Did you know
that man’s best friend is welcomed on beaches in St. Johns, Volusia and Flagler Counties?
It’s the perfect way to spend quality time with your pet - a day at the beach! The beaches of Volusia, Flagler and St. Johns Counties provide an ideal venue. Both Smyrna Dunes and Lighthouse Point Parks in Volusia County are ‘pet-friendly’. In Flagler County, the area just north of Gamble Rogers State Park and 13th Street is set aside to bring along man’s best friend and in St. Johns County, pets are permitted on any county maintained beach and that includes horses! Be sure to bring doggie bags and water. While some parks provide bags to pick up after your pet, others do not. Be a good pet owner and don’t leave a mess for others. Know that most beaches require your pet to be on a leash at all times and make sure the section of beach you visit is designated, ‘pet-friendly’. Failure to do so could result in stiff fines.

Aviles Street Located in St. Augustine’s Historic District, Aviles Street is the oldest public street in the country. In the 16th century, it was known as Hospital Street, because it was the location of a Spanish Military Hospital. Those entering under the stone archway today will find a thriving arts district- with art galleries, jewelry, handmade leather goods, boutiques, and antique shops; historic buildings and museums as well as a few restaurants and cafés lining the street.
Flagler College Take a step back in time and explore the Hotel Ponce de Leon, a National Historic Landmark built by Henry Flagler in 1888, now home to Flagler College. It is considered an example of Spanish Renaissance architecture and was the most exclusive resort of its day. Guided tours daily from the Rotunda of the College. Fort Mose Historic State Park Established in 1738, Fort Mose was the first free black settlement in in the United States. Today, visitors will find a 40-acre waterfront historic site that offers picnic areas, an observation and birding boardwalk, a kayak launch boardwalk. Our Lady of La Leche at Mission Nombre de Dios On September 8, 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés landed in St. Augustine and proclaimed this site for Spain and the Church. He named this site Nombre de Dios, which means, Name of God. Bulow Plantation Ruins and Fairchild Oak This 150-acre park contains the ruins of an 1800s sugar and cotton plantation. It is home to the more than 800 year-old live “Fairchild Oak” which has withstood Seminole Indian wars, developers and fires. Eldora House This house is one of a few remaining artifacts of earlier life (built c. 1913) in a small waterfront community on Mosquito Lagoon. The town of 100 people existed between 1877 and 1900. The city’s decline began after three freezes during the late 1880s and 1890s that destroyed the town’s citrus crops. After 1910, the Eldora “State” House was built. New Smyrna Speedway This track is home to some of the finest stock car racing for more than 45 years. They originally opened in 1967 as a dirt track, but it was paved to begin hosting the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. Turtle Mound This prehistoric archaeological site dates back to more than 14,000 years ago and was created by the Timucuan Indian civilization over a period of several hundred years. This kitchen midden is made up of oyster shell remains and resembles the shape of a turtle, hence the name.
