a mer ica’s beach

Welcome to Daytona Beach – The World’s Most Famous Beach. This bold designation stems from the City’s rich racing history and heralds back to an era where cars actually raced on the hard-packed sand. Today you can immerse yourself in the past when you drive along select areas of more than 23 miles of sandy beaches. While you are there, be sure to enjoy all the beach has to offer: from sunbathing to building sandcastles to creating memories you’ll recall for years to come. Our calendar is packed with activities and events and you can use our maps to get there. Be sure to carry a copy of SEE with you so you never miss a single experience. Check out our money saving coupons in the back of the book to add value to your vacation. Look for the NEW symbol for our insider’s tips on what’s happening around town. You’ll be glad you read the EXTRAS on pages 20-21 for side trips and things to do that are inexpensive or free.

Daytona’s newest eco adventure, the NEW Zoom Air zip line, is built in the trees of Tuscawilla Park. After you’ve taken part in this exciting activity, the following day can be a lazy, ‘guilt free’ day at the beach.

NEW

The Friends of the Bandshell Concert Series will have you singing along with your favorite artists. Tribute shows will pay homage to Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffet and more. Check our calendars for complete details. Anglers and golf enthusiasts will find plenty of places to fish and play and art devotees can visit an almost endless supply of galleries. Dining options range from the casual to the elegant and selections abound from mouthwatering burgers to authentic ethnic delights.

There’s so much to do that you’ll have to return again and again. Enjoy this copy of SEE and thank you for choosing the Daytona Beach Area for your vacation!

And when you are looking for something else to do, you’ll find that no matter where you stay - from Ormond Beach to New Smyrna Beach or anywhere in between the fun and activities never cease.

getting the most out of your vacation

W

When you visit Daytona Beach, you will never have a problem finding something to do. In fact, your most difficult task will be deciding what to do. There is a never ending list of activities to satisfy every whim. Daytona Beach is a standout. There are 26 miles of hard packed sand where you can soak up some rays, build a sandcastle, play a game of volleyball or watch as surfers hang ten in the place known for having the best surfing along the coast of the Eastern Seaboard.

of the Inlet Tournament! It all takes place at Inlet Harbor Marina where you can watch the weigh-ins and awards from a waterfront seat. Take a ride to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex where Angry Birds have invaded! NEW The Angry Bird Space Encounter is ideal for families looking to enter a strange space universe. Create your own Angry Bird or enjoy the Eggsteroids Slingshot and Red Planet Laser Challenge.

If you love the great outdoors, the area is overflowing with lush parks, world-class golf and tennis courts and inshore and offshore fishing. Take a guided river tour, or seize the moment and take charge of your water destiny in a kayak or canoe.

You will always be entertained at local art galleries and be sure to add to your ‘don’t Miss’ list NEW “A Treasury of Indian and Persian Miniature Paintings”, on tap at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. The saturated colors and symbolic, exotic imagery will transport you from everyday reality to an enchanted world filled with wonder and fantasy.

Fishing enthusiasts will want to check out the King of the Inlet fishing competition and this year, the NEW Queen

We have some simple pleasures to share too, like a walk on the beach in the morning to a chorus of seagulls.

Building a sandcastle is fun and sets creative instincts in motion at any age. With our tips, your family, or team of creative geniuses can build an A+ castle. First, gather your buckets, different sizes of containers and tools (shovels and plastic knives). Second, build a foundation of level, hard packed sand. To build your first tower, scoop wet sand into your largest container, pack it firmly and carefully turn it over without shaking. Around this center tower, build smaller towers with various containers. Mold castle walls using your hands, letting the heavy damp sand and gravity do the work for you. Decorate with shells or whatever you choose and carve out details with your knife. Final tip: keep the sand wet with a spray bottle filled with water. Don’t forget to snap a photo before the tide sweeps it away! ~ Georgia Brown

DINING a world of dining choices

O

One of the great joys of life is eating and there’s no better time to indulge in your favorite foods then while you are vacationing. The Daytona Beach area offers a world of selections and dining venues. You can enjoy a meal on the river at sunset, or watch the sunrise over breakfast. Sip coffee at a cozy outdoor café or savor the ambiance as you dine indoors. Most restaurants offer a more casual experience so you never have to don a jacket or gown. But for a special occasion or if you are seeking a more formal atmosphere, those options are available as well. The choices of what to eat are more varied than the dining venues. Freshly caught Florida seafood is prepared to your liking. It can be fried, broiled, grilled or blackened and topped with everything from mango salsa or spritzed with a juicy Florida lime.

26 www.SEE-DaytonaBeach.com | Dining

Meals can be as simple as a succulent burger with all the toppings to mouthwatering filet mignon. For a diverse group of one stop dining options in a variety of price ranges, the Ocean Walk Shoppes fits the bill. You can watch the crashing waves and enjoy the action at the Daytona Beach Boardwalk, all while dining at your favorite hot spots. Choose from Ker’s Winghouse, Sloppy Joe’s, Johnny Rockets, Mai Tai, Bubba Gumps, Ocean Walk Subs, Starbucks or Cold Stone Creamery. If that’s not enough,

MANGO

SALSA

Recipe: 2- Mangos 1- Large Tomato 1- Small Onion 1t - Fresh Cilantro 1- Jalapeno Pepper 1- Lime Peel, remove seeds and chop mangos. Dice tomato, and then mince onion, cilantro and jalapeno, remembering to remove the seeds from the jalapeno. Squeeze the juice from the lime.

It’s a local favorite guaranteed to please a crowd. It’s Mango Salsa and if you’ve sampled any of the mouthwatering seafood here, you’ve probably seen it on the menu of your favorite restaurant. There’s nothing as tasty as a juicy, Florida grown mango and nothing will make your recipes pop like the addition of the popular fruit. Mango Salsa is a delightful topping for fish and it also makes a memorable dip for tortilla chips. Its uses are limited only by your imagination. When you get home, you might just come up with several other uses as well. No matter how you slice it or dice it, your guests will love the palatepleasing flavor of mangos.

Stir everything together in a large bowl and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serves 8 28 www.SEE-DaytonaBeach.com | Dining

SHOPPING a shopper’s dream

T

There’s no better time to shop than while on vacation and no better place to tackle the sport than while visiting Daytona Beach. From colorful, logo t-shirts to name dropping high end labels, you’ll find the perfect gift for yourself or memorable souvenirs for family and friends. Indulge yourself in the trendiest swimsuits, or pick up sunglasses or sunscreen. From trinkets to fine jewelry, shopping options abound. Stroll historic shopping areas in Daytona Beach, DeLand, and New Smyrna Beach for unique one of a kind items including original arts and crafts by local artisans. Casual beachwear can be had at local flea markets, at the mall or at any number of coastal shops like The Maui Nix Surf Shop. Maui Nix is proud to be carrying two new items. NEW Spy Happy Lenses are designed to let in more long-wave blue light, the

‘good’ rays, and block the ‘bad’ waves to promote balance in the body, fostering a positive ‘uplift’ in mood and alertness. Polarized and unmatched color contrast-enhancing lenses are now standard! If you love being green, pick up a pair of NEW Billabong Recycler Boardshorts. One pair saves approximately 25 PET bottles from our oceans and landfills. These baggies offer the same stretch and performance Billabong is known for! After shopping the stores of the Ocean Walk Shoppes, relax and catch first run movies at the Paragon Ocean Walk 10. Recently renovated, you won’t mind spending a few hours curled up in NEW luxurious leather seats. The big screen format utilizes Sony 4K HD digital projection technology to enhance your theater experience. And if popcorn doesn’t make it for you, check out the expanded menu for new food options.

Express Yourself!

Brightly colored Hawaiian shirts confirm Florida’s kick-back surfer attitude and give you an immediate sense of relaxation. Choosing one becomes a personal statement that says a lot about your individuality. The origins of the floral patterns can be traced to Japanese designs and go back hundreds of years in the South Seas. “Aloha” shirts, as they are sometimes called, were first created for tourists during the 1930s. Hawaiian businessmen wore them to support local clothing manufacturers. President Truman wore them and their popularity soared during WW II when servicemen and women brought them back from Hawaii as gifts for family and friends. Wildly colorful, loose fitting and comfortable, the shirts are a natural choice in Florida. Worn on dress-down Fridays, the shirts send a happy-go lucky, ready for fun message. Both gals and guys love that breast pocket—the perfect place for your sunglasses—so stock up and take a few home for your TGIF wardrobe. ~ Georgia Brown

Looking for some old fashioned, beach fun? Go fly a kite! There’s no better place to do that than along the beach where there are no power lines and plenty of open space. Year -round breezes make conditions ideal for the novice or more experienced flyers. Pick up a kite at any gift or souvenir shop. Prices start around $7 and depending on your skill, or lack thereof, purchase the least expensive model. Your kit will come with easy to follow instructions and no special tools are required. Kite flying is not a singular sport. For best results, you need a companion. One person should hold the string, known as a bridle; the companion will grasp the kite. The kite should be facing both you and the wind. Wind direction is important or you will be dragging, not flying, your kite. Unwind 10-15 yards of string, motion to your friend to release the kite, then start moving. Release more string to fly higher; less to lower the kite. Follow these instructions and your kite and spirits will soar!
