Charles Dickinson, a Connecticut native, grew up in a family of artists and began drawing in early childhood.

He received four years of formal training at the Paier School of Art, and two years of instruction in painting and sculpture at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art, both in Connecticut. He has worked as a plein air (open air) landscape painter for more than thirty years and often incorporates imaginative imagery into his landscapes. Charles has been featured in several media formats including the opening presentation on NBC Sports for the PGA Tournament at TCP Sawgrass,

Jacksonville’s Arbus magazine (Cover Artist), Northeast Florida’s Lifestyles Magazine (Feature), Vermont’s What’s Where magazine (Cover Artist), Cape Cod Guide (Cover Artist), and newspapers in Vermont and Florida, to name a few. He often participates in invitational plein air painting events throughout the East. Recent awards include Artists Choice Award, United Way Award, and Award of Merit at the 2008 Crescent Beach Paint Out. Charles’ two-artist exhibit, Visions and Voices: a Musical and Visual Journey was chosen one of the favorite art events of 2007 by the St. Augustine Record’s Compass.

Charles is an artist-in-residence at the Dow Museum of Historic Houses. Charles divides his time between Florida, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Vermont. After you’ve soaked up the Old City’s ambiance, you

won’t have to venture far for surfing, parasailing, jet skiing, sailing or windsurfing on Anastasia Island or Ponte Vedra.

Hiking up 219 steps to the top of the St. Augustine

Lighthouse, the oldest navigational site in North America, is worth the view. After seeing the expanse of azure water that surrounds the area, you will understand why fishing is a year ‘round sport here.

Saltwater and freshwater fishing are minutes from the

historic district. Hang out at a local bait shop to soak up the local lore about “the big one that got away.”

Along the Matanzas River, family operated fishing resorts

offer complete setups, renting pontoon boats and skiffs as well as tackle, if you didn’t bring your rod. Locals are eager to give tips on inshore saltwater fishing near feeder creeks and oyster bars off the main channel where they catch black drum, tarpon and mangrove snapper.

Rip Currents occur when the waves returning back out to sea find a gap in the sandbar. Since that gap will be a path of least resistance for moving water, a channel of swiftly moving water is created. Escaping a Rip Current It is best not to try and fight your way out of it right away, as it may only exhaust you. So, it is very important to remember not to panic, and initially allow the current to pull you out. When you feel you can swim out of the current, start swimming parallel to the shore. As soon as you feel you are out of the pull of the current, then you can start to swim towards the shore.

They have deep roots that have a stabilizing effect on the drifting mounds of soft sand that gradually slope from the uplands to the high tide line. ThatÕ s why we use wooden walkways to get to the beach. In St. Johns County, dunes also protect the Endangered Anastasia Island Beach Mouse, the only mammal native to the dunes. Buff colored fur with white markings on the face and nose provide good camouflage for living among the sea oats and panic grass. They make burrows for storing food and nesting in undisturbed dunes, but you can sometimes see their tiny Endangered Anastasia Island Beach Mouse footprints around the creeper vines that extend out from the dunes. When the weather is cool, there’s nothing like a seaside bonfire to warm the night air. Add some drums, the mellow tones of a flute or guitars, and you have the makings of a therapeutic night under the stars.

Tips on Having a Good Time Check out your site beforehand and bring lanterns or flashlights, marshmallows and the fixings for S’mores, chairs or large blankets. A wheel barrow comes in handy, depending on the tide line, for bringing dry wood, lighter logs and a bucket for water to extinguish your coals. Smoldering embers covered with sand can unknowingly cause burns to people walking the beach after you’ve left. You must contain your fire and are responsible for cleaning up your site afterwards. You may collect some nice items that people leave behind, sweaters and beach towels. Expect drop-ins and remember, beer and alcohol are not allowed on the beach.
