No tiene mayor relevancia decir que el Perú es único. Finalmente, cada pedazo de este mundo lo es, y a ojos del viajero curioso no hay paradero insípido. Lo que sí es una suerte, una fortuna invalorable, es poder decir que el Perú es verdaderamente inagotable. Este país está hecho para recorrerse sin pretender nunca conocerlo por completo. Peruvian Magazine toma esa actitud como bandera: pensamos que nuestra esencia está en la diversidad, y nuestras páginas intentan reflejarlo.

It’s irrelevant to say that Peru is unique. Since eventually, so it is every piece of land in this world, and for an attentive and curious traveler there is no tasteless location. What is luck, a priceless fortune, is to be able to say that Peru is truly inexhaustible. This country is to be visited without pretending to ever truly know its vastness. Peruvian Magazine adopts this point of view: we think that our essence should be found in diversity, and our pages intend to reflect this.

Esta primera edición de nuestra revista viaja por una porción pequeña, aunque selecta, de la tierra peruana. Nos sumergimos en el recientemente creado parque nacional Sierra del Divisor para entender porqué es necesario protegerlo, peregrinamos hacia el Apu Ausangate de la mano de sus protectores, visitamos el criollo distrito de Pueblo Libre y exploramos tres recorridos en la paradisíaca costa norte.

This first edition of our magazine travels through a small, but selected portion, of the Peruvian land. We immerse ourselves into the newly created Sierra del Divisor National Park to understand why it is necessary to protect it, we march towards the Apu Ausangate at the hands of their guards, and we visited the creole district of Pueblo Libre and explored three destinations in the paradisiacal northern coast.

El viaje recién empieza, habrá tiempo para nuevas rutas. Mientras tanto, hacemos más que viajar: queremos compartir contigo la sensación del aventurero, ese estado de ánimo que supera el vuelo y se instala en el día a día, mientras planeas tu próxima escapada. ¿Qué libros alimentarían tu viaje? ¿Qué utensilios lo simplificarían? ¿Qué cuidados implica cada temporada? Intentaremos ser útiles edición a edición, pero, principalmente, intentaremos enviciarte con el movimiento, la más hermosa de las adicciones. Hagamos un experimento: cojamos papel y lápiz y escribamos cinco destinos pendientes en el interior del país. ¿Ya? ¿Cuánto tiempo nos tomó? ¿Veinte segundos? Ya lo hemos dicho, el Perú es inagotable. Leamos nuevamente esos cinco nombres en nuestra lista y subrayemos uno, ese al que la mano más fácilmente se acerca. Listo, ahora sabemos que tenemos una deuda pendiente con nosotros mismos. Abramos un paréntesis a su lado y pongámosle una fecha. La decisión es nuestra.

The journey is just starting, there’ll time for new routes. Meanwhile, we don’t just merely travel: we want to share with you the adventurer’s feeling, that mindset that overcomes the flight and takes up position in the day-to-day, while you plan your next getaway. What books would nourish your trip? What tools would simplify it? What personal care is implied in each season? We will try to be helpful with each new edition, but mainly, we’ll attempt you to be obsessed with motion, the most beautiful of addictions. Let’s do an experiment: take pen and paper and write down five outstanding destinations inside the country. Ready? How long did it take? Twenty seconds? We have already said it, Peru is inexhaustible. Then, read once again those five names on your list and highlight one, that one that you have at hand. Done! Now you know that you owe yourself one. So, insert an open parenthesis next to it and put a date. The decision is up to you.

Ha trabajado para grandes agencias internacionales, publicando también en medios digitales y libros de fotografía. Born in Lima, but he alternates residence between Peru and Spain. He studied Photojournalism in Madrid and is just entering into the world of reportaging, with a special focus on Documentary Photography and Photojournalism. He has worked for large international agencies, but also has been publishing in digital media and photography books.

évelyn merino reyna Ingresó a la fotografía el 2004, después de cursar estudios de pintura y arquitectura. Desde hace una década se especializa en fotografía aérea, registrando distintos espacios del Perú desde helicópteros, ultraligeros, avionetas y parapentes. En 2014 editó el libro Lima más arriba, entre los andes y el mar. In 2004 she started with photography, after having studied Painting and Architecture. For at least a decade she has specialized in aerial photography, recording different Peruvian landscapes from helicopters, ultralights, light aircrafts and gliders. In 2014 she published the book Lima más arriba, entre los andes y el mar.

gustavo vivanco Arquitecto egresado de la Universidad Nacional San Antonio Abad del Cusco, además de músico y fotógrafo autodidacta. Se dedica a la fotografía artística, documental, de retratos y de arquitectura. Pertenece el colectivo de arte cusqueño Proyecto 3399.

maría elena carbajal Periodista. Creció en Máncora, en pleno contacto con la naturaleza. Ahora vive en Lima, pero es una viajera constante. Recorre el Perú tratando temas ambientales y sociales, como parte del equipo de Conservamos por Naturaleza y Mil Marcas por el Reciclaje. Sueña con volver a vivir en la playa.

omo ha sucedido durante los últimos cuatro milenios, una escena se repite en la noche amazónica. Reunidos bajo la tutela de un curandero, un grupo de personas bebe la ayahuasca para conectarse con su identidad más profunda, indagando en esos espacios que escapan a la conciencia.

Gathered under the guidance of a healer, a group of people is drinking ayahuasca aiming to connect themselves with their deepest identity, delving into those spaces beyond consciousness.

Los asistentes se han sometido por días a una dieta especial y, llegada la ceremonia, sus organismos están libres de todo líquido o alimento. Guiándolos en el camino adecuado está el chamán. Su principal herramienta son sus ícaros, cantos que aprendió de la naturaleza, muchas veces en sueños o visiones, o que heredó de su propio maestro. Sus letras son simples y no se circunscriben a una lengua en específico. De hecho, muchos de estos cánticos están escritos, además de en lenguas indígenas, en castellano. La importancia principal del ícaro radica en su melodía, un vehículo que carga energéticamente las bebidas –mezcla de la liana ayahuasca con el arbusto chacruna–, previo a su ingesta. Los cantos acompañan al viajero como un padre a un hijo. Mientras el cuerpo se prepara para sumergirse en los efectos de la ayahuasca, el chamán canta pidiendo protección a los espíritus de la selva. Y cuando el viaje se inicia, despegando de la racionalidad, será la sabiduría del chamán la que le permitirá interpretar el ícaro adecuado para las necesidades de cada paciente. Los ícaros son al chamán lo que la medicina al doctor occidental. Un arma sanadora. Su uso en la amazonía traspasa el de las sesiones de ayahuasca: por milenios han sido el tratamiento natural contra cólicos, nervios, sustos y hasta mordeduras de serpientes e infecciones parasitarias como la miasis, causada por larvas de mosca. Mientras cada vez con mayor frecuencia especialistas formados en ciencia occidental se interesan en sus resultados, sin poder sustentar sus causas, los ícaros se mantienen como una realidad en la medicina selvática, especialmente en las sesiones de la ayahuasca, reconocidas por el Estado peruano como “uno de los pilares básicos de la identidad de los pueblos amazónicos”. El respeto por esta bebida, declarada en 2008 Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación, es el requisito esencial para participar del rito que significa su toma. A los viajeros es necesario recordarles que la ceremonia no es bajo ningún término recreativa, en el sentido de las drogas occidentales: por cuatro horas se enfrenta el pasado, el futuro y la misma naturaleza, en un encuentro que puede ser de plena felicidad o de duras pruebas, aunque siempre revelador. Una enseñanza sobrevive para siempre.

For days the participants have been subjected to a special diet and when the ceremony is about to start, their bodies are free of liquids or food. The shaman is right there to guide them through the right way. His main tool is his icaros, songs that he learned from nature, sometimes in dreams or visions, or that he inherited from his own master. Its lyrics are simple and not limited to a specific language. In fact, many of these songs are written, in addition to indigenous languages, in Spanish. Icaros main importance lies in its melody, it’s a conduit that enhances drinks to be energetically loaded - blend of ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis caapi) vines with chacruna shrub - prior to their intake. Chants escort the traveler as a father to a son. As the body gets ready to plunge into the effects of ayahuasca, the shaman sings begging for the forest spirits protection. And when the journey starts, taking off from rationality, it will be the shaman’s wisdom which will allow him to sing the icaro suitable for the needs of each patient. Icaros are for the shaman what medicines represent to the Western doctor. It’s a healing tool. Its use in the Amazon goes far beyond that of the ayahuasca sessions: for millennia it has been the natural healing for cramps, nerves, and scares, and even snakes bites and parasitic infections as Myiasis caused the screwworm fly. While more and more frequently trained in Western science specialists are interested in its results, without been able to elucidate its fundamentals, icaros stands as a reality in the Amazonian medicine, especially in ayahuasca sessions, recognized by the Peruvian Government as “one of the basic pillars of the Amazonian peoples identity”. Respect for this beverage, declared in 2008, Cultural Heritage of the Nation, is the essential requirement to take part in the ritual which implies its intake. It is important to remind all travelers that this ceremony is not under any term recreational, in the sense of Western drugs: in four hours you are faced with the past, the future and nature itself, in an encounter that can be sheer bliss or hard trials, but always enlightening. A teaching survives forever.

Despite the fact that a few years ago she started with stand up paddle, she achieved the Bolivarian Games championships title in the category. Now, she and her paddle are inseparable.

Como uno de los alimentos más ricos en betacaroteno, este tubérculo nos ayuda a mantener nuestra piel bronceada. La palta, por su lado, es una excelente aliada para los días de erisipela. Aplicada con aceite de oliva sobre la piel, calma la sensación de dolor y permite una sensación de descanso tras la insolación.

Difícil imaginar una unión más contra natura. No hay en toda Gran Bretaña un solo desierto ni en toda la costa peruana otro pueblo de inspiración anglosajona. La génesis de esta amalgama se remonta al inicio del siglo XX, cuando la empresa Lobitos Oilfield Limited llegó a este rincón piurano para explotar el petróleo de su subsuelo. Como suele suceder en la tradición inglesa –incluso desde sus primeras conquistas coloniales– los extranjeros llegaron acompañados de su familia e hijos, formando en Lobitos un verdadero campamento británico. A lo largo de sus cerca de doscientos kilómetros cuadrados se fundaron once barrios, muchos de ellos reducidos hoy a escombros. Únicamente tres de ellos conservan visibles estructuras de su origen: los barrios Centro, Primavera y Bellavista. En la primera mitad del siglo pasado, sin embargo, Lobitos fue un lunar urbano en la árida costa norte. Se dice que en este distrito se instaló el primer cine de Sudamérica y existían además oficinas administrativas, almacenes, factorías, un mercado, un colegio y una glorieta. La iglesia, encargada en ese entonces a la congregación del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, sobrevive al extremo de una plaza central en ruinas, sin que su belleza se manche. Emplazada a orillas de un cerro, destaca por su arquitectura neogótica de bóvedas de crucería y arco apuntado. En su máximo esplendor el campamento petrolero contó hasta con seis mil habitantes y en sus calles se respiraba prosperidad. Una planta desalinizadora trataba el agua marina y, donde siempre hubo desierto, podía verse incluso cuidados jardines. El mejor reflejo de su pasado puede encontrarse en su barrio Centro, donde una fila de casas de pino oregon ha sido restaurada principalmente por tablistas sedientos por las perfectas olas de Lobitos. Britain a single desert or another town of Anglo-Saxon inspiration along the Peruvian coast. The genesis of this amalgamation dates back to the beginning of the XX century, when the Lobitos Oilfields Limited Company arrived at this corner of Piura to exploit its underground oil. As is often the case in the English tradition - even from their first colonial conquests – when foreigners arrived they were accompanied by members of their families, and so they established a real British camp in Lobitos. Eleven districts were founded throughout it’s nearly two hundred square kilometers, and now most of them have been wiped out. Only three of them preserve visible structures of its origin: the Centro, Primavera and Bellavista quarters. In the first half of the last century, however, Lobitos was more like an urban oddity in the arid northern coast. It is said that the first cinema in South America was installed in this district; there were also administrative offices, warehouses, factories, a market, a school and a roundabout. The church, in the hands of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in those days, survives at the end of a town square in ruins, keeping its beauty untouched. Nestled on the lower slopes of a hill, it’s remarkable for its neo-Gothic architecture of ribbed vaults and pointed arch vaults. At the time of maximum splendor the oil camp had up to six thousand inhabitants and the atmosphere of prosperity was present in its streets. From the sea waters a desalination plant provided fresh water, and where there was merely wilderness, you could even see well-kept gardens. The best reflection of its past can be found in the Centro quarter, where a row of houses in Oregon pine has been mostly restored by surfers seeking the perfect waves of Lobitos. Plaza Bolívar Esta histórica plaza, centro de operaciones de los libertadores durante la independencia, es el punto de partida en el recorrido distrital. Frente a ella se ubica la Quinta de los Libertadores, donde vivieron José de San Martín y Simón Bolívar, y a pocos pasos nace el Boulevard del Criollismo, donde las estrellas de la música criolla estamparon sus huellas para el recuerdo. Además, alberga con frecuencia festivales culturales y gastronómicos.

Antigua Taberna Queirolo Fundada en 1880, esta taberna es un viaje en el tiempo, y el mejor ejemplo de lo que la tradición significa en Pueblo Libre. En sus salones aún se respira la atmósfera de fines del siglo XIX. En sus mesas, amantes del criollismo se reúnen en largas tertulias acompañadas de chilcanos de pisco, la especialidad de la casa, y tradicionales platos como el Cau cau o el Caldo de choros.

Museo Larco Esta mansión virreinal rodeada de jardines alberga una colección de 50 mil piezas de cerámica, joyería y textilería, en un viaje por cinco mil años de historia prehispánica. Ofrece dos recorridos: Obras maestras del arte precolombino y El antiguo Perú a través de la colección del Museo Larco. Su depósito es uno de los pocos en el mundo abierto al público, y cobija más de 45 mil piezas arqueológicas clasificadas.

Plaza Bolivar This historic Square, headquarters of the liberators during the Peruvian independence is the starting point of the tour district. The “Quinta de los Libertadores” is located in front of the square, an old colonial house where Jose de San Martin and Simon Bolivar stayed, and just a few steps from there emerges the “Boulevard del Criollismo”, where creole music stars stamped their footprints to remember. It also houses regular cultural and gastronomic festivals.

Old Tavern Queirolo Founded in 1880, this tavern is a journey in time, and the best example of what tradition represents in Pueblo Libre. The environment still breathes the late XIX century’s atmosphere and their tables gather creole music lovers who hold long talks drinking a Chilcano de Pisco (a drink made with pisco, lime, and ginger) their specialty, or having traditional dishes such as Cau Cau (tripe, coriander and mint stew) or the broth of mussels.

Museum Larco This vice-royal building surrounded by gardens houses a 50 thousand pieces of pottery, jewelry and textiles, an overview of 5000 years of pre-Hispanic history. It offers two tours: masterpieces of the pre-Columbian art and the ancient Peru art through the Larco Museum Collection. Its Storage is one of the few in the world that is open to the visitors, and exhibits more than 45 thousand of classified archaeological objects.

Empecé con un amigo, cuatro mil dólares y mucho sueños”, recuerda Alejandro Sayán, gerente general de Dunkelvolk, sobre el lejano 1996 en que la marca de ropa nació apoderándose del mercado del downhill y patinaje, por entonces una fiebre en Lima. En su cabeza, sin embargo, le gusta pensar que existen recién desde el año 2008, cuando decidió asumir una nueva estrategia corporativa que llevó a la marca a un crecimiento exponencial. “Los anteriores –sostiene Sayán– fueron años de aprendizaje”. Después de muchas temporadas de una presencia pequeña aunque constante en el país, durante los últimos seis años las ventas se han elevado hasta facturar más de 50 millones de soles en 2015.

“I started with a friend, four thousand dollars and many dreams,” recalls Alejandro Sayan, general manager of Dunkelvolk, making reference to 1996 when the clothing brand was born and took over the downhill and roller skating market, then very popular in Lima. But in his mind, he prefers to think that they have just started in 2008, when he decided to introduce a new corporate strategy that led the brand to grow exponentially. “The previous years - says Sayan - were years of learning”. After many seasons with a small but constant presence in the country, over the last six years the brand has grown to more than 50 million soles in sales in 2015.

En efecto, Dunkelvolk ha logrado consolidarse en el mercado nacional, donde se planea alcanzar en los próximos tres años las 60 tiendas –30 de hombres y 30 de mujeres–y ha dejado de ver a nuestro país como su techo. Ya cuenta con 24 tiendas entre Argentina y China, pero la verdadera expansión de la marca está por comenzar. En alianza con el Grupo Nexo Franquicia –a cargo también de firmas como Alianza Lima, Wendy’s, BTH Hotel o Subway– se ha elaborado un plan estratégico que comenzará a dar frutos en los primeros meses de 2016. Durante el primer semestre el enfoque estará en Latinoamérica, donde manejan la opción de ingresar a Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, Ecuador, Panamá, Costa Rica y Bolivia. Para 2021, cuando la marca cumpla 25 años, planean tener no menos de ochenta tiendas alrededor del globo, y decenas de artistas y atletas dando la cara por la marca en los más importantes espacios. Su versatilidad es otra de sus ventajas: Dunkelvolk ha conseguido identificarse no con un deporte sino con una actitud, la felicidad. Sus representantes son una muestra de ello. “En nuestro equipo de embajadores solo entra gente feliz. Eso se nota en el ambiente y nos hace diferentes”, asegura el gerente general.

U n techo iluminado por botellas recicladas. Unas pocas mesas pequeñas y un largo mesón común. Banquitos con respaldar. Un piso de cemento pulido y fotografías de Lima desde el aire adornando las paredes. A primera vista podría decirse que Cosme es un espacio que escapa a lo pretensioso, pero estaría obviándose a su protagonista principal: la comida. El cuidado de cada plato es digno de cinco tenedores, aunque, para favor de sus comensales, a un precio relativamente cómodo. Después de pasar por la cocina de restaurantes de la talla de Agli Amici, Arzak o El Celler de Can Roca, y después de desempeñarse como chef del Hotel Sonesta El Olivar, de La Ladrillera o de Las Casitas del Colca, James Berckemeyer ha dado una vuelta de timón en su ascendente carrera para presentar un restaurante cálidamente informal y con una carta “honesta, saludable y casera”, en sus propias palabras. El concepto tiene un nombre: comfort food. Comida casera con un alto nivel técnico. La comida de mamá, mejorada. Ahí están el pulpo sellado con quinua al pesto, sal de aceitunas y crema de palta; la costilla de ternera con huevo pochado, jamón serrano y estofado de lentejas bb; el arroz cosme con panceta trozada, pimientos asados, frijol canario, hilo de plátano y huevo. Una pequeña carta de 27 platos trabajados hasta alcanzar su plenitud. Es decir, hasta lograr que Berckemeyer se sienta absolutamente cómodo con ellos. “Sé que un plato ya está listo cuando puedo decirle al cliente ‘pruébalo, está increíble’”, comenta. Y lo ha hecho más de una vez. La molleja, no siempre querida por paladares

At first glance it could be said that Cosme is a spot that disregards pretentiousness, but it would be ignoring its main protagonist: food. The care in each dish is worthy of five forks, though, for the guests, at very reasonable prices. After passing through the kitchens of high stature restaurants such as Agli Amici, Arzak or El Celler de Can Roca, and working as chef of Hotel Sonesta El Olivar, La Ladrillera or Las Casitas del Colca, James Berckemeyer, has made a sharp turn in his ascending career to bring a warmly informal restaurant with a menu that in his own words describes as “honest, healthy, and homemade”. The concept has a name: comfort food. Home-cooked meals with high technical standards. It is Mom’s enhanced food. There you can find the seared octopus and quinoa with pesto, olives salt and avocado cream; baby beef ribs with poached eggs, serrano ham and lentil stew; Cosme’s Rice with sliced pancetta, sweet roasted red peppers, canary beans, plantain and egg. It’s a small menu, with 27 dishes which have been worked until reaching their fullness. That means to reach the point when Berckemeyer feels quite comfortable with them. “I know that a dish is ready when I can tell a guest “try it, it’s amazing,” he says. exigentes, es un ejemplo concreto. Una mesa de cinco personas la pidió por estricta recomendación del chef. Les hizo una promesa: si no les gustaba, él mismo pagaba la cuenta. La mesa repitió el plato. “Tienes que estar seguro de lo que vendes”, explica. La de Cosme es una molleja importada, libre de la fibrosidad de la molleja nacional, pero ese no es su único secreto. Es macerada en leche, cocinada a baja temperatura y sellada a la parrilla; se la acompaña con ají amarillo y una reducción de vino tinto. Imperdible. Pero, pese a la exigencia que impone al nivel de cada plato, Berckemeyer no olvida el placer de la experimentación culinaria. Y Cosme es el lugar preciso para retomar el juego de la cocina. Por primera vez en su carrera se permite atender pedidos ajenos a la carta, o se anima a preparar espontáneamente el plato con el que despertó en la cabeza. Cosme nació con la idea de romper la rigidez de la alta cocina, y lo está logrando. A poco de cumplir un año abierto, su chef solo tiene una palabra para describir su momento: “felicidad”. Cosme’s gizzard is imported, fibrous-free compared to the national gizzard, but that isn’t his sole secret. It is marinated in milk, cooked at low temperature and seared in the grill; with peruvian yellow chili and a red-wine reduction. Not to be missed. But, despite the requirements that he imposes at the level of every cooking, Berckemeyer doesn’t forget the pleasure of culinary experimentation. And Cosme is the right place to resume the game-changing dish. For the first time in his career, he allows himself to meet orders that aren’t listed in the menu, or is encouraged to prepare spontaneously the dish with which he woke up in mind. The customers’ attachment to some of the menu’s options doesn’t inhibit him to play with it –he’s about to replace eleven dishes- on the contrary that challenges him to keep creating. Cosme was conceived with the idea to break the rigidity of haute cuisine, and it’s succeeding. La gerencia extrema En las expediciones de montañismo que desde hace veinte años realiza Perú 8mil, enfrentando los picos más altos y las rutas más riesgosas del mundo, entendimos que cada miembro debe reconocer sus fortalezas y oportunidades de mejora para hacerlas parte del equipo. Así, analizando qué se hace bien y qué no, la expedición forma estrategias para lograr objetivos motivadores y complejos. El montañismo, como muchos retos en la vida, es un trabajo en equipo. Conocedores del poder de las vivencias en aventura y de cómo estas llevan a un grupo a convertirse en un equipo de alto rendimiento, hace quince años decidimos también emprender el reto de generar actividades vivenciales para equipos directivos en organizaciones de toda índole. Es decir, decidimos llevar los aprendizajes del montañismo al mundo empresarial, creando lo que hoy llamamos Gerencia Extrema. El objetivo: lograr en un equipo empresarial una sinergia nueva, llevándolos a cuestionarse su statu quo y, sobre todo, a superar los conflictos unidos. Previo diagnóstico de nuestro equipo, llevamos a los participantes a situaciones reales de una expedición, ya sea en la inhóspita selva peruana o en el desierto de Paracas, amigable pero difícil de sobrellevar. En el camino deben resolverse vicisitudes cotidianas de una expedición: ¿Cuánta agua puedo tomar yo para que el equipo alcance el objetivo? ¿Quién debe cargar más peso? ¿Debemos armar un grupo de avanzada que analice el camino? Los resultados son siempre sorprendentes. En la aventura, cuando uno necesita al otro y comparte con él necesidades básicas, se forja una relación que trasciende los tres días de aventura. De vuelta en el trabajo, el equipo construye soluciones con mayores alternativas, ejecuta acciones con mayor seguridad y resuelve conflictos con mayor simpleza. La razón es sencilla: si racionaron el agua o se cobijaron juntos ante el frío, ¿por qué no podrían tomar decisiones de logística juntos? Y más aún, después de lo vivido, ¿por qué no podrían compartir una visión?

Extreme management During the last twenty years Peru 8mil has been organizing mountaineering expeditions to the highest peaks and the riskier routes in the world, and we learned that each team member must identify their strengths and opportunities for improvement to make them part of the team. Thus, examining what is being done well and what not, the expedition creates strategies to achieve motivating and complex goals. Mountaineering, as with many challenges in life, is teamwork. Aware of the power of adventure experiences and how these make it possible for a group to become a high performance team, fifteen years ago we decided to also undertake the challenge of generating experiential activities for management teams in business organizations of all kinds. We decided to take the lessons learned from mountaineering to the business world, creating what we today call Extreme Management. The objective: to achieve a new synergy in a business team, leading them to ask themselves about their statu quo and, above all, to overcome conflicts united. We take participants, previously evaluated by our team, to real-life expedition situations, whether to the inhospitable Peruvian jungle or to the desert of Paracas, friendly but hard to bear. On the road, daily vicissitudes relevant to an expedition must be settled: How much water can I take for the team to accomplish the goal? Who should carry more weight? Shall we set up an advance party to examine the road? The results are always surprising. On an adventure, when each one needs the other and shares with him the basic needs, a relationship that transcends the three days adventure is forged. So, once back at work, the team develops a number of alternative solutions, implements actions with more conviction and sort out conflicts with greater simplicity. The reason is simple: if they rationalized water usage or took refuge together fleeing from the cold weather, then, why they might not make logistics decisions together? Moreover, after all what they have faced together, why they might not share a common vision?

l tradicional Entierro de la Sardina simboliza la tristeza con que los pueblos de España se despiden de la temporada de carnavales para iniciar la Cuaresma, un tiempo de reflexión y ayuno. La ceremonia parodia un cortejo fúnebre, con deudos entre los que incluso hay algunos hombres disfrazados de viudas. Entre llantos ficticios que acompañan una carroza fúnebre, la sardina llega en un ataúd hacia una hoguera, donde es quemada para júbilo de los asistentes. La cremación simula el nacimiento de una sociedad fortalecida. Esta ceremonia ha sido inmortalizada por el pintor español Francisco de Goya en su óleo El Entierro de la Sardina, que data de entre 1812 y 1819.

i a algún espacio del Perú podría dársele el apelativo de ‘fin del mundo’, Sierra del Divisor estaría en primera fila. De dificilísimo acceso, en el extremo este de Loreto y Ucayali, esta porción de selva de 1 millón 300 mil hectáreas funge de frontera natural con el vecino Brasil y representa uno de los últimos espacios vírgenes de nuestro país. Amenazada largos años por las concesiones mineras y forestales que la rodean, su protección ha sido finalmente asegurada mediante su reciente categorización como Parque Nacional, y se convierte así en la tercera más grande área de este tipo en el Perú.

f any area in Peru could be given the nickname of “the boondocks”, Sierra del Divisor would be in the first line. With very difficult access, located at the East end of Loreto and Ucayali, this piece of forest of 1 million 300 thousand hectares serves as a natural border with the neighboring Brazil and represents one of the last virgin areas of our country. Long years threatened by forestry and mining concessions surrounding it, its protection has finally been guaranteed by means of its recent categorization as National Park, thus becoming the third largest area of its kind in Peru.

Mientras tanto, entre 2009 y 2013, la Fundación Gordon and Betty Moore y la Fundación Pronaturaleza, a la cabeza de este proyecto desde su inicio, se enfocaron en el complejo proceso de la creación de un nuevo expediente y una intensiva campaña de comunicación. Los pobladores de la zona, comprometidos con el apoyo durante el proceso y manifestando su voluntad mediante una exitosa consulta previa, fueron el actor determinante para lograr, en el pasado noviembre, la definitiva creación del Parque Nacional Sierra del Divisor.

Dada su extensión de más de 14 mil kilómetros cuadrados, el mayor tesoro de este parque nacional es su biodiversidad. La variedad de especies de monos es incluso mayor a la del Manu y se ha registrado más de 3 mil especies de plantas distintas. It’s an exceptional mountain range in the national geography, and hides inside more than one secret. “Each of the mountains has particular characteristics that make them unique. The long mission to constitute Sierra del Divisor into a National Park started in 1991, when the legal proposal was made to justify its creation. Then, since 2003, we worked in data gathering so as to assign the area the title of National Reserve, a task that was accomplished in 2006, when Toledo’s administration signed a Supreme Decree establishing its creation, on the very eve of Alan Garcia’s rise to power. However, with the APRA in its second term, the transition to the categorization of National Park had to wait. Meanwhile, between 2009 and 2013, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation together with the Pronaturaleza Foundation, at the head of this project since its inception, focused on the complex process of creating a new record and an intensive communication campaign. The people of the area, committed to support the process and by expressing their will through a previous successful consultation played a crucial role to achieve the final creation of the Sierra del Divisor National Park last November.

La riqueza por descubrir es tal que algunos espacios, lagunas entre ellos, no han sido nunca fotografiados. Las comunidades shipiba (como la de la mujer en la foto), asháninka e isconahua son las que más conocen la zona . Some spaces, i.e. lagoons among them, have been never photographed. The ashaninka, isconahua and shipibo communities (as the one of the woman in the photo), are those who know the area best.

La realidad de esta región poco explorada solo podrá ser conocida mediante investigaciones científicas que, por el momento, son limitadas por lo difícil del acceso y lo alto de sus costos. Hasta el momento, para hacernos una idea, se ha registrado en su territorio, por ejemplo, 3 mil especies de plantas, 570 de aves y 64 de mamíferos (entre ellos 16 de monos, casi la mitad de las especies de monos encontradas en toda la Amazonía). A pesar de esta impactante biodiversidad, Sierra del Divisor es aún considerada una caja de pandora. Una vez alejado el peligro de la depredación minera, forestal o petrolera, esta región mira hacia el futuro con expectativas de convertirse en una zona de investigación y una cautelosa ruta de turismo sostenible, respetando no solo su naturaleza sino a sus pobladores originarios. Este Parque Nacional es la casa de comunidades indígenas entre las que se incluye el pueblo Isconahua, violentamente explotado en el pasado y hoy en aislamiento voluntario. “Desde el boom del caucho estas poblaciones han sido reclutadas como mano de obra y obligadas a prácticas que nunca quisieron realizar. Por estos antecedentes una parte de los isconahua no quiere insertarse a la población, y estamos respetando su libre derecho a mantener su cultura y su forma de vida”, explica Cotrina.

This National Park is home of indigenous communities, included the people of Isconahua, violently abused in the past and nowadays in voluntary isolation. “Since the rubber boom these populations have been recruited as workforce and compelled to practices that they never wish to do. With this background, some of the Isconahua people don’t want to actively participate in society, and we’re respecting their inalienable right in keeping with their culture and lifestyle”, explains Cotrina.

lejado cien kilómetros del Cusco, con una altura de 6,372 m.s.n.m., el Ausangate es para las comunidades que lo rodean una montaña sagrada. Un Apu, una divinidad capaz de dar y quitar vida. Sus aguas, provenientes del deshielo, alumbran al río Vilcanota, irrigando valles y campos en su recorrido, y al evaporarse se elevan retornando al nevado para iniciar un nuevo ciclo de vida. Frente a él, después de tres días de intensa caminata, uno recuerda las más famosas palabras del cubano José Martí: “Hay tres cosas que cada persona debería hacer durante su vida: plantar un árbol, tener un hijo y escribir un libro”. Le faltó una, poeta: recorrer la fabulosa ruta que une la comunidad de Chilca, en Cusco, con la quinta montaña más alta del país.

Los comuneros son nuestros cocineros, nuestros arrieros y, principalmente, nuestros guías en el ande. Tras cinco días de peregrinaje juntos, el vínculo forjado nos acompañará por siempre.

Together with them we are plunged into the civil and religious world of the Andes, an experience that largely exceeds the definition of a ‘hike’. We are invited to meet their day-to-day experiences ranging from the creation of their beautiful looms to the participation in the rituals showing our respect to the Apu: we salute him with a «quintu» (multiple sets of three coca leaves), asking for permission to visit him and protection during the travel. We make a payment to the Earth through the «tinka»; and we thank him with an «apacheta» (small mound of white stones) for allowing us to pass through its domains. The comuneros are our cooks, our carriers and, specially, our guides in the Andean way. After spending five days of pilgrimage together, the link that has been forged among us will accompany us forever.

Es algo que no se entiende hasta que no se es parte de la experiencia. El contraste entre la vida urbana y la vida rural se hace evidente. Este recorrido es un mazazo en nuestra cabeza citadina. La calma que experimentamos en una semana alejados de distracciones mundanas nos permite interiorizar el pensamiento del hombre andino y reflexionar sobre nuestra propia realidad. La serenidad del paisaje, sin embargo, contrasta con la exigencia a la que nos sometemos. Desprendidos por completo de nuestra zona de confort, este viaje es también un reto para nuestros límites físicos. Subir a 5,200 m.s.n.m. no es para cualquiera. Ya a 3,000 m.s.n.m. el cuerpo sufre y la altura amenaza con vencernos, pero motivados por el reto de no ceder y por un grupo humano cada día más cercano, las limitaciones físicas son finalmente superadas. La recompensa a cada metro recorrido: lograr que el hombre que partió del Cusco no sea el mismo que regrese a la ciudad. Parte de uno queda en la montaña, y a cambió un pedazo del Apu vuelve con nosotros, para acompañarnos por el resto de nuestras vidas.

How is it that with so little you can feel so infinitely wealthy? It is something that can’t be understood unless you experience it. The contrast between urban and rural life is evident. This tour is a blow to our monotonous town life. The quiet that we experience in a week away from the worldly distractions allows us to internalize the thinking of the Andean man and reflect on our own reality. The serenity of the landscape, however, contrasts with the stress to which we submit ourselves. Completely detached from our comfort zone, this journey also challenges our physical limits. Climbing to 5,200 meters above sea level is not for everyone. Already at 3,000 masl the body suffers and the height threatens to overpower us, but motivated by the challenge for not to give up and in company of a group of people that gets a little closer each day, the physical limitations are eventually overcome. The reward for each meter: to achieve that the man who departed from Cusco be different to whom returned to the city. Part of oneself stays on the mountains, and in exchange a piece of the Apu is back with us, to accompany us for the rest of our lives.

Located off the coast of Lurin, it features birds such as the Humboldt penguins, Franklin’s gull, Belcher’s gull, grey plovers, pelicans, grayish-black birds, cormorants, as well as mammals such as sea lions, sea otters and dolphins.
