“Rooftops” (oil)

Charles Dickinson, a Connecticut native, grew up in a family of artists and began drawing in early childhood.

He received four years of formal training at the Paier School of Art, and two years of instruction in painting and sculpture at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art, both in Connecticut. He has worked as a plein air (open air) landscape painter for more than thirty years and often incorporates imaginative imagery into his landscapes. Charles has been featured in several media formats including the opening presentation on NBC Sports for the PGA Tournament at TCP Sawgrass,

Jacksonville’s Arbus magazine (Cover Artist), Northeast Florida’s Lifestyles Magazine (Feature), Vermont’s What’s Where magazine (Cover Artist), Cape Cod Guide (Cover Artist), and newspapers in Vermont and Florida, to name a few. He often participates in invitational plein air painting events throughout the East. Recent awards include Artists Choice Award, United Way Award, and Award of Merit at the 2008 Crescent Beach Paint Out. Charles’ two-artist exhibit, Visions and Voices: a Musical and Visual Journey was chosen one of the favorite art events of 2007 by the St. Augustine Record’s Compass.

Charles is an artist-in-residence at the Dow Museum of Historic Houses. Charles divides his time between Florida, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Vermont. His artistic aim is to continue to create paintings that capture the spirit and beauty of nature. For more information visit www.charlesdickinson.net or email artist@charlesdickinson.net

Welcome to St. Augustine, a cultural melting pot with a vibrant historic past. Its ties to Spain and Europe

are so rich and exciting that they nearly overshadow the area’s natural beauty.

Besides exploring the Old City, follow our tips for enjoying the outlying areas, including world class golf,

year-round fishing and fantastic surfing and water sports.

The area has more than 100 parks for hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking. Create family memories

while watching the children build a sand castle, fish off a pier, or take a pontoon boat tour on a placid waterway.

Romantics will be swept away by cozy bistros with inner courtyards, urbane wine bars and all the many

facets of nightlife in this city. Ramble to your heart’s content, be entertained at a cozy piano bar, or dance to the music of the night.

To get the feel of the historic district, hop on a trolley or set out on foot to explore the brick paved streets

laid out in orderly fashion. The area is peppered with fascinating landmarks and an eclectic mix of architecture, from colonial dwellings with inner courtyards and Victorian houses painted in candy store colors, to community churches that have survived for generations.

Prepare to be charmed by lively dramatic re-enactors who bring history to life and teach us new lessons

of how our nation has survived. After all, St. Augustine was founded by Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565— long before Plymouth Rock—and is the oldest continually occupied settlement in America.

It’s the sight of Spanish conquistadors, American Indians and colonial citizens in authentic dress as they

tell tales of their struggles that make this city the most fascinating in America. st. augustine area

activities

in the st. augustine area

After you’ve soaked up the Old City’s ambiance, you

won’t have to venture far for surfing, parasailing, jet skiing, sailing or windsurfing on Anastasia Island or Ponte Vedra.

Hiking up 219 steps to the top of the St. Augustine

Lighthouse, the oldest navigational site in North America, is worth the view. After seeing the expanse of azure water that surrounds the area, you will understand why fishing is a year ‘round sport here.

Saltwater and freshwater fishing are minutes from the

historic district. Hang out at a local bait shop to soak up the local lore about “the big one that got away.”

Along the Matanzas River, family operated fishing resorts

offer complete setups, renting pontoon boats and skiffs as well as tackle, if you didn’t bring your rod. Locals are eager to give tips on inshore saltwater fishing near feeder creeks and oyster bars off the main channel where they catch black drum, tarpon and mangrove snapper.

Deep-sea charters will take you trolling for wahoo, tuna

and marlin, or hop on a party boat to fish for redfish, speckled trout and flounder. “San Sebastian River, St. Augustine, FL” (oil)

For those who prefer to keep their feet dry, there’s plenty

of fun to be had fishing on local piers and specially designed walkways under bridges. Or visit the section of beach where you can park your car, eat a picnic lunch and fish in the surf.

Whether you’re in top form or just a weekend golfer, there’s a local golf course with gently rolling fairways

for you to try. Courses have been designed by such world champions as Sam Sneed, Gene Sarazen, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. And for a golfer’s paradise, visit the World Golf Hall of Fame.

More than 100 parks are the area’s treasures, retreats for nature lovers and reminders of how ancient Indian

civilizations lived off the land for thousands of years. Spend a morning biking, hiking, canoeing or kayaking, and you’ll feel far removed from the rush of the city. Just for fun, end the day with a ghost tour—with 450 years of history, didn’t you expect some mysteries?

Rip Currents occur when the waves returning back out to sea find a gap in the sandbar. Since that gap will be a path of least resistance for moving water, a channel of swiftly moving water is created. Escaping a Rip Current It is best not to try and fight your way out of it right away, as it may only exhaust you. So, it is very important to remember not to panic, and initially allow the current to pull you out. When you feel you can swim out of the current, start swimming parallel to the shore. As soon as you feel you are out of the pull of the current, then you can start to swim towards the shore.

They have deep roots that have a stabilizing effect on the drifting mounds of soft sand that gradually slope from the uplands to the high tide line. ThatÕ s why we use wooden walkways to get to the beach. In St. Johns County, dunes also protect the Endangered Anastasia Island Beach Mouse, the only mammal native to the dunes. Buff colored fur with white markings on the face and nose provide good camouflage for living among the sea oats and panic grass. Whatever you desire, the shopping experience in St. Augustine will reward you with outstanding selections. Wander leisurely through the historic district’s specialty shops and stop for lunch or a praline. It’s all part of letting the cares of the world pass you by. Not only is the St. Augustine area a fantastic place for antique hunting, it’s also the place to find sophisticated accent pieces and stained glass that will redirect the focus of a room. Besides an abundance of yesterday’s treasures, you’ll find the latest in resort wear and precious gemstone jewelry here too. Strolling through the Old City or playing in the sun can build up an appetite. Not to worry, because dining out is another great part of being here. For a city of its size, St. Augustine offers exceptionally delicious fare, a combination of available fresh ingredients and the freestyle imagination of accomplished chefs. Whether you want a romantic dinner for two that is paired with a fine wine or a frosty brew at the localsÕ favorite beach grill, serving fresh-catch Florida seafood the way you like it and thick clam chowder, we have restaurants you will love. Some offer casual meals with a view of a marina, the Atlantic Ocean or the Intracoastal. Whenever you dine overlooking the water, itÕ s a great way to unwind. Speaking of views, after taking the tour at our local winery, you can sit on the rooftop and relax with a bottle of wine and enjoy items

from their smaller portion menu. Or enjoy a steak on a garden patio at a Victorian home. Crispy fried shrimp and down-home Southern favorites are part of the lifestyle near the coast, and your meal will be served to please your eye as much as your appetite. Whatever eating establishment you choose, tapas style bistro in a gallery setting, a Key West-style grill, or urban cuisineÑ a little of a lot of things—you will find food is a personal experience here. The Old CityÕ s vintage buildings sparkle with lights just as the sun is setting. Jazz cafes and piano bars with golden light spilling out into the street invite you to step inside and enjoy the music. Indulge in a dessert crafted by a French chef or chocolatier and a romantic carriage ride through the historic neighborhoods. The clip-clop of the horsesÕ hooves is the height of romance in St. Augustine.

From the moment you feel the sand under your toes, the upbeat energy of Daytona Beach will captivate your heart. The sun shines on 23 miles of coastline, a stretch of golden beaches with a wide range of sporting activities from bicycling to deep sea fishing, the best that Florida has to offer. We’ll help you discover the hot spots, the best places to shop, eat and dance the night away in our neighboring communities of Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach Shores, New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet. From flying a kite to building a sandcastle with the family, you’ll find our beaches are great places for playing in the sun or under the moon. It’s all part of the local landscape that we share with visitors. Whether you prefer leisurely strolls or more vigorous walks and action-packed days, you’ll soon feel at home with our tips for outdoor fun, local eating establishments and the best bargains.

We welcome one and all, and our wide range of visitors proves just why this friendly seacoast is among America’s favorites. In our seaside neighborhoods, there are kid-friendly mini parks with slides, swings and multi-layered play structures to explore. Best of all, children of all ages like to cool off in the splash fountains designed to delight and refresh. If you are looking for adventure, consider a kayak or canoe to paddle quiet coastal waterways among pines and palmettos. Experience the thrill of parasailing, rent a personal watercraft or cruise down the Intracoastal. There’s so much to do, from strolling the boardwalk to playing championship golf, that it will be hard to decide what to do first. At the end of the day, settle down with a tall iced beverage while you watch the last rays of a Florida sunset. Whatever your lifestyle, you can do it all here. daytona beach area

activities

O

Once you’ve spent some time in the sun and relaxed,

chances are you’re ready for high spirited fun.

For some, that’s grabbing a surf board for the best surfing

on the Eastern Seaboard. But you can also rent a personal watercraft or learn to soar above the crowd on a parasail.

If fishing is your game, the Atlantic Ocean, Indian River

and the estuaries along the Intracoastal all provide excellent fishing challenges. Anglers enjoy a full-day charter of deep sea fishing or a short freshwater trip that the whole family will enjoy.

Discover our historic landmarks, climb Florida’s tallest

lighthouse at Ponce Inlet, explore the ruins of an early sugar mill or visit the ballpark where Jackie Robinson played in the first integrated Major League spring training game in 1946.

Beyond the beach are the lush fairways of our world-class

golf courses, one reason the area is rated one of the top golfing destinations in the world.

We never forget we’re the birthplace of speed and one

of the few places that allows driving on the beach. The Daytona International Speedway offers tours, and to satisfy your need for excitement, let loose and take the wheel at a go-kart park and experience the thrill of taking the turns at top speed. “Break Time” (watercolor)

Not far inland you’ll find air boat rides, sparkling springs

perfect for a refreshing dip and the charming town of Deland. Our wildlife preserves, safe havens for waterfowl and migrating birds, are places where only the splash of a canoe or kayak paddle breaks the stillness.

And before you leave, try to fit in simple pleasures. Ride a bike along the dunes, attend a seasonal art show

or heritage festival—our area’s full of unexpected fun.

Beach Bonfires ll it takes is a permit, some dry wood and starter kindling. And don’t A forget a good lighter. In some locations, there are beach fire pits you can use. Bonfires are permitted from November 1 to April 30 when turtles are not making nests. In summer months, lights on the beach are banned, because they would disorient females trying to lay eggs and confuse hatchlings scurrying toward the safety of the sea.

Call First for a Permit Volusia County: 386-239-6414, ex. 230. For more details, visit Volusia.org Flagler County: 386-517-2010

When the weather is cool, there’s nothing like a seaside bonfire to warm the night air. Add some drums, the mellow tones of a flute or guitars, and you have the makings of a therapeutic night under the stars.

Tips on Having a Good Time Check out your site beforehand and bring lanterns or flashlights, marshmallows and the fixings for S’mores, chairs or large blankets. A wheel barrow comes in handy, depending on the tide line, for bringing dry wood, lighter logs and a bucket for water to extinguish your coals. Smoldering embers covered with sand can unknowingly cause burns to people walking the beach after you’ve left. You must contain your fire and are responsible for cleaning up your site afterwards. You may collect some nice items that people leave behind, sweaters and beach towels. Expect drop-ins and remember, beer and alcohol are not allowed on the beach.

The lush, green Florida courses will increase your enjoyment and decrease bogeys. • Stay hydrated. • Wear 15-SPF Suncreen. • Warm up to prevent muscle soreness. • Ask about twilight rates for better green fees. • To help choose your best club, watch the tree tops for wind direction and speed. • Relax and have fun –you’re on vacation! Did you know? Northern grasses grow differently than Florida’s Bermuda grass. Replace your divots with sand and not the grass piece, as it will not survive.

Floridians are known for their own special style. They took the necessity of having to dress for hot, humid weather and ran with it. Florida’s “resort casual” has become the fashion of choice. Resort casual style is all about ease! It’s characterized by sundresses, tunics, capris, khakis and chinos, tropical prints, bright colors, sheer fabrics, caftans, boat shoes, and flip flops. Speaking of flip flops, did you ever wonder how they became all the rage? Flip flops have been around for six thousand years and were first depicted on Egyptian murals around 4000 BC. They began appearing in America in the 1950s when soldiers brought back Japanese zori (similar to flip flops) as souvenirs. Since then, the designs have changed –Flip flops have become a pervasive part of Florida beach style, and you’ll even find them on some high fashion runways! --Dana Whitcomb

a world of dining choices

Whether you are here for a weekend or longer, dining out is an important part of your vacation. One of the great things about the Daytona Beach area is the wide range of restaurants offering tantalizing cuisine.

C

Connoisseurs may seek out a fine wine cellar and a gourmet meal served at a candlelit table overlooking the water. But if you are in a more casual state of mind, wear your flip flops and dine on fresh caught seafood at one of our outdoor dockside restaurants. Florida seafood ordered the way you like it, sautŽ ed, broiled or blackened, is a savory specialtyÑ no matter what your budget. From the ever-popular grouper sandwich served in a basket to succulent shrimp scampi, the extraordinary selections will exceed even your highest expectations. Florida has culinary roots in Spanish and Caribbean dishes that mix savory herbs and fresh ingredients like mango, avocado and peppers. But southern cooking traditions are also strong in Florida, tempting all your down-home taste buds. Barbeque thatÕ s slow

cooked for hours, golden cornbread and crisp hush puppies are specialties that many of our restaurants serve with pride. We also offer romantic dinner cruises and funky themed restaurants. The ambience of your surroundings, including the presence of visitors from around the world, enhances dining pleasures. Waterfront views are everywhere, from simple eateries serving picnic-table style to restaurants with linen table cloths high above the surf. In the afternoon, island style drum beats revitalize you while you linger in the shade of an umbrella. Stroll along the boardwalk and listen to music carried by the sea breeze from inviting pubs with outdoor tables. When the dayÕ s ended, and dessert is on the table, take a moment to reflect on another perfect day in paradise.
