Letter from the President Reach out to Jenna at jfoo@stuy.edu

Hi guys! I hope you guys are having a good second semester so far despite the suckiness of program changes! A lot of exciting things are happening as we get closer to the end of the service year. The application portal for the Distinguished Key Clubber Award is out, a noncompetitive award given to Key Clubbers who have showed dedication and passion to service this year. I strongly encourage you guys to apply if Key Club has had a large impact on you because it’s always really nice to be recognized for your hard work (and you get a pin!). The recipients of the DKC award are announced at LTC, our annual trip to Albany where Key Clubbers from all over New York gather. Speaking of LTC, I’m very close to finalizing the list of members who will go and if you’ve been chosen, you’ll be getting an email soon! Finally, T-shirts should be here by February 15th, which means we’ll be taking our group photo wearing our matching T-shirts most likely the week after break. Everyone is welcome to come even if they don’t have a shirt - just wear blue or any other Key Club apparel! :-]

Letter from the Vice Prez Reach out to Penny at pwang00@stuy.edu

Hi guys, I hope y'all had a nice Lunar New Year. LTC is coming up very soon and our committees are hard at work making sure that we get many awards. Our art committee finally updated the bulletin board and is preparing to make an amazing scrapbook! Also, our web and video committee is preparing a new recap and video for LTC. On top of that, our fundraising committee and public relations committee are busy preparing for our next fundraiser. We also can't forget about our new projects committee, which is always looking for new events! I can't wait to have an amazing rest of the service year with you guys!

Letter from the Treasurer Reach out to Freya at fzhu10@stuy.edu

Hey guys! Dang, it has been a while. This month was crazy but was also a productive one. In January, we held our one-of-a-kind BounceU Fundraiser. Despite being a smaller scale fundraiser, we were able to raise a decent amount of money! This was all made possible due to the help of my lovely directors, Vincent and Alan, my favorite committee, the fundraising committee, and all of you guys for attending! The total amount we raised from the fundraiser is $501! All of these proceeds will be donated to the Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation! I want to thank everyone for coming to this fundraiser and supporting us. I hope that you guys will come to our next Board Game Fundraiser which is only 2 blocks away from Stuyvesant and we will be selling bubble tea and a lot of baked goods! That's all for now and I hope everyone will continue to support our club for the remainder of this service year and the ones after!

Letter from the Secretary Reach out to Jason at jxiong10@stuy.edu

Hey guys! It is officially 2019 and sadly, the service year will be ending in a few months! The ending of a service year also brings LTC, our annual Leadership Training Conference! At LTC, there are lots of awards and one of them that you guys should all apply for is the Distinguished Key Clubber Award. The award is non-competitive and I made a guide to help ease the award process so you should definitely apply. The new year brings more events for everyone to attend so be sure to check them all out! The New Projects Committee has been hard at work to organize events for y'all. Event hours are up to date but as always, if there are any issues, email us or feel free to message me. Committee hours will be updated soon as well hours for Locksmith submissions, I apologize for how outdated those hours are. That's all I have for this month, hope y'all didn't break your New Year's resolutions yet and I hope to see at a meeting or an event soon!

Letter from the Webmaster Reach out to Tiffany Zhong: tiffany.zhong123@gmail.com

Hey Key Clubbers!! I just wanted to give a big thank you to everyone who ran and voted in our 2019 election. It really meant a lot to us, the cab, to see how many people showed up to help shape the future of our club. I’m excited for the newlyelected cabinet members to expand Stuy Key Club while maintaining an inclusive environment. With the Brooklyn Game Lab fundraiser coming up I hope to see you all there!

Letter from the Editor Reach out to Rachel at rjoh10@stuy.edu Hey I hope you all are enjoying the break! As always great thanks to the locksmith committee and everyone that sent in pictures/articles. Please continue to sign up to be a writer, you get extra points for writing a paragraph that takes less than 30 minutes :0 What a steal!! Don't forget to come to our fundraiser this Saturday the 23th (please help fund for out LTC trip :]

GLOBAL GAME JAM DAY

BROOKLYN JAPANESE NEW YEAR FESTIVAL

By Vincent Huang The one thing that stood out to me most on this day was the extreme cold. Making my way to the Brooklyn location was difficult with the freezing temperatures and wind chills but this didn’t stop me from having a great time. Key Club events are always worth it, especially festivals. I had gone to Japan Day in the past, which was organized by the same group, so I knew what was in store for me was sure to be fantastic. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the festivities taking place: there were games, decorating stations, bento boxes available for purchase, an area where attendees could dress in kimonos, and even a VR station where the viewers could explore Japan. I was awed by the sights and even better than that, I received a free bento box coupon.

I was put in charge of watching over the children second floor to make sure they weren’t leaning over the balcony. This was definitely an important job for their safety and from the second floor, the bottom was a great view. On the stage, the event organizers were making mochi with a large hammer and later on, there was even a performance with a robot and samurai. It was very entertaining for the children and the volunteers. Soon enough, I was put in charge of the VR station while another volunteer was getting lunch. It was amazing to see the line of children who were all so excited to witness the culture of Japan, and I heard them excitedly exclaiming “Oh, there’s Pikachu” or “Look, a sumo wrestler!” My favorite moment came after, however, when I finally got to eat the bento box, which had fried chicken and a potato salad and so much more. Through cleaning up the venue was hectic, the organizers were extremely thankful, which made the help we gave feel all the more special. Overall, this event was a very memorable volunteer experience and I definitely encourage others to come in the future.

MLK DAY OF SERVICE

MEET ME IN MALAWI

By Penny Wang I remember a cold, chilly morning, walking through a familiar part of Brooklyn near Dumbo. I finally found the event place, a barn-shaped looking building in the middle of factory-looking buildings. However, when I walked in, it felt more like a cultural center filled with arts and crafts and chickens-I felt like I was sitting in a farm. My main task was helping kids make special Malawian kites that they could hang up on the wall. However, a lot of them just drew random stuff on the kites. There were other activities, like chicken tic-tac-toe, adopting a chicken, and making scarves. There was also breakfast and I had the best bagels ever. I can't forget the amazing music and cute children there! I got closer to alot of Key Club members at this event and even though it was in Brooklyn, I really enjoyed it!

Women's March

By Ashley Tian The Women’s March took place on Saturday, January 19, 2019. Protestors braved the cold as they marched from Upper West Side all the way to midtown Manhattan, carrying signs and posters not only supporting women’s rights, but the rights of all people including but not limited to the LGBTQ community. Protestors also advocated for causes such as an improved healthcare system, immigration reform, etc. There were chants and music, but most importantly, there were people. The positive energy emanating from the crowd was almost contagious and continued throughout the entire march. I was extremely excited about this event since it was my first ever Women’s March. My favorite part perhaps was reading all the signs with their creative and eye catching slogans. I specifically remember one with the words, “WE GRAB BACK” written in bolded letters over the silhouette of a cat. Though I found this event to be very empowering and inspiring, my energy drained away quickly and all I wanted to do was sit down. My feet ached with each step I took and my teeth would not stop chattering. The fact that I was starving didn’t help with the situation either. Nevertheless, this event was truly a learning experience and I would love to march again next year.

Member of the Month

Constance Chen

If I were to go back in time and told myself about the progress I made in Key Club, I would have never believed it. I remembered I first joined Key Club in freshmen year because I thought it would be super low commitment. I never went to a lot of events because they always seemed so overwhelming. Waking up at 6 AM to travel for two hours to stand outside in the cold or heat and do work did not seem worth it to me. But things changed sophomore year when I realized that most events are actually pretty fun (especially the themed events). I started to go to more events which, of course, led me to get to know more members which lead me to go even more. I began to become excited whenever new events were available and before I knew it, Key Club became an important part of my life. This may sound cheesy but it has allowed me to give back to my community while also de-stressing and hanging out with my friends. Honestly, I can’t even imagine what my sophomore year would be like without
