Georgia Gayle Nick was born in Jefferson City, Missouri. As a child her parents collected Prints and Lithographs of the paintings by Missouri Artist George Caleb Bingham. His talent influenced her love of “light and perspective” in photography and painting. Georgia’s passion is in taking the photographs used to create her Fine Art Photography. Through years of practice and patience she has developed a unique style. Georgia’s images portray a distinct sense of composition, an understanding of exposure and natural light, combined with the skills to use her camera and computer as creative tools. Photography and art have always been part of her life, and since moving to Florida’s First Coast, it has become her career. Georgia is an awarding winning photographer. Her work has been featured throughout North East Florida. Images of historic St. Augustine fill her walls. Her portfolio also includes many beautiful photographs from her travels throughout Spain, including images of St. Augustine’s “Sister City” Avilés. Georgia and Joe opened “The Georgia Nick Gallery” in 2013, located in the historic “Hamblen-Holiday” building at 11 A Avilés Street in downtown St. Augustine, Florida. The gallery features fine artists, artisans and authors from North East Florida. The walls are filled with Acrylic, Oil, Watercolor and Pastel Paintings. They also feature Photography, Beautiful Stained and Painted Glass, Mosaics, Wood Turning, Sterling Silver and Gold Jewelry, Wood Sculptures and Handmade Leather Sandals, Purses, Belts and Wallets. 904-342-2186, info@georgianickgallery.com www.GeorgiaNickGallery.Com

Old Town is St. Augustine’s first community and the link to its 16th century origins. Remarkably preserved, this enclave is resplendent with architectural landmarks and beautiful gardens. Fascinating shops, galleries and accommodations are found here too. The narrow brick streets and walkways, stone walls, and overhanging balconies maintain a distinctly European ambience.

There are many exhilarating ways to have fun near the water, from surfing and parasailing to taking a dinner cruise on the Intracoastal. A must-see is the Museum of Arts and Sciences where American Art, African Art, Asian art, decorative art, Cuban art, a planetarium, a children’s museum, restored railroad cars, fossils and changing exhibitions are housed in a 100,000 square foot facility in a 90-acre interpreted natural park. Special exhibitions of photography are offered at both

For a closer look at seabirds, stingrays that you can touch and other marvels of the sea, visit the Marine Science Center for interactive fun. Marineland Dolphin Adventure is a short drive north to learn “behind the seas” and experience dolphin life. Fishing along the Halifax River is enjoyable whether you rent a boat or fish from a pier. For those who enjoy challenging offshore fishing for yellow fin tuna and marlin, deep sea charters are available. The best way to experience Florida’s outdoors is by canoe, kayak or bicycle. It’s never boring and you’ll get a healthy workout too. You don’t have to go far to see a different ecosystem in Florida, the scenery can change within a mile or two, so get moving and start exploring! Bicycling: on hard-packed sand at low tide is a great way to enjoy our 23 miles of gorgeous beach in the Daytona Beach area. Ride as far as you like, and when you get hot, stop and take a dip in the surf! The Ormond Beach Scenic Loop Trail is a 30+ mile route on some of Volusia’s most picturesque roads. Always wear a helmet and bring water. This ride is for experienced bicyclists used to sharing the road with cars. Ponce Inlet Trail Ponce Preserve, a 41-acre park with free parking, is a good starting point for this 8-foot wide, paved trail. Ride 3 miles south along A1A to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Marine Science Center. Shade is limited so ride early. Paddleboarding: in calm water is good exercise and a fresh way to watch a gorgeous sunset. It doesn’t seem like much effort, starting on your knees then getting to a standing position on a large surfboard. Wider, flatter boards are more stable making them useful for fishing the shallows. Some are large enough for a child to sit in front of you. Paddling is similar to canoeing with a side-to-side stroke. Choose a paddle that’s roughly 6” to 8” taller than you are and take a personal flotation device. The U.S. Coast Guard requires it if you are paddling on navigable water. To Kayak or Canoe: is another delightful activity. Go fast. Go slow. Either way, take in the natural old Florida waterways from one of our many spectacular parks. You are certain to see a lone Osprey nest high in a tree, or a turtle sunning on a fallen tree, and maybe a manatee. With a little planning you can outfit your group with reservations at one of the many parks. Brownie, a large, short-haired stray dog lived on Beach Street in Downtown Daytona Beach during the 1940s and 50s, and became known as the Town Dog of Daytona Beach. Brownie was born in 1939, and showed up at the Daytona Cab Company in early 1940. Owner Ed Budgen and his drivers took a shine to the friendly dog and built him a dog house as well as established a bank account in Brownie’s name. Brownie’s sweet disposition soon made him a must see for shoppers and tourists who all stopped to greet him, take a picture with him, or just sit with him while waiting for a cab or bus. Many donated money to help pay for his food and veterinary care. As his popularity grew, he was written about in both local and national magazines and newspapers. Brownie died on Halloween, October 31, 1954 at the age of 15. At the time of his death, $300 remained in his bank account (approximately $3000 in today’s dollars). The money was used to pay for his final vet bills, funeral, casket and grave marker. His funeral was attended by 75 people and the mayor gave his eulogy. Brownie’s grave is located in historic downtown Daytona Beach’s Riverfront Park, near the Halifax River, on the corner of Orange Avenue and Beach Street. Learn more at

Beach Bonfires All it takes is a permit, some dry wood and starter kindling. And don’t forget a good lighter. In some locations, there are beach fire pits you can use. Bonfires are permitted from November 1 to April 30 when turtles are not making nests. In summer months, lights on the beach are banned, because they would disorient females trying to lay eggs and confuse hatchlings scurrying toward the safety of the sea.

Call First for a Permit

Volusia County: For locations and reservations, visit Volusia.org then Beach Safety, Bonfires or call 386-239-6414, then press 0 Flagler County: 386-517-2010 When the weather is cool, there’s nothing like a seaside bonfire to warm the night air. Add some drums, the mellow tones of a flute or guitars, and you have the makings of a therapeutic night under the stars.

New Smyrna has 13 miles of powder-white sand,

natural dunes and tidal pools that harbor tiny sea creatures. It’s connected to the mainland by only two causeways, and to the south, it’s protected by the pristine Canaveral National Seashore. The Indian River and coastal estuaries are famous for excellent backwater fishing and kayaking. To say the area lifestyle is artsy is an understatement. New Smyrna Beach is an old-time coastal town where the lifestyle is creative and laid back. The Flagler Avenue merchants have preserved the picturesque buildings that give it an inviting carefree atmosphere. The five-block main drag from ocean to river is an intriguing neighborhood and a popular gathering place. At most any time during the

year you will find a unique event to enjoy. There is always something special going on.

Free-spirited artists have always been drawn to this congenial Old Florida community. Artworks by prominent regional, emerging and nationally known artists are offered at several galleries including the Atlantic Center of the Arts and the Harris House Gallery, which is located in a historic Lutheran parsonage. Downtown on the mainland, Arts on Douglas and the Clay Gallery offer a selection of unique paintings, jewelry and pottery. Just off Canal Street The Hub offers studios for local artists to sell and show their craft. There are also classes of all types, even yoga. This beach side of town is a magnet for shoppers looking for art, handmade clothing and collectibles – without the crowds you came to escape. If you work up an appetite while browsing there is an eclectic selection of restaurants mixed in with the colorfully painted shops and galleries. New Smyrna Beach boasts it is the second oldest city in North America, although it is probably more famous for its dynamic jazz, seafood and arts festivals. It’s well worth the drive for its beaches, a portion which is open to vehicles, and soft sand dunes. At restaurants with beautiful views of the inlet or the river, diners can leisurely watch sunsets and dolphins, we know you will enjoy your visit.

3) Old Fort Park-Turnbull Ruins The Turnbull Ruins are a bit of a mystery. A coquina block foundation overlooking the Intracoastal is said to be the remains of a mansion that was started by Andrew Turnbull from 1766-1777. It's believed that he attempted to build his personal mansion on these coquina remains. Others think the ruins may be the remains of a pre-colonial fort or a colonial church. Located at Washington St. and N. Riverside Dr. 4) Black Heritage Museum The Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum houses photographs, memorabilia and artifacts used to educate citizens and students about the history and race relations in small town Florida. This history dates back to the early 1920s. Open to the public Wed. – Sat., 1 – 4 p.m., 314 N. Duss St., 386-478-1934, www.BlackHeritageMuseum.org 5) Eldora House This house is one of a few remaining artifacts of earlier life (built c. 1913) in a small waterfront community on Mosquito Lagoon. The town of 100 people existed between 1877 and 1900. The city's decline began after three freezes during the late 1880s and 1890s that destroyed the town's citrus crops. After 1910, the Eldora "State" House was built. Open Fri. – Sun., 12 – 4 p.m., located in N. District of Canaveral National Seashore, 386-428-3384.

6) Turtle Mound This prehistoric archaeological site dates back to over 14,000 years ago and was created by the Timucuan Indian civilization over a period of several hundred years. This kitchen midden is made up of oyster shell remains and resembles the shape of a turtle, hence the name. It stand 50 feet tall, covers two acres, and can be seen seven miles out at sea. You may not see turtles nesting there but they can be seen 6) through-out the Canaveral Seashore Park. 5 Servings of

Florida’s Fabulous Seafood Blessed by a coastline extending more than 1,300 miles, Florida’s chefs have taken full advantage of the bounty of the waters. No visit to the Sunshine State would be complete without sampling some of the seafood dishes found on most menus. Here are a few to tempt you.

1. 2.

Conch: pronounced “konk.” These chewy clams are served tenderized with lime juice, raw and chopped in salad. Also chopped, breaded and fried as conch fritters and in conch chowder (usually red, spicy). Mahi (or Mahi Mahi): the correct name is dolphin (not the mammal). Firm, white-fleshed and delicious grilled, blackened or Cajun-style.

d36 daytona beach area

3.

Grouper: one of the mildest fishes available, served fried, blackened, broiled or grilled as an entrée, but a fried grouper sandwich is hard to beat.

4.

Yellowfin tuna: a firm, flavorful semi-dark meat fish most often grilled, broiled or blackened.

5.

Florida lobster: known as spiny lobster, has no claws like Maine lobster. Florida lobster tails are broiled and served with melted butter. Absolutely delicious!

art of the fun in wine tasting is deciding what you find is delicious. Everyone has a different set of taste buds, so drink the wines you like with the food you like.

I

nstead of red with meat, white with fish, think about balancing flavors. For example, pair delicately flavored foods with light-bodied wines. A lightly flavored fish calls for a crisp, light white wine. Deeper flavored salmon calls for a flavorful, buttery white wine. Bold, spicy foods require a full-bodied wine that’s slightly sweet and full of flavor. Seasoned dishes like pasta and savory meats are balanced with a rich, robust red wine. d42 daytona beach area

“Avocado Pears” Artist: Juan Gil Garcia, Cuban Foundation

Salsa-Style

Guacamole Delightful with chips or as a topping for cooked fish or chicken.

Avocado Prep:

• 3 firm ripened Avocados cubed. (approx. ¼”) • Toss with juice of 1 lime. • Chill while prepping salsa and “Everything Else”.

Fresh Salsa:

• 2-3 medium sized fresh tomatoes, cubed, • •

• • •

seeds removed OR in the summer add a fresh cubed cucumber to the tomatoes. 1/2 red onion, diced. 1 or 2 jalapeno or serrano peppers diced, seeds and ribs removed, less or more to taste. (Be careful when preparing, they can transfer the burn from your fingers, best to use gloves.) Juice of one lime. 1/2 cup chopped cilantro. Salt and pepper to taste Tip: To marinate flavors let salsa chill for several hours. If it accumulates a lot of water, drain half off before adding to the avocado.

The “Everything Else” is a combination of one or more of the following. Add to taste! Fresh corn, sliced black olives, black beans (drained), garbanzo beans (drained), fresh pineapple chunks, sliced scallions.

Mix all the ingredients together in one bowl and lightly toss (as to not make the avocado mushy). Your end result will be 50% cubed avocado/with 50% fresh salsa including “Everything Else”.
