UN PERÚ DE EXPERIENCIAS Perú: A country of experiences Además del significado propio de cada celebración, feriados como Semana Santa y fechas como el Día de la Madre también son aprovechados por muchos peruanos para trasladarse a otro punto del país. A veces es para reunirse con familiares y amigos, en otras ocasiones es para conocer nuevos destinos, o incluso solo para descansar de la rutina. Lo cierto es que Perú ofrece para sus propios ciudadanos un sinfín de experiencias en costa, sierra y selva. En esta edición de Peruvian Magazine también nos trasladamos de un punto a otro del país. Como destino de portada está la ciudad de Arequipa, cuya historia colonial y arquitectura señorial son solo el punto de partida para conocer sobre su arte, su gastronomía y su tradición textil, así como para descubrir nuevas rutas en las afueras de la ciudad. La Ruta del Sillar, por ejemplo, que nos deja ver la monumentalidad de las canteras de sillar, es un paseo que deja sorprendido a cualquiera. En el corazón verde de Loreto, visitamos la Reserva Nacional Pacaya Samiria, una de las Áreas Naturales Protegidas más emblemáticas de Perú, para entender cómo la pesca responsable se ha convertido en medio sostenible de subsistencia y también en celebración de su riqueza y diversidad. Al otro lado del país nos recibe un paisaje completamente distinto, pero igual de único e inesperado: en la sierra de Lima, el pequeño poblado de Laraos tiene un sistema de andenes preincaicos con más de mil metros de diferencia entre terrazas. Es ahí que se desarrolla su exitoso programa de turismo rural comunitario. Una experiencia que le cambia la vida a cualquier viajero, a cualquier peruano.
In addition to the particular meaning of each celebration, holidays such as Easter and dates such as Mother’s Day are also used by many Peruvians to travel to another part of the country. Sometimes it is to meet with family and friends, while on other occasions it is to visit new destinations, or even just to take a break from everyday routine. The truth is that Peru offers countless experiences for its own citizens on the coast, mountains, and jungle. In this Peruvian Magazine edition we also go from one place to another in the country. The destination on the cover is the city of Arequipa, whose colonial history and stately architecture are just the starting point to know about its art, its gastronomy, and its textile tradition as well as to discover new routes in the outskirts of the city. The Sillar Route, for example, shows us the magnificence of the sillar quarries; everyone will be quite amazed with that visit. In the green heart of Loreto, we visited the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, one of the most emblematic Natural Protected Areas of Peru, to understand how responsible fishing has become a sustainable means of subsistence and also to celebrate its wealth and diversity. On the other side of the country we discovered a completely different landscape, but just as unique and unexpected. In the mountains of Lima, the small town of Laraos has a pre-Inca platform system that has a variation of more than a thousand meters between terraces. A successful rural community tourism program is developed there. This is an experience that changes the life of any traveler, any Peruvian.

Comunicador especializado en temas relacionados al desarrollo humano con énfasis en conservación y desarrollo en la Amazonía peruana. Su principal herramienta para comunicar es la fotografía, desde la cual intenta conectar el mundo rural profundo con audiencias urbanas en Perú y el mundo. Sus imágenes han servido, entre otras cosas, para impulsar la creación del Parque Nacional Sierra del Divisor.

Casi 500 años después de la Conquista del Imperio Incaico, el enigma de la ciudad secreta de los incas sigue siendo un misterio y un reto para los aventureros que han querido encontrarla. Almost 500 years after the Conquest of the Inca Empire, the enigma of the secret city of the Incas remains a mystery and a challenge for the adventurers who have wanted to find it.
El origen de la leyenda de Paititi, el legendario reino incaico, data de la época de la caída del imperio, de cuando se ofrecían a los españoles cuartos repletos de oro a cambio de la libertad de un rey inca capturado. Conocida también como La Cuidad de Oro de los Incas o El Dorado, es uno de los enigmas arqueológicos más grandes de Sudamérica. Empieza durante el apogeo del Tahuantinsuyo, en plena guerra civil, cuando Atahualpa había tomado el lugar del heredero legítimo al trono, su medio hermano Huáscar. Los españoles conquistadores aprovecharon esta coyuntura de división.
The origin of the legend of Paititi, the legendary Inca kingdom, dates from the time of the fall of the empire, when the Spanish were offered rooms full of gold in exchange for the freedom of a captured Inca king. Also known as the Golden City of the Incas or El Dorado, it is one of the largest archeological enigmas in South America. It began during the peak of Tahuantinsuyo, in the heat of civil war, when Atahualpa had taken the place of the legitimate heir to the throne, his half-brother Huáscar. The Spanish conquerors took advantage of this division crisis.

A lo largo de los años, el oro prometido ha sido la luz cegadora para expedicionarios y aventureros que han intentado encontrar esta ciudad dorada, y no son pocos los que han perdido la vida en esta búsqueda. Algunos aseguran haber estado cerca pero la tupida vegetación y lo peligroso y enrevesado del camino se encargaron de ocultarles su objetivo. Lo cierto es que nadie ha regresado para afirmar haber visto o haber estado en Paititi: sus rumas de oro siguen perteneciendo al corazón de la selva y de la mitología.
Throughout the years, the promised gold has been the blinding light for expedition teams and adventurers who have tried to find this golden city, and more than a few have lost their lives in this search. Some claim to have been close to it, but that the dense vegetation and dangerous and confusing road prevented them from achieving their goal. The truth is that no one who has returned has claimed having seen or been in Paititi: the piles of gold still belong to the heart of the jungle and mythology.

Sugiero viajar embarazada hasta los seis o siete meses como máximo si es que el embarazo ha ido sin ningún problema (consultando con el doctor antes). En general, las aerolíneas no permiten abordar con más de siete meses y pueden pedir certificado médico. Es importante revisar con tiempo las normas de la línea aérea.
Para viajar al extranjero con niños menores de edad sin que los acompañen los dos papás se debe presentar permiso notarial. Para obtenerlo se necesita presentar partida de nacimiento original y copia del niño, su DNI o pasaporte, y DNI o pasaporte de ambos padres. Más información en migraciones.gob.pe

El Puente de los Suspiros permitía el paso entre las calles Ayacucho y la Ermita, la antigua capilla de adobe que aún es uno de los atractivos de la zona. Luego de la Guerra del Pacífico quedó destruído y pasó por una serie de reconstrucciones; sin embargo, sigue siendo símbolo del romanticismo limeño e inspiración de

imágenes y versos como los de Chabuca. También es paso para las miles parejas enamoradas que lo recorren tomadas de la mano, a quienes debe su nombre. Según la leyenda, a quien cruce el puente por primera vez sin respirar se le cumplirán sus deseos. Puentecito escondido entre follajes y entre añoranzas (Little bridge hidden among foliage and yearnings), as Chabuca Granda’s song goes, thinking of the wooden bridge built in 1876 to join the ends of the ravine of Barranco, the famous Bajada de Baños that leads to the sea. The Bridge of Sighs allowed the access
between Ayacucho Street and La Ermita, the old adobe chapel that is still one of the attractions of the area. The bridge was destroyed after the Pacific War and went through a series of reconstructions; however, it remains a symbol of Lima's romanticism and the inspiration of images and verses like those of Chabuca. It is also a path for thousands of couples in love who walk it holding hands, to whom the bridge owes its name. According to legend, whoever crosses the bridge for the first time and holding their breath, will see their wishes fulfilled.

La clasificación de la selección peruana a la copa del Mundo Rusia 2018 era el sueño del Perú entero: luego de 36 años el equipo de todos vuelve a un mundial y se esperan muchas banderas y camisetas blanquirojas adornando las graderías de los estadios rusos. Fredy Gamarra, presidente de la Cámara Nacional de Turismo (Canatur), estima que aproximadamente 3000 peruanos viajarán entre dieciséis y cuarenta horas aproximadamente (dependiendo de la ruta que tomen para llegar a Europa) para llegar a Rusia y ser parte de la contienda mundialista. Pero, ¿cuánto cuesta estar en un estadio en el Mundial de Rusia?

La comercialización del café es un negocio complejo y es fundamental que se fortalezca el consumo interno de nuestro grano. Además de ser una fuente de empleo para más de dos millones de peruanos en toda la cadena productiva, cotiza en la bolsa de valores en un mercado internacional muy competitivo. Actualmente, menos del 10% de la producción interna es destinada para el consumo del país. Nuestros principales destinos de exportación son Bélgica, Alemania y Estados Unidos. El consumo interno debería ser el siguiente paso a seguir en un proyecto nacional de largo aliento que impulse la producción del café. Mientras tanto, en términos de la importación, el impacto de la roya, enfermedad que afecta al cafeto y reduce en más de un 30% de su producción con pérdidas muy importantes, disminuyó la producción de café peruano a 3.1 millones de sacos en-

tre los años 2012 y 2014, en comparación con los 4.9 millones de sacos que se habían producido hasta el 2011. Cuatro años después, el potencial peruano de exportación de café se está recuperando. Sin embargo, los altos costos de financiamiento, el difícil acceso a los servicios y las duras condiciones del mercado, limitan las acciones de los productores. Para el 2018, se estima que las exportaciones de café superarán los 3.9 millones de sacos si en las zonas productoras el apoyo a los productores e inversión en el sector son oportunos. Se requieren acciones que fomenten el cultivo sostenible y de calidad a través de investigación y tecnología en los procesos, y una asistencia técnica que permita mejorar el manejo de las cosechas y post cosechas. La mejora en el transporte y en los costos de financiamiento y comercialización también son clave para seguir creciendo.
Perú está recuperando la producción de su café, el cual es reconocido a nivel mundial por su alta calidad. Según cálculos de la Organización Internacional del Café (OIC, por sus siglas en inglés), la demanda mundial de café aumentará de 155 a 205 millones de sacos entre los años 2015 y 2030 y se espera que el Perú pase de 3.9 a 7.5 millones en ese período para mantener su posición entre los diez primeros del mundo. Es una ciudad que destaca por varios motivos: su arquitectura señorial, la naturaleza que la rodea y le otorga su conocido temperamento, y el color de la piedra volcánica que da forma a sus calles y edificios más emblemáticos. Arequipa es uno de los destinos con más historia, actividad turística y riqueza cultural del Perú. It is a city that stands out for several reasons: its stately architecture; the nature surrounding it, which gives it its well-known character; and the color of the volcanic stone that shapes its most emblematic streets and buildings. Arequipa is one of the destinations with more history, tourist activity, and cultural wealth of Peru.
Ciudad colonial. Rodeada por tres volcanes, Pichu Pichu, Chachani y Misti, y construida en base a una piedra blanca que es ceniza eruptiva acumulada y compactada por el tiempo. Un recorrido arquitectónico de Arequipa puede empezar desde su Centro Histórico, que fue declarado Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la Unesco en el 2000. Su Plaza de Armas es uno de los atractivos de la llamada “Ciudad Blanca” y el lugar donde fue fundada en agosto de 1540. Con una pileta de bronce en el centro que lleva un duendecillo de cobre en la parte más alta, la plaza se encuentra rodeada por la Catedral que fue construida en sillar y con bóvedas de ladrillo, por las Iglesias de La Compañía y Nuestra Señora de la Merced y por los portales de estilo neorenacentista fabricados en granito. Un conjunto realmente notable. A tan solo cuatro cuadras de la Plaza Mayor se encuentra el Monasterio de Santa Catalina, un complejo turístico religioso que fue fundado en 1579 para albergar a monjas provenientes de familias

An architectural tour of Arequipa may start at its Historic Center, which was declared a World Heritage Centre by UNESCO in 2000. The Main Square is one of the attractions of the “White City”, as it is called, and the place where it was founded in August 1540. With a bronze fountain in the center that has a copper pixie in the highest part, the square is surrounded by the Cathedral, which was built in sillar (volcanic rock) and brick vaults; La Compañía and Nuestra Señora de la Merced Churches; and the Neo-Renaissance portals which are made of granite. A really remarkable set. Just four blocks from the Main Square is the Monastery of Santa Catalina, a religious tourist complex that was founded in 1579 to house nuns from creole, mestizo, and noble families. The main attraction of the monastery is its architecture of solid blocks, large

criollas, mestizas y nobles. El principal encanto del monasterio está en su arquitectura de bloques sólidos, grandes volúmenes e imponentes cúpulas en sus techos. También en los colores de sus patios y en sus flores. Y es que la arquitectura de la cuidad de Arequipa es definitivamente una de sus principales atractivos. Otra muestra de ello es La Casona Goyeneche, de estilo colonial, que fue inaugurada por sus propietarios en 1771. En su interior se encuentra una magnífica colección de arte republicano: lienzos de la Escuela Cusqueña y esculturas de la Escuela Granadina del siglo XVII. La Casa del Moral es otro de los lugares que cuenta con historia propia: considerado uno de los monumentos más antiguos de la arquitectura arequipeña del periodo barroco, aún mantiene parte de su mobiliario original del siglo XVIII. Muchos de estos lugares forman parte del Barrio de San Lázaro, uno de los barrios arequipeños más antiguos. Pasear por las calles Jerusalén y Puente Grau y por la avenida Juan de la Torre es trasladarse a otra época. Pero no solamente en el centro de la cuidad se puede disfrutar de la arquitectura de Arequipa. El barrio de Yanahuara, ubicado a dos kilómetros de la Plaza Mayor, cuenta con una de las mejores vistas de la cuidad. Desde el Mirador de Yanahuara, además de disfrutar de una mirada privilegiada de la Ciudad Blanca, también se pueden contemplar a la distancia los volcanes que la guardan.

Another example of this is La Casona Goyeneche, of colonial style, which was inaugurated by its owners in 1771. Inside is a magnificent collection of republican art: canvases of the Cusco School and sculptures of the Granadine School of the XVII century. La Casa del Moral is another place that has its own history: considered one of the oldest architecture monuments of Arequipa of the Baroque period, it still maintains part of its original furniture of the eighteenth century. Many of these places are part of the Barrio de San Lázaro, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Arequipa. Walking through the streets of Jerusalén and Puente Grau and Juan de la Torre Avenue is moving to another era. But it is not only in the center of the city that one can enjoy the architecture of Arequipa. The neighborhood of Yanahuara, located two kilometers from the Main Square, has one of the best views of the city. From the Mirador de Yanahuara, in addition to enjoying a privileged view of the White City, you can also see the volcanoes that guard it from a distance.

TRADICIONES AREQUIPEÑAS Una de las principales experiencias de Arequipa es, sin duda, su gastronomía. No es exagerado afirmar que es una de las ciudades en las que mejor se come en el Perú, y eso es ya decir bastante. Hablar de la cocina arequipeña es detenerse en sus picanterías. Estas tienen su origen en el consumo de chicha de maíz y en los locales de la periferia de la ciudad donde esta se bebía, allá por el siglo XVI. A partir del siglo XIX es que se empieza a incorporar la preparación de platos típicos, y que estos espacios empiezan a formar parte de la vida social y gastronómica de la ciudad. En 2014, las picanterías arequipeñas fueron declaradas Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación, y con eso se celebró también el placer y el arte de platos típicos como el rocoto relleno, la ocopa arequipeña y su clásico chupe de camarones, por nombrar solo algunos. Otra tradición arequipeña que se ha convertido en una importante industria es la textil. Arequipa es foco nacional del desarrollo de la

producción de algodón y de fibra de alpaca, vicuña y lana. El sector textil es una de la actividades económicas más importantes de Arequipa, no solo para las empresas emblemáticas -como el Grupo Inca y Michell & Cía- sino para el millar de micro y pequeñas empresas formalizadas que se dedican a la fabricación de prendas e insumos en fibra de camélidos. TRADITIONS OF AREQUIPA One of the main experiences in Arequipa is, without a doubt, its gastronomy. It is not an exaggeration to say that it is one of the cities where people eat best in Peru, and that is enough to say. To talk about gastronomy in Arequipa is to talk about its picanterías. They can be traced back to the consumption of the beverage made of corn, called chicha, and the places in the outskirts of the city where it was drank, back in the sixteenth century. It is in the nineteenth century that dishes were added to the menu and this is how these spaces began to be part of the social and gastronomic

In 2014, the picanterías arequipeñas were declared National Cultural Heritage, thus welcoming the pleasure and art of typical dishes like the rocoto relleno, ocopa arequipeña, and its classic chupe de camarones, to name just a few. Another tradition of Arequipa that has become an important industry relates to textiles. Arequipa is the national source of the development of alpaca and vicuña cotton and fiber, and wool production. The textile sector is one of Arequipa’s most important economic activities, not only for emblematic companies—such as Grupo Inca and Michell & Cía—but also for thousands of formalized micro and small enterprises that manufacture garments and supplies with the camelid fiber. OTHER ROUTES Arequipa can also be the starting point for a series of routes and adventures. There is the Colca Valley, of course, but also other options such as the less known—but equally intriguing—Valley of the Volcanoes, six hours from the city. There is also the Sillar Route, in the district of Cerro Colorado: a route in which in addition to observing the beautiful natural landscapes of the outskirts of Arequipa, you can see the extraction, shaping, and mega-carving process of sillar. Finally, there is the possibility of visiting the sunny countryside of Arequipa to enjoy the green landscape from the Sachaca and Carmen Alto viewpoints. A different scenery of the city, but always majestic. OTRAS RUTAS Arequipa también puede ser el punto de partida para una serie de rutas y aventuras. Está el Valle del Colca, por supuesto, pero también otras opciones como el menos conocido –pero igualmente intrigante- Valle de los Volcanes, a seis horas de la ciudad. Finalmente, está la posibilidad de una visita a la soleada campiña arequipeña y disfrutar del paisaje verde desde los miradores de Sachaca y Carmen Alto. En 1983, José Ramenghi llegó Lima en busca de nuevas oportunidades. Si bien de muy joven en su natal Uruguay había ayudado en la cocina de algún restaurante del barrio donde vivía, el verdadero descubrimiento culinario fue dándose en Perú de a pocos “y en la cancha”, trabajando en distintos restaurantes y conociendo aquellos detalles del mundo de la gastronomía que solamente pueden aprenderse en el quehacer del día a día. Esto le permitió recorrer distintas cocinas y salones, probar sabores y formas de hacer. Sin embargo, su paso por el clásico de San Isidro, La Carreta, le hizo conectarse con sus raíces y con la cultura parrillera de su Uruguay. Tras trece años como empleado en el restaurante de carnes, aprendiendo del negocio, se atrevió a dar el siguiente paso: con-

A escasos treinta minutos caminando desde el centro histórico de Cusco se encuentra el Parque Arqueológico de Sacsayhuaman, una de las más impresionantes fortalezas ceremoniales Incas. El complejo arqueológico se encuentra incrustado en los cerros de piedra que rodean la cuidad, y en las paredes de estas piedras se encuentran algunas de las mejores rutas de escalada. A este sector los escaladores le llaman “Vallecito”, pues se encuentra justo en el pequeño valle donde está la fortaleza. Llaullipata, muy cerca del Templo de la Luna, es otro ejemplo de destino para escalar: es uno de los centros poblados que colindan con la ciudad. Sus paredes de piedra son ideales para la escalada en roca y, sin embargo, son tan solo unos pocos los que disfrutan de trepar las paredes de sus cerros ya que muy pocos lo saben. Just thirty minutes away from the historic center of Cusco is the Archaeological Park of Sacsayhuaman, one of the most impressive Inca ceremonial fortresses. The archaeological complex is embedded in the stone hills surrounding the city, and some of the best climbing routes are on the walls of these stones. Climbers call this sector “Vallecito”, because it is right in the small valley where the fortress is. Llaullipata, very close to the Temple of the Moon, is another example of a destination for climbing: it is one of the populated areas that are adjacent to the city. Its stone walls are ideal for rock climbing and, yet, only a few enjoy climbing the walls of their hills since very few know about it.

En el Valle Sagrado, a tan solo noventa minutos de la ciudad en auto, existen más lugares de primer nivel para la práctica de este deporte: quizás los más conocidos sean Pachar y las paredes de Lamay. Hacia el sur de la ciudad, cerca del nevado Ausangate, se encuentra el que para muchos es uno de los mejores y más difíciles lugares para la escalada en roca en el Perú: Pitumarca, donde se encuentra la famosa Montaña de los siete colores. Este lugar llega a un nivel de dificultad alto, con paredes de trescientos metros de altura que están reservadas únicamente para los más avezados escaladores del mundo.

Todo descubrimiento implica retos: en este caso, bajos grados de temperatura, la diferencia en la lengua, un celular inservible y solo un mapa en la mano. En sus fotos quedan su versión de la cultura, las personas y las ciudades. En su mente reflexiones sobre sistemas de transporte, conciencia ecológica y formas de vida que implican cuestionar la propia. Y eso también lo logra la imagen.

La Reserva Nacional Pacaya Samiria, en Loreto, es una de las Áreas Naturales Protegidas más emblemáticas de nuestro país, reconocida a nivel mundial por sus paisajes impresionantes y por su gran diversidad de especies de animales y vegetación. Sin embargo, existen otros motivos que hacen de este un lugar que vale la pena conocer y un destino imprescindible en la Amazonía peruana. Se trata de su rol como despensa alimentaria regional y su aporte a la economía de las poblaciones que viven a su alrededor, lo que sin duda la convierte en uno de los mejores ejemplos de lo que se conoce como conservación productiva.

Amaneció ya fuera del bosque, sin embargo la penumbra aún nos acoge bajo el enmarañado techo verde de las copas de los árboles, hábitat de una biodiversidad infinita. A una distancia prudente, un pequeño refugio con instalaciones de cámaras de video nos transporta a los cuarenta metros de altura en la copa de un gigantesco shihuahuaco (Dipteryx micrantha ), árbol madre para las comunidades amazónicas y especie emergente que brinda hogar a una familia de águilas arpía, la rapaz más poderosa del mundo y tope en la cadena alimenticia de la Amazonía. Wired Amazon es una iniciativa de Rainforest Expeditions, pioneros haciendo ciencia y ecoturismo en la Amazonía peruana sur, quienes han instalado la primera cámara de video a distancia investigando sin perturbar la biología de esta magnífica y esquiva ave, poco estudiada pese a su gran tamaño. Está en grave peligro por estar íntimamente relacionada con el árbol que le da hogar y que, a su vez, se encuentra gravemente amenazado por la tala ilegal selectiva que desploma en pocas horas shihuahuacos de cientos y hasta miles de años de edad. Muchos de ellos ya eran imponentes torres a la llegada de los españoles durante la conquista. El águila arpía está catalogada como “Casi Amenazada” en la lista roja de especies en peligro de extinción por la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza.

At a safe distance, a small shelter with video camera installation takes us forty meters at the treetop of a gigantic shihuahuaco (Dipteryx micrantha ), the mother tree for the Amazonian communities and an emergent species that gives home to a family of harpy eagles, the most powerful bird of prey in the world and top in the food chain of the Amazon. Wired Amazon is an initiative of Rainforest Expeditions, pioneers in science and ecotourism in the southern Peruvian Amazon, which has installed the first remote video camera, for research purposes, without disturbing the biology of this magnificent and elusive bird, understudied despite its large size. It is in great danger because it is intimately related to the tree that gives it home and which, in turn, is seriously threatened by the selective illegal logging that collapses shihuahuaco trees of hundreds and even thousands of years of age in a few hours. Many of them were already imposing towers at the arrival of the Spaniards during the conquest. The harpy eagle is listed as “Near Threatened” on the red list of endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

A casi seis horas de la ciudad de Lima, en la sierra del departamento, está Laraos, un pequeño pueblo que ofrece a sus visitantes una estadía que combina autenticidad con comodidad. Nearly six hours from Lima, in the mountains of the department, is Laraos, a small town that offers its visitors a stay that combines authenticity with comfort. A casi seis horas de la ciudad de Lima se encuentra Nor Yauyos Cochas, una de las dos Reservas Paisajísticas reconocidas por el Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas de Perú. Dentro de esta reserva está Laraos, un pequeño pueblo de no más de trescientos habitantes. No es un pueblo cualquiera: este lugar en las alturas del departamento de Lima ha visto triunfar a su gente desde hace muchos años. En la actualidad, Laraos es considerado uno de los emprendimientos de turismo rural comunitario más exitosos a nivel nacional, y es visitado cada vez con más frecuencia por turistas nacionales e internacionales. Tan solo el camino a Laraos es un espectáculo para los visitantes. Estos son recibidos por la mejor vista a un sistema de andenes Nearly six hours from Lima is Nor Yauyos Cochas, one of the two Landscape Reserves recognized by the National Service of Natural Protected Areas of Peru. Within this reserve is Laraos, a small town of no more than three hundred inhabitants. It is not just any town: this place in the heights of the department of Lima has seen its people succeed for many years. Currently, Laraos is considered one of the most successful rural community tourism ventures nationwide, and is visited more and more frequently by national and international tourists. The road alone to Laraos is spectacular for visitors. Upon arriving, they have the best view to a system of pre-Inca terraces that have a variation of more than a thousand meters between terraces and which form a unique landscape of different shades of green. The farmers of Laraos, the larahuinos, still use this system to grow products like potatoes, oca, fava beans, and ollucos. Agriculture is one of their main economic activity. However, since foreigners have been coming to the town for the last nine years, the inhabitants improved their lodges, restaurants, and other services little by little, with the aim of offering their visitors an unforgettable experience.

Los agricultores larahuinos siguen usado este sistema para cultivar productos como papas, ocas, habas y ollucos. A pesar de que la agricultura es una de sus actividades económicas principales, desde hace nueve años empezaron a llegar foráneos al pueblo y poco a poco los habitantes fueron mejorando sus casas de hospedaje, restaurantes y otros servicios, con el objetivo de que sus visitantes tengan una experiencia inolvidable. Todo el que llega a Laraos es invitado a ponerse la vestimenta típica y acompañar a los locales a sembrar y cosechar con la chaquitaclla, un arado de mano heredado del mundo ancestral andino. Se participa en un pago u ofrenda a la tierra, se prepara una tradicional pachamanca y, finalmente, se disfruta de la deliciosa comida, todo de la mano de los anfitriones y tal como lo harían los propios larahuinos en un día de celebración. Para Iñigo Maneiro, Coordinador Nacional de la Estrategia de Turismo Rural Comunitario del MINCETUR, la clave del éxito en la actividad turística en Laraos radica en la combinación de maravillosos recursos naturales y culturales y una buena organización comunitaria, con líderes enfocados en dar un buen servicio. Y es verdad que el pueblo de Laraos espera con los brazos abiertos a todo aquel que quiera experimentar sus costumbres y el alma de su día a día.
