Letter from the President Reach out to Jenna at jfoo@stuy.edu

helloo! thank you all for a great 2018, we’ve accomplished so much as a club and its all because of you guys! The start of the new year is always really exciting because it means that we’re slowly starting to prepare for the next service year! Our club elections will be taking place in late January/early February. If you’re interested in running for a cabinet position, feel free to reach out to me or any of the other cab members A member of our club (tbd) will also be running for Lieutenant Governor of our division, so pull up to the January Divisional on the 31st to root her on! Finally, be sure to fill out our t-shirt form if you want a club t-shirt. It was designed by our art director Kelly and it’s REALLY CUTE so make sure to order one!

Letter from the Vice Prez Reach out to Penny at pwang00@stuy.edu Hey guys! I hope break has been restful and amazing. Unfortunately, we're back at school! Even though we're down to the last few weeks of the semester, the KC grind doesn't stop. Our bulletin board will hopefully be updated soon by the Art committee, so watch out for that. ALSO, our committees are hard at work advertising and preparing for our BounceU fundraiser, so stay posted for that too! I can't wait to see you guys at our next meeting!

Letter from the Treasurer Reach out to Freya at fzhu10@stuy.edu Hey everyone! Â I hope these past few days of school havent been too hard for everyone. Most of my updates were in the last update so you guys can just read that for information on past fundraisers. This month, we will be holding a fundraiser at BounceU with all the proceeds going towards the Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation. Its going to be after finals so it's a great way for all of us to distress and have fun! I hope to see you guys there!

Letter from the Secretary Reach out to Jason at jxiong10@stuy.edu Hey Key Clubbers! Wow, December sure flew by real fast. I hope everyone had an amazing break and is ready for 2019. 2018 had an such a productive year in terms of service, which is absolutely incredible. This year was a year of many changes and we all had our fair share of laughter and tears in Key Club. In December, we had some really fun holiday events and an amazing Spiderman fundraiser (shoutout to our amazing treasurer). Our New Projects committee are also working hard over break to prepare a lot of events for us to volunteer at in January and February! If you are someone who checks the hour spreadsheet often, you will know that I updated a lot of the hours, yay! There are still a few more events I need to collect info for but most of it is updated whoopee! Coming up in a few months is LTC and in case you don't know, there is a non-competitive award called the Distinguished Key Clubbers award. I am currently in the process of organizing event information and making a guide to make applying for the DKC an easier process. Stay tuned for that! I hope everyone had a great time celebrating the holidays and the new year and I look forward to seeing y'all in 2019!

Letter from the Webmaster Reach out to Tiffany Zhong: tiffany.zhong123@gmail.com

Hi guys and gals! Happy New Year!! Now that we’re well rested from the break I hope we can continue to grow as a club. I appreciate seeing all of your faces, old and new, at the past few meetings, as it means a lot to see how much our club has grown over the past year. Thank you to everyone who came to our last meeting to support our two wonderful candidates running to represent our school at the LTG elections. Don’t forget to pull up to the January Divisional at Bronx Science to support our very own Freya Zhu! I hope to see all of you guys at the BounceU fundraiser

Letter from the Editor Reach out to Rachel at rjoh10@stuy.edu Hey All, Welcome back from the break! I know it's hard readjusting your schedules and all but don't forget to go to events! I hope you all are enjoying the break (enjoy it while you can). As always, I'll like to thank everyone who sent in pictures/articles and the locksmith committee. Don't forget to go to events! PS. HOLIDAY MANIA

By Penny Wang Right before break started, I wanted to get into the Christmas spirit and attend this event. Upon arriving at the event, I saw fellow Key Clubbers dressed up as reindeers, Santa Claus, and elves. Small kids were happily doing activities at different tables scattered across the school’s gym. At first, I went to wrap gifts-these gifts were given to kids who had collected 5 stickers from doing activities. There were bats, boxes of dolls, etc. After wrapping presents, I went around to look at the activities and there were crossword puzzles, Christmas tree making, cookie and cupcake stands, cookie sled-making, and a bunch of other fun activities. This was a very fun event and it made me destress from school and get into the Christmas spirit. I enjoyed helping to run this event and allow kids to enjoy their childhood, especially because I never attended such events as a child. There’s nothing else I would prefer to do a week before Christmas.

Big Apple Half Marathon

AUTHENTIC LEATHER

By Irene Chen The Big Apple Half Marathon was a typical marathon/race event, which meant that in the winter, it’s cold and not the most pleasant. I got to the event late with two friends to a large Gatorade station. Stuy Key Club was assigned to this spot, but with 7-8 other volunteers covering the three tables, more help wasn’t needed. And so, my friends and I decided to take up a spot a little down the road from the station, out of the runners’ way, to cheer. We applauded them, praised them, and cheered them on with our “Good job!”s and “You’re almost there!”s. We also decided to line up and start giving out high fives in a row. Despite the cold, talking to the other volunteers was fun and seeing the smiles on the runners’ faces made the event worth it. Although marathons and races might seem like a boring event, it’s inspiring to watch all these people run a 5k or even one mile when it’s something not everyone can do, including me. It wasn’t my first time cheering at an event, and this definitely won’t be my last. Cheering seems tedious, but it’s gratifying to be able to encourage people on something that takes so much endurance.

Kwanzaa BCM

Christmas at the GardenÂ

By Sabrina Chen When I first arrived at QBG, volunteers were warmly welcomed with snacks and festive music. Then we were split up for different roles such as arts and crafts, monitoring the gift shop, face-painting, etc. I was assigned to the arts and crafts section. There were booths including ornament making, leaf bunching, beeswax candle making, etc. For the entire day, I taught kids how to make christmas ornaments using dried oranges or lemons, beads, cinnamon sticks, and string. Teaching the kids felt really rewarding since many seemed really happy to be there and making crafts. There was a decent amount of kids there so I wasn’t bored or overwhelmed. In fact, this event was one of the funnest events I have ever been to, mainly because of how laid-back, but still interactive it was. The atmosphere of the event was very relaxing thanks to all the friendly people there. I would definitely recommend going to this event!

DOWNTOWN MATH INVITATIONAL

By: Charlotte Nour Kastoun  I walked into the school at 8am sharp. The minute I stepped through the doors I was lost in a sea full of people. After a few moments of confusion, I managed to orient myself and to find the other key club volunteers. We helped direct the teams towards the auditorium, and then we were sent to Lecture Hall B to wait for contest papers to grade. For a little over an hour, we sat in Lecture Hall B, doing homework, talking, and helping in any way we could. If we got a phone call from a proctor saying that their room needed more scrap paper, one of us would run up to deliver it. Finally, an announcement came over the loudspeaker, declaring that this portion of the competition was over. I jumped out of my seat, and with the other volunteers, raced up to my assigned floor to collect all the envelopes containing the answer sheets. Then, I raced back down to Lecture Hall B to grade the tests. This event was both fun and surprising. Scoring the answer sheets definitely gave me more perspective on how difficult and tedious it can be to grade tests. I left the event feeling tired from repeatedly sprinting up and down the stairs, but I was also glad that I had come and helped out at this competition.

Member of the Month

Emily Zheng I first joined Key Club because all my friends encouraged me to do so but I didn’t expect it to be so fun and that I would love being in it. I've met so many new people through Key Club and became friends with them. It's so nice to help our community while hanging out with our friends at the same time! I've also became more outgoing because of Key Club; it encouraged me to actually ask people for directions instead of wandering around lost. Joining Key Club has made me happier and I'm really thankful to the club and its members.
