MISSIONS: STORM RELIEF UPDATES In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and the anticipation of damages from Hurricane Irma, many opportunities for service, giving, and response are forming. Rev. Scott Parish, Associate Director of Connectional Ministries Disaster Response Coordinator, has noted that "as the Disaster Response Team coordinates across the Conference and across the connection, two priorities continue to rise to the top: Prayer and UMCOR funding." Donations may be made to UMCOR by making your check payable to Newnan FUMC and designating your offering to go to UMCOR: Disaster Response. 100% of these donations go to relief! Rev. Parish further notes that "communities in the path of Hurricane/ Tropical Storm Harvey are in the emergency phase, and in this phase local emergency responders and community officials control the response and will let us know what they need and when they need us. This will take time to play out, and will require our time and attention long after the fact." Likewise, responses to Hurricane Irma will require time and patience as needs are identified and assessments are made. In the coming weeks and days, please look to The Shepherd, The InBetween, bulletin inserts, the missions bulletin board, and other means of publication for information regarding the collection and donation of supplies for UMCOR Relief Kits (UMCOR.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies). Also, please consider donating items for muck-out listed below. NOTE: UMCOR can accept only new items for distribution. -Box fans (To dry out houses following flooding.) -25’ heavy duty 14 gauge extension cords (To move the fans around inside a home) -2 gallon garden sprayers (To fight mildew and mold) -Flat billed shovels (Remove mud, wet carpet, pads, sheet rock insulation, etc.) -Rakes with 3 tines (Remove tree limbs, leaves and muck from inside homes and yards) -Wheel barrows (2 wheels, so they will not turn over going to the street)

ZOE KENYA TEAM UPDATE Brooke Barksdale and Julie Daniell leave for Kenya this afternoon and will meet the Working Group that our church is sponsoring. Please pray for these orphans and for the entire team who will be building relationships with the ZOE children and staff. Our Working Group has named themselves the Peace Preachers and they are located in the Anjalu region. During the first six months of meetings, the children begin training on the topics of food security, health and disease prevention, business management, and child rights. If they have access to land they will be provided seeds to start gardens and plant crops. If they have not been attending school, ZOE will provide uniforms and other resources to get them back into classes. The youth will present business plans and receive grants so that they can start generating their own income. Most importantly, they will begin to experience that they are not beyond God’s love. Though many are orphans they have a Father in heaven who loves them. ZOE staff members are currently making home visits to record information about dependents and caregivers. This is also a time to assess if any emergency interventions are required to alleviate health issues, abusive conditions, or inadequate shelter. During these first months there will be children who decide they are not ready for the empowerment program and others who will be invited to join the group by those first identified. In about four months, we will receive the names of the children who choose to remain in this empowerment program.

Our 2018 team is almost full!!! If you're planning to go, please let JoAn know this week: jkinrade@newnanfumc.org
