A Word from our Vice President! Something I Learned From a Seventeen Magazine By: Victoria Tsang Do not join a club or any extracurricular activity just because it “looks good” on college apps. That is complete farce and not to mention, a bit idiotic. Yes, colleges may want a “well-rounded” individual, but they also want someone with a personality, someone who is different. I mean everyone (at least the ones you will be competing against to get into those big named schools) has extracurricular activities, sports, high grades, and all that stuff colleges supposedly look for in potential students. But what the people who sit in the air-conditioned office known as the admissions office want is passion and individuality. Nothing boring or generic, but something interesting and fresh. To get into the school of your choice, you need to show them what they’ll be missing if they don’t accept you. It’s all about being alluring and persuasive. Then, slap on some really good teacher recommendations to the outstanding essay and you have almost got yourself a one-way ticket to the college of your dreams. But obviously, it’s never THAT easy. As much as I hate it, grades are an important part in the college process. So, all the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors out there better whip themselves into shape soon or else it’ll be too late.
It may seem weird that I’m writing about all this, but it has suddenly occurred to me that in less than six months I’ll be going through the process. And honestly, it is really scaring me. I was the typical underclassman who did not believe I had to work hard the first two years, but I was so wrong. Now, I have to work extra hard to boost up my average and that just sucks. So, I hope no one makes the same mistakes as me because the first two years do count, and they count a whole lot too. It seems like this is a good place to end this rant/lecture (I don’t really know what this is actually), so have a good day people.

I'm a junior at Stuyvesant High School and this year, I'm running for Key Club treasurer. I joined Key Club roughly a year and a half ago and, ever since, I've learned so much about Key Club and about the importance of service and returning to the community. Last year, I participated in as many Saturday and Sunday events as I could, most of the Sunday events being NYRRs. I thoroughly enjoyed them and continued throughout the year to regularly attend events. I was also a part of KC art committee and helped create the beautiful scrapbook of keys. This year, I didn't quite get the chance to be as dedicated to Key Club as I was last year but I've attended as many events as a schedule would allow and I've been an active member in USACF. Half of my life is Key Club – and I truly hope it becomes so much more. I want to be a leader in returning the love that my community has given me unconditionally, in returning and giving more
to the world I grew up in.

A treasurer's duty revolves around strong organization, time-keeping, management, and charisma. As a junior, I've gone through a term of ruthless schedules – everyday is filled with some sort of after-school activity and, usually, those activities conflict. I'm part of the Ultimate Frisbee Team as well as the AllCity High School Marching Band (ACMB), both of which have practice at the same time every Saturday. So far, I've been keeping up with both and haven't gotten myself confused with anything of the sort. I can very easily say that I am extremely organized and can manage a load of bits of anything. I can also be assertive to the point where I am almost coercive. I con-

I joined Key Club the first week of my freshman year. I knew very little about the club at the time, other than they didn’t actually make keys! However, my three years here have taught me a thing or two about what Key Club actually means. Sure, we do community service, but there is a reason we have more members than any other club in Stuy. It’s all about getting out there, making new friends, having fun, and doing some good in the process.
Also, in the three years I’ve been here, I’ve watched many cabs come and go. I’ve worked closely with many of the members, so I pretty much know the job backwards and forwards. And I can count well (just ask Dr.Chen) which is always a plus when dealing with money! Throw in the fact that I’m a Jew by birth (we’re practically born counting coins) and you’ve got yourself a grade-A treasurer!
So, this year I’ve decided to run for treasurer of Key Club. Why treasurer? Well, first of all, I love fundraising! I’ve taken part in all kinds of fundraisers. And my kitchen is in a constant state of chaos from all the goodies I make for bake sales. I figure it’s a small price to pay for putting smiles on people’s faces, sugar in their tummies, and most importantly, some money into our treasury. In the future, I hope to put together a more elaborate fundrais-

I know what you’re thinking. Yet, I’m not sure you are looking at it right. You’re looking at all those events I’ve been to. You’re thinking, “Damn…the kid is a beast. Look at all the events. He wants to look good on college app”. The next thing you might think is, “How many points does he have? 10K?”. Yeah I do but truth is, that number is pretty meaningless. I do a lot for Key Club not for me but for the community and the people we help. I help out within Key Club so we can be a better and stronger club. As web committee head, I had a lot to do such as keeping the website up to date and most of the tasks usually involved the editor. Victor taught me how to handle the website and I learned a lot about the committees he has to watch over. An editor must not only preside over web but also locksmith committee which I am a regular contributor because I want the club to
know what’s going on. Once again, keeping the club with the current news is very important and Victor sure has done a good job with that. I feel like I’m ready to continue what Victor has done as editor. Key Club Editors have perfected being leaders, organized, and helping the club in the best ways. I can’t give a club something that it already perfected, I can only continue that good job that has been done and sometimes fix problems that happen. I have the skills such as organization and good with computers to be a good editor. You think I’m a beast from a big number but really, I’m just another dedicated Key Clubber here. My mission isn’t to be the best or look awesome on some form; I just continue the awesome job done by Key Club’s line of editors. It’s a big job, but I got the hang of it. Points: 10670
Editor Candidate: Jennifer Kuo When I first joined Key Club, I never imagined myself running for editor. In fact, I didn’t think that I would be this involved. However, as I went to more and more events and met more people, I started to enjoy it. Key Club was a way to help other people as well as have fun. It was never about the points. Whenever I hear people say “do we
get points for this?” I have the urge to respond “points don’t matter.” The reward for helping other people should be the good feeling of knowing that you’re helping others. I often hear people wonder why an editor is needed. What would he edit? People?

I believe that I can continue what our current editor, Victor, has been doing. I can think of new ways to improve the committees and continue to help them and in effect, improve Key Club as a whole. For one thing, I would get more people to read the Locksmith, such as printing out paper copies. I believe that letting Key Clubbers be more in-
teractive would help Key Club grow. When people read about events, it lets others see what their fellow Key Clubbers are doing. It also sparks interest in events that they might otherwise find uninteresting. All in all, I’m just like everyone else. I’m not perfect and I won’t try to pass myself off as being perfect. Editor Candidate: Xu Yu HELLO fellow KEY CLUBBERS! My name is Xu Yu and I am currently running for the position of Editor. For those of you who know me, I’m counting on your votes, and for those that don’t, here’s your chance to get to know me a little better. Key Club has always been a great service club, providing tons of events for fellow members to attend. Each event is unique and quite dif ferent from the one before and after. Some events that I’ve attended include helping repaint the doors and interiors of Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, sorting out medical supplies as a part of Doc To Dock, and interacting with little kids in a playful manner to help them create cute, little paper bag puppets. Also I was the project captain for the Puppetry Arts events, which shows my responsibility. If I do become Editor, I will be more than will-
ing to submit at least four articles to the Empire Key. All the contact information of club officers, advisors and the lieutenant governor will be provided in each newsletter and will be all accurate and up to date; so that you guys can reach them if you have any questions, problems, or concerns. AS Key Club Editor, I will keep everyone updated on the club, district, and even international news. I will also try my best to publish newsletters biweekly. As a neat person, I have the ability to keep our club’s newsletter organized. Angie Koo (left) and Amy Guan (right). Name: Amy Guan Grade: Sophomore Position: President Biography: BOOMBA!!! Hey Key Clubbers!!! As you know, I’m running to become the next president of Key Club. I’ve been a Key Clubber since freshman year. To tell the truth, I started off joining just because my friends joined. But as I began attending events, contributing to causes I believed in, I found that my half-hearted interest in Key Club had grown into a passion. I loved becoming more involved in the world outside school. I realized that even though I was just one person, I could help, and that made an incredible impact on me. One event that taught me this lesson was the AIDS Walk that some of you might remember, in April last year. It was such hard work! My friends and I woke at 4AM, and worked controlling the traffic and cheering walkers on. By the end of the day, I was exhausted, but without a doubt, it was one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences. The Dragon Boat Festival was wonderful as well. I went home with a sunburn, but it was worth it. Even though the weather went from freezing cold to really, really hot, I had lots of fun. And knowing that by timing the races I contributed a big part to the event, I was happy. Key Club was the place where I met tons of new friends, all different and unique. As a candidate to becoming your future president, I hope I can give every member of Key Club a chance to meet new people. I plan to have more events all over the five boroughs, so club members won’t have to travel too far to attend and can participate more. I want to encourage more members to be active and enjoy Key Club for what it has to offer to everyone.
I promise to continue improving Key Club and not to let you guys down. I will dedicate time and work into being your president so that you will gain the same wonderful experiences I have. Name: Angie Koo Grade: Sophomore Position: Vice President Biography: Hey, Key Club! I’m running for the position of vice president. I’ve been a member of Key Club since my freshman year at Stuyvesant. At first, I had only known about Key Club because a friend of mine took me to the first meeting and said I should join. Before, I had never really volunteered or thought about it but Key Club has really changed that. I remember that my first ever event freshman year was at M.S.A.B.C., and how people that I didn’t know would just come up to me and my friends saying, “Thank you”. That was probably the first time I realized I wanted to continue to be a part of Key Club. And gradually, I started going to events and as “cheesy” as it may sound, now, I can say that it is largely due to Key Club that I have bonded with many of my friends and made many awesome memories. One reason that I am running is because I would love the chance to continue giving this experience to the rest of the Stuyvesant community. Furthermore, I would want our club to continue to grow and the work that we do as Stuyvesant Key Club to benefit even more lives. By building upon what our current vice president has done, I think I can continue to better organize our club and provide updates to our members. I also believe that I have the necessary experience to lead Key Club, as well as the time and dedication. I’ve have been at nearly every meeting held this year and I believe I have a good understanding of how Key Club operates. Key Club has become a major part of my high school experience, and I would want to take on this role to give everyone this experience. Events:

Bette Ha and Johnny Szeto Name: Bette Ha Grade: 11 My name is Bette Ha, and I’m currently a junior running for Key Club president. I’ve been a dedicated Key Club member since my freshman year, and Key Club has provided me with a huge outlet to give back to the community. I’ve been through some difficult times, but I’ve always managed to find some way to apply myself, and to become of some use through Key Club, whether it was going out to subway stations and giving food to the homeless, or sorting through medical supplies to ship to Africa. Through volunteering at events, whether it was route-marshalling or handing out fliers, I befriended people with whom I might never have had the chance to speak if not for these events. I believe that I exhibit qualities of leadership and compassion, essential characteristics for a Key Club President. I also have the time to spare for Key Club. I have few other extracurricular obligations which hardly ever conflict with the interests of Key Club. As a current junior, I admit that there will be times when I may be overburdened with work, such as the SATs and APs. However, I will not let these standardized tests (which aren’t a great way to evaluate a person’s potential anyway) get in the way of my taking care of Key Club and taking care of each individual member. In addition, I would like the Stuyvesant Key Club to be more closely affiliated with other schools in our division, and I am personal friends with members of the LaGuardia and Bronx Science cabinets. I would also like for our key club to work with other clubs and organizations both within the school and outside of it, to expand our outreach, and to involve more people with all sorts of interests. I take everything I learn and experience to heart. Every homeless person that smiled when I gave them a bagged lunch was a friend. Every runner that made it across the finish line, pumping their fists in the air and slapping me a high five was a friend. Every Key Club member that I was able to work with, side by side, helping our community, was a friend. And now, it’s my time to give back.

Being in this club for three years, I've learned a lot about what it means to do service for your community. During my first year in Key Club, I was able to get a good glimpse of how a seemingly ordinary club could help change the community as well as reach out to others in need. I remember when I went to my first Key Club event; it was Teensgiving, and I wasn’t sure what to expect there. When I arrived to the event location, I received my first Key Club TShirt ever (which I now use as part of my pajama ensemble) and was sent straight to raking leaves. What I thought would be one of the dullest, time wasting experiences I have ever been through in my life turned out to be quite enjoyable. I think it was the sight of seeing an entire field once filled with leaves completely empty that was most fulfilling. Of course, playtime in the leaves was just as satisfying. From then on, I had a very eager outlook on events to come. Through my time spent in this club, I think I truly understand that service not only means to help others, but to better the community as well as lend a hand to people when they need one. I want to help show others what it means to be a Key Clubber. I will help my running mate to the best of my abilities and show that Key Club is a worthwhile experience. Blurb Boomba! Hey Key Clubbers! I'm Kenny Yu, and I'm running for president with Adeline Yeo as vice-president. I've been in Key Club for three years now and I've seen the success Key Club has had in providing service for the community. I believe that I am qualified to be president because I am dedicated to this club and I would like to institute changes to make Key Club more successful than ever. Some of these changes include providing more inclusive events and long-term events so that everyone will be encouraged to attend more events to see the progress that their service is providing for the community. I'm currently the secretary of Key Club and I have familiarized myself with the various organizations that work with our club. As part of the cabinet, I have had experience organizing and managing projects that Key club participates in, and I have learned the duties that Gavin and Victoria have in maintaining the success of this club. Hi guys! I'm Adeline Yeo, as you all may know, and I'm running for Vice-President of Key Club alongside Kenny Yu. I am running for vice-president of Key Club because I would like to see more change: More active members and more events unifying Key Clubbers to name a few. I believe I am qualified to serve you as vice-president since I have been your treasurer for the past year and so not only do I know the treasurer's job very well, but I have also learned about what the other cab members' duties are. Through my position as treasurer, I have gained experience with organizing the funds, becoming familiar with what our Key Club duties are, as well as communicating with the many organizations that we work with. Position: Secretary
Hi, my name is Fannie Law. I’m currently a sophomore and I’m running for the position of Secretary in Key Club. First off, I just want to say that I know it’s unusual for a sophomore to be running for this position. But, (at the risk of sounding cliché) I know that I have the determination and motivation to successfully complete the duties that are required from this position. As hard as it may be to believe, there is no doubt that I will always put Key Club first before my schoolwork or my grades. I value Key Club over anything that I could possibly value in Stuyvesant just because it has given me so much more than everything else. The thing is, I came to Stuyvesant with the intent to join Key Club. Why? Because every weekend, I was stuck at home while my older sister was off attending events. It really amazed me how community service could be so interesting and I resolved to join Key Club just to see what the hype was about. To be honest, I didn’t see it at first. I couldn’t understand how people got themselves so worked up at the club/pub fair, screaming for people to join Key Club. And I didn’t see it when I signed up for my first event, with the president enthusiastically persuading people to fill up those last 20 spots. But, after working in the event for a few hours, I had caught the Key Club virus. It wasn’t through lugging bags of ice, or passing out sandwiches, or telling people “one-bag-of-chips-per-person”. It was the smile that I got from the little girl that I gave a sandwich to. It was the thanks I got from a couple who had just finished the mile-long walk. It was the high five that I got from an elderly man who had diabetes. And I can’t explain it but I just felt so…happy. I felt that I had done so little, but it meant the world to a few people. Those people are the reason why I go to events, the reason why I push myself to stay just one more hour, the reason why I choose wake up early on a Sunday morning. Quite simply, Key Club had become my world. I had found the motivation for my community service and that was what made it all worthwhile.

Anyway, hello I'm Bryan (so much for the formal introductions, but they had to be out of the way). Some of you may know me as the crossdresser to whom Jensen proposed to during Halloween, while others may know me as the loud cheerer that prevailed during the hours of March of Dimes, Aids Walk, and MSABC. In any case, this loud crossdresser is running to be your secretary :)

I'll try to keep the boring parts short: In middle school I was a member of the Kiwanis Builder's Club. Though it wasn't as active as Key Club, it still participated in school charity events. Fast forward to high school, I joined Key Club during my freshman year and was not active until my second term. Things happened, people were happy, Gavin became president, woo hoo we're now up to speed. That wasn't too brutal (hopefully) In any case, I've been a member of KC for three years and am currently the Locksmith Committee head. I've probably been the most active last year, when I had ample time to volunteer for events (though I'll admit to being MIA during junior year.) In the most general sense, the duties of the secretary are to "write things and report forms." Well I consider myself to be rather organized and as Gavin so quaintly states about me I "only [know] how to render the English language to [my] convenience." I'm sure Gavin initially meant that as an insult but hey, it seems to fit well in this situation :) So try to vote for me if you don't mind :) PS: I didn't include every event I've been to. I figured I wouldn't be able to remember every one of the events I've been to :x And to relieve the boredom from this bio, here's something relatively interesting :D Plan has backfired!
