W

Welcome to Daytona Beach, one of America’s most popular destinations! With more to see and do than ever before, you’ll find the area jam-packed with an array of outstanding activities, fabulous shopping choices and extraordinary dining options. Stroll or play along 23 miles of the “World’s Most Famous Beach” where you can choose to drive on hard packed sand in designated areas or opt for vehicle free zones. And you don’t have to leave your best friend back home because there are designated areas along the beach where pets are always welcome. When you are done with the beach, step off the beaten path to enjoy our many rivers and lakes. Looking for something a little more sedate? Lie back and take a leisurely boat ride where your guide will tell you all about the birds, plants and wildlife that make up the eco system. Did you know that the Indian River in New Smyrna Beach is the most biologically diverse estuary in North America?

amer ica’s beach Our calendar is brimming with lots to see and do and our colorful, detailed maps will make it easy for you to locate all the attractions. Carry a copy of SEE wherever you go and you will always be in the know on all the happenings around town. Look for the NEW symbol for insider’s tips on the latest experiences. If you are on a budget, check out the EXTRAS on pages 20-21 for activities and entertainment where prices range from free to inexpensive. Here’s a ‘not to NEW be missed’ experience: Take a selfie with #88! Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s winning Chevy is part of the Daytona International Speedway Track Tour. It’s traditional to have the winning car of the Daytona 500 reside at the track following a win at the annual Great American Race. Look for #88 at the end of the tour. We hope you enjoy this copy of SEE and thank you for choosing the Daytona Beach Area for your vacation!

ACTIVITIES

getting the most out of your vacation

D

Drive along the beach and follow in the tracks of famed drivers who once raced along “The World’s Most Famous Beach”. Feel the thrills of the early days of NASCAR, but watch your speed! Follow in their footsteps, not in their racing skills! There’s lots of things to do along these beaches. Park the car and watch surfers hang ten in what’s considered to be among the top places in the world for the sport. Pack a picnic lunch and watch and listen as the waves crash against the surf. Frolic in the water, do a little surf fishing or build a sandcastle. When excitement for the beach wanes, you’re in for a treat because there’s much more to do here than meets the eye. Fish inshore or offshore, from a dock, in the surf or navigate the best fishing spots by boat. Golf on a variety of courses that represent all sorts of challenges. Rent a canoe, a kayak or learn to paddleboard. Get warm and fuzzy with nature at one of the many parks dotted throughout the area. Bring your binoculars

and discover over 400 species of birds or watch as dolphins play in the surf. While you are thinking about water, stop by the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet to learn more about the NEW Turtle Tots program. Kids between the ages of two and five meet every month for games, crafts and stories. Call 386-304-5545 for reservations. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Visit one of our many art galleries where you’ll find works by the great masters and up and coming masters of tomorrow. Stop by one of our history museums and explore the humble beginnings of the Daytona Beach area. Here, it’s not a matter of what to do – it’s a matter of what to do next! Get in on all the action at Go Kart City! Come out and enjoy recently renovated golfing greens and bright landscape, then spin your wheels in a go cart on a slick, NEW track. Bring the family! There’s something here for everyone!

Paddleboarding Paddleboarding in calm water is good exercise and a fresh way to watch a gorgeous sunset. It doesn’t seem like much effort, starting on your knees then getting to a standing position on a large surfboard. Wider, flatter boards are more stable, making them useful for fishing the shallows. Some are large enough for a person to sit in front of you. Paddling is similar to canoeing with a side-to-side stroke. Choose a paddle that's roughly 6” to 8” taller than you are and take a PFD (personal flotation device). The U.S. Coast Guard requires it if you are paddling on navigable water. Whether you’re following an eco trail or just interested in a laid back type of transportation, this sport is easy to learn and will keep you fit. So get paddling! ~ Georgia Brown

back, shack style restaurants, usually located on the water where you can enjoy your favorite libation and live music. In the Daytona Beach area, you can start your day with breakfast while watching the sunrise at an oceanfront restaurant. End the day viewing a spectacular sunset while dining on the river. The attire for most establishments is casual, but if you are looking for a more formal dining experience, there are many choices there as well. Hog Heaven Bar-B-Q is one of the more casual experiences and their

Pack an assortment of satisfying food and keep it cool. You don’t want to drag a big cooler across the sand. Instead choose lightweight insulated picnic bags lined with freezer packs. Plan a menu that’s partly homemade and partly from a deli. Rollup sandwiches of roast beef and cheese in takeout boxes are the easiest. Chilled cherries and small bunches of grapes will last all day. If you bring pre-cut fruit from your hotel or condo, opt for juicy chunks of melon, pineapple and strawberries. Pick up plastic utensils that are half fork/half spoon and serve in wide-mouthed 8 oz. disposable cups. Carry drinks in a tote made of the same material as wet suits, or a separate cooler, as it will be opened more often. Cans of ginger ale or lemon/lime soda are ideal to quench your thirst in the sun. The rules for containers on Volusia County beaches are no glass & no alcohol. Finally, spread a large blanket to keep the sand away, and use the trash and recycling bins when you leave!
