GUIDE

america’s beach

Welcome to Daytona Beach – The World’s Most Famous Beach! This bold designation stems from the City’s rich racing history and heralds back to an era where cars actually raced on the hard-packed sand. Today you can immerse yourself in the past when you drive along select areas of more than 23 miles of sandy beaches. While you're there, be sure to enjoy all the beach has to offer: from sunbathing to building sandcastles to creating memories you’ll recall for years to come. Our calendar is packed with activities and events and you can use our maps to get there. Be sure to carry a copy of SEE with you so you never miss a single experience. Check out our money saving coupons in the back of the book to add value to your vacation. Look for the symbol for our insider’s tips on what’s happening around town. You’ll be glad you read the EXTRAS on pages 18-19 for side trips and things to do that are inexpensive or free.

New Smyrna Beach or anywhere in betweenthe fun and activities never cease. Daytona’s eco experience, Daytona Beach Zip Line Adventure, is built in the trees of Tuscawilla Park. After you’ve taken part in this exciting activity, the following day can be a lazy, ‘guilt free’ day at the beach. Anglers and golf enthusiasts will find plenty of places to fish and play, while art devotees can visit an almost endless supply of galleries. Dining options range from the casual to the elegant and selections abound from mouthwatering burgers to authentic ethnic delights. There’s so much to do that you’ll have to return again and again. Enjoy this copy of SEE and thank you for choosing the Daytona Beach Area for your vacation!

And when you are looking for something else to do, you’ll find that no matter where you stay - from Ormond Beach to

ACTIVITIES

getting the most out of your vacation

When you visit Daytona Beach, you'll never have a problem finding something to do. In fact, your most difficult task will be deciding what to do. There is a never ending list of activities to satisfy every whim. Daytona Beach is a standout. There are 26 miles of hard packed sand where you can soak up some rays, build a sandcastle, play a game of volleyball or watch as surfers hang ten in the place known for having the best surfing along the coast of the Eastern Seaboard. If you love the great outdoors, the area is overflowing with lush parks, world-class golf and tennis courts as well as inshore and offshore fishing. Take a guided river tour or seize the moment and take charge of your water destiny in a kayak or canoe. To see turtles and wildlife up close, visit our Marine Science Center. Expect to be fascinated by the view from our lighthouse and intrigued by our museums and nature preserves.

Daytona Lagoon has added two water slides to the waterpark for the 2019 season! Guests can now experience Shaka Halfpipe, a pendulum-style ride that drops single and double riders into a 50-foot halfpipe, and Kraken’s Revenge, where four riders can race head-first through tunnels with a time-warp effect like no other in Central Florida! Visit the “To Choose Our Destiny” exhibit at the Museum of Arts and Sciences that celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the momentous Apollo 11 Moon exhibit– on display through July 28, 2019. changing exhibits can be found listed at MOAS.org. We have some simple pleasures to share too, like a walk on the beach in the morning to a chorus of seagulls, or searching for seashells with a loved one, playing in the cool waves or even just soaking in some rays from the comfy seat of your beach chair.

Looking for some old fashioned, beach fun? Go fly a kite! There’s no better place to do that than along the beach where there are no power lines and plenty of open space. Year -round breezes make conditions ideal for the novice or more experienced flyers. Pick up a kite at any gift or souvenir shop. Prices start around $7 and depending on your skill, or lack thereof, purchase the least expensive model. Your kit will come with easy to follow instructions and no special tools are required. Kite flying is not a singular sport. For best results, you need a companion. One person should hold the string, known as a bridle; the companion will grasp the kite. The kite should be facing both you and the wind. Wind direction is important or you will be dragging, not flying, your kite. Unwind 10-15 yards of string, motion to your friend to release the kite, then start moving. Release more string to fly higher; less to lower the kite. Follow these instructions and your kite and spirits will soar!

Eldora House This house is one of a few remaining artifacts of earlier life (built c. 1913) in a small waterfront community on Mosquito Lagoon. The town of 100 people existed between 1877 and 1900. The city's decline began after three freezes during the late 1880s and 1890s that destroyed the town's citrus crops. After 1910, the Eldora "State" House was built. Open Fri. – Sun., 12 – 4 p.m., located in N. District of Canaveral National Seashore, 386-428-3384. (grid FF/GG - 8)

The Sugar Mill Ruins Once a highly functional sugar mill, built during the early 19th century. This 17 acre historic site contains the sugar mill, as well as other buildings, which were destroyed during the war between the Seminole Indians and the United States. Sugar Mill Ruins, 600 Mission Dr., 386-427-2284. (grid FF/GG - 8)

Turtle Mound This prehistoric archaeological site dates back to more than 14,000 years ago and was created by the Timucuan Indian civilization over a period of several hundred years. This kitchen midden is made up of oyster shell remains and resembles the shape of a turtle, hence the name. Follow a park trail to its peak as it leads to a spectacular panoramic view of the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, 386-428-3384, www.NPS.gov/cana/index.htm. Express Yourself!

Brightly colored Hawaiian shirts confirm Florida’s kick-back surfer attitude and give you an immediate sense of relaxation. Choosing one becomes a personal statement that says a lot about your individuality. The origins of the floral patterns can be traced to Japanese designs and go back hundreds of years in the South Seas. “Aloha” shirts, as they are sometimes called, were first created for tourists during the 1930s. Hawaiian businessmen wore them to support local clothing manufacturers. President Truman wore them and their popularity soared during WW II when servicemen and women brought them back from Hawaii as gifts for family and friends. Wildly colorful, loose fitting and comfortable, the shirts are a natural choice in Florida. Worn on dress-down Fridays, the shirts send a happy-go lucky, ready for fun message. Both gals and guys love that breast pocket—the perfect place for your sunglasses—so stock up and take a few home for your TGIF wardrobe. ~ Georgia Brown

DINING

a world of dining choices

One of the great joys of life is eating and there’s no better time to indulge in your favorite foods then while you are vacationing. The Daytona Beach area offers a world of selections and dining venues. You can enjoy a meal on the river at sunset, or watch the sunrise over breakfast. Sip coffee at a cozy outdoor café or savor the ambiance as you dine indoors. Most restaurants offer a more casual experience so you never have to don a jacket or gown. But for a special occasion or if you are seeking a more formal atmosphere, those options are available as well. For a unique experience, enjoy the river and have a meal at the same time. Dine and Cruise is now offering some menu items. Slow cooked pot roast and vegetable lasagna added to menu along with regular options like prime rib and shrimp.

The choices of what to eat are more varied than the dining venues. Freshly caught Florida seafood is prepared to your liking. It can be fried, broiled, grilled or blackened and topped with everything from mango salsa or spritzed with a juicy Florida lime. Meals can be as simple as a succulent burger with all the toppings to mouthwatering filet mignon. If you enjoy something different, check out our Dining Guide on pages 40-41 in this book for restaurants that will satisfy your desire for mouth-watering cuisines. Live music is often part of the scene, so if the spirit moves you, get up and dance! Ordering dessert is also part of being on vacation. Go ahead, indulge, that’s what vacations are for—making memories with friends and family.
