; Thanksgiving, Christmas, StuySquad, festive Key Club events, specialty drinks at Starbucks — the whole shabang. Even though we can’t have most of that this year, I’m still grateful that the people I know are safe and healthy. Zoom and writing fatigue is REAL, but we still got to churn through the hustle. Since early deadline for college applications, I’ve found more time to workout again and it’s feels good to be more productive. Lots more to do, we can’t get apathetic now! WEBMASTER Hello frens :) Phew it sure has been a stressful month. With the end of the marking period, college applications, and the election, I hope everyone is well and staying hopeful :)) For me, even though the grind has been difficult, I am super glad to Key Club — not only has it helped me relax by providing virtual events for me to unwind but also by introducing me to a family to vent to and chill with. It’s really wonderful to see everyone working so hard for our club, not only in terms of volunteering and service hours but also being able to see all your lovely faces at meetings all the time. Keep the grind up everyone! I hope to see each and every one of you guys at our next meeting <3 Yours in service, Constance Chen Webmaster of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

DISTRIBUTED Proofreaders

Distributed Proofreaders is one of those events that you don’t think you would like. I mean, I barely want to proofread my own essays as is, why would I want to proofread someone else’s writing. That’s where I was wrong, Distributed Proofreaders has every single genre of books and short stories possible. Whether you like science fiction or historical documents or something in between, you will find something you truly enjoy proofreading. For me, it was these series of science fiction books about meteoroids that could telepathically communicate with humans. Before I knew it, I was done proofreading 65 pages and ready to do more. Knowing that in doing this I was helping others access these amazing stories, only made me more motivated to continue :)

BEANBEANBEAN Michelle Lo

I’ve recently taken up BeanBeanBean as a way to be productive while also doing the most unproductive thing on my schedule — that is, binge-watching a show like there’s no tomorrow. As a newbie, it was one of my goals to get at least 1000 points for the Summer Bingo and so, with a show playing on one side and BeanBeanBean on the other, I got right on to it. After some failed streaks with my first game, I decided to try out “Spanish Vocab”, which I quickly settled into. Playing the game was a great refresher for my Spanish vocabulary and Spanish knowledge in general. After watching 10ish episodes in a row while simultaneously playing BeanBeanBean, I can testify that BeanBeanBean is an excellent way to contribute to a cause in a convenient way. I highly recommend trying it out, if you haven’t already, especially with a show to watch!

Victoria Chen

Essentially, all you have to do is answer questions, earning one bean per question right, and donate after reaching a multiple of 21. Simple, right? Well, I’m not proud to admit that it took much longer than it should’ve for me to realize this. Anyways, I did the “Times Tables” category because I’m good at math (or so I thought) and I tried to breeze through the questions, resulting in me getting more questions wrong than I care to admit and many beans being lost in the process…I had also made it my personal goal to fill the whole background with beans but after a lot of frustration and rage, I decided to just save my last bit of sanity. Overall, it was fun, and I totally haven’t developed an addiction to this or anything...I would definitely recommend, although I doubt you could possibly donate more beans than me. :)

Quarantine Stories

Zixuan Liu

How has/is the coronavirus affecting you? With school starting soon, I realized that life before quarantine will be hard to achieve again. I opted for remote learning, knowing that there won't be too much interactions going on at school, but staying at home 24/7 is also quite suffocating at times. Quarantine has made me reflect on myself more especially with college essays forcing me to think back on my life. I hope that Covid-19 goes away soon and give me my senior SING! and a normal senior’s second term to relax and enjoy.

Share some productive things you've done during quarantine I have been updating MRFs and y'all points regularly although scared that once school starts and the college season goes in grind mode I'mma slack but that's for later. I'm always happy your submissions! I've also been doing stretches everyday and flexible now!

I'm full to see feel more

Any fun things you want to do once quarantine is over? I want to go to the park and/or beach and enjoy the breeze without worrying about social distancing and getting corona. I just wanna chill now. I hope Mother Nature don't surprise us with anything anymore. No ambitions, just want normality.

Jenny Zhong

How has/is the coronavirus affecting you?

COVID-19 has actually been affecting my mom more than me because she works at a clinic. This means that my mom is even more careful about this whole situation which causes me to have to shower right after coming home and washing my hands after touching stuff brought back from outside. Moreover, we have to make sure to throw out our masks and not bring them into the house. My mom also makes sure that I stay an amount of distance away from people when we're outside shopping for food in the supermarket. Another thing is that I just moved which meant that we have to adjust to a new environment; this is especially hard when COVID-19 is going on.

26

Share some productive things you've done during quarantine I have been baking a lot of different foods from cakes to macaroons. I even attempted to make bred. I also have been doing a lot of free rice in my free time and I've been doing homework overall.

Alan Guo

How has/is the coronavirus affecting you? The last time I legitimately went out was the Friday before NYC schools were issued to close early. I remember most students taking the chance to skip class since COVID-19, then the Coronavirus, just became a possible concern for some families. The quarantine, done properly, is an opportunity to appreciate what you have and live with less. It was irritating at first, staying home when it seemed like everyone else was going out to see their friends and spending their summer "normally." There's also the other side, folks at home slipping into dark places in reaction to the world going into distraught. Neither are ways to handle the situation. There's no one right way, but I wished everyone would buckle down and take the quarantine more seriously. My parents haven't and won't let me out probably until the risks of going out at 0%, but honestly, I think that's the right call. I stopped complaining and focused on myself so that when I eventually can go out, I'll be the best version of myself. That means exercising, meditating, educating myself, and staying both physically and mentally healthy. My efforts will only heighten others' reactions to seeing their long lost friend. And I'll be patient while I greatly look forward to that day.

Any fun things you want to do once quarantine is over? In addition to my last quarantine submission, I've decided to grow out my hair as well! Not sure if I'll like it, but I'm using the opportunity to at least try something different. I'm also trying to get into photography. My uncle lent me his Canon EOS which I'm slowly getting more proficient at using.

Share some productive things you've done during quarantine Go out as much as possible before all the seniors and I have to go to college :(.

27

Adeeb Khan

How has/is the coronavirus affecting you? The effects of COVID-19 have impacted me in a series of so-called waves. When it first happened, I felt kinda relieved as I took quarantine as a chance to relax from the building stress of school at the time. I was still able to talk to my friends, (not in the person of course), and I had hopes that it would be over soon. However, as the virus continued to run its path, the realization hit me that we were going to be stuck quarantine for quite some time. We soon began our transition into remote learning which had consisted of live classes starting at around 9 am. I managed to develop a new sleep schedule and had efficiently managed my school work. Of course, it did take some time to get used to but overall, the experience wasn't all that bad. Additionally, the experience of quarantine made me develop a new set of habits regarding the cleanliness of myself and those around me. I would always keep track of the things I touched and the last time I had washed my hands. Moreover, when going outside, I would always make sure to keep my distance and wear my ask properly. All in all, quarantine has managed to impact my lifestyle in various ways both positively and negatively.

Any fun things you want to do once quarantine is over?

Throughout quarantine, I haven't been very productive for the most part. However, this had started to change when I learned of the Stuyvesant Key Club. As I started to learn of the various activities that the Key Club had to offer, I got myself invested in trying to do as many as possible. The whole concept of working for hours helped me keep track of how much work I was getting done. I had started to feel even more productive when I learned of the Key Club summer bingo event as it was practically a checklist that would show all the things that I've done. In other words, the more I filled out the bingo sheet, the more productive I felt.

Share some productive things you've done during quarantine

Due to the situation regarding COVID-19, stress has been placed on the act of social distancing and various indoor locations have been shut down. If everything does settle down, I plan on meeting with my friends more often at locations such as malls, restaurants, and recreational centers.

NOW PRESENTING KEY CLUB'S

29

MEMBER OF TH

ADEEB

After what felt like an excruciatingly long and unproductive summer, I decided to join Key Club in late August as a way to join some sort of community in Stuyvesant. After all, I hadn’t even experienced a day of school in Stuy as I was an incoming freshman at the time. At first, I thought this would just be your typical community service club with repetitive and uninteresting activities. However, I soon realized that this was not the case at all. As I explored Key Club’s vast array of activities and projects to choose from, I found myself engulfed in try

-ing out new things with the mindset that I was helping those in need while doing so. To further propel this sense of newfound productivity, the Key Club had recently proposed a bingo board that would encourage members to try out different activities to get different spots on the board. Whether it was by walking 10 miles through Charity Miles or by transcribing a certain amount of pages on Smithsonian, Key Club kept me occupied in a variety of ways. While doing these activities, I would get into calls with some of my friends and do the activities

together. These interactions would increase as we approached the start of our freshman year. As the first days of school passed by, the Key Club would continue to remain as one of my hobbies as I would attend the almost weekly meetings that the Key Club would hold and listen in on the cabinet members’ conversations. Not only did the Key Club make me feel more productive, but it also helped me cope with stress. By doing activities from Key Club, I was able to take my mind off of things and enjoy myself. Despite being in the Key Club for only about 2

months, I have found an interest in finding unique and fun ways to help those in need. All in all, the Key Club has greatly helped me to transition into my freshman year and I hope to make loads of new memories in the years to come.
