EDITOR'S NOTE

Hey Key Clubbers!

As always, the Locksmith is created by us but the contributions of every individual Key Clubber is not to be overlooked. Thanks to everyone submitting posters, writing Notes of Hope, filling out forms for the Locksmith, and just engaging with us! Only with your engagement does the Locksmith continue to flourish. Despite being apart in quarantine, you’ve all managed to keep the Key Club spirit alive. I do want to remind everyone that the quarantine stories is always open as there are always new quarantine stories to tell. Seeing everyone's faces at Induction made me quite sentimental of this past service year and our graduating seniors. Congratulations to everyone for finishing the school year! It’s been grueling but we made it. In addition, I must also address that these past two months have been marked by very impactful events. It is important that we do not remain ignorant. As Key Clubbers, we should utilize our platforms and lead this change. I encourage everyone to read the statements given by Key Club.

KEYI GUO Most importantly, I hope everyone is in good health, both physically and mentally. The Crabinet is always here if you need someone to talk to. The school year is over, and I can't wait for what the summer brings us. This past service year has been unique like no other, and I'm sure the 20-21 service year will also be one of its kind. Make sure to sign up for the new service year at http://bit.ly/stuykc-2021. Yours in service, Keyi Guo Editor of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

PRESIDENT Hiya Key Clubbers! I'm so glad that virtual school's over! I personally am so excited to use the time to do more of the things I love to do, like watch anime, play video games, or best of all, more Key Club events! I know that it's been months already of not seeing your friends face to face and you might even feel nostalgic from not going to school for so long, but stay strong! And do some Key Club events to feel better ;) We just held our very emotional induction and I can't wait to see what we can do over this summer! I'll truly miss all of the seniors and our memories and I hope that I can create some more cherished memories that our underclassmen can reflect on themselves!

VICE-PRESIDENT (~˘▾˘)~ Hi Key Clubbers ~(˘▾˘~)I Wish you are all doing well even though it has been forever since I've seen the light of day. Although this school year has ended on a rough term, I really urge you to have a positive mindset as things will turn for the better. So if you are at home, unmotivated and have no idea what to do, just know that it's fine, and many others are impacted in similar ways (I for example, no longer have a clue as to what day it is). But still try to have something to do, whether it be exercising, learning an instrument (I have picked up piano), or just play games with friends. To the seniors that will be leaving this year, I wish you all the best in college, and I know that you will succeed, as you have been through this place known as Stuyvesant. Thank you for being the ones for us to look up to when we were still immature and

JEFFREY HUANG unknowledgeable, for allowing us into your lives even though you didn't need to. Although your year has been cut short, you have the entirety of your life to make up for it, as your journey to adulthood starts now.

Yours in service, Jeffrey Huang Vice President of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

SECRETARY Hello everyone!!! School is finally over (Hurray!!), which means that all our Key Clubbers will have more time to pursue things they want to do, whether it be hobbies, learning something new, or just catching up on even more sleep! This is our well-deserved summer break. I shall stay productive during this time, and so shall you (•‿•) This past May and June were rough times, so give yourselves all a pat on the back for coming this far. Schools over, yet Key Club is not! We will continue to support our community even over the summer! Please continue to "attend" virtual events and donate to our GoFundMe page. Check our events doc for new events that our new projects committee is working on along with updates! We have already sent so much support to healthcare workers and people who need our encouragement, so we shouldn't

8

ZI LIU stop! We will be starting sign ups for the new school year soon, so stay on the lookout for that too! Let us know what you are planning to do this summer! And as always, let us know if you have any questions! Stay safe and happy volunteering!!! Yours in service, Zi Liu Secretary of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

Wasabi! (what's up b!) 2020 right? The past three years I've been in Key Club has flown by, and everything had built up to this turbulent year. I've had the opportunity to make a lot of memories, friends, and experience many new things so far. Fortunately, I've had great mentors to build me up along the way and in turn, help many others as well. We all had high expectations for the end of the past service year—the beginning of this current one too—but we're not leaving KC idle because of the restrictions of COVID-19.If anything, 2020 has opened our eyes. There is work to be done! Work for everyone to continue building our home, school, and community. We urge everyone to attend virtual events and fundraisers. To also continue educating yourself and others, staying healthy, and keeping a positive outlook. When it comes time for us to reunite safely, I know KC will strive to do even more to make up for the "lost time".

TREASURER

ALAN GUO Being the current Treasurer for this service year is truly an honor and a fulfillment of purpose. I'm positive that with all of our efforts, we'll reach even greater heights this year! Eager and itching to be back pumping out fundraisers and attending outside events with you all again. Until then, keep busy and help where you can ^-^! Yours in service, Alan Guo Treasurer of Stuyvesant Key Club Crabinet 2020-2021

WEBMASTER Hi y’all! I hope that everyone is doing well at home and finding ways to keep themselves busy. I know from personal experience that it is difficult to stay motivated but this does that mean that we are giving up. Although the options are limited, as cab members going to continue finding volunteer and fundraising opportunities for everyone and as club members, we are going to continue business as usual to find ways to help. And to the seniors: inductions were especially emotional this year and I want to thank each of you guys for welcoming me into this club and paving the way for us. I wish you guys the best of luck next year and that we can continue to stay in touch. I don’t plan on abandoning the legacy you guys have let and won’t let you down despite the setbacks <3.

Statement From New York District Key Club Regarding Recent Events

New York District Key Club would like to express our sadness and outrage over the events that led to the killing of George Floyd a week ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Floyd family and the families of the many individuals who came before him. As we continue to combat the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, we are reminded of the historical inequities and racial injustice that has been part of our society for far too long. It is moments like these that remind us that there is work to be done and that we must do better. We commit that New York District Key Club will work towards this end and will continue to live our core values of leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness. Our District is a strong network of 250 clubs and 12,000 members across New York. The District Board will discuss immediate actions to unite and engage our membership in opposing racial inequality and advancing social justice. We look forward to sharing more information soon on various projects and initiatives in which our members can participate and support. This moment demands action. Key Club has always been at the forefront of helping to lead and change our communities for nearly 100 years and we will continue to be a force for positive change.

Senior Appreciation If I had to choose a favorite memory, it would have to be the small things we lost from quarantine. Of course, I miss the big events like LTC but things like eating out with other Key Clubbers after events and fundraisers was something I took for granted. I now miss this time we spent together a lot, knowing that I could no longer take part as a graduating senior. Advice: If I had one word of advice for the underclassmen, it would have to be to never be afraid to just go for it. Whether it be pursuing a higher position in Key Club, going for that committee member position or even a district one, always know that fear of failure isn't something that should hold you back. There never is a "right time" per se so take advantage of everything while you still can, living without any regrets. And also for my rising seniors, work on your college apps early (this means in the summer) :) I'll be here for any college inquiries haha. Vincent Huang

Honestly, I don't have a favorite memory of Key Club. Every moment I spent with y'all were wholesome, fun, lovely, and memorable. However, if you were to ask me what my favorite fundraiser was, I would probably say Governor's Island. Why? Because I really enjoyed grilling everyone's head on the grill in the blazing sun.

Don't come back. Advice: Sleep, eat, and volunteer! Also, pull up to fundraisers to have fun. Don't be afraid to talk to people. Most importantly, follow your dreams (the kind you get from sleeping).

Evelyn Cao

Senior Appreciation Wow I can’t believe it’s been 2? 3? Years already with Stuy. Big shoutout to Vincent for being the best fundraising head & treasurer that anyone could’ve asked for. I miss working with you on fundraisers đ&#x;˜˘. Can’t wait for you to see you again. Y’all seniors will do great. Anthony Lim

I've barely just started to know you all when all this happened. And now you're already leaving us but I'm sure you'll come back for us!! Thank you for everything you've done for Key Club and to us crazy children, from going to events together to stressing out about out next tests. Can't wait to see what amazing things you'll do in college!!!

Zixuan Liu

Hey seniors! Congrats on completing four years of Stuy! Thank you for all of the service that you have done and good luck in your journeys ahead. All of you are amazing and you will be missed! Joline Huang

I wish you seniors all the best in college and life in general. I have no doubt that you all will become successful, compassionate, and selfless individuals. Thanks for everything you have done in Key Club and in Stuyvesant. You've been there as friends and you've always been nice to us younger folks. Roshani Shrestha

Vincent, I hope you already know that I appreciate you lots but just in case I sincerely appreciate you!!! I remember back in my freshman year when you encouraged me to select the Project Captain option on the Spring Feast form and look how far I’ve come since then! It was nice volunteering with you at Key Club events at 5 in the morning or exploring Queens and trying various amazing foods! Whether it be preparing me for interviews, making events so much more interesting or trying out my Google Forms you’ve always been there to help me! I cannot thank you enough so you better come back and do some events with me next year! I’ll miss you, my fellow farmer and mango lover but don’t forget us Key Clubbers when you’re in Boston.

Senior Appreciation To the seniors (then juniors) who attended the first KC event I ever went to, I just wanted to thank you guys for being the best type of people to have next to me at my first ever Key club event as a freshman. You guys were so nice, supportive, and funny (especially during our macarena dance :)) big shout out to Sandy! And to all seniors Key Club members: thank you so much for all the things you do to keep Key club afloat. It's hard to see you guys go but I know that you guys have a super bright future waiting ahead of you for you to attend to. Good luck and congratulations! Michelle Lo

Even though I got involved in Key Club pretty late, thank you for making it such an amazing year. I think I found my place, and it would not of been possible without you guys making this club feel like a family. Good luck on everything! Isabella Chow

Hi Evelyn & Vincent (: I'm really sad to see y'all leaving this year esp since you can't have that typical Key Club senior experience with COVID ): Thank u for everything you have done for the fundraising committee and Key Club in general <3. This service year rly won't be the same without y'all :'). I wish u the best of luck in college and make sure to visit! Ashley Tian

Hey seniors!! I don't really know what exactly to say but thank you so much. Thank you guys for giving me advice, both key club and school and life related and just being an inspiration. You guys have made Key Club so enjoyable and I hope we can live up to you guys. Congratulations on everything you have accomplished and best of luck for the future!! Sabrina Chen

Hey seniors! I'm so sorry that your senior year got cut off because of Covid-19 but I hope that, despite the challenges, you all had a great year! All of you have done such an amazing job in Key Club and in high school, and I know that you all will succeed in the future. Continue to volunteer and help your communities, cause we need that more than ever. Congratulations to the class of 2020 and I wish you all the best! :) Zifei Zhao

Chelsea Yan

To our healthcare workers, It must be really nice to see little babies everyday! I want to thank you very much for taking care of our little fighters!! Please remember to take care of yourselves too during these hard times!!! Thank you once again!!!

Dear doctors and nurses, During this national pandemic, the work you do is so important. And you excel at your work in every possible way. This has been a very difficult time for many of us, but it could have been much worse without your dedication.

Zixuan Liu Hello new parents! I hope that you are well! I can already imagine how cute your child is and what an amazing person they will become, so please don’t give up and know that you have the support from all of us all over the world! We believe in you!!!

Zijia (Jess) Zhang In these trying times, I hope that your family and you are doing well. In the words of French-Algerian writer and Nobel Laureate in Literature Albert Camus, “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, and invincible summer.” Stay strong!

Sending notes of hope to show support for parents of babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and their healthcare staff.

Yume Igarashi Healthcare workers, you are so powerful, at the very edge of a drive for prosperity in our society. You save lives at the brink of death, age, and injury, while also welcoming and guiding those who are new to this world. You are truly our greatest hope!

Yume Igarashi When parenting feels especially difficult to get through, please remember. Just like your baby, you are a new person, one who is learning beautifully the unique works of your new life and role. You are doing absolutely wonderful!

Yume Igarashi Healthcare workers, you are so powerful, at the very edge of a drive for prosperity in our society. You save lives at the brink of death, age, and injury, while also welcoming and guiding those who are new to this world. You are truly our greatest hope!

Yume Igarashi I was born after my sister, who was a stillbirth, premature, with missing genes. My mother has told me that now she sees it as a blessing, and that she will forever owe my sister for being able to realize the miracle of every child and life.

Yume Igarashi The road to and through parenthood may seem very trying, but weaved into it are priceless memories of the greatest appreciation, love, and inspiring achievements. To every parent: please confidently be proud of being such amazing, miraculous people who blessed the world with life, and appreciate every breath that your children take.

Quarantine Stories Jeffrey Huang In the beginning, I was pretty nonchalant about this quarantine thing, thinking to myself "I'm introverted so this is basically normal for me." The first few weeks were fine, I still communicated with friends and had Key Club things. But after a few months, things got boring and plain; I would wake up at 12:00, eat, watch videos, do homework, and sleep. I got tired of being inside with my computer. But I've found a new way to connect to friends through video games as well as learned to take care of my mentality through experimenting with new things.

Yume Igarashi The amount of exercise that I have been doing has decreased dramatically from when I went to school. From the daily commute, the ten flights of stairs, and my participation in the girls handball team during the spring term, routine circumstances made it naturally easy for me to exercise extensively during the day. The plank has been one of my primary methods of exercising at home, since it leads to the minimal amount of noise and motion against our rather creaky floors. I think participating in the Charity Miles event was one of the most productive things that I have done during quarantine. It motivated my friends and I to exercise in such a healthy, positive way. The event pushed me to literally go an extra mile or three when I 30 took a walk.

I've begun taking up the piano again a few weeks ago. I had nothing to do and wanted to occupy my mind with something. So I decided to learn a new song on piano, Your Lie in April OST. Still learning so gonna see how that goes. I also want to continue learning coding languages for app development since I just finished a mentorship program for that. Our family has been eating together way more frequently than before, and the communication and bonding that we have experienced between ourselves have been very meaningful. I have also done more arts and crafts during quarantine. The amount of sleep and rest that I am getting has increased dramatically, and this has helped me be more awake and energized than when I went to school, although perhaps the reason I feel more energized is more due to the inordinate amounts of ice cream and seaweed I have been eating.

Quarantine Stories Alan Guo

Being quarantined at home made me feel trapped and distraught at first. Missing out on all my extra curriculars, not being able to step foot outside my house, and being stuck with a family that often times doesn't get along, it was all depressing. Being updated with the news of COVID-19 death tolls, blm protests, the Yemin crisis, and etc. made it seem like the world was going to end. However, even with the struggles everyone is facing, finding positivity in the lifestyle we're forced to follow is important. I've been doing virtual events and logging the distance I move during my morning workouts for Charity Miles. though remote learning is over, I still wake up early at around 6AM to work out and sleep before 12AM to feel a bit better about my otherwise stagnant lifestyle. I've also been eating healthier and making sure to drink plenty of water!

I hope I can work with my fundraising directors to make fun activities so we can meet up with key clubbers around NY again. Hopefully summer volunteering events will also be possible, but I really do just want to spend time with my freinds again. I also am excited to meet the incoming freshmen in person. I'm a Big Sib and it has been difficult for us to give the freshmen the experiences of Camp Stuy and other events, but we're still trying to give them the best possible transitition into Stuyvesant.

Ashley Tian Sometimes, the day feels really short because I wake up at 1 but then I also don't sleep until 4 in the morning so my sleep schedule has been reversed in a sense kinda like jet lag đ&#x;˜”. I've also been significantly less productive and each day feels the same đ&#x;˜?, literally all I do is watch tiktoks, netflix, eat, sleep, and repeat . I miss my friends a lot which i think goes for everyone, but I think it's worth it if it means flattening the curve and preventing the spread to those that are considered high risk (: I started baking but I'm really bad which sucks ): I think that might be because I eyeball everything since I don't have any measuring cups đ&#x;˜…. I've always been a skincare fanatic, but lately I've been investing a lot more time in it and watching skincare youtube vids LOL. Also, I've been reading a lot more which I 31 didn't have the time before.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Yume Igarashi 32

Key Club’s virtual events have provided amazing ways to engage myself, interact with others, and to grow while having fun with new experiences, all from the comfort of my room and a cup of hot Earl Grey tea in my hands. The motivation to volunteer from my house pushed me to exercise exponentially more than what I would have accomplished without events such as March of Dimes. Key Club has not only assisted me as I tried to be an involved member of the community, but also as I tried to pay the price of trying all of the ice cream flavors that were on sale in the grocery store. This, added to facts like being able to give thanks and morally support the heroic essential workers from my couch, have contributed to a profound realization that I had really underestimated just how much can be achieved from home. During times like these, feeling actively connected with the world and maintaining comforting, interdependent relationships are increasingly difficult goals to attain. But perhaps because of this, the nourishing power and inspiring potential weaved into the act of community service have become ever more apparent. The world is now being forced to admit that peace, health, and equality are rights that often don’t feel like they are rights for many. Volunteering can be a lens through which one can focus on the most valuable things that we all need, and through which these human rights can be salvaged and sincerely returned to those who were deprived of them. In return, volunteers are also automatically rewarded through these actions themselves, feeling the honor of being able to charitably offer help. It is a great thing to appreciate that, as tragedies seem to call for more of their kind this year, there is a completely different kind of positive feedback loop always at work for humanitarian blessings, a system illuminated by what Key Club has always strived to do.
