THE SHEPHERD THE NEWSLETTER OF NEWNAN FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

INVITE. INCLUDE. INVOLVE. Newnan First United Methodist Church exists to invite, include, and involve all people in knowing Christ and making Christ known. Do you know why Newnan FUMC is a great church? It’s not because we have a beautiful Sanctuary and spacious Parish Hall. It’s not because we have a great staff (even though we do!). It’s not even because we have a great group of laity who make up the membership of the church. The reason we are a great church is that many of those laity are actively CARING, SERVING, TELLING, GIVING, and STANDING toward the ministry and mission of Christ! Anything positive we can point to is the result of our people going BEYOND BELIEF and choosing to live out their faith in practical ways in the real world! This coming Sunday we will be focusing on the fourth aspect of faithful Christian living: GIVING. I want to thank every one of you who are currently supporting the work of the church through your faithful and generous giving! You understand what it means to be a devoted follower of Christ. You have decided to express your love for God and your trust in Christ by taking a portion of your resources and offering them back to the Lord. As we make our ministry plans for the coming year, we need your continued support! If you have not made regular giving a part of your life to this point, let me encourage you to do so. There is great blessing and joy that comes to us when we know we are doing what God wants us to do. Will you make a decision this year to make GIVING a part of your relationship with God?

I hope you will plan to join us! -Stuart

CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS AND YEAR END: WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU, THE CHURCH, AND THE IRS Contributors must deliver checks on or by December 31st, 2015 in order to claim a charitable contribution deduction for 2015. Checks that are placed in the church offering during the first worship service in 2016 will not qualify for a charitable contribution deduction in 2015, even if the check is predated to 2015 or was actually written in 2015. However, checks that are written, mailed, and postmarked in 2015 will be deductible in 2015 though they are not received by the church until 2016. The deadline for contributions received in the mail postmarked December 31, 2015 is January 5, 2016. Any contributions received after this date will be applied to 2016. To ensure the deductibility of your church contributions, please do not file your 2015 income tax return until you have received your year-end contribution statement from the church. Under IRS rules, you may lose your deduction for some or all of your contributions if you file your tax return before receiving a written acknowledgement of your 2015 contributions from the church. Yearend contribution statements will be mailed and postmarked no later than January 31, 2016. If you are donating stock, please allow at least four weeks for the funds to be transferred to the church by December 31st or you may miss all of the above deadlines! If the deadlines are missed, your stock contribution will be applied to 2016. -Thank you, The Finance Office
