Greetings From Your Editor Hello Stuyvesant Key Club, It’s summer now! How do you feel? We had 2012—2013 service year induction in June. The induction is an end of a remarkable year and a start of new chapter. I know everyone is looking forward to having a better service year and cannot wait to devote your enthusiasm and energy into volunteering. Bensonhurst Clean-Up Event
Date: Monday, July 15 Time: 10 am. to 1:00 pm. Project captain: Bonnie Lee Meet-up Location: 29 Bay 25th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11214 Clean-up Location: 86th Street between 18th Ave. & 25th Ave. Description: We will be cleaning up the streets of Bensonhurst. Tools & materials have been provided by the NYC Department of Sanitation. Pizza and service credit will be given to volunteers.
Induction
Induction (6/20) June 20, 2013 was the first major event organized by the new Key Club Cabinet members of the 2013-2014 Stuyvesant School year. This was also the official Key Club officer induction ceremony. Running from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, it was one of the biggest and most successful events of the year, bursting with club pride and enthusiasm. The new Cabinet was hardworking. They arrived on the scene, at the Lok Ting Restaurant chosen by Vice President Wendy Huang, two hours earlier to prepare the tables and ready the certificates to be distributed to the members. Regardless of the stuffy Chinatown air, they diligently signed all of the papers, folded all of the shirts, and arranged all of the tables to be used in the induction. Guests arrived on point starting at 2PM, most dressed in elegant attire. They waited around the tables specially set aside for them, indicated by name tags, as some of the members worked the sound onstage. Everything was set and going by 2:30 PM. Food was beginning to be served and members enjoyed themselves as they were called up to claim their certificates, each having accomplished at least 25 hours of service during the 2012-2013 Key Club service year. Induction -continued from page 4Over 60 guests, and not even all Stuyvesant Key Clubbers, attended the induction. This included the 6 old Cabinet members and the 6 new ones, save Bonnie Lee, the old Vice President and current acting President of Stuyvesant Key Club. It was an emotional scene, as the older members handed over their positions to the newer ones, with speeches accompanying each, and President Bonnie Lee teared as she delivered the farewell speech to the old Cabinet. This has certainly been the most successful induction yet, and serves as a good indication of what the following service year is to be like. By Wei Hou Wu
Induction INDUCTION (6/20) To wrap up the 2012-2013 school year, our cabinet members organized an induction ceremony that took place in Chinatown at Lok Ting Restaurant on June 20. The induction symbolizes the end of a successful service year and the beginning of an even better one. The new cabinet members took this opportunity to thank the previous cabinet members and to bid them farewell, for most of them were seniors and had graduated from the Stuyvesant community. In exchange, the previous cabinet members formally passed on their duties to their underclassmen, wishing them good luck in their new positions. The induction is also a time for the Key Club members to congratulate themselves for spending so much time giving back to the community. Members who completed over twenty-five hours of service received certificates stating their commitment to the club. This year, Stuyvesant Key Clubbers collectively volunteered for over 3600 hours, which is equivalent to about five straight months of service. We hope that the upcoming service year will be just as successful and productive, if not more. Over sixty Key Clubbers, not just from Stuyvesant, came together to congratulate the inducted and to reunite with friends from other high schools. They spent the afternoon eating, chatting, listening to music, taking pictures, and making unforgettable memories. It was a ceremony to remember, a token of appreciation for those who volunteered, and an end of another chapter of Stuyvesant Key Club’s long journey. By Jane Chen
Event On June 30th, 5th avenue was lined with people on the sidewalk, anticipating the start of the parade. At noon, the cue was given and the first group of participants set off to march down 5th avenue. This was the scene at the 43rd annual NYC Pride March. The march celebrates New Yorker's pride of all sorts, but most notably LGBT pride, the main focus of this march. DOMA had just been repealed and the participant's spirits were through the roof in celebration. We arrived before noon to help set up the parade by handing tshirts to group leaders and making sure that all marchers were prepared in their designated setup places. While we were volunteering, we couldn't help but notice the multitude of ways people celebrated pride. There were rainbow shirts to represent equality, costumes that showed cultural pride, and dancers that expressed themselves through the way they moved. It was a sight that you wouldn't find anywhere else.
PRIDe March (6/30) We assigned to be in charge of the Caribbean-American Pride group. This group had so much energy that you could hear them from blocks away. They blasted Caribbean music from the many speakers on their truck and they danced happily to it. Our job was to make sure that they kept in pace with the rest of the groups in the march. This proved to be quite difficult because the crowds on the sidelines would all cheer and shout when this group passed by. They would then stop and dance, always with tons of energy. As we approached the end of the parade, there was a feeling of relief that we had completed the 3-mile long march. What made our day was that the leader of the Carribean-American Pride group thanked us for volunteering. Those words of thanks is what makes us want to continue helping and providing service to our community. By Danny Qiu
