GUIDE

america’s beach

Ever since the 1900s when the early inventors of autos and motorcycles began testing their engines on the beach, people have been coming to the Daytona Beach area for all the right reasons—to play in the sun, go surfing and have a good time. Today some of the racing world’s most exciting events are held at the Daytona International Speedway. There’s no lack of activities year round here. More than 9 million visitors arrive each year to enjoy miles and miles of spectacular white sand beach, play golf, go fishing or cruising on the Halifax River. During this time of year, warm days and cool, breezy nights bring out the scent of our favorite tropical flowers. To see the brilliant colors of camellias and hibiscus in bloom, visit our local gardens and parks. It’s also an ideal time to walk the beach by moonlight and dance to live music offered by many of our restaurants.

Our Calendar is jam-packed with events, festivals and theatrical performances. Our maps will help you find your way around, so put SEE in your car or tote bag when you are out exploring. Look for the symbol for our insider’s tips on what’s happening around town. You’ll be glad you read the EXTRAS on pages 18-19 for side trips and things to do that are not expensive or free! If you like special values, thumb through the money-saving coupons at the back of the book. Tear them out, use them and save! It’s our way of thanking you for choosing the Daytona Beach area. And if you don’t see everything this time, well, you’ll just have to come back again.

ACTIVITIES

getting the most out of your vacation

You may be tempted to never leave the beach, but when you’re ready to get out and see the sights, there are countless ways to have fun. To see turtles and wildlife up close, visit our Marine Science Center. Expect to be fascinated by the view from our lighthouse and intrigued by our museums and nature preserves. Our area hosts many festivals and cultural events, including concerts and exhibits at our galleries and museums. Learn about our history at the Halifax Museum and tour the Daytona International Speedway for an inside look at the track, drivers’ areas and garages. Come visit the Museum of Arts & Sciences to see all of the changes and exhibitions. Enjoy a Planetarium events or programs show or participate in one of our

and one of our favorite day trips includes visiting the Kennedy Space Center, located in a National Wildlife Refuge. If you love being on the water, a cruise on the Intracoastal can be relaxing and romantic. See striking views of our lighthouse as it crosses Ponce Inlet. A vacation is an ideal time to fish with an expert. Local captains will arrange everything you’ll need and throw in some good advice too. Whether you choose offshore fishing in the Atlantic or relaxing inshore fishing, both offer moments of sheer joy. Explore our natural areas from the seat of an airboat. It’s the time of year to see bald eagles that nest here after mating. Lots of alligators and beautiful birds that migrate during the cooler months. We have some simple pleasures to share too, like a walk on the beach in the morning to a chorus of seagulls.

Building a sandcastle is fun and sets creative instincts in motion at any age. With our tips, your family, or team of creative geniuses can build an A+ castle. First, gather your buckets, different sizes of containers and tools (shovels and plastic knives). Second, build a foundation of level, hard packed sand. To build your first tower, scoop wet sand into your largest container, pack it firmly and carefully turn it over without shaking. Around this center tower, build smaller towers with various containers. Mold castle walls using your hands, letting the heavy damp sand and gravity do the work for you. Decorate with shells or whatever you choose and carve out details with your knife. Final tip: keep the sand wet with a spray bottle filled with water. Don’t forget to snap a photo before the tide sweeps it away! ~ Georgia Brown

Ponce Inlet Jetty in Lighthouse Point Park is a popular 1,058 ft. fishing pier with many species of fish. The beach, restrooms, picnic tables and grills are nearby. Open daily, sunrise to sunset. $10 per car. 5000 S. Atlantic Ave., Ponce Inlet, 386-248-8072.

Manatees

in the Wild at Blue Spring

At Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, visitors can clearly see slow-moving manatees while they swim in the shallow waters of the spring run. From November through March, these endangered mammals are attracted by the constant 73 degree temperature of the spring, which they need to survive during cold spells. You can view these gentle creatures and their offspring from the park’s observation deck. Be sure to arrive early at this popular park or the parking area may be full and you will not be able to enter.

Beach Bonfires All it takes is some dry wood and starter kindling, no permit needed if you bring your own fire pit in Volusia County. In some locations, there are beach fire pits you can use, but need to be reserved, first-come first-served: www.volusia.org/services/public-protection/beach-safety/bonfires-onthe-beach.stml. Permits are required in Flagler County, so give them a call. Bonfires are permitted from November 1 to April 30 when turtles are not making nests. In summer months, lights on the beach are banned, because they would disorient females trying to lay eggs and confuse hatchlings scurrying toward the safety of the sea.

Call First for a Permit

Volusia County: For locations and reservations, visit Volusia.org then Beach Safety, Bonfires or call 326-239-6414, ex. 230. Flagler County: 386-517-2010

When the weather is cool, there’s nothing like a seaside bonfire to warm the night air. Add some drums, the mellow tones of a flute or guitars, and you have the makings of a therapeutic night under the stars.

SHOPPING

a shopper’s dream

Shopping while on vacation is one of life’s little adventures, whether you are looking for gifts for friends or something special for yourself. From the latest beachwear fashions to shell jewelry and wide brimmed hats, the stores in the Daytona Beach area are a shopper’s paradise.

For famous labels, put on your walking sandals and drive to the outlet malls. On weekends visit our famous flea and farmers markets for miles of booths with local produce, vintage objects, jewelry, watches, gourmet foods and maybe something unexpected to put in your suitcase.

Taking in window displays and opening doors to browse through the racks in our coastal shops often leads to unexpected pleasures and great buys. Choose clothing in softly comfortable fabrics and subtle pastel colors to enhance your tan!

For a change of pace, take a stroll in the historic downtown neighborhoods in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach and DeLand. Browse to your heart’s content and when you need a break, have coffee or lunch at a sidewalk table where locals and visitors like to gather.

Our stores have the latest in swimwear, sports equipment, cool sunglasses, oversized beach towels and quirky tee-shirts to please every member of the family.

In many neighborhoods you’ll find galleries displaying original photographs, paintings, hand-blown glass art and ceramics. You might find something unique that will look beautiful in your home. Remember that whatever you select, it will always bring back memories of your vacation.

New Smyrna Beach

DeLand Wings One of DeLand's most photographed locations is located in an alley in the 100 block of S. Woodland Blvd. What started off as an impulsive chalk drawing by artist Erica Group, is now a beautiful painting of a set of angel wings. Look for the wings, take a selfie & post your pic on facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #DelandWings. (grid AA-6)

Murals of DeLand Take a step back in time and go on a historical tour, a Mural walk if you will, down the streets of Historic DeLand. See memories of the city's past painted on the walls (15 in total)- each one tells a different story. You can download a Mural Walk brochure, with a map showing the location of each work of art. www.MainstreetDeland.org. (grid AA-6)

Stetson Mansion A Victorian mansion built in 1886, for famed hat maker John B Stetson. Each room is decorated differently and daily tours are available. At Christmas, each room has it's own tree & it's own unique themed decorations– a truly spectacular sight! Reservations required. 1031 Camphor Rd., DeLand, FL, 386-873-0167, www.StetsonMansion.com. DINING

a world of dining choices

One of the best parts of being on vacation is relaxing in a comfortable chair and dining on your favorite foods. The picture is complete if your restaurant overlooks a sun-drenched beach or a marina on the Intracoastal Waterway. Actually, anytime you eat by a window, good food seems to taste even better. You can always dine casually and still find a world of choices. Around here fish fillets, shrimp, clams and oysters fresh from the Atlantic Ocean are beyond the ordinary and beg to be tried. Seafood served any way you like it—broiled, baked, blackened, or pan sautéed—is one of the great rewards of dining in the Daytona Beach area. Our favorite lunch spots are either a sunlit deck by the beach or an umbrella table overlooking the Halifax River. A classic choice is a fish sandwich served in a basket with fries and washed down with a tall cool drink.

Grilles and sports bars have comfortable seating, widescreen TVs and menus that will please everyone who craves American favorites like thick juicy burgers, hot wings or a platter of slow-cooked, barbecued ribs. If you enjoy something different like Cajun, Polynesian, Italian or Mexican, check out our Dining Guide on pages 38 & 39 in this book for restaurants that will satisfy your desire for mouth-watering ethnic cuisines. Live music is often part of the scene, so if the spirit moves you, get up and dance! Ordering dessert is also part of being on vacation. Go ahead, indulge, that’s what vacations are for—making memories. Or take a walk on the beach in the moonlight with an ice cream cone in hand and don’t worry about the drips.
