Lo sabe la nación q’ero: abrazados a la provincia de Paucartambo desde tiempos anteriores a la conquista española, los q’ero no imaginan un futuro apocalíptico; su optimismo milenario les da la seguridad de que todo cambio es positivo, pues su transformación acerca a la Tierra al surgimiento de una era dorada. Y eso hay que celebrarlo.
The end of the year, inevitably, brings the future closer. Decisions, opportunities, farewells and beginnings, mingle with the emotions and excitement of the holidays. Although many people walk for many kilometers for the reunion or discovery, the real motion takes place within our heart. The Q’ero nation knows it pretty well: inhabiting the Province of Paucartambo since those far off days before the Spanish conquest took place, the Q’ero do not envisage an apocalyptic future and their millennial optimism gives them every confidence that any change is positive, for its transformation makes the Earth to move closer towards the dawning of a golden era. And this is of course to be welcomed.

ÉVELYN MERINO REYNA Ingresó a la fotografía el 2004, después de cursar estudios de pintura y arquitectura. Desde hace una década se especializa en fotografía aérea, registrando distintos espacios del Perú desde helicópteros, ultraligeros, avionetas y parapentes. En 2014 editó el libro Lima más arriba, entre los andes y el mar. In 2004 she started with photography, after having studied Painting and Architecture. For at least a decade she has specialized in aerial photography, recording different Peruvian landscapes from helicopters, ultralights, light aircrafts and gliders. ANDREA VENEGAS Estudió artes visuales en la Escuela de Arte de Sydney, en Australia, donde vivió durante 13 años. En Sydney ha expuesto dos de sus series: la primera, “Backstage Circus”, el 2007, y la segunda, “FELT”, el 2011. Desde el 2010 vive y trabaja en Perú. She studied Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts, in Australia, where she lived for 13 years. In Sidney, two of her series were displayed: “Backstage Circus” in 2006 and “FELT” in 2011. espués de cientos de años de profundo aislamiento, un milenario pueblo es redescubierto por la civilización, perdido entre los Andes y la jungla, deslumbrando al mundo moderno con costumbres ancestrales y su capacidad de conexión con la naturaleza. Aunque podría tratarse del argumento de una novela, este es más bien un brevísimo resumen de la historia de la nación q’ero, un pueblo anterior a la Conquista que se niega a desaparecer.

fter hundreds of years of deep isolation, civilization has discovered anew a millennial community, lost between the Andes and the jungle, dazzling the modern world with ancient customs and its ability to connect with nature. Although it might be the stuff of science-fiction, this is rather a brief summary of the history of the Q’ero nation, a society of an era preceding the European Conquest, which refuses to disappear.

Estos indicios son interpretados míticamente por los q’ero no como el principio del fin, sino como una invitación a rectificar el rumbo de la especie. Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación desde el año 2007, este macroayllu se desplaza entre los glaciares andinos y los bosques nubosos de la selva alta, moviéndose de los 5,000 a los 2,000 msnm para cultivar maíz y papa, y criar camélidos sudamericanos. Su núcleo se encuentra 200 kilómetros al este de Cusco (la antigua capital del imperio inca), en la provincia de Paucartambo, y está compuesto por unas 2,500 personas, divididas en 5 comunidades y más de 30 anexos de altura. Este pueblo, que se mantuvo aislado por más de 300 años después de la conquista de América, no utiliza dinero de forma cotidiana, sino que recurre al tradicional trueque, y por lo general evita el intercambio con el exterior, existiendo en un estado de autarquía. Tal vez por ello, tras su redescubrimiento en 1922, los q’eros impresionaron a muchos por su similitud con el pasado inca, especialmente a nivel de técnicas constructivas y agrarias, simbología, cosmovisión e idioma (runasimi o quechua). Hoy en día algunos los consideran como el último vestigio del imperio incaico, una teoría que se sigue discutiendo. A diferencia de la mayoría de pueblos, que imaginan un futuro cataclísmico o participan de la lógica del “todo tiempo pasado fue mejor”, los q’ero son un pueblo optimista. De acuerdo a su versión del mito del Inkarri, un gran cambio se avecina, pero no uno apocalíptico, como cabría pensar, sino uno positivo: el surgimiento de una era dorada. Esta transformación, según sus chamanes, ya está en proceso, pues hay señales de que hemos comen-

En días cercanos a fin de año, cuando reseteamos nuestros planes a futuro y hacemos un balance del pasado, acaso resulta pertinente pensar en el pueblo q’ero y mirar hacia el mañana con buenos ojos. De repente sea necesario calibrar el rumbo y transformar el corazón, como ellos sostienen… después de todo, el futuro es ahora.
Cultural Heritage of the Nation since 2007, this macroayllu moves between the Andean glaciers and the cloud forests of the highland jungle, traveling from 5,000 to 2,000 masl to grow corn and potatoes, and raise South American camelids. Its main center is located 200 km east of Cusco (former capital of the Inca Empire), Province of Paucartambo, and consists of roughly 2,500 people, divided in 5 communities and with over 30 annexes in the high-altitude zones. This society, which remained isolated for more than 300 years after the Conquest of America, does not use money on day-to-day basis, but draws on traditional bartering, and usually avoids the exchange with the outside, to exist in a state of autarky. Perhaps that is why, after its discovery anew in 1922, the Q’ero impressed many people for its similarity with the Inca history, particularly at the building and agricultural techniques, symbology, worldview and language (Runasimi or Quechua) levels. Nowadays, some people see them as the last remnant of the Inca Empire, a theory that is still under discussion. Unlike most societies, that envision a cataclysmic future or share the idea that “the past was better”, the Q’ero is an optimistic people. In accordance with his version of the Inkarri myth, a next major change is just around the corner, yet not an apocalyptic one, as we might think, but a positive one: the beginning of a golden age. This transformation, according to their shamans, is under way, because there are signs that we have been turning towards a human period of deeper elevation, such as the disappearance of high-altitude lakes and partial extinction of the condor. These signs are mythically seen by the Q’ero not as the beginning of the end, but as a call to rectify the course of human species. In the days around the year-end, when we reset our plans for the future and review the past, perhaps it is relevant to think of the Q’ero people and adopt a positive outlook for the future. Suddenly it is necessary to calibrate the direction and transform our hearts, as they say... After all, the future is now.

mediados del pasado septiembre llegó a la agencia Mago un correo inesperado. “Felicitaciones, han sido nominados dos veces al Grammy en la categoría Best Recording Package para la banda Bareto y Melnik”, decía. Pensaron que se trataba de una broma o de una típica estafa cibernética. Pero las llamadas y felicitaciones durante las siguientes horas confirmaron la noticia: los álbumes diseñados por Mago participarían en la gala de Las Vegas.

ast mid-September an unexpected email reached Mago Agency. “Congratulations you have been nominated twice for a Grammy as Best Recording Package for the Bareto band and Melnik,” it said. They thought it was a joke or a typical cyber scam. However, calls and congratulations over the next hours confirmed the news: albums designed by Mago would participate in the Las Vegas Gala.

Su parecido con el personaje de la serie animada “Sombrita” le impuso ese apelativo desde pequeño y forma parte también de las iniciales de la agencia, que hace dos meses se ha asociado con Alejandro Agois y Andrea Romero para complementar conocimientos y experiencias.

Fue expuesta en galerías de Lima, y salió de Perú para ser vista en Costa Rica, Canadá y España. “Eso nos genera un networking que no es tan comercial, como sí sucede con los premios, pero que para nosotros es más enriquecedor”, admite Goster, quien aún no sabe qué haría con un Grammy.
Para Goster, los discos de música tienen que ser un fetiche de colección para que el público los busque antes que la versión digital. “Yo soy diseñador gracias a la música”, cuenta. El punk de su adolescencia aún es fuente de inspiración constante, por estar llena de espectacularidad visual: grafitis, fancines, posters, colores, tapas de discos. Al diseñador le gustó tanto la música como lo que había alrededor, y ese fue el punto de partida para ser lo que es hoy: un referente en diseño gráfico (y un gran coleccionista de vinilos).
Jose Antonio Mesones is founder and director of the agency, one of the creators of the nominated covers, yet no one knows him by name. He is Goster. His resemblance to the hero of the cartoon series “Shadow Boy” granted him this nickname since childhood and forms part of the agency initials, which two months ago has partnered with Alejandro Agois and Andrea Romero to complement knowledge and experiences.

For Goster, albums have to be a fetish of collection so that the audience will look for them instead of the digital version. “I’m designer thanks to music”, he says. The punk during his adolescence still serves as a constant source of inspiration because of its visual showiness: graffiti, fanzines,
posters, colors, albums covers. Music delighted him so much as everything in the surroundings, and that was the starting point for what he is today: an icon in the field of graphic design (and a keen vinyl collector). Perhaps Mago’s philosophy is different to that of many other agencies. They are not interested in applying for awards and prefer to invest time and resources in Mago Lab: a creative laboratory where all the agency employees participate to create artworks that no one has ordered. Mago lab latest creation is a series of graphic reflections, made with screen printing, on the impact of technology in today’s world. Art galleries in Lima exhibited it as well as it happened in Costa Rica, Canada and Spain. “That’s a networking not as commercial as with the awards, but that for us is more rewarding,” admits Goster, who still does not know what he would do with a Grammy.

Atardecer en Lobitos, a 18 km al norte de Talara. El balneario es destino popular para el surf, la pesca deportiva y el esquí acuático. Además, su pueblo pescador tiene más de un siglo de historia. ANCHAQUE, LA “SUIZA” DE PIURA De abril a diciembre son los meses ideales para visitar el distrito de Canchaque, provincia de Huancabamba. Conocido como la “Suiza Piurana” por su vegetación, ha sido declarado como Capital Turística de la región. Canchaque se ubica a tres horas en auto desde la ciudad de Piura. Tiene clima templado, una diversidad de plantas y animales que acompañan sus paisajes. Las cataratas de Chorro Blanco son un ejemplo de ello. Se ubican a dos horas de la capital de Canchaque. Se puede ir caminando pero también existe gente que alquila mulas para llegar hasta allí. La catarata mide ciento setenta metros de altura y es posible llegar al centro de la misma para poder bañarse.
ANCHAQUE The ideal months to visit Canchaque district, province of Huancabamba are from April through December. Known as the “Switzerland of Piura” for of its vegetation, it was declared the Region Capital of Tourism. Canchaque is a three-hour drive from the city of Piura, with a temperate climate, and a diversity of plants and animals that go along with its landscapes. Chorro Blanco Falls is one such instance; it is located just over two hours from the capital of Canchaque. You can go by walking but there is also people who rent mules to get there. The waterfall is one hundred and seventy meters in height and you can reach its center to bathe.
Otra opción son los Peroles de Mishuaca. Se trata de enormes “tinas” naturales creadas por la erosión en la roca. Los peroles son tres hondonadas que se superponen: la primera tiene extensión de ocho metros; la segunda es un poco más angosta, pero de mayor profundidad; y la última es la de menor profundidad, ideal para que se puedan bañar los niños. En la zona hay algunas construcciones rústicas para que el turista pase el día y tenga un lugar donde almorzar.
The Peroles de Mishuaca is another option. It comprises three huge natural “tubs” that have been formed by rock erosion. These bowls are overlapping depressions: the first one is eight meters long; the second is a bit narrower, but with higher depth; and the latter is shallow, ideal for children to bathe. In the area, tourist will find some rustic buildings to spend the day and have lunch.

El turismo vivencial siempre completa la aventura. En Canchaque el viajero puede observar el proceso de elaboración del agua ardiente, bebida típica de la zona: el corte de la caña de azúcar, la molienda, la fermentación y la destilación. También conocerá de cerca el proceso de cosecha, tostado y degustación del café, considerado por muchos como uno de los más exquisitos del Perú, al igual que sus platos típicos como el majado de plátano con chicharrón y la sopa de alverja.
Canchaque es conocida como la “Suiza piurana” por su vegetación, y ha sido declarada Capital Turística de la región.
VOLVER AL PASADO Si se trata de conocer la historia de la región, siempre será una buena idea visitar sus sitios arqueológicos. En la provincia de Sechura, por ejemplo, se encuentra el Complejo Arqueológico de Chusis de una antigüedad promedio de diez mil años. Hoy cuenta con un centro de información turística y un museo de sitio, donde los visitantes pueden apreciar los vestigios de treinta y siete tumbas pertenecientes a esta cultura preinca. En la provincia de Piura está la Fortaleza de Narihuala, capital de la cultura pre-inca Tallán que se asentó en esta zona. Cuenta con un museo de sitio donde se puede observar materiales obtenidos de las investigaciones arqueológicas como la ofrenda funeraria del perro sin pelo, textiles, cerámicas, objetos de plata y oro, además de información etnográfica sobre los antiguos pobladores tallanes. Una tercera opción, igual de importante, es visitar el Templo de los Jaguares. Ubicado en la provincia de Huancabamba y descubierto por Mario Polía Meconi, se cree que este templo fue alguna vez un edificio dedicado al culto del dios Jaguar por los huancapampa, lo que hace pensar que los orígenes de esta cultura yacen en la selva amazónica. RETURNING TO THE PAST If you mean to learn about the history of the region, it will always be a good idea to visit its archeological sites. For instance, in Sechura province, you can find the Chusis Archaeological Complex, with average age of ten thousand years. Which now has a tourist information center and a site museum that exhibits the remains of thirty-seven tombs of this pre-Inca culture. In the province of Piura sits the Narihuala Fortress, the capital of the Tallan, a pre-Inca culture, which settled in this area. It has a site museum exhibiting pieces obtained from the archaeological research, such as the hairless dog funerary offerings, textiles, ceramics, silver and gold items, but also ethnographic information about the old Tallan settlers. A third option, just as important, is to visit the Temple of the Jaguars. Located in the province of Huancabamba and discovered by Mario Polia Meconi; it is believed that the Huancapampa people once used this building as a temple for the cult of the Jaguar God, suggesting that the origins of this culture lie in the Amazon jungle.

PIURA NORTH la marea baja. Aunque el espectáculo mayor empieza en octubre: cuando los viajeros pueden avistar delfines y ballenas jorobadas surcando el mar. La playa de Lobitos, con sus majestuosas dunas y noches de luna llena, es uno de los cien lugares con las mejores olas del mundo. Sus tubos y vientos fuertes y parejos, hacen que nueve de cada diez tablistas que visitan el Perú vayan a Lobitos sí o sí. Los Órganos, por su parte, ofrece tres puntos excelentes para coger buenas olas: Casablanca, El Codito y La Vuelta. Para quienes buscan actividades más reposadas, siempre están los paseos al atardecer por el Boulevard Turístico de Los Órganos, un sendero rodeado de pequeñas palmeras y vegetación típica de la zona, a escasos metros de la playa.

CABO BLANCO EXTREMO Este balneario de pescadores merece un párrafo aparte. Además de inspirar a Ernest Hemingway a escribir El viejo y el mar, Cabo Blanco es escenario de récords mundiales de pesca (en sus aguas se pesco el merlín más grande del mundo en 1954). Célebres personajes como Marilyn Monroe, Nelson Rockefeller y Cantinflas se bañaron en sus aguas y frecuentaron el Cabo Blanco Fishing Club, local emblema de la pesca deportiva. El surf en Cabo Blanco también es extremo. Esta localidad –ubicada a la altura del kilómetro 1137 de la Panamericana Norte– cuenta con olas no aptas para principiantes: izquierdas tubulares (reefbreak) de hasta tres metros de altura. Se recomienda desafiarlas entre octubre y enero, cuando el clima mejora. Surfistas de todo el mundo prefieren acampar en la playa en esa época para no perderse las bondades del mar por la madrugada.

While Los Organos offers three spots that are exceptional for catching good waves: Casablanca, El Codito and La Vuelta. For those looking for quieter activities there are always sunset strolls along the tourist boulevard of Los Organos, a trail surrounded by small palm trees and local typical vegetation, just a few meters away from the beach. Esta estructura piramidal de la cultura Ichma (900-1450 d. C.), único resto arqueológico de Magdalena y Patrimonio de la Nación desde 2001, es el antiguo templo de un conjunto huacas hoy inexistente. Fue restaurado y puesto en valor por la Municipalidad en 2006. Sus 11 mil m2 son hoy un eje articulador de la comunidad local, centro de investigaciones arqueológicas y escenario de actividades culturales.
Fue el primer parque construido en el distrito, a finales del siglo XIX. Es una amplia plaza circular ornada por jardines y coronada por una fuente ornamental iluminada, lo que la convierte en uno de los principales puntos de esparcimiento del distrito, lugar de encuentro de parejas y amistades. A pocas cuadras se ubica la hermosa iglesia Sagrado Corazón de María, de estilo renacentista. Un lugar ideal para ver caer la tarde.
La palabra quechua Yuyachkani significa “estoy pensando, estoy recordando”. Da nombre a esta popular compañía de teatro con más de 45 años de trayectoria: sus obras, experimentales y marcadas por un fuerte compromiso social e histórico, se alimentan de los ritos andinos y la herencia teatral universal para meditar sobre el presente desde la memoria colectiva. Su Casa Teatro está ubicado en una casona republicana de inicios de 1900, perfectamente restaurada.

This pyramidal structure of the Ichma culture (900-1450 a. D.), unique archeological rest of Magdalena and Cultural Heritage of the Nation since 2001, is the ancient temple of a set of huacas today non-existent. In 2006, the city hall restored and recognized it. Nowadays, its 11 thousand m2 are pivotal to the local community, the archaeological research center and the setting for cultural activities.
This was the first park built in the district at the end of the nineteenth century. It is a large circular plaza decked with gardens and topped by an ornamental illuminated fountain, making it one of the district’s main points of recreation, meeting place for couples and friends. A few blocks away is the beautiful church of the Sacred Heart of Mary, in Renaissance style. An ideal place to watch the sunset.
Yuyachkani House Theatre (363 Tacna Street) The Quechua word Yuyachkani means, “I’m thinking, I’m remembering”. It gives name to this popular theatre group with over 45 years of professional experience: their works, experimental and marked by a strong social and historical commitment, are inspired in Andean rites and the universal theatrical legacy aiming to think about the present from the collective memory. Their House Theatre is a creative lab located in a Republican style mansion of the early twentieth century, perfectly restored.

mediados de este año, Analí Gómez fue galardonada en el 2016 ISA World Games y obtuvo su cuarto título mundial representando al Perú en torneos profesionales de surf. A su regreso a Lima, Automotores Gildemeister Perú la nombró embajadora de Hyundai, siendo la primera representante de la marca en este deporte. La presentación oficial tuvo lugar en agosto pasado, en un local de la Costa Verde: el piloto Ramón Ferreyros, quien también es parte del team de deportistas de Hyundai, recogió a Analí de su casa en Punta Hermosa para llevarla a la conferencia de prensa. Así, con la necesaria cercanía del mar, se presentó a la campeona como nueva embajadora de la marca, y se le hizo entrega de una camioneta Hyundai Creta totalmente nueva y personalizada para ella. Al igual que los últimos modelos de la marca coreana, Hyundai Creta ha sido diseñado bajo el estilo Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 y entre sus principales características externas destaca una amplia parrilla hexagonal, aros de aleación de 17 pulgadas y luces led de uso diurno. os amigas en una furgoneta, una cámara y la carretera central de Tasmania. En una travesía de cinco días, donde durmieron estacionadas a un lado del camino, la fotógrafa Andrea Venegas capturó el contraste y la monumentalidad de la isla australiana. Partiendo de Hobart, conocieron la intervención del hombre en el Museo de Arte Antiguo y Nuevo, MONA, y en las chacras colindantes, para luego internarse en la cruda naturaleza de los bosques de Craddle Mountain, de la reserva de Liffey Falls y de la Bahía de los Fuegos. In a five days journey, where they slept parked on the side of the road, the photographer Andrea Venegas captured the contrast and the monumentality of the Australian island. From Hobart, they met human intervention at the Museum of Ancient and New Art, MONA, and adjoining farms, before going into the harsh nature of the Craddle Mountain forests, the Liffey Falls State Reserve and the Bay of Fires. Venegas has a visual history, using the human figure to show the scope and the real impact of the Tasmanian landscape.

La cocina nikkei es ejemplo de verdadero mestizaje cultural: no se trata de comida japonesa con ingredientes peruanos, y tampoco es comida peruana reinterpretada con elementos japoneses. “Definir qué es la cocina nikkei es como definirnos a nosotros mismos”, dijo una vez Mitsuharu Tsumura, chef del reconocido Maido. Jorge Matzuda y Masa Hamada lo saben. La posibilidad de exponer las complejidades de su cultura nikkei fue uno de los principales motivos para crear el restaurante Tzuru, hace poco más de año y medio. “No dejamos de ser peruanos y, a la vez, tenemos una cultura que se diferencia hasta en la comida: también hemos crecido comiendo lentejitas y arroz con pollo, pero la sazón de la abuela japonesa no es la misma. La influencia japonesa está en cada aspecto de nuestra vida”, reflexiona Matzuda. La carta de Tzuru quiere reflejar esos sabores y riqueza.
ikkei cuisine exemplifies the real fusion of cultures: this is neither Japanese food prepared with Peruvian ingredients, nor Peruvian food reinterpreted with Japanese elements. “Defining what Nikkei cuisine is similar to define ourselves”, once said Mitsuharu Tsumura, chef at the renowned Maido. Jorge Matzuda and Masa Hamada know it. The possibility of showing their Nikkei culture complexities was one of the main reasons to create Tzuru restaurant, a little over one and a half years ago. “We are just Peruvians and, at the same time, share a culture but there is a still a huge gap even in the food: we have also grown eating duckweeds and green rice and chicken, but the seasoning of the Japanese grandma’s is not the same. The Japanese influence embraces every aspect of our life”, states Matzuda. The menu of Tzuru seeks to reflect those flavors and richness.
Jorge Matzuda ganó una beca para estudiar cocina en Japón. Durante medio año vivió en Kagoshima, la ciudad de sus abuelos. Años más tarde hizo un master de cocina y vinos en Italia, y una pasantía en la Ostería Francescana de Massimo Bottura. En Lima, Matzuda trabajó en Edo, donde conoció a Masa Hamada. Este último también vivió un tiempo en Japón –tres años-, donde trabajó en un restaurante de comida rápida, y al regresar a Perú estuvo en Sushito, antes de llegar a Edo. Tzuru es un espacio muy personal para ambos chefs: el lugar donde pueden volcar su experiencia de vida y sus intereses creativos.
Jorge Matzuda earned a scholarship to study cuisine in Japan. During half a year, he lived in Kagoshima, the city where his grandparents were born. Years later, he became a master of cuisine and wines in Italy, and an internship at the Osteria Francescana of Massimo Bottura. In Lima, Matzuda worked in Edo, where he met Masa Hamada. The latter also lived awhile in Japan - three years-, where he worked in a fast food restaurant, and upon returning to Peru was in Sushito, before arriving to Edo. Tzuru is a very personal space for both chefs: a place where they can tip their life experience and creative interests.

O también el tontoro yakimeshi: una cama de arroz frito, bajo huevos reventados coronados por panceta de cerdo glaseada. “Queremos hacer algo distinto a lo que generalmente se ofrece”, explica Matzuda. Su propuesta también incluye platos japoneses tradicionales -como el yakisoba (tallarines fritos)- a los que no quieren hacer variación. Y ponen un límite a la fusión: “No usamos tacu tacu en vez de arroz en un maki, ni lo rellenamos de seco”, bromea Hamada. Pero sí se permiten explorar con ingredientes peruanos. “En general los platos son
armoniosos, elegantes, bien hechos. Los postres valen la visita por sí mismos”, aseguró en su columna de Caretas la crítica gastronómica Maria Elena Cornejo. La pannacotta de ajonjolí con arenado de avellanas, da fe de ello. Tzuru significa grulla en japonés, y mil grullas de origami adornan el restaurante. Tienen que ver con la costumbre japonesa de pedir un deseo. La grulla también representa prosperidad y larga vida. Pero, además, hacer mil grullas de origami demuestra paciencia, minuciosidad y respeto por el trabajo manual y en equipo. Para Matzuda y Hamada, es lo que Tzuru representa. Their proposal also includes traditional Japanese dishes, which they do not want to change. Moreover, they place a limit to fusion: “We don’t use tacu tacu (fried beans and rice) instead of rice

Todo santuario o reserva natural se crea con una misión específica. El Santuario Nacional Tabaconas Namballe no es la excepción, aunque en su caso la función es mixta y, por ende, más compleja. Por un lado, tiene el objetivo de preservar a la fauna animal de la extinción, y más precisamente a dos especies: el simpático oso de anteojos u oso andino, y el arisco tapir de montaña, del que solo sobreviven 400 ejemplares en Perú. Por otro lado, busca conservar de la depredación algunos hábitats sui generis como el páramo austral de los Andes, ecosistema montano extremadamente húmedo y cubierto por matorrales; y el bosque de neblina, reino verde –y también húmedo– que cobija a las únicas coníferas sudamericanas: las podocarpáceas. Protegido por una geografía accidentada y rodeado de escarpadas cordilleras, este pulmón boscoso de 32,124.87 hectáreas de extensión es una de las joyas ocultas del Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado (SERNANP). Además del oso de anteojos y el tapir, la riqueza natural del santuario es vasta, abarcando hasta el momento 59 especies de mamíferos, 186 de aves (43 endémicas), 13 de anfibios y 5 de reptiles, además de 286 especies de plantas (27 de ellas helechos); es decir, una increíble variedad de flora y fauna que es estudiada minuciosamente desde la Estación Biológica de Chichilapa. En ese aspecto, uno de los aliados de SERNANP en el santuario es WWF-Perú: en el año 2000, financió el primer inventario biológico realizado en el santuario; desde entonces, trabaja con SERNANP en el fortalecimiento de las zonas aledañas, la protección de especies emblemáticas y la recuperación de zonas degradadas.

El trabajo conjunto, que también se incluye a la población local, ha permitido el desarrollo de programas de reforestación y la implementación de sistemas productivos que respetan los ecosistemas del santuario: el café de sombra en la zonas de amortiguamiento fuera del santuario, que no requieren la tala de árboles, es la mejor (y más deliciosa) prueba de ello. Después de casi 30 años existiendo en secreto, hoy en día el santuario andino concita el interés de la comunidad científica internacional por su increíble biodiversidad. La naturaleza siempre encuentra la forma de perpetuarse y deslumbrarnos a través de maravillas como esta: un reino de bosques nubosos que existe para recordarnos que en algunas partes del mundo la vida todavía transcurre como hace millones de años.
I
n the northernmost of Peru, and more precisely in the Department of Cajamarca, lies a beautiful land difficult to reach that has remained almost pristine. In 1988, the Peruvian Government established this area, located between the districts of Tabaconas and Namballe, in the province of San Ignacio, as the Tabaconas Namballe National Sanctuary, a prodigy of nature rarely visited with hundreds of wonders to discover. Every sanctuary or nature reserve is created with a specific mission. The Tabaconas Namballe National Sanctuary is no exception, although in its case, it has a mixed purpose and, therefore, it is more complex. On the one hand, aims to preserve animal wildlife from extinction, and more precisely two species: the cute spectacled bear or Andean

On the other hand, seeks to protect from predation some sui generis habitats such as the Andean southern moor, montane ecosystem extremely wet and covered by bushes; and the mist forest, green realm -and wet- that gives shelter to the sole South American conifers: the Podocarpaceae. Protected by a rugged geography and surrounded by steep mountain ranges, this 32,124.87 hectares wooded lung is one of the hidden gems of the Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado (SERNANP). In addition to the spectacled bear and tapir, the natural wealth of the sanctuary is vast, covering so far 59 mammal species, 186 bird (43 endemic), 13 amphibians and 5 reptiles, as well as 286 species of plants (27 of these are ferns). In other words, an incredible variety of flora and fauna that is thoroughly studied at the Chichilapa Biological Station. In this sense, one of SERNANP’s allies in the sanctuary is WWF-Peru, that financed in 2000, the first biological inventory conducted in the sanctuary. Since then, WWF-Peru works with SERNANP for strengthening the surrounding areas, the protection of flagship species and the recovery of degraded areas. After nearly 30 years in secret, the Andean sanctuary is only recently coming to the attention of the international scientific community for its incredible biodiversity. Nature always finds a way to perpetuate itself and dazzle us with wonders as this one: a realm of cloud forests that exists to remind us that in some parts of the world life still runs as it was millions of years ago.

También se puede ir en transporte particular. Aunque se pueden visitar todo el año, la mejor época para visitar la catarata es entre abril y noviembre, cuando las lluvias son menos copiosas. Para conocerla hay que viajar por carretera desde la ciudad de Pucallpa hasta Aguaytía, capital de la provincia El Padre Abad, en la región Ucayalí. El camino hacía la catarata es una de las mejores partes de la aventura. Como la zona está ubicada en el lado oriental de la Cordillera de los Andes, mejor conocida como “ceja de selva”, la vista parece una postal de cielo azul, nubes como algodones gigantes y montañas cubiertas por ejércitos de árboles. Mientras se viaja a conocer El velo de la novia, entre el camino de Pucallpa a Tingo María, hay otras impresionantes caídas de agua que puedes visitar. El Velo de las Ninfas, por ejemplo: una catarata de aguas cristalinas que recuerdan a la larga cabellera de una mujer. También está la Ducha del Diablo, cuya caída de agua tiene alrededor de setenta metros de altura: dicen que las piedras negras que el agua golpea se asemejan al perfil del demonio.

This legend is usually the first thing that locals tell when a traveler gets to know El Velo de la Novia (The Bridal Veil), one of the most beautiful and visited waterfalls of Peru. To see it you have to travel by road from Pucallpa city to Aguaytia, capital of the El Padre Abad province, in the Ucayali region. The path to the waterfall is one of the best parts of the adventure. As the area is located on the eastern side of the Andes Mountain range, better known as “ceja de selva” (highland jungle), the view seems a postcard of blue sky, clouds as giant cottons and armies of tree-covered mountains. While traveling to meet El Velo de la Novia, on the road from Pucallpa to Tingo Maria, there are other impressive waterfalls, which you can visit. El Velo de las Ninfas (the nymphs’ veil), for example, a waterfall of crystal-clear waters because they evoke the long hair of a woman. There is also, the Ducha Del Diablo (shower of the devil), whose waterfall is about seventy meters height: they say

Al llegar al lugar, luego de tres horas de viaje por carretera, hay que descender varios metros por escalones de tierra y piedra hasta llegar donde termina la caida de agua. Vista desde allí, el paisaje es sobrecogedor. La catarata tiene una altura de más de cincuenta metros. Empieza como un torrente angosto pero que se va ensanchando a medida que llega a la superficie, hasta alcanzar los seis metros de ancho aproximadamente. Su forma asemeja a la de un abanico invertido. O al velo de una novia. La entrada para disfrutar de la catarata cuesta cinco soles. El velo forma parte de un complejo turístico donde cualquier viajero puede disfrutar de restaurantes y terrazas tranquilas donde se puede pasar el día en familia. Dentro del complejo turístico el viajero también puede acampar o dar paseos entre begonias, mangos silvestres y los sonidos de los animales e insectos del monte. Bañarse en la corriente fría de la catarata, por supuesto, es obligatorio. Sus aguas son tan cristalinas que se pueden ver decenas de peces de colores a través de ellas.
