Robert Wince was born and raised in a small town in Illinois. Liz Clayton was born in New York State but grew up in Orlando, FL. The two met 25 years ago at a church in Port Orange, FL. Robert was already an accomplished and mostly self- taught artist when they met. Liz had never entertained the thought of painting in her life. But being inspired by Robert’s work and with Robert’s encouragement, Liz took art classes at Daytona State College, and they have been painting together ever since. Robert specializes in landscape paintings. In addition to painting the scenery of Florida, he has traveled extensively throughout the west where he enjoys plein air painting of our national parks. His works include both oils and acrylics. Liz prefers the challenge of creating still life paintings in their home studio. Most of her paintings are done in oil, but she has recently added pastel birds, florals, and landscapes to her portfolio. Both artists also enjoy taking painting trips to Europe. Robert and Liz both exhibit in local outdoor art shows and have each been invited to exhibit their work in one man and one woman shows. They were recently invited to be in a show called “He Said, She Said” at The Art League of Daytona Beach, FL which featured couples that paint. Through working and collaborating together, they have both received numerous awards for their work. Their paintings are regularly exhibited at The Artists’ Workshop in New Smyrna Beach and The Art League in Daytona.

S ightseeing is at its best on a bicycle ride with interesting things to see, like boats moving slowly on the Halifax River, pleasant city parks and one of our best-kept secrets, shady trails in the maritime forest at beautiful Tomoka State Park.

In Ormond Beach, a good place to start is the parking lot on the southwest side of the Granada Boulevard Bridge (SR 40). If you ride south, a shared use trail passes through neighborhood parks with swings for children, gazebos where you can stop to rest, and piers where anglers are catching fish. On a mix of sidewalks and paved segments, you can ride as far south as Mason Avenue between Holly Hill and Daytona Beach. If you ride north, follow the sidewalk on the west side of North Beach Street. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll ride through an Old Florida neighborhood with large trees that form a tunnel of branches to keep you cool. At Inglesa Avenue a new 1-mile paved path through oak hammocks leads to the entrance of Tomoka State Park. You can explore all of the hard-packed, shady trails on your bicycle, stop for refreshments at the Outpost and even rent a canoe to paddle the Tomoka River. If you see people gathered on the dune crossovers with binoculars, they are probably watching whales. The calving grounds for endangered North Atlantic Right Whales are off our coast, and if you’re lucky, you may see mothers with calves some distance offshore. Volunteer whale spotters help scientists by reporting whale sightings as they migrate from their feeding grounds in the northeastern US to the shallow waters off NE Florida. Scientists believe there are fewer than 500 in the population. Spotters look for a V-shaped blow. High places like dune crossovers and tall buildings give the best views. If you want to learn more, short lectures by author/whale watcher Frank Gromling are offered at Gamble Rogers State Park. Call 386-517-2086 for a schedule. If you spot a whale call 888-979-4253. Sightings are recorded by the Marine Resources Council and sent to a national database. The Council verifies sightings and notifies ships in the area to keep a lookout for whales. Most injuries to whales occur from collisions with ships. The Marineland Right Whale Project (aswh.org) trains volunteers to assist scientists in sightings, however, observers are required by US law to keep a distance of 500 yards. 2) The Sugar Mill Ruins Once a highly functional sugar mill, built during in the early 19th century. This 17 acre historic site contains the ruins of a the highly functional sugar mill, as well as other buildings, which were destroyed during the war between the Seminole Indians and the United States. Sugar Mill Ruins, 600 Mission Dr., 386-427-2284. 3) Old Fort Park-Turnbull Ruins The Turnbull Ruins are a bit of a mystery. A coquina block foundation overlooking the Intracoastal is said to be the remains of a mansion that was started by Andrew Turnbull from 1766-1777. It's believed that he attempted to build his personal mansion on these coquina remains. Others think the ruins may be the remains of a pre-colonial fort or a colonial church. Located at Washington St. and N. Riverside Dr. 4) Black Heritage Museum The Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum houses photographs, memorabilia and artifacts used to educate citizens and students about the history and race relations in small town Florida. The town of 100 people existed between 1877 and 1900. The city's decline began after three freezes during the late 1880s and 1890s that destroyed the town's citrus crops. It stands 50 feet tall and covers two acres. 11 Aviles Street This two and a half story building at 11 Aviles Street, was constructed between 1864 and 1885. The southern half of this building appears on 1884 insurance map. The area of the colonial city south of the Plaza and north of Bridge Street, is the 16th century (1572) original colonial village of St.Augustine.
