getting the most out of your vacation

Y

You may be tempted to never leave the beach, but when you’re ready to get out and see the sights, there are countless ways to have fun. To see turtles and wildlife up close, visit our Marine Science Center. Expect to be fascinated by the view from our beach Ferris wheel and intrigued by our museums and nature preserves. Our area hosts many festivals and cultural events, including concerts and exhibits at our galleries and museums. Learn about our history at the Halifax Museum and tour the Daytona International Speedway for an inside look at the track, drivers’ areas and garages. If you love being on the water, a cruise on the Intracoastal can be relaxing and romantic. The NEW Water Taxi Express offers striking views of our lighthouse as it crosses Ponce Inlet. An all-day ticket connects you to popular marinas and restaurants all weekend.

A vacation is an ideal time to fish with an expert. Inland Fishing Charters wants all their fishing fans to know what’s NEW Trout Season is now open all year! Local captains will arrange everything you’ll need and throw in some good advice too. Whether you choose offshore fishing for tuna and marlin in the Atlantic or relaxing inshore fishing, both offer moments of sheer joy. If golf is your game, there are more than 25 top rated golf courses within a half hour of the beach, including those designed by legends of the game at LPGA International. To explore our natural side, take an eco tour on a personal watercraft or a safari in a Jeep. On an airboat ride you’ll see alligators and eagles in remote environments. We have some simple pleasures to share too, like a walk on the beach in the morning to a chorus of seagulls.

in the Wild at Blue Spring

At Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, visitors can clearly see slow-moving manatees while they swim in the shallow waters of the spring run. From November through March, these endangered mammals are attracted by the constant 73 degree temperature of the spring, which they need to survive during cold spells. You can view these gentle creatures and their offspring from the park’s observation deck. Be sure to arrive early at this popular park or the parking area may be full and you will not be able to enter.

Bike Week

History

Early motorcycle designers began attaching motors to bikes and testing them at Daytona Beach over a century ago. In 1907 a motorcycle achieved a top speed of 136 mph! Bike Week officially began in 1937 when races were held on an oval course that was laid out on the sand and A1A. In 1961 the races were moved to the new Daytona International Speedway. Since the 1980s, Bike Week has drawn hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts who come to watch the bike parades and major motorcycle races at the Speedway. To learn more, visit the Halifax Museum. DINING a world of dining choices

O

One of the best parts of being on vacation is relaxing in a comfortable chair and dining on your favorite foods. The picture is complete if your restaurant overlooks a sun-drenched beach or a marina on the Intracoastal Waterway. Actually, anytime you eat by a window, good food seems to taste even better. You can always dine casually and still find a world of choices. Around here fish fillets, shrimp, clams and oysters fresh from the Atlantic Ocean are beyond the ordinary and beg to be tried. Seafood served any way you like it—broiled, baked, blackened, or pan sautéed—is one of the great rewards of dining in the Daytona Beach area. Our favorite lunch spots are either a sunlit deck by the beach or an umbrella table overlooking the Halifax River. A classic choice is a grouper sandwich served in a basket with fries and washed down with a tall cool drink.

20 www.SEE-DaytonaBeach.com | Dining

Grilles and sports bars have comfortable seating, wide-screen TVs and menus that will please everyone who craves American favorites like thick juicy burgers, hot wings or a platter of slowcooked, barbecued ribs. If you enjoy something different like Cajun, Polynesian, Italian or Mexican, check out our Dining Guide on page 22 in this book for restaurants that will satisfy your desire for mouth-watering ethnic cuisines. Live music is often part of the scene, so if the spirit moves you, get up and dance! Ordering dessert is also part of being on vacation. Go ahead, indulge, that’s what vacations are for—making memories. Or take a walk on the beach in the moonlight with an ice cream cone in hand and don’t worry about the drips.

The great appeal of flip flops is their simplicity. Their

soft rubbery soles and affordability have made them

a staple in your wardrobe. Once you add decorations they reflect your individuality.

Embellished with shells, beads, rhinestones or

multi-colored straps, they become an eye-catching accessory to your outfit.

Strappy sandals are a step up from informal.

The curve of narrow straps draws attention to your

shapely legs. Add a chunky heel and you have an

attractive profile with the stability of a walking shoe.

A low wedge sandal in silver lame and rhinestones

will sparkle in the twilight, slenderize your foot and

take you anywhere—even dancing—in comfort.
