T

he last few months of my life have been, to borrow a new/old expression, “like drinking from a fire hydrant!” There have been days when I have thought that this whole process of moving might be considered as an appropriate punishment for those who have committed the most heinous of crimes. Sorting and packing and giving away and throwing away and cleaning…was there a light at the end of this tunnel, or had that bulb burned out a long time ago? But gradually I was reminded of something that John’s Gospel has been trying to teach us for centuries…that "The LIGHT shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it!” At last the process had come to an end, and Mickey and I realized that we had landed in a great Church that was doing ministry in a vibrant community, and we were blessed to be here at such an opportune time. And speaking of an opportune time, please allow me to express a portion of the gratitude that fills my heart this day. -I am grateful for my partner in life, my partner in ministry, my wife, Mickey. Honestly, I’m not sure how I would have gotten everything done without her. When I was physically and emotionally exhausted by all the details of moving she would encourage me and keep me pointed in the right direction. -I am grateful for all of the ways that you have made Mickey and me welcome at Newnan First UMC. You have fed us, hauled our boxes away, and been very patient as we find our way around the Church and the community. Every day we are feeling more and more at home! -I am grateful for an awesome Staff, made up of such gifted and committed folks who are so dedicated to Christ and His Church. They have been quick to catch me up and very open to where the Holy Spirit is leading us. -I am grateful for the enthusiastic Lay-Leadership at Newnan First. It is exciting to serve alongside folks of all ages as we seek to make Disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world! These women and men desire what’s best for the Church and I count it a great privilege to share the journey with each of them. -I am grateful to all of the members and friends of NFUMC, all of you who have gone out of your way to make me feel welcomed and accepted here. Your smiles and handshakes and hugs and encouraging words have blessed me in more ways that I can count. -I am grateful to our Bishop, Sue Haupert-Johnson, and her Cabinet for entrusting me with this joyful responsibility. Their confidence in me is not something I take lightly.

-Above all, I am grateful to a Gracious and Loving God who has brought me here for such a time as this; a God who will always be “my refuge and my strength!” In Scripture, Living Water – flowing water – is always a symbol for the Grace of God. And I know that, unlike water from a fire hydrant, the Living water will refresh and renew me for the days yet to come. I hope to see you Sunday as we “gather by the river that flows by the throne of God!” Grace and Peace,

Charles

DUC IN ALTUM: Confirmation 2017-18 Duc In Altum, a Latin phrase meaning “head into the deep”, describes the journey of Confirmation. This fall, NFUMC’s 6th graders will discover a deeper understanding of the Christian faith and journey! Over the next few months, we’ll talk about what it means to be a Christian and a member of the United Methodist Church. Our first class is this Sunday, August 13, 2017, at 6pm in Annex Room 212! Remember to wear your favorite team jersey and arrive on time!

KMC RECAP:

The second annual Kids Mission Camp was an awesome week of ministry and mission! We had over 41 participants (photos p.5)! We sorted clothes, shoes, and food at BTG, packed over 100 First Night Survival bags for the United Methodist Children’s Home to distribute to children entering foster care, and spent a morning visiting the residents at Avalon Health and Rehabilitation. While there, the kids planted flowers, made crafts, and sang songs with the residents. Overall, the week was a beautiful reminder that no matter your age, we all have something to give and sometimes just giving your time and presence are the most valuable and meaningful of all!

Adult Volunteers: Please plan to attend a leadership team meeting on Wednesday, August 9, from 6:30 7:30pm in Annex Room 212. Also, please plan to arrive on Sunday evening, August 6, at 5:30 p.m. for prayer and instructions! Parents, if you haven’t registered your confirmand, please contact Rev. Maria Bowers so that you can sign up and receive the orientation materials! Questions? Please contact Rev. Maria Bowers: 770.253.7400 (x208) or mbowers@newnanfumc.org! Let’s grow deeper in our faith together!

CDL DRIVERS NEEDED The church is in need of CDL drivers to help with the variety of trips and activites that require a bus. We are limited in what we can offer without a healthy list of available drivers. All groups need drivers. Some activities are during the week . Others are on the weekends. It may be just driving across town. We need drivers for both the middle and big buses. You may want to limit yourself to just driving the middle bus. That’s OK. The church will pay for your training and volunteering to do this does not commit you to everytime we need a bus driver. Your name would be added to a list of people we could call on and ask. Think about it, pray about it, and let someone on the staff know if you think this is a ministry you could help with. Thanks!!

Safe Place is a Christian support group for female survivors of sexual abuse...a sanctuary where survivors can be heard and experience hope, healing, and restoration. 12-week sessions starting September 5, 2017 & January 9, 2018. FLU SHOTS: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 Joey & Emily Burg will be providing flu shots on Sunday, September 17 in the Gathering Room. They will take most forms of insurance, so if you need a shot, stop by!

The rain arrived just as we were cleaning up, so Thank you, Lord, for providing a beautiful day for a picnic. Special thanks to the men who cooked – Will Conoly, Stephen Leebern, Brad Campbell and Chuck Huey. That was an especially hot and smokey job! And to all the people who provided desserts – YUM!
