One of the joys of serving as Chairman of the Board is experiencing the year-around impact of all who are dedicated to the museum’s mission, programs and financial sustainability. It’s hard to imagine a more enthusiastic group of supporters who give of their time, talent and treasure (sometimes all three) to ensure that this museum thrives as a unique and accessible cultural venue in our community. April is National Volunteer Month, and on April 4th LRMA will host an Appreciation Luncheon for the many volunteers who lend their time as board and committee members, docents and gallery guides, front desk and store associates, curatorial and resource center assistants, and of course, those who help plan and present special events. See the happenings calendar on pages 6–7 for details. For those of you who have recently made a gift to our Annual Fund campaign, my sincere thanks. Your support validates the role this museum plays within our local community, and ensures a continuum of quality educational programming. The current campaign ends March 31, and contributions can be made online at: www.leeparattner.com/donate. My wife, Jane, and I have been involved at LRMA for many years and are proud to be champions for this outstanding museum. I hope you share our joy in actively participating, as well as reaching out to others to become involved as members, volunteers and donors at any and all levels. We can all be champions for the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, each in our own way. With best regards, William “Bill” Schumacher

New at Isabelle’s! Isabelle’s Museum Store is proud to highlight local artist, Joyce Curvin, during the current exhibition, Vernacular Art from the Gadsden Arts Center. Curvin uses new and recycled materials to create zany creatures that have attitude and spunk. These colorful characters—infused with large doses of humor—are inspired by the wildlife of Florida, from funky sandhill cranes, lazy alligators, to her very own dog and cat.

exhibitions Special Exhibitions Vernacular Art from the Gadsden Arts Center Changing Exhibition Galleries THROUGH MAY 15, 2016 Presenting Sponsor: Dr. Tony & Patti Leisner Vernacular Art represents the culture, lifestyle, symbolism, experiences, and beliefs of a place and time period, most specifically the rural Deep South. Most of the artists represented in this exhibition are of African-American descent and have lived in rural parts of the Deep South for a significant period in their lives. They share many characteristics including growing up in poverty, dropping out of school, living in rural environments with little culture or exposure to the outside world, and a significant religious upbringing. Most were influenced by their African-American ancestry, a culture carried down for generations by members of their family. This exhibition demonstrates the communal and therapeutic function that art can play in the lives of artists. In this type of work art is a catalyst for change and emotional healing, emotions, thoughts, and even infused with the artists’ advice or a moral lesson. Vernacular Art from the Gadsden Arts Center is organized by the Gadsden Arts Center, Quincy, Florida. This exhibition was made possible in part by Dr. Lou and Mrs. Calynne Hill, Dr. Jim and Mrs. Betty Ann Rodgers, and the Gadsden Arts Endowment Trust, Inc.

education

LRMA Tours Each year, the Education Department hosts and provides guided tours for a variety of groups. In 2015, there were 29 K-12 tours, 21 SPC student tours and 16 adult tours. Tampa’s Crestwood Elementary, which visits annually, brought 180 third graders over two days to tour the Florida Watercolor Society show, make art in a college art studio and have a picnic lunch on the campus grounds. The students also created hanging artwork for the Challenge of Modern Art Gallery.

If you would like to arrange a guided tour for your group, please contact Patti Buster, LRMA Education Coordinator, at (727) 712-5226. And remember, the museum offers a guided tour every Sunday at 2 p.m.

LRMA’s Youngest Visitors Dunedin residents Coco Shallenberger, three years old, and her grandmother, Frances Shallenberger, visit the museum regularly. On one of their visits, Frances gave Coco a pair of binoculars and captured this photo of her examining Abraham Rattner’s Clowns and Kings. Maybe Coco will become a LRMA docent when she grows up! Patti Buster, LRMA Education Coordinator, greets Leon Tarapani of Tarpon Springs on a visit to the museum with his grandmother, artist, playwright and SPC-TS Fine Arts Instructor, Elizabeth Indianos. Leon’s father, Townsend Tarapani, is a LRMA Board of Directors member.

Partnership with SPC College of Education The Education Department is partnering with SPC’s College of Education and Anne Ryan, Assistant Professor for Early Childhood Education, to present, Do You See What I See? Funded by a grant from SPC’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, this project documents childhood experiences in care centers using photographs taken by children– each four-year-old participant received a digital camera! Approximately 100 black and white images with narratives will be on view in the Challenge of Modern Art Gallery during the last two weeks of April. The museum partnered with Ryan in 2014 on the childhood project, Full STEAM Ahead.

giving

The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art wishes to thank all donors for their generous contributions to the following funds:

FUNDING FOR EDUCATION AT LRMA The museum gratefully acknowledges that a Trust established by the Rev. William Lamb of the Lighthouse of Truth Church, Tampa, continues to help fund museum outreach. The Reverend Lamb, who passed away in 2003, was an alumni of St. Petersburg College and had a great love and appreciation for art and art education. He was particularly pleased with the 2002 opening of the Leepa-Rattner Museum and its association with St. Petersburg College. One of his wishes was to encourage the creative talents of those less fortunate, and in recent years, his gift has helped provide 1378 museum visits with hands-on art activities for students from Title I schools. We are honored to continue his legacy through these and other projects at LRMA.

SPECIAL FUNDING FROM WALMART FOUNDATION Funding in support of K-12 Arts Access at LRMA has been received on behalf of local WalMart Stores #994 (New Port Richey), #1513 (Palm Harbor) and #3414 (Palm Harbor). We are grateful for this local support!

2015 ART IN ACTION ANNUAL FUND Annual Fund Donors will be acknowledged in our next issue (contributions received prior to March 31, 2016).

To learn more about leaving a legacy at LRMA through a bequest or charitable trust, contact Connor Davis at 727-302-6758.
